  • SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127

    EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go.   • How to manage Media Center Extender schedule from Media Center in Windows7

    I want to have several machines set up as digital signage displays and pull media (.pptx, video, images etc) from a centralized place. This is easy enough, but what I really need help doing is managing which extenders play specific media and the schedule from a Windows 7 x64 client hopefully within Media Center but I'm open to another management app. Is it possible to dictate the time and location each media is pushed to? I can use either a full machine running a full Win7 OS or a simple MC extender.

  • Firefox 3.5.6 causes entire computer to freeze

    Here's the situation: Environment: Just installed a fresh copy of Win7 Pro 32-bit to NTFS partition on 750GB SATA drive Hardware: E8400 3GHz ASUS P5QL Pro 4GB DDR2 1066 RAM EVGA 9800 GTX+ Plenty of cooling, no problems with hardware before Data is stored on a separate partition, including My Documents No security software is yet installed No extensions installed yet Problem: While using Firefox, sometimes the entire computer will freeze/hang. I get no mouse or keyboard input, can't CTRL+ALT+DEL, no "not responding" indication, just a static image on my display. My drivers are all up to date as far as I'm aware (I just installed this copy of Windows last week). I first noticed this when trying to install Xmarks. I went to the Xmarks site and tried to install and it would freeze. I managed to get it installed (Safe mode and the Mozilla addon site worked), but when I go to configure it (log in, etc), the computer freezes. I don't think it's a matter of usage time or memory issues, because while testing, I browsed wallpaper galleries for about 30 minutes, sometimes as many as 12-15 tabs open at a time, without issue. Sometimes I won't even try to install Xmarks at it will hang. I can install (some) other extensions, the only one I've tried is download status bar (which works). What I've done to try to fix: Restarted (duh) Windows safe mode Completely remove Firefox and install it to a new directory, according to Mozilla's KB (I haven't tried the profile manager, though I assume this does the same thing, except perhaps more thoroughly) Some BIOS changes, including Power options, disabling oveclocking (it was a modest overclock on the CPU, which has run Win7 beta and RC for almost a year now) Memtest Used another Windows user profile, same tragic results I'm STUCK now, with no idea what to do. I'm using Chrome as my main browser at the moment, but that's not something I want to be stuck with. I like Firefox and want to use it. I'm going to try creating a new profile first. One thing I did notice: I started leaving task manager and performance monitor open when anticipating (but dreading) a freeze. firefox.exe had low CPU and low memory, but it looked like overall disk usage was seeing some spikes on the small graph Performance Monitor gives you. I saw on one blog post a fellow using XP moved his Local Settings directory from a separate drive to his main drive, and that solved it, but I don't think my AppData directory is on my D: drive, and that's on the same physical device anyways. Still, something that might be worth trying. I'd extremely appreciate any help. Thanks very much. I really don't want to reinstall Windows from scratch again :( Anthony Aziz

    I always see the configuring ms office with a an endless progress bar, 2 or more weeks after I installed ms office(2000, 2003, 2010 beta). I'm not exactly sure what it is called but it is trying to configure ms office.Or maybe repairing the installation. And it sucks because when I need to access ms word NOW, I can only see that box with the progress bar. And when I press cancel, it won't open ms word, or maybe the whole suite(ms word, powerpoint, excel) What might be a possible solution to this?anyone here who has encountered it before

