• Problems running XNA game on 64-bit Windows 7

  I'm having problems getting my game engine to run on my brother's machine, which is running 64-bit Windows 7. I'm developing on 32-bit XP SP2. My app uses XNA, FMOD.NET, and another dll I wrote entirely in C#. Everything is targeted to x86, not AnyCPU. I've read that this is required for XNA to work because there is no 64-bit xna framework. I recompiled FMOD.NET as x86 as well and made sure to be using the 32-bit version of the native dll. So I don't see any problems there. However when he tries to run my app, it gives an error which is mysterious, but not unheard of. A FileNotFoundException with an empty file name, and the top of the stack trace is in my main form constructor. The message is The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E) I found some threads online about this error, all with very vague, mixed, and fuzzy responses that don't really help me. Most remind people to target x86. Some say check that they have all the dlls necessary. I gave my brother Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll, but does he need to install the entire XNA redistributable package? When I take everything I sent him and stick it in a random directory, it still runs fine for me. I developed the game in VS2008, not in game studio, using XNA 3.0 and a Windows Forms control that uses XNA drawing which I found in an msdn tutorial. I would also like to avoid requiring a full installer if possible. Any insight? Please?

• The move from IE6/XP to IE8/Win7 and its effect on ASP.NET applications

  Hello, The company I work for is preparing for application testing in IE8. Previously we have been using IE6. Many of our web applications are written in .NET 1.0 and 1.1 with more recent apps written in 2.x and 3.x. I know IE8 has an IE7 compatibility mode and it says it has a quirks mode, but most of our apps were written for 6, which is not specifically mentioned. Compatibility is for 7, which had a compatibility for 6. I do not know if that is necessarily carried over to 8. In 6 quirks mode was to run 5.5 sites without a problem. With no deeper explanation on any of Microsoft's release notes does it mention quirks mode as 6 compliant or even 5.5, just a basis of what it is (specific DOCTYPEs or no DOCTYPEs). If anyone could shed some light on how sites and apps designed for IE6 should run in IE8 would be greatly appreciated. If anyone else has made a similar move how smooth was the transition? Thanks.

• Requested operation requires an OLE DB Session object... - Connecting Excel to SQL server via ADO

  I'm attempting to take Excel 2003 and connect it to SQL Server 2000 to run a few dynamicly generated SQL Queries which ultimately filling certain cells. I'm attempting to do this via VBA via ADO (I've tried 2.8 to 2.0) but I'm getting an error while setting the ActiveConnection variable which is inside the ADODB.Connection object. I need to resolve this pretty quick... Requested operation requires an OLE DB Session object, which is not supported by the current provider. I'm honestly not sure what this error means and right now I don't care. How can get this connection to succeed so that I can run my queries?   Hi, I am building an application and I am using web services for getting data from a server. It was working fine when I was developing on my XP machine but had to switch to Windows 7. On the new machine I grabbed the latest version of the code using sourcesafe. However, when I try to add a service reference in the solution or update an existing one I get the following error: There was an error downloading 'http://localhost:52490/Service/CustomerService.asmx'. • CoInitialize fails in dll

  Question: I have the following program, which uses COM to use the Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) to take a text and output it as sound. Now it works fine as long as I have it in a .exe. When I load it as .dll, it fails. Why?   How do I get started designing and implementing a script interface for my .NET application? There is VSTA (the .NET equivalent of VBA for COM), but as far as I understand I would have to pay a license fee for every installation of my application. It is an open source application so this will not work. There is also e.g. the embedding of interpreters (IronPython?), but I don't understand how this would allow exposing an "object model" (see below) to external (or internal) scripts. What is the scripting interface story in .NET? Is it somehow trivial in .NET to do this? Background: I have once designed and implemented a fairly involved script interface for a Macintosh application for acquisition and analysis of data from a mass spectrometer (Mac OS, System 7) and later a COM interface for a Windows application. Both were designed with an "object model" and classes (that can have properties). These are overloaded words, but in a scripting interface context object model is essentially a containment hiarchy of objects of specific classes. Classes have properties and lists of contained objects. E.g. like in the COM interfaces exposed in Microsoft Office applications, where the application object can be used to add to its list of documents (with the side effect of creating the GUI representation of a document). External scripts can create new objects in a container and navigate through the content of the hiarchy at any given time. In the Macintosh case scripts could be written in e.g. AppleScript or Frontier. On the Macintosh the implementation of a scripting interface was very complicated. Support for it in Metroworks' C++ class library (the name escapes me right now) made it much simpler.

