How to break up a table holding 100mil+ number of records?

We're currently storing answers for 52 predefined questions for our clients in our matchmaking site. we have over 30million unique users summing up for worst case of a 52x30million rows. Of these 52 questions, 11 are required and always answered. Our previous solution was to open an answer table for each question. This solution distributed our answer rows for faster insert/delete/update. But it also caused us an unconventional programming such as dynamically opening a table each time a question is added/updated, or removing an answer table if it was to be destroyed permanently. We want to come up with a better solution for our third version but could't get very far yet. Any ideas to accomplish this in any other, perhaps a more conventional, way?

SQLite - executeUpdate exception not caught when database does not exist? (Java)

So I was purposely trying to break my program, and I've succeeded. I deleted the sqlite database the program uses, while the program was running, after I already created the connection. Then I attempted to update the database as seen below. Statement stmt; try { stmt = Foo.con.createStatement(); stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT INTO "+table+" VALUES (\'" + itemToAdd + "\')"); } catch(SQLException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.toString()); } The problem is, it didn't catch the exception, and continued to run as if the database was updated successfully. Meanwhile the database didn't even exist at that point since this was after I deleted it. Doesn't it check if the database still exists when updating? Do I have to check the database connection manually, every time I update to ensure that the database wasn't corrupted/deleted? Is this the way it is normally done, or is there a simpler/more robust approach? Thank you.

sprintf and % signs in text

A problem I recently ran into was that when trying to update a field in my database using this code would not work. I traced it back to having a % sign in the text being updated ($note, then $note_escaped)... Inserting it with sprintf worked fine though. Should I not be using sprintf for updates, or should it be formed differently? I did some searching but couldn't come up with anything. $id = mysql_real_escape_string($id); $note_escaped = mysql_real_escape_string($note); $editedby = mysql_real_escape_string($author); $editdate = mysql_real_escape_string($date); //insert info from form into database $query= sprintf("UPDATE notes_$suffix SET note='$note_escaped', editedby='$editedby', editdate='$editdate' WHERE id='$id' LIMIT 1"); Thanks much!

In my index.html.erb and in my index.js.erb, if I have: <%= "string with unsafe characters' like <" %> It will automatically be encoded to: string with unsafe characters" like & just the same as if I had used: <%=h "string with unsafe characters' like <" %> How do I get it to stop? I have stored some short bits of JavaScript that I need to insert into the template without it automatically encoding the string?

I'm unable to determine why I don't get my expected output, given this code: int periods = (location.Length / 2) - 1; for (int index = 2, i = 0; i < periods; index += 3, ++i ) { location = location.Insert(index, "."); } And a location of "C5032AC", I expect that location will equal "C.50.32.A.C" after my loop terminates; it is instead "C5.03.2AC". Can anyone explain what I'm missing here?

Entity Framework Code-First to Provide Replacement for ASP.NET Profile Provider

A while back, I coordinated a project to add support for the SQL Table Profile Provider in ASP.NET 4 Web Applications. We urged Microsoft to improve ASP.NET’s built-in Profile support so our workaround wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, Microsoft plans to provide a replacement for ASP.NET Profile in a forthcoming release. In response to my feature suggestion on Connect, Microsoft says we should look for something even better using Entity Framework: “When code-first is officially released the final piece of a full replacement of the ASP.NET Profile will have arrived. Once code-first for EF4 is released, developers will have a really easy and very approachable way to create any arbitrary class, and automatically have the .NET Framework create a table to provide storage for that class. Furthermore developer will also have full LINQ-query capabilities against code-first classes. “ The downside is that there won’t be a way to retrofit this Profile replacement to pre- ASP.NET 4 Web applications. At least there’ll still be the MVP workaround code. It looks like it’s time for me to dig into a CTP of EF Code-First to see what’s available. Scott Guthrie has been blogging about Code-First Development with Entity Framework 4. It’s not clear when the EF Code-First is coming, but my guess is that it’ll be part of the VS 2010/.NET 4 service pack.

How to suppress an unwanted external Autodiscover lookup?

In a small network with Exchange 2007, when starting Outlook 2010 (and once in a while afterwards), users get a prompt to confirm that it's safe to get account configuration information from cpanelemaildiscovery.cpanel.net/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (I could read in a couple of forums that there is a bug in cpanel, but that's beside the point.) I'm puzzled because I can't find any autodiscover DNS entries anywhere, neither internally nor externally. The only hint is that we use an external hosting company for our website and for one single email address, which runs on cpanel. So I guess that Outlook makes an external DNS query to test all entries? It reates a lot of confusion for the users and frankly I'm not too happy that the external hosting company gets contacted by all our users. How can I suppress this behavior? Thanks

