• VLC 2.0.3 on Lubuntu 12.04: No audio?

  I am on Lubuntu 12.04, and I have installed VLC media player version 2.0.3. When I try and play an audio file, it appears to load fine, and the media position bar displays the progress, and it says it is playing, but I can't here any thing through my speakers. I can hear game audio, web audio, and audio from SMPlayer just fine, but with VLC, I can't here anything. It would eventually start working after I messed around with the audio settings, but it happened every restart. I eventually switched to SMPlayer, but now I need some of the features that VLC offers, but I still can't use VLC. At this point, the audio can not be heard at all, and the method I used before, messing around with the audio settings, isn't getting me anywhere.   I have recent hardware, 64 bit, pae and so on. But I'd like to have my Debian installation on a USB HDD. Installing Debian to USB is solved. I used the i386 architecture image. But a pae kernel has been installed. I want to be able to travel with my USB HDD and therefore I want best possible hardware compatibility. My friends and family have sometimes older hardware, but always i386, just sometimes without 64 bit or pae. Never met someone with sparc or other architectures. What should I do to get non-pae kernel and maximum hardware compatibility?

• Exploring packages in code

  In my previous post Searching for tasks with code you can see how to explore the control flow side of packages, drilling down through containers, task, and event handlers, but it didn’t cover the data flow. I recently saw a post on the MSDN forum asking how to edit an existing package programmatically, and the sticking point was how to find the the data flow and the components inside. This post builds on some of the previous code and shows how you can explore all objects inside a package. I took the sample Task Search application I’d written previously, and came up with a totally pointless little console application that just walks through the package and writes out the basic type and name of every object it finds, starting with the package itself e.g. Package – MyPackage . The sample package we used last time showed nested objects as well an event handler; a OnPreExecute event tucked away on the task SQL In FEL. If you wanted to know more about the component you could look at the ObjectType or ComponentClassID properties. After that it gets a bit harder and you should get a reference to the wrapper object as the comment suggest and start using the properties, just like you would in the create packages samples, see our Code Development category for some for these examples. • Dynamips Virtual Router not pinging external host after bridging

  I have setup a virtual router image with dynamips and setup bridging between tap0 interface of the virtual router and eth0 and br0 with commands [root@cisco_host]# brctl addbr br0 [root@cisco_host]# ifconfig br0 up [root@cisco_host]# ifconfig eth1 0.0.0.0 [root@cisco_host]# brctl addif br0 eth1 [root@cisco_host]# ifconfig br0 192.168.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 up In dynagen configuration I have: f0/0 = NIO_tap:tap0 So, [root@cisco_host]# brctl addif br0 tap0 [root@cisco_host]# ifconfig tap0 up router(config)#int fa0/0 router(config-if)#ip address 192.168.0.101 255.255.255.0 router(config-if)#no shutdown After the configuration above I was expecting that from inside the router I could ping an external machine with IP 192.168.0.1 Actually from the host I can ping the external host 192.168.0.1 as well as 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.101. So what am I missing here? tap0 is bridged with br0 and in turn with eth1. So why the router is not pingable from 192.168.0.1 and vice-versa??

• Unable to login to arch linux

  I am new to archlinux. I am using live usb for archlinux. When I booted it said not a COM32R image. I explored on Google, used Tab and choose have64 and then it booted. Now I am not able to login I used password root but it's not accepting. I also used startx but nothing happened. I am using archlinux-2014.06.01-dual iso downloaded from archlinux website. I see the the following Arch Linux Menu after boot-up Boot Arch Linux (x86_64)(NBD) Boot Arch Linux (x86_64)(NFS) Boot Arch Linux (x86_64)(HTTP) Boot Arch Linux (i686)(NBD) Boot Arch Linux (i686)(NFS) Boot Arch Linux (i686)(HTTP) Boot Existing OS I Choose First one and fourth one (NBD) for live boot and i am having the problem mentioned above.

• Slow performance by PHP directory operations on virtual machine (Ubuntu libvirt)

  Some days ago I installed an Ubuntu server and two running virtual machines with libvirt. Everything works fine except one performance problem. Everytime when I call a PHP script with directory operations the operations are very slow and not performant. Here is an example: http://zother.white-tiger.ch/ And here you see an example without a directory operation and how fast it is: http://michaeltanner.ch/ It's all on the same virtual server. The virtual machine uses 6 cores (8 are available) and 7500 megabytes RAM (8 Gigabyte are available). The disk image format is qcow2. How can I improve the performance?