• Posting forms to a 404 + HttpHandler in IIS7: why has all POST data gone missing?

  OK, this might sound a bit confusing and complicated, so bear with me. We've written a framework that allows us to define friendly URLs. If you surf to any arbitrary URL, IIS tries to display a 404 error (or, in some cases, 403;14 or 405). However, IIS is set up so that anything directed to those specific errors is sent to an .aspx file. This allows us to implement an HttpHandler to handle the request and do stuff, which involves finding the an associated template and then executing whatever's associated with it. Now, this all works in IIS 5 and 6 and, to an extent, on IIS7 - but for one catch, which happens when you post a form. See, when you post a form to a non-existent URL, IIS says "ah, but that url doesn't exist" and throws a 405 "method not allowed" error. Since we're telling IIS to redirect those errors to our .aspx page and therefore handling it with our HttpHandler, this normally isn't a problem. But as of IIS7, all POST information has gone missing after being redirected to the 405. And so you can no longer do the most trivial of things involving forms. To solve this we've tried using a HttpModule, which preserves POST data but appears to not have an initialized Session at the right time (when it's needed). We also tried using a HttpModule for all requests, not just the missing requests that hit 404/403;14/405, but that means stuff like images, css, js etc are being handled by .NET code, which is terribly inefficient. Which brings me to the actual question: has anyone ever encountered this, and does anyone have any advice or know what to do to get things working again? So far someone has suggested using Microsoft's own URL Rewriting module. Would this help solve our problem? Thanks.

DB_Status = "Open" End If End SubI added the same reference (ADO 2.8) The first spreadsheet still works; the seccond at DB_Conn.Open pops up "Run-time error '-214767259 (80004005)': [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified" Removing the references on both, saving files, re-opening, re-adding the references doesn't help. The one still works and the other gets the error. ?!?

• First test of a Windows Phone application

  I downloaded the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone and I wrote a simple application to make a first test of the emulator. In this application I have only a button with the property Content binded to a string called ButtonText and with the property Background binded to a SolidColorBrush named FillColor. • Flash: Using mouse wheel events in full screen mode (Windows and Mac)

  Although Flash has a mouse wheel event (MouseEvent.MOUSE_WHEEL), it comes with quite a few problems. The first is that the event is not yet supported on the Mac. So there are a bunch of solutions, all of which (basically) capture the mousewheel (or DOMMouseScroll) event in javascript and pass it into the flash app. Luckily, under all the Mac browsers I tested, this also works when flash is in fullscreen mode. Problem 2 is that flash ignores mouse wheel events with small "deltas". For example, Microsoft's IntelliPoint Mice with "Smooth Scroll" causes this problem. A solution to this is the same as the solution for the mac... i.e. capture the javascript mouse wheel event in the browser and pass it to the app. The issue is that of the browsers in windows that I tested (firefox, ie, safari, and chrome), they don't seem to capture this event when flash is in full screen mode. Does anyone know why or how to fix that? I currently have a hybrid solution that always takes events from javascript (in non-fullscreen or fullscreen mode) except when it's in fullscreen mode on Windows (at which point it takes them from the flash mousewheel event). So the only times it fails is in full screen mode on Windows with a mouse that has small deltas. Anyone have a full solution? Or just a better one?

• How to tell what account my webservice is running under in Visual Studio 2005

  I'm going a little nuts trying to understand the doc on impersonation and delegation and the question has come up what account my webservice is running under. I am logged as myDomainName\johna on my development workstation called JOHNXP. From Vstudio2005 I start my webservice via Debug and the wsdl page comes up in my browser. From Task Manager, I see the following while sitting at a breakpoint in my .asmx code: aspnet_wp.exe pid=1316 UserName=ASPNET devenv.exe pid=3304 UserName=johna The IIS Directory Security tab for the Virtual Directory that hosts my ws.asmx code has "Enable Anonymous access" UNCHECKED and has "Integrated Windows Authentication" CHECKED. So when the MSDN people state "you must configure the user account under which the server process runs", what would they be refering to in the case of my little webservice described above? I am quoting from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa302400.aspx Ultimately, I want this webservice of mine to impersonate whatever authenticated domain user browses through to an invoke of my webservice. My webservice in turn consumes another ASMX webservice on a different server (but same domain). I need this remote webservice to use the impersonated domain user credentials (not those of my webservice on JOHNXP). So its getting a little snarly for me to understand this and I see I am unclear about the account my web service uses. I think it is ASPNET in IIS 5.1 on WinXP but not sure.