September 2011 Release of the Ajax Control Toolkit

I’m happy to announce the release of the September 2011 Ajax Control Toolkit. This release has several important new features including: Date ranges – When using the Calendar extender, you can specify a start and end date and a user can pick only those dates which fall within the specified range. This was the fourth top-voted feature request for the Ajax Control Toolkit at CodePlex. Twitter Control – You can use the new Twitter control to display recent tweets associated with a particular Twitter user or tweets which match a search query. Gravatar Control – You can use the new Gravatar control to display a unique image for each user of your website. Users can upload custom images to the Gravatar.com website or the Gravatar control can display a unique, auto-generated, image for a user. You can download this release this very minute by visiting CodePlex: http://AjaxControlToolkit.CodePlex.com Alternatively, you can execute the following command from the Visual Studio NuGet console: Improvements to the Ajax Control Toolkit Calendar Control The Ajax Control Toolkit Calendar extender control is one of the most heavily used controls from the Ajax Control Toolkit. The developers on the Superexpert team spent the last sprint focusing on improving this control. There are three important changes that we made to the Calendar control: we added support for date ranges, we added support for highlighting today’s date, and we made fixes to several bugs related to time zones and daylight savings. Using Calendar Date Ranges One of the top-voted feature requests for the Ajax Control Toolkit was a request to add support for date ranges to the Calendar control (this was the fourth most voted feature request at CodePlex). With the latest release of the Ajax Control Toolkit, the Calendar extender now supports date ranges. Notice that the Calendar control includes StartDate and EndDate properties which restrict the range of valid dates. The Calendar control shows days, months, and years outside of the valid range as struck out. You cannot select days, months, or years which fall outside of the range. Highlighted Today’s Date Another highly requested feature for the Calendar control was support for highlighting today’s date. The Calendar control now highlights the user’s current date regardless of the user’s time zone. Fixes to Time Zone and Daylight Savings Time Bugs We fixed several significant Calendar extender bugs related to time zones and daylight savings time. For example, previously, when you set the Calendar control’s SelectedDate property to the value 1/1/2007 then the selected data would appear as 12/31/2006 or 1/1/2007 or 1/2/2007 depending on the server time zone. For example, if your server time zone was set to Samoa (UTC-11:00), then setting SelectedDate=”1/1/2007” would result in “12/31/2006” being selected in the Calendar. Users of the Calendar extender control found this behavior confusing. After careful consideration, we decided to change the Calendar extender so that it interprets all dates as UTC dates. In other words, if you set StartDate=”1/1/2007” then the Calendar extender parses the date as 1/1/2007 UTC instead of parsing the date according to the server time zone. By interpreting all dates as UTC dates, we avoid all of the reported issues with the SelectedDate property showing the wrong date. Furthermore, when you set the StartDate and EndDate properties, you know that the same StartDate and EndDate will be selected regardless of the time zone associated with the server or associated with the browser. The date 1/1/2007 will always be the date 1/1/2007. The New Twitter Control This release of the Ajax Control Toolkit introduces a new twitter control. You can use the Twitter control to display recent tweets associated with a particular twitter user. You also can use this control to show the results of a twitter search. Twitter recommends that you cache results on the server (https://dev.twitter.com/docs/rate-limiting). By default, the Twitter control caches results on the server for a duration of 5 minutes. You can modify the cache duration by assigning a value (in seconds) to the Twitter control's CacheDuration property. The Twitter control wraps a standard ASP.NET ListView control. You can customize the appearance of the Twitter control by modifying its LayoutTemplate, StatusTemplate, AlternatingStatusTemplate, and EmptyDataTemplate. This control makes it easy to display a unique image for each user of your website. A Gravatar is associated with an email address. That way, every website which uses Gravatars (such as the www.ASP.NET website) will display your image next to your name. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 with Entity Framework v4.0 (12m video)

Today I recorded a video in which I illustrate some of the database-first functionality available in LLBLGen Pro v3.0. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 also supports model-first functionality, which I hope to illustrate in an upcoming video. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 is currently in beta and is scheduled to RTM some time in May 2010. It supports the following frameworks out of the box, with more scheduled to follow in the coming year: LLBLGen Pro RTL (our own o/r mapper framework), Linq to Sql, NHibernate and Entity Framework (v1 and v4). The video I linked to below illustrates the creation of an entity model for Entity Framework v4, by reverse engineering the SQL Server 2008 example database 'AdventureWorks'. The following topics (among others) are included in the video: Abbreviation support (example: convert 'Qty' into 'Quantity' during name construction) Flexible, framework specific settings Attribute definitions for various elements (so no requirement for buddy-classes or messing with generated code or templates) Retrieval of relational model data from a database Reverse engineering of tables into entities, automatically placed in groups Auto-creation of inheritance hierarchies Refactoring of entity fields into Value Type Definitions (DDD) Mapping a Typed view onto a stored procedure resultset Creation of a Typed list (definition of a query with a projection) on a set of related entities Validation and correction of found inconsistencies and errors Generating code using one of the pre-defined presets Illustration of the code in vs.net 2010 It also gives a good overview of what it takes with LLBLGen Pro v3.0 to start from a new project, point it to a database, get an entity model, perform tweaks and validation and generate code which is ready to run. Using PHP OCI8 with 32-bit PHP on Windows 64-bit