• SQL SERVER – ASYNC_IO_COMPLETION – Wait Type – Day 11 of 28

  For any good system three things are vital: CPU, Memory and IO (disk). Among these three, IO is the most crucial factor of SQL Server. Looking at real-world cases, I do not see IT people upgrading CPU and Memory frequently. However, the disk is often upgraded for either improving the space, speed or throughput. Today we will look at another IO-related wait type. From Book On-Line: Occurs when a task is waiting for I/Os to finish. ASYNC_IO_COMPLETION Explanation: Any tasks are waiting for I/O to finish. If by any means your application that’s connected to SQL Server is processing the data very slowly, this type of wait can occur. Several long-running database operations like BACKUP, CREATE DATABASE, ALTER DATABASE or other operations can also create this wait type. Reducing ASYNC_IO_COMPLETION wait: When it is an issue related to IO, one should check for the following things associated to IO subsystem: Look at the programming and see if there is any application code which processes the data slowly (like inefficient loop, etc.). Note that it should be re-written to avoid this  wait type. Proper placing of the files is very important. We should check the file system for proper placement of the files – LDF and MDF on separate drive, TempDB on another separate drive, hot spot tables on separate filegroup (and on separate disk), etc. Check the File Statistics and see if there is a higher IO Read and IO Write Stall SQL SERVER – Get File Statistics Using fn_virtualfilestats. Check event log and error log for any errors or warnings related to IO. If you are using SAN (Storage Area Network), check the throughput of the SAN system as well as configuration of the HBA Queue Depth. In one of my recent projects, the SAN was performing really badly and so the SAN administrator did not accept it. After some investigations, he agreed to change the HBA Queue Depth on the development setup (test environment). As soon as we changed the HBA Queue Depth to quite a higher value, there was a sudden big improvement in the performance. It is very likely to happen that there are no proper indexes on the system and yet there are lots of table scans and heap scans. Creating proper index can reduce the IO bandwidth considerably. If SQL Server can use appropriate cover index instead of clustered index, it can effectively reduce lots of CPU, Memory and IO (considering cover index has lesser columns than cluster table and all other; it depends upon the situation). • Linux - Imaging backup solution?

  I want to know is there a way to make a snapshot-like backup of a linux system into a single file and restore it in another system ? You know in windows there are programs which makes a copy of a drive (like C:\ ) into a single image file. So you can restore this file later incase you are infected or something happens. Every time I want to migrate my vps into another host, I have to setup the new server from scratch and move the files manually. Can I just make a snapshot backup of the whole system and restore it somewhere else (or on the same server) ? I am not familiar with linux and I have no idea if this is technically possible or not ? Does the paritions, configs, system files,etc... are individual for each system ? I heard about rsync, but that's not what I am looking for.

• Killer content for my Kindle - The Economist with no need for an iPad - yipeee!

  I admin it, I was jealous of someone's iPad. They were reading The Economist, for free, as they were a print subscriber. I'm a print subscriber too. However, I don't have an iPad or an iPhone, just an Android phone and a Kindle. As soon as I got the Kindle, I looked up how to get The Economist on it. £9.99 per month. Hmmm, twice as much again as a my print subscription and I wanted to maintain the print subscription. No way Amazon. Fortunately some nice person wrote similar comments on The Economist subscription for Kindle, but added a very important additional nugget of information; and there is no need, as a print subscriber you can just use the free Calibre e-book creation tool anyway. So I downloaded it, searched for The Economist online 'recipe', entered my login name and password (part of my print subscription) and off went Calibre to screen scrape every single article from the Christmas 2010 issue into a .mobi file, complete with front cover image and full indexing. It's wonderful. Truely wonderful. Every section individually indexed, with each article separated and all inline images preserved. It even feels wonderfully retro, back to the days when The Economist only used black and white images. So many thanks the guys behind Calibre and The Economist recipe creators. Finally, I have my essential Kindle content that I've been waiting for.

• Microsoft Word RTF formatting breaks after pasting in HTML and saving

  I have developed an HTML e-campaign which uses tables and all the ugly stuff required for HTML emails. I'm pasting this via Open File ( I paste the URL ) and it retrieves the resources ( images ) and pastes the layout in MS Word. When I go and save this as an RTF, close Word and reopen the RTF, the images are broken. Anyone have a clue as to how to work around this issue? I can confirm 100% that the image resource is VALID, it's through http and NOT https. I've tried various advanced options relating to tables/formatting and all to no avail.

• Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P won't boot from USB drive with RAID enabled

  I've got a Windows 7 installation image on my USB hard drive, which is set up to be bootable. I know it works because I've used it on several computers, and it works on the computer I'm trying to install as long as the RAID controller is disabled. However, when I enable the RAID controller and attempt to boot from the USB driver, it hangs for 30-60 seconds and then gives me the "disk boot failure, insert system disk" error like it can't find any OS. Just for laughs, I disabled the RAID controller again and it booted fine. I'm having separate, unrelated issues burning a dvd with the ISO, so I would prefer to get this working.