• Best XML format for log events in terms of tool support for data mining and visualization?

  We want to be able to create log files from our Java application which is suited for later processing by tools to help investigate bugs and gather performance statistics. Currently we use the traditional "log stuff which may or may not be flattened into text form and appended to a log file", but this works the best for small amounts of information read by a human. After careful consideration the best bet has been to store the log events as XML snippets in text files (which is then treated like any other log file), and then download them to the machine with the appropriate tool for post processing. I'd like to use as widely supported an XML format as possible, and right now I am in the "research-then-make-decision" phase. I'd appreciate any help both in terms of XML format and tools and I'd be happy to write glue code to get what I need. What I've found so far: log4j XML format: Supported by chainsaw and Vigilog. Lilith XML format: Supported by Lilith Uninvestigated tools: Microsoft Log Parser: Apparently supports XML. OS X log viewer: plus there is a lot of tools on http://www.loganalysis.org/sections/parsing/generic-log-parsers/ Any suggestions?

• Old dll.config problem !

  Since 2005 as I googled it's a problem for who needs to read the configuration of an assembly from it's config file "*.dll.config" and Microsoft didn't do anything yet. Story: If you try to read a setting from a class library (plug-in) you fail. Instead the main application domain (EXE which is using the plug-in) config is read and because probably there's not such a config your plug-in will use default setting which is hard-coded when you create it's settings for first time. Any change to .dll.config wouldn't see by your plug-in and you wonder why it's there! If you want to replace it and start searching you may find something like this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/594298/c-dll-config-file But just some ideas and one line code. A good replacement for built-in config shouldn't read from file system each time we need a config value, so we can store them in memory; Then what if user changes config file ? we need a FileSystemWatcher and we need some design like singleton ... and finally we are at the same point configuration of .NET is except our one's working. It seems MS did everything but forgot why they built the ".dll.config". Since no DLL is gonna execute by itself, they are referenced from other apps (even if used in web) and so why there's such a "*.dll.config" file ? I'm not gonna argue if it's good to have multiple config files or not. It's my design (plug-able components). Finally { After these years, is there any good practice such as a custom setting class to add in each assemly and read from it's own config file ? }

• Why is a NullReferenceException thrown when a ToolStrip button is clicked twice with code in the `Click` event handler?

  I created a clean WindowsFormsApplication solution, added a ToolStrip to the main form, and placed one button on it. I've added also an OpenFileDialog, so that the Click event of the ToolStripButton looks like the following: private void toolStripButton1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { openFileDialog1.ShowDialog(); } I didn't change any other properties or events. The funny thing is that when I double-click the ToolStripButton (the second click must be quite fast, before the dialog opens), then cancel both dialogs (or choose a file, it doesn't really matter) and then click in the client area of main form, a NullReferenceException crashes the application (error details attached at the end of the post). Please note that the Click event is implemented while DoubleClick is not. What's even more strange that when the OpenFileDialog is replaced by any user-implemented form, the ToolStripButton blocks from being clicked twice. I'm using VS2008 with .NET3.5. I didn't change many options in VS (only fontsize, workspace folder and line numbering). Does anyone know how to solve this? It is 100% replicable on my machine, is it on others too? One solution that I can think of is disabling the button before calling OpenFileDialog.ShowDialog() and then enabling the button back (but it's not nice). Any other ideas? Don't get me wrong grammars are great for telling the speech recognition exactly what words / phrases to look out for, however what if I want it to recognise something i've not given it a heads up about? Or I want to parse a phrase which is half pre-determined command name and half random words? For example.. Scenario A - I say "Google [Oil Spill]" and I want it to open Google with search results for the term in brackets which could be anything. Scenario B - I say "Locate [Manchester]" and I want it to search for Manchester in Google Maps or anything else non pre-determined I want it to know that 'Google' and 'Locate' are commands and what comes after it are parameters (and could be anything). Question : Does anyone know how to mix the use of pre-determined grammars (words the speech recognition should recognise) and words not in its pre-determined grammar? • Customizing the TFS 2008 build sequence to avoid compilation and deploy SSRS