The world migration from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems is gaining pace. However I've seen a couple of customers having difficulty with the PHP OCI8 extension and Oracle DB on Windows 64-bit platforms. The errors vary depending how PHP is run. They may appear in the Apache or PHP log: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\php_oci8_11g.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. or Warning oci_connect(): OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that PATH includes the directory with Oracle Instant Client libraries Other than IIS permission issues a common cause seems to be trying to use PHP with libraries from an Oracle 64-bit database on the same machine. There is currently no 64-bit version of PHP on http://php.net/ so there is a library mismatch. A solution is to install Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and make sure that PHP uses these libraries, while not interferring with the 64-bit database on the same machine. Warning: The following hacky steps come untested from a Linux user: Unzip Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and move it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2. You may need to do this in a console with elevated permissions. Edit your PATH environment variable and insert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2 in the directory list before the entry for the Oracle Home library. Windows makes it so all 32-bit applications that reference C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 actually see the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 directory. Your 64-bit database won't find an Instant Client in the real, physical C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and will continue to use the database libraries. Some of our Windows team are concerned about this hack and prefer a more "correct" solution that (i) doesn't require changing the Windows system directory (ii) doesn't add to the "memory" burden about what was configured on the system (iii) works when there are multiple database versions installed. The solution is to write a script which will set the 64-bit (or 32-bit) Oracle libraries in the path as needed before invoking the relevant bit-ness application. This does have a weakness when the application is started as a service. As a footnote: If you don't have a local database and simply need to have 32-bit and 64-bit Instant Client accessible at the same time, try the "symbolic" link approach covered in the hack in this OTN forum thread. Reminder warning: This blog post came untested from a Linux user.

Hi all, Greeetings !!! I need a suggestion about having AD DS or AD LDS for my infrastructure. So lets begin, Ex. I am having a website which as of now do not have any log in facility for the visitors, now we are developing a new application so that the visitors can create account on the website. the best example you can think of is of any telecom service provider, they have their webiste and now is creating a login facility for it's customers so the users can create an account and can subscribe for ebill sort of facilties. Hope the situation is clear now. for this particular application, i intend to have a web server, an application server, a DB server, one SMTP server and one AD server(for authentication of users and for saving the profiles also). My question here starts on AD front, here do i need AD DS or AD LDS here, what i need from AD is 1) provide user authentication, 2) provide role based access. this is my query. hope i'll get the answer very soon.

I have got the cuda driver, toolkit and sdk installed in Ubuntu 10.04. I'm using nVidia Geforce 8600 GT card. Official website says my card is CUDA supported. But on running the deviceQuery that comes with the cuda sdk, I'm getting the following output. ./deviceQuery Starting... CUDA Device Query (Runtime API) version (CUDART static linking) There is no device supporting CUDA deviceQuery, CUDA Driver = CUDART, CUDA Driver Version = 134566327, CUDA Runtime Version = 0.0, NumDevs = 0 PASSED Press <Enter> to Quit... Open the LOV of af:inputListOfValues with a double click

To open the LOV popup of an af:inputListOfValues component in ADF Faces, you either click the magnifier icon to the right of the input field or tab onto the icon and press the Enter key. If you want to open the same dialog in response to a user double click into the LOV input field, JavaScript is a friend. For this solution, I assume you created an editable table or input form that is based on a View Object that contains at least one attribute that has a model driven list of values defined. The Default List Type is should be set to Input Text with List of Values so that when the form or table gets created, the attribute is rendered by the af:inputListOfValues component. To implement the use case, drag a Client Listener component from the Operations accordion in the Component Palette and drop it onto the af:inputListOfValues component in the page. In the opened Insert Client Listener dialog, define the Method as handleLovOnDblclickand choose dblClick in the select list for the Type attribute. MySQL Workbench: Orphaned document changes detected

Each time I open MySQL Workbench, I get this annoying message at the bottom of the screen saying "Orphaned document changes detected". It comes up whether I close all the SQL Editor workspaces or not. Dismissing the error doesn't help either. I did a Google search of the exact error message but it only yields four results. Anyone here who has faced the same issue in the past? How do I clean up these "orphaned documents" or completely disable this message? FYI: I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and the only customization that's made to MySQL Workbench is that I've disabled the query results limit.

However, if I run this from a computer that has network access to the domain (through a L2L VPN) I get the error: Exception calling "FindAll" with "0" argument(s): "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings.
