• Access functions from user control without events?

  I have an application made with usercontrols and a function on main form that removes the previous user controls and shows the desired usercontrol centered and tweaked: public void DisplayControl(UserControl uControl) I find it much easier to make this function static or access this function by reference from the user control, like this: MainForm mainform_functions = (MainForm)Parent; mainform_functions.DisplayControl(uc_a); You probably think it's a sin to access a function in mainform, from the usercontrol, however, raising an event seems much more complex in such case - I'll give a simple example - let's say I raise an event from usercontrol_A to show usercontrol_B on mainform, so I write this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); }; Now what if I want usercontrol_B to also have an event to show usercontrol_C? now it would look like this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); uc_b.show_uc_c += (s2,e2) => {usercontrol_C uc_c = new usercontrol_C(); DisplayControl(uc_c);} }; THIS LOOKS AWFUL! The code is much simpler and readable when you actually access the function from the usercontrol itself, therefore I came to the conclusion that in such case it's not so terrible if I break the rules and not use events for such general function, I also think that a readable usercontrol that you need to make small adjustments for another app is preferable than a 100% 'generic' one which makes my code look like a pile of mud. What is your opinion? Am I mistaken?

• Copying photos from camera stalls - how to track down issue?

  When I copy files from my camera (connected via USB) to the SSD in my laptop a few files get copied and then the copy stalls. I'm not sure why, any ideas or things to investigate appreciated, or bug reports to go and look at. I have read this answer - the camera (Canon 40D in case that matters) mounts fine using gvfs. I can see the photos in Nautilus, or in the terminal (in /run/user/username/gvfs/... ) and I can copy a few photos, but not many. Using the terminal or Nautilus the process hangs until the camera goes to sleep. Digikam fails to copy any at all, as does Rapid Photo Downloader. Shotwell did manage it in the end, but that is very much a work around for me. I have disabled thumbnail generation by nautilus. Load average stays about 1 while this is happening, while CPU usage is half idle, half wait (and a little user/sys for other programs). None of the programs at the top of the cpu list in top are related to copying photos. • Ranking drop after using reverse proxy for blog subdirectory and robots.txt for old blog subdomain

  We have a 3Dcart store and a WordPress blog hosted on a separate server. Originally, we had a CNAME set up to point the blog to http://blog.example.com/. However, in our attempt to boost link-based and traffic-based authority on the main site, we've opted to do a reverse proxy to http://www.example.com/blog/. It’s been about two months since we finished the reverse proxy migration. It appears that everything is technically working as intended, including some robots and sitemap changes; the new URLs are even generating some traffic, as indicated on Google Analytics. While Google has been indexing the new URL locations, they’re ranking very poorly, even for non-competitive, long-tail keywords. Meanwhile, the old subdomain URLs are still ranking mostly as well as they used to (even though they aren’t showing meta titles and descriptions due to being blocked by robots.txt). Our working theory is that Google has an old index of the subdomain URLs, and is considering the new URLs to be duplicate content, since it’s being told not to crawl the subdomain and therefore can’t see the rel canonicals we have in place. To resolve this, we’ve updated the subdomain’s robot.txt to no longer block crawling and indexing. Theoretically, seeing the canonical tag on the subdomain pages will resolve any perceived duplicate content issues. In the meantime, we were wondering if anyone would have any other ideas. We are very concerned that we’ll be losing valuable traffic, as we’re entering our on season at the moment.

• In launcher, disable the music suggestion section

  Everytime I want to launch an office program, I begin typing "of" in the launcher, and... pictures of lightly-clothed ladies show up. Not the end of the world, but because I do this a lot in front of customers and bosses, it is often embarrassing. I have already disabled Zeitgeist and "recently used". Banshee does not have any Zeitgeist item in Edit > Preferences > Extensions. Is there a way to disable this "Music" section in the launcher suggestions? Or maybe I just must stop playing dance music via Banshee...

• GWT combobox not displaying correctly

  Hi, I am using GWT with GWT-EXT running in glassfish. I create 2 combo boxes as follows: import com.extjs.gxt.ui.client.widget.form.ComboBox; import com.extjs.gxt.ui.client.widget.form.SimpleComboBox; this.contentPanel = new ContentPanel(); this.contentPanel.setFrame(true); this.contentPanel.setSize((int)(Window.getClientWidth()*0.95), 600); this.contentPanel.setLayout(new FitLayout()); initWidget(this.contentPanel); SimpleComboBox<String> combo = new SimpleComboBox<String>(); combo.setEmptyText("Select a topic..."); combo.add("String1"); combo.add("String2"); this.contentPanel.add(combo); ComboBox combo1 = new ComboBox(); combo1.setEmptyText("Select a topic..."); ListStore topics = new ListStore(); topics.add("String3"); topics.add("String4"); combo.setStore(topics); this.contentPanel.add(combo1); When these are loaded in the browser (IE 8.0, Firefox 3.6.6 or Chrome 10.0) the combo boxes are shown but don't have the pull down arrow. They look like a text field with the "Select a topic..." text. When you select the text it disappears and if you type a character and then delete it the options are shown (i.e. pull down is invoked) however, there is still no pull down arrow. Does anyone know what the issue might be? Or how I can investigate further? Is it possible to see the actual HTML the browser is getting, when I View Page Source I only get the landing page HTML. As an additional I also have a import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.Grid that does not render correctly. It is in table format but has no grid lines or header bar etc. Cheers, James

• An AuthLogic form is giving me incorrect validation errors -- why?