  • Create Excel (.XLS and .XLSX) file from C#

    What is the best tool for creating an Excel Spreadsheet with C#. Ideally, I would like open source so I don't have to add any third party dependencies to my code, and I would like to avoid using Excel directly to create the file (using OLE Automation.) The .CSV file solution is easy, and is the current way I am handling this, but I but I would like to control the output formats. EDIT: I am still looking at these to see the best alternative for my solution. Interop will work, but it requires Excel to be on the machine you are using. Also the OLEDB method is intriguing, but may not yield much more than what I can achieve with CSV files. I will look more into the 2003 xml format, but that also puts a Excel 2003 requirement on the file. I am currently looking at a port of the PEAR (PHP library) Excel Writer that will allow some pretty good XLS data and formatting and it is in the Excel_97 compatible format that all modern versions of Excel support.     I have Microsoft Project Professional 2003 installed (11.2.2005.1801.15, SP2). I have been trying to open a MPP file created in a newer version so need the converter, which is part of SP3. But when I try to install the SP3 package (as downloaded from Microsoft's site) I get an error message box: --------------------------- Project 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) --------------------------- The expected version of the product was not found on your system. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Project (and Office) are licensed and otherwise work correctly.   • Rails - MS-SQL Server problems (unixODBC, FreeTDS) on Mac 10.6

    Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct.   • OpenSwan IPsec connection drops after 30 seconds

    I'm trying to connection from my Linux Mint 16 box to a CloudStack server. Building up the connection works (pings work across the tunnel). However 30 seconds later the IPsec tunnel gets terminated out of the blue. What could cause this consistent behaviour and how to fix it? The tunnel is setup using OpenSwan (U2.6.38/K(no kernel code presently loaded)) with the L2TP IPsec VPN manager from Werner Jaeger 1.0.9.   • Embedded Linux or eCos ?

    One way to look at it - embedded Linux starts with desktop Linux & ditches the parts not needed for embedded systems (is this actually true?), whereas eCos is designed from the ground up for embedded systems. Now, assume an ARM processor, probably ARM 7 - does performance make a difference? Actually, we talking a very low load system, max 500 transactions a day. Any advantages of one over the other (or FreeRTOS, etc)? Stability, maturity, performance, development tools, anything else? All that I can think of is that if I am certain that I will never port to another o/s, then if I go with embedded Linux, I don't need an o/s abstraction layer to allow me to do unit testing on host (desktop Linux box). Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.

  • Cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine

    I cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine. My machine is Windows 7. I am able to get a remote machine to send NLog messages to my local box and NLogViewer on my local box shows the message fine. But, if I run an app locally, and config NLog to spit messages to my local box, NLogViewer doesn't get the messages. Here's my config: <targets> <target name="viewer" xsi:type="NLogViewer" address="udp://localhost:4050"/> </targets> <rules> <logger name="*" minlevel="Info" writeTo="viewer" /> <rules> Is it Windows 7 security? I have config'd Windows Firewall to allow UDP port 4050 inbound and outbound. My apps are an ASP.NET site and a few windows services.

  • Thrift client-server multiple roles

    Hi, this is my first question, so sorry if the form is wrong! I'm trying to make thrift server (python) and client (c++). However I need to exchange messages in both direction. Client should register (call server's function and wait), and server should listen on same port for N (N- 100k) incoming connections (clients). After some conditions are satisfied, server needs to call functions on each client and collect results and interpret them. I'm little confused, and first questions is "can this be done in Thrift"? Second question is related to mechanism that will allow me bidirectional communication. I guess that I will need two services. One with client's functions other with server's. But I'm confused with calling code. I understand one way communication (calling functions from server), but with calling functions from client side I have a problem. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

  • xterm window gets stuck after some time

    I am using xterm on RHEL with KDE. Usually after a couple of days, the xterm terminals get stuck i.e. I am not able to resize or relocate them. After this, even if I open a new terminal, it is stuck the same way. What I do is logout and login again. Is this a bug with xterm? Is there a known solution?

    These answers don't satisfy MY needs. My mobile supports .3gp and .avi formats 3gp files are always smaller in size but with least quality (especially audio part) Avi (certainly) exhibits better quality but the video converter I am using (namely Xillisoft VidConverter) outputs avi file with very high size, which isn't suitable for portable devices So I'm looking for (essentially free or open source) software that creates smaller files with a better quality than 3gp! thank you :-)