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/MOSSLover/archive/2014/06/12/what-ive-gained-from-being-a-presenter-at-tech-events.aspxI know I fail at blogging lately.  As I've said before life happens and it gets in the way of best laid out plans.  I thought about creating some type of watch with some app that basically dictates using dragon naturally speaking to Wordpress, but alas no time and the write processing capabilities just don't exist yet.So to get to my point Alison Gianotto created this blog post: http://www.snipe.net/2014/06/why-you-should-stop-stalling-and-start-presenting/.  I like the message she has stated in this post and I want to share something personal.It was around 2007 that I was seriously looking into leaving the technology field altogether and going back to school.  I was calling places like Washington University in Saint Louis and University of Missouri Kansas City asking them how I could go about getting into some type of post graduate medical school program.  My entire high school career was based on Medical Explorers and somehow becoming a doctor.  I did not want to take my hobby and continue using it as a career mechanism.  I was unhappy, but I didn't realize why I was unhappy at the time.  It was really a lot of bad things involving the lack of self confidence and self esteem.  Overall I was not in a good place and it took me until 2011 to realize that I still was not in a good place in life.So in about April 2007 or so I started this blog that you guys have been reading or occasionally read.  I kind of started passively stalking people by reading their blogs in the SharePoint and .Net communities.  I also started listening to .Net Rocks & watching videos on their corresponding training for SharePoint, WCF, WF, and a bunch of other technologies.  I wanted more knowledge, so someone suggested I go to a user group.  I've told this story before about how I met Jeff Julian & John Alexander, so that point I will spare you the details.  You know how I got to my first user group presentation and how I started getting involved with events, so I'll also spare those details.The point I want to touch on is that I went out I started speaking and that path I took helped me gain the self confidence and self respect I needed.  When I first moved to NYC I couldn't even ride a subway by myself or walk alone without getting lost.  Now I feel like I can go out and solve any problem someone throws at me.  So you see what Alison states in her blog post is true and I am a great example to that point.  I stood in front of 800 or so people at SharePoint Conference in 2011 and spoke about a topic.  In 2007 I would have hidden or stuttered the entire time.  I have now spoken at over 70 events and user groups.  I am a top 25 influencer in my technology.  I was a most valued professional for years in a row in Microsoft SharePoint.  People are constantly trying to gain my time, so that they can pick my brain for solutions and other life problems.  I went from maybe five or six friends to over hundreds of friends in various cities across the globe.  I'm not saying it's an instant fame and it doesn't take a ton of work, but I have never looked back once at my life and regretted the choice I made in 2007.  It has lead me to a lot of other things in my life, including more positivity and happiness.  If anyone ever wants to contact me and pick my brain on a presentation go ahead.  If you want me to help you find the best meetup that suits you for that presentation I can try to help too (I might be a little more helpful in the Microsoft or iOS arenas though).  The best thing I can state is don't be scared just do it.  If you need an audience I can try to pencil it in my schedule.  I can't promise anything, but if you are in NYC I can at least try.

• The visual effects in Windows 7 turns off after reboot.

  I have Windows 7 64-bit Professional on my PC. When using English language, the visual effects are turned on. When I use Telugu LIP (India), the visual effects are turned off every time I reboot my PC. When I say visual effects, I don't mean the aero effects. The maximize and minimize effects are not felt. The effects don't show up though the check boxes are checked. Find the image showing the check boxes are checked but the effects not being showed up p. UPDATE: I recreated the account and now the effects are restored properly. UPDATE: Yes it is. This is a standard account. The surprising thing is,the check boxes are checked but still no animations. Once I make the apply button enable, the animations show up again.

• Website Content via remote mysql or API for clients

  I would like to know whether there will be problem for shared hosting/vps/dedicated users if they request content via remote mysql or via http API. ? What will be issues if they make every request to production server for delivery of the website articles along with image urls etc. Will it cause disk wait on shared/vps/dedicated hosting users ? Will both remotemysql or http api or curl cause high CPU usage, I/O wait or Memory usage ? What should be best for speed remote mysql or http web api ? or any alternatives ? Thanku Kannan

• Safely Remove Hardware (USB drive) needs End Process for rundll32.exe - Windows XP SP3

Given the modules rundll32.exe is running, do you know which running module(s) would prevent the USB drive from being safely removed, and if so is there a more permanent straightforward solution such as changing an automatic service (the list from services.msc) into a disabled/manual service or maybe something else you can think of?
