• How do I set YUI2 paginator to select a page other than the first page?

  I have a YUI DataTable (YUI 2.8.0r4) with AJAX pagination. Each row in the table links to a details/editing page and I want to link from that details page back to the list page that includes the record from the details page. So I have to a) offset the AJAX data correctly and b) tell YAHOO.widget.Paginator which page to select. According to my reading of the YUI API docs, I have to pass in the initialPage configuration option. I've attempted this, but it doesn't take (the data from AJAX is correctly offset, but the paginator thinks I'm on page 1, so clicking "next" takes me from e.g. page 6 to page 2. What am I not doing (or doing wrong)? • Which java web technology to learn to develop Rich Internet Applications ?

  Hi, I have developed web applications using JSF (myfaces components). But in these days of responsive UI, JSF doesnt fare well. I m hearing a lot about AJAX, GWT, etc. So i wanted your opinion on which web technology/framework should i learn inorder to develop web applications for enterprise products. Some of the web technologies that i m hearing are: ICE Faces (With AJAX Bridge support) GWT extJS and extGWT JavaFX Apache Wicket Jquery AJAX Open laszlo Which of the above or the combination of the above would help me ? Some of the parameters on which you can rate these web technologies are: Ease of learning Maintainability of web application code Community support IDE support - Eclipse or NetBeans Off the shelf component availability (like textbox,table grids, option menus) License - Does it cost for commercial use ? User Experience - responsive UI. Shouldnt be sluggish A similar question on SO does answer my question partially. Would want more info though. EDIT: Answers collated: Based on the answers : AJAX would be the best thing to start for learning fundamentals, then learn JQUERY. Any component based frame work that can complement ajax,jquery ? Edit 2: If i had to design a web application like StackOverFlow (in java platform) which would be the best choice to learn and adopt?   I'm having quite some trouble with the WCF Callback mechanism. They sometimes work but most of the time they don't.   Hi. I am developing an Eclipse plug-in and I'd like to associate a new menu (at the top of the screen along with File, Edit etc) with a perspective I'm creating. I did the menu ok but it is being displayed even in other perspectives. How can I associate it only with my perspective? • Execute javascript on IIS server

  I have the following situation. A customer uses JavaScript with jQuery to create a complex website. We would like to use JavaScript and jQuery on the server (IIS) for the following reasons: Skills transfer - we would like to use JavaScript and jQuery on the server and not have to use eg VB Script. / classic asp. .Net framework/Java etc is ruled out because of this. Improved options for search/accessibility. We would like to be able to use jQuery as a templating system, but this isn't viable for search engines and users with js turned off - unless we can selectively run this code on the server. There is significant investment in IIS and Windows Server, so changing that is not an option. I know you can run jScript on IIS using windows Script host, but am unsure of the scalability and the process surrounding this. I am also unsure whether this would have access to the DOM. Here is a diagram that hopefully explains the situation. I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar?

• Can I use a property placeholder with Spring EL?

  Before upgrading to Spring 3 I had this in my applicationContext.xml file: <bean class="com.northgateis.pole.ws.PolePayloadValidatingInterceptor"> <property name="validateRequest" value="${validateRequest}" /> <property name="validateResponse" value="${validateResponse}" /> </bean> where ${validateRequest) and ${validateRequest) refer to properties that may or may not be defined in my properties file. In Spring 2, if these proeprties were not present in the properties file the setters on the bean were not called and so the defaults hard-coded in PolePayloadValidatingInterceptor were used. • Consuming C# Webservice

  Hi, I have a simple webservice running and I have a console application client consuming the service. I did have issues getting this running and I had been helped by some wonderful people in this community. I have another problem, if i want to call the service from the client in a loop, it doesnt work. It works only for the first time and then it just keeps waiting. Why is this happening and how can I resolve it. • BackgroundWorker might be causing my application to hang

  I have a Form that uses a BackgroundWorker to execute a series of tests. I use the ProgressChanged event to send messages to the main thread, which then does all of the updates on the UI. I've combed through my code to make sure I'm not doing anything to the UI in the background worker. There are no while loops in my code and the BackgroundWorker has a finite execution time (measured in seconds or minutes). However, for some reason when I lock my computer, often times the application will be hung when I log back in. The thing is, the BackgroundWorker isn't even running when this happens. The reason I believe it is related to the BackgroundWorker though is because the form only hangs when the BackgroundWorker has been executed since the application was loaded (it only runs when given a certain user input). I pass this thread a List of TreeNodes from a TreeView in my UI through the RunWorkerAsync method, but I only read those nodes in the worker thread..any modifications I make to them is done in the UI thread through the progressChanged event. I do use Thread.Sleep in my worker thread to execute tests at timed intervals (which involves sending messages over a TCP socket, which was not created in the worker thread). I am completely perplexed as to why my application might be hanging. I'm sure I'm doing something 'illegal' somewhere, I just don't know what.

• Best strategy for moving data between physical tiers in ASP.net

  Building a new ASP.net application, and planning to separate DB, 'service' tier and Web/UI tier into separate physical layers. What is the best/easiest strategy to move serialized objects between the service tier and the UI tier? I was considering serializing POCOs into JSON using simple ASP.net pages to serve the middle tier. Meaning that the UI/Web tier will request data from a (hidden to the outside user) web server that will return a JSON string. This kind of JSON 'emitter' seems easily testable. It also seems easily compressible for efficiently moving data over the WAN between tiers. I know that some folks use .asmx webservices for this kind of task, but this seems like there is excess overhead with SOAP, and the package is not as human readable (testable) as POCOs serialized as JSON. Others are using more complex technology like WCF which we have never used. Does anyone have advice for choosing a method for moving data/objects between the data (db) tier and the web (UI) tier over the WAN using .net technologies? Thanks!!!