  I'm trying to create a CI process for SQL Server Reporting Services. I am fairly new to TFS but quite experienced with MSBuild. In the past I've used a combination of MSBuild with Team City so the whole build process is more or less custom. Here lies the start of my problems, as the solution I am deploying only contains Report Server projects (rds), no compilation is required. I thought that I would override the the first default task that TFS runs (EndToEndIteration) to override the default TFS build sequence and inject my own. The first snag that I have come across is that the build always fails, how can I set the status of the build to success? Currently the EndToEndIteration task is very light and only has a message. Is this the best method to create a custom build process in TFS where compilation is not required? Or should I use the default sequence and override one of the hook tasks mentioned in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337604%28VS.80%29.aspx (ie: AfterCompile) The core steps that I'd like to achieve are: Bundle the RDL and datasource files Connect to the host server to register/deploy the reports Re-apply any subscriptions that previously existed Run tests to verify the deployment succeeded and is returning results as expected I have found another article on Report services deployment: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/88710/reporting-services-deployment But it doesn't mention the best practice for customizing the standard build process.   I have a NUnit test class that starts an ASP.NET web service (using Microsoft.VisualStudio.WebHost.Server) which runs on http://localhost:1070 The problem I am having is that I want to create a session state within the NUnit test that is accessible by the ASP.NET web service on localhost:1070. • A question about writing a background/automatic/silent downloader/installer for an app in C#.

  Background: I have a main application that needs to be able to go to the web and download DLL files associated with it (ones that we write, located on our server). It really needs to be able to download these DLL files to the application folder in "C:\Program Files\". In the past I have used System.Net.WebClient to download whatever files I wanted from the web. The Issue I have had a lot of trouble downloading data in the past and saving to files on a user's hard drive. I get many reports of users saying that this does not work and it is generally because of user rights issues in the program. In the cases where it was an issue with program user rights every user could go to the exact file location on the web, download it, and then save it to the right place manually. I want this to work like all the other programs I have seen download/install in this fassion (i.e. Firefox Pluign Updates, Flash Player, JAVA, Adobe Reader, etc). All of these work without a hitch. The Question Is there some code I need to use to give my downloader program special rights to the Program Files folder? Can I even do this? Is there a better class or library that I should use? Is there a different approach to downloading files I should take, such as using threads or something else to download data? Any help here is appreciated. I want to try to stay away from third-party apps/libraries if at all possible, other than Microsoft of course, due to licensing issues, but still send any suggestions my way. Again, other programs seem to have the rights issues and download capability figured out. I want this same capability.

• An Ideal Keyboard Layout for Programming

  I often hear complaints that programming languages that make heavy use of symbols for brevity, most notably C and C++ (I'm not going to touch APL), are difficult to type because they require frequent use of the shift key. A year or two ago, I got tired of it myself, downloaded Microsoft's Keyboard Layout Creator, made a few changes to my layout, and have not once looked back. The speed difference is astounding; with these few simple changes I am able to type C++ code around 30% faster, depending of course on how hairy it is; best of all, my typing speed in ordinary running text is not compromised. My questions are these: what alternate keyboard layouts have existed for programming, which have gained popularity, are any of them still in modern use, do you personally use any altered layout, and how can my layout be further optimised? I made the following changes to a standard QWERTY layout. (I don't use Dvorak, but there is a programmer Dvorak layout worth mentioning.) Swap numbers with symbols in the top row, because long or repeated literal numbers are typically replaced with named constants; Swap backquote with tilde, because backquotes are rare in many languages but destructors are common in C++; Swap minus with underscore, because underscores are common in identifiers; Swap curly braces with square brackets, because blocks are more common than subscripts; and Swap double quote with single quote, because strings are more common than character literals. I suspect this last is probably going to be the most controversial, as it interferes the most with running text by requiring use of shift to type common contractions. This layout has significantly increased my typing speed in C++, C, Java, and Perl, and somewhat increased it in LISP and Python.