  Hi everyone, I set up AuthLogic for Rails according to the AuthLogic example: http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example. I can log on successfully to the system, but when accessing users/new.html.erb to register a new user, the form returns the following validation errors: Email is too short (minimum is 6 characters) Email should look like an email address. Login is too short (minimum is 3 characters) Login should use only letters, numbers, spaces, and .-_@ please. • session management: verifying a user's log-in state

  I am storing sessions in my database. Everytime a user logs in, I create a new row corresponding to the new session, generate a new session id and send it as a cookie to the browser. My session data looks something like this: { 'user_id': 1234 'user_name': 'Sam' ... } When a request comes, I check whether a cookie with a session id is sent. If it is, I fetch session data from my database (or memcache) corresponding to that session id. When the user logs out, I remove the session data from my database (and memcache), and delete the cookie from the user's browser too. Notice that in my session data, I don't have something like logged_in: true. This is because if I find a session record in the database (or memcache) I deduce that the user is logged in, and if there is no session record found, the user is not logged in. My question is: is this the right approach? Should I have a logged_in key in my session data? Is there any possibility that a session record may be present on the server where the corresponding user is actually NOT logged in? Are there any security implications in having or not having such a key?

  I am a high school student and I need a laptop within the budget of 650$. I usually have a browser, microsoft office, music, and possibly a movie or something open at once. Will the HP ENVY 4's Intel Core i3 processor be enough to handle this or would I have to get the Samsung series 5 13 inch ultrabook to get this job done? I really like the look of the HP ENVY 4, but I also want a laptop that will be quick enough to handle my needs. PLEASE HELP!

• What kind of language will replace C++ as C++ replaced C ? [closed]

  I think I'm not totally wrong when thinking that C++0x (or C++1x) is still C++, just better, with functionnalities coming from boost. I can't stop thinking that computer sciences, even with all that has been made so far, have to evolve again. I don't really like D since it just try to be some sort of "what C++ should have been", and Go seems to be too sophisticated when I dig a little into it, especially after watching some presentation video like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKnDgT73v8s The first thing that come into my mind is a new kind of syntax to directly handle specific datatypes and containers such as map, vectors, queues... What kind of things are researchers thinking about ? What are the real features that could make C++ better or a new C-like language could invent ? Does Go features such things ? Would there be a new kind of syntax that would "unbloat" C++ while keeping its advantages ? Could C++ have some of the interesting stuff of languages such as C# and ObjC ? EDIT: Please consider that I'm talking about a system language, not a VM/CLI/bytecode thing.

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

I included config.action_controller.consider_all_requests_local = false in my environment.rb. But is not working. My browser shows: Routing Error No route matches "/555" with {:method=>:get} So, it looks like the rescues are not fired. I get the following in my log file: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/555" with {:method=>:get}): Rendering rescues/layout (not_found) Is there some routing interfering with the code? I'm not sure what to look for. I'm running rails 2.3.5. • Best way to find freelance c# developer

  I am a developer based in London developing a desktop WPF business application using c# (+ MVVM/DDD/Nhibernate/Unity/Postsharp...). I need to find someone to review my code to suggest improvements and then to write integration tests. This could potentially be an ongoing relationship, expanding into writing new features etc. It would suit an experienced developer with a strong interest in design principles and writing clean code, who can work part time. However, the developer would need to work at my home based office (although timing is flexible). Websites such as elance and odesk seem to tie you in, and I would prefer to pay a one off introduction fee and then deal with the developer direct. Stack exchange seems quite expensive but is a possibility if I don't find an alternative. So, are there any other websites I can try?

  There are a number of reasons why you may want to change the folder that you store the TFS Cache. It can take up “some” amount of room so moving it to another drive can be beneficial. This is the source control Cache that TFS uses to cache data from the database. Moving the Cache is pretty easy and should allow you to organise your server space a little more efficiently. You may also get a performance improvement (although small) by putting it on another drive.. Create a new directory to store the Cache. e.g. “d:\TfsCache\” Figure: Create a new folder Give the local TFS WPG group full control of the directory   Figure: You need to use the App Tier Service WPG In the application tier web.config (~\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config) add the following setting (to the appSettings section). • How to disable DisplayInfo for Intel i810 when there is no xorg.conf

  I'm testing Ubuntu 12.04 on an office desktop. This machine has an integrated Intel i810. This very machine used to run Ubuntu (or kubuntu) quite well, until the natty narwhal release, when the xserver started freezing. This seems to be caused by an issue with a call to the video bios, which can be circumvented by disabling the option DisplayInfo. I tried creating an xorg.conf by using Xorg -configure, but it produced an error after trying to make a file. I did have a file, and I put it in /etc/X11 with DisplayInfo false (maybe it wants "disabled"?), but it wouldn't boot at all until I removed that xorg.conf. There is no 10-monitor.conf file either. All I want to do is set the appropriate option so that my intel display doesn't freeze. Is there any other way I can disable the DisplayInfo? Andrew