• What is SSIS order of data transformation component method calls

  I am working on a custom data transformation component. I'm using NUnit and NMock2 to test as I code. Testing and getting the custom UI and other features right is a huge pain, in part because I can't find any documentation about the order in which SSIS invokes methods on the component at design time as well as runtime. I can correct the issues readily enough, but it's tedious and time consuming to unregister the old version, register the new version, fire up the test ssis package, try to display the UI, get an obscure error message, backtrace it, modify the component and continue. One of the big issues involves the UI component needing access to the componentmetadata and buffermanager properties of the component at design time, and what I need to provide for to support properties that won't be initialized until after the user enters them in the UI. I can work through it; but if someone knows of some docs or tips that would speed me up, I'd greatly appreciate it. The samples I've found havn't been much use; they seem to be directed to showing off cool stuff (Twitter, weather.com) rather than actual work. Thanks in advance.

• Consuming WCF Web Service

  Hi, I have a simple web service running and I have a console application client consuming the service. I did have issues getting this running and I had been helped by some wonderful people in this community. I have another problem: if I want to call the service from the client in a loop, it doesn't work. It works only for the first time and then it just keeps waiting. Why is this happening and how can I resolve it. • Python Twisted Client Connection Lost

  I have this twisted client, which connects with a twisted server having an index. I ran this client from command-line. It worked fine. Now I modified it to run in loop (see main()) so that I can keep querying. But the client runs only once. Next time it simply says connection lost \n Connection lost - goodbye!. • What information should a SVN/Versioned file commit comment contain?

  I'm curious what kind of content should be in a versioned file commit comment. Should it describe generally what changed (e.g. "The widget screen was changed to display only active widgets") or should it be more specific (e.g. "A new condition was added to the where clause of the fetchWidget query to retrieve only active widgets by default") How atomic should a single commit be? Just the file containing the updated query in a single commit (e.g. "Updated the widget screen to display only active widgets by default"), or should that and several other changes + interface changes to a screen share the same commit with a more general description like ("Updated the widget screen: A) display only active widgets by default B) added button to toggle showing inactive widgets") I see subversion commit comments being used very differently and was wondering what others have had success with. Some comments are as brief as "updated files", while others are many paragraphs long, and others are formatted in a way that they can be queried and associated with some external system such as JIRA. I used to be extremely descriptive of the reason for the change as well as the specific technical changes. Lately I've been scaling back and just giving a general "This is what I changed on this page" kind of comment.

• Using XPath on String in Android (JAVA)

  I am looking for some examples of using xpath in Android? Or if anyone can share their experiences. I have been struggeling to make tail or head of this problem :-( I have a string that contains a standard xml file. I believe I need to convert that into an xml document. • Website running JavaScript setInterval starts to fail after ~1day

  I wish I could be more specific here, but unfortunately this might be hard. I basically hope this is some "well"-known timeout or setup issue. We have a website running an (JS/html - ASP.net project) website overview on a screen at a factory. This screen has no keyboard so it should keep refreshing the page forever - years perhaps (though 1 week might be okay). (It is used by factory workers to see incoming transports etc.) This all works perfectly; the site continuously updates itself and gets the new correct data. Then, sometimes, in the morning this "overview" screen has no data and the workers have to manually refresh the site using the simple refresh button or F5 - which fixes everything. I have tried a few things trying to reproduce the error myself including: Cutting the internet connection and MANY other ways of making it timeout (breakpoints, stopping services etc.). Setting the refresh time of setInterval to 100ms and letting the site run 3-5 minutes. (normal timer is 1 minute) setInterval SHOULD run forever according to the internet searching I have done. Checked that "JavaScript frequency" has not been turned down in power saving settings. No matter what; the site resumes correct function WITHOUT a refresh as soon as I plug in the internet cable or whatever again - I can't reproduce the error. The website is dependent on a backend WCF service and project integration, but since the workers are fixing this with a simple refresh I am assuming this has not crashed. EDIT: The browser I tried to reproduce the error in was IE/win7. I will ask about the factory tomorrow, but I am guessing IE/win? also. Is setInterval in fact really infinite or is there something else wrong here? All help much appreciated. 0.5 bitcoin reward for solving answer ;)

• How to keep your unit test Arrange step simple and still guarantee DDD invariants ?

  DDD recommends that the domain objects should be in a valid state at any time. Aggregate roots are responsible for guaranteeing the invariants and Factories for assembling objects with all the required parts so that they are initialized in a valid state. However this seems to complicate the task of creating simple, isolated unit tests a lot. Let's assume we have a BookRepository that contains Books. A Book has : an Author a Category a list of Bookstores you can find the book in These are required attributes : a book has to have an author, a category and at least a book store you can buy the book from. There's likely to be a BookFactory since it is quite a complex object, and the Factory will initialize the Book with at least all the mentioned attributes. Now we want to unit test a method of the BookRepository that returns all the Books. To test if the method returns the books, we have to set up a test context (the Arrange step in AAA terms) where some Books are already in the Repository. If the only tool at our disposal to create Book objects is the Factory, the unit test now also uses and is dependent on the Factory and inderectly on Category, Author and Store since we need those objects to build up a Book and then place it in the test context. Would you consider this is a dependency in the same way that in a Service unit test we would be dependent on, say, a Repository that the Service would call ? How would you solve the problem of having to re-create a whole cluster of objects in order to be able to test a simple thing ? How would you break that dependency and get rid of all these attributes we don't need in our test ? By using mocks or stubs ? If you mock up things a Repository contains, what kind of mock/stubs would you use as opposed to when you mock up something the object under test talks to or consumes ?