• Some web pages (especially Apple documentation) cause heavy CPU usage in Windows IE8

  Maybe this belongs in Server Fault instead, but some of you may have noticed this issue (particularly those developing on Mac, using a Windows machine to read the reference material). I posted the same question on a Microsoft forum and got one answer from someone who reproduced the problem, so it's not just my machine. No solution yet. Ever since this month's security updates, I find that many web pages cause the CPU to run at maximum for as long as the web page is visible. This happens in both IE7 and IE8 on at least three different computers (two with Windows XP, one with Vista). Here is one of the pages, running on XP with IE 8: http://learning2code.blogspot.com/2007/11/update-using-subversion-with-xcode-3.html Here is one that does it in Vista with IE8: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSString_Class/Reference/NSString.html You can leave the page open for hours and the CPU is still at high usage. This doesn't happen every time. It is not always reproduceable. Sometimes it is OK the second or third time it loads. In IE7 the high usage is in ieframe.dll, version 7.0.6000.16890. In IE8 the high usage is in iertutil.dll, version 8.0.6001.18806.

• Join two tables with same # of row but sorted for NULL

  I need to join two tables with the same number of rows. Each table has 1 column. There is NO CONNECTING COLUMN to reference for a join. I need to join them side by side because each table was sorted separately so that numeric values are at the top in descinding order. The Table Earners has income values from say 200K down to 0. I cannot just select using 2 cases, because then I will have my first row with Incomes above 100K, but the first 20 or so entries in the second row are NULL. I want the second row to also be sorted descending. I looked up using ORDER BY within CASE but there is no such thing. I have tried to read about row_number() but none of the examples seem to match or make sense. drop table #20plus select case when Income >= 20000 AND Income < 100000 then Income end as 'mula' into #20plus from Earners order by mula desc drop table #100plus select case when Income >= 100000 then Income end as 'dinero' into #100plus from Earners order by dinero desc Select A.dinero, B.mula FROM #100plus as A JOIN #20plus as B ON A.????? = B.????? • How would you mask data returned in a Dynamic Data for Entities website?

  I'm doing this in Visual Studio 2008, not 2010, in case there is a relevant difference between the two versions of the Dynamic Data websites. How would I mask data in the automatically generated tables in a Dynamic Data for Entities website? The scenario is we have one table where we want to allow users to ENTER sensitive data, but not VIEW sensitive data, so... (In the list below, I'm using "template" to mean "The web page generated automatically based on the schema and action. I'm sure that's the wrong terminology, but the meaning should be clear.) The "Insert" template should have the field's textbox available for the user to type a value in. The "Edit" template should have the field's textbox blanked out (empty string) regardless of what was in the field in the database in the first place, but the user should be able to type in new data and have it save The "View" template should either have the data for this field masked, or non-visible. The auto-generated table showing the list of records should also have this field masked or non-visible. I can do this easily with standard Web Forms, but I'm having a hard time figuring this out in the Dynamic Data site I'm working on. Masking data is such a common task, I have to believe Microsoft thought of this and provided a way to do it...

Please Wait...;Check:SQLVerifyInstall What I'm trying to accomplish is have the SQL Server package install but only have the instance name itself reference the name of the machine name and nothing more. What I'm receiving instead is a named instance instead of local such as MachineName\SQLEXPRESS which is not what I want to receive. I need a local instance instead of a named instance due to the way my code is written to be able to install and talk with the databases in question. I would change it, trust me, were it not the fact that this install package is a replacement to a previous package that used the MSDE installer. I have to be able to support both through code. Any suggestions are welcome but a clear and concise method to get the installer to quietly install using only the machine name is my main goal. Thanks for the help and support!

• Unable to set up ODBC after installing ODAC (Xcopy)

  We are trying to use ODAC Xcopy to minimize the footprint of installing Oracle 11g Client. Currently, we use the Oracle 11g Admin install (~700mb). I've tried using the ODAC Xcopy, and that works. However, the only issue I now have is that I cannot set up an ODBC on the target system by just installing the ODAC Xcopy. After installing ODAC (Windows XP fyi), I go to Control Panel--Admin Tools--Data Sources (ODBC)--System DSN--Add--Microsoft ODBC for Oracle. I get the following error: "The Oracle(tm) client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3 (or greater) client software installation. You will be unable to use this driver until these components have been installed." I've tried editing the registry and creating the same keys that the Oracle Admin install creates, but still no luck. I'm not sure how to get past this. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
