• Creating PDF Documents with ASP.NET and iTextSharp

  The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, an eCommerce store may offer a "printable receipt" option that, when selected, displays a PDF file within the browser. Last week's article, Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp, looked at how to work with a special kind of PDF document, namely one that has one or more fields defined. A PDF document can contain various types of user interface elements, which are referred to as fields. For instance, there is a text field, a checkbox field, a combobox field, and more. Typically, the person viewing the PDF on her computer interacts with the document's fields; however, it is possible to enumerate and fill a PDF's fields programmatically, as we saw in last week's article. This article continues our investigation into iTextSharp, a .NET open source library for PDF generation, showing how to use iTextSharp to create PDF documents from scratch. We start with an example of how to programmatically define and piece together paragraphs, tables, and images into a single PDF file. • .NET access to the GPU for compute purposes

  In the distant past I talked about GPGPU and Microsoft's then approach of DirectCompute. Since then of course we now have C++ AMP coming out with Visual Studio 11, so there is a mainstream easier way for developers to access the GPU for compute purposes, using C++. The question occasionally arises of how can a .NET developer access the GPU for compute purposes from their C# (or VB) code. The answer is by interoping from the managed code to a native DLL and in the native DLL use C++ AMP. As a long term .NET developer myself, I can tell you this is straightforward. Sure, there could have been a managed wrapper for C++ AMP, but honestly that is the reason we have interop – it doesn't make much sense to invest resources to solve a problem that is already solved (most developer customers would prefer investments in other areas of Visual Studio!).   Its been long due I was planning to write an article on creating some useful ASP.NET MVC application. I have code named it "DailyJournal". Its a simple application which allows creation of multiple activities and assign tasks to these activities. Its' kind of "Yet another Task/Todo application". Some points of warning before we move further with this application. This is just an early prototype. As such many of the design principles have been ignored. But, I try to cover that up in the next update once I get my head around this. The application in its current state supports the following features Create users Assign Activities to users Assign tasks to activities Assign a status to a task The user creation/authentication is being done by the default Membership provider. Most of the activities are highly visual i.e. you can drag-drop task to different areas, in-place edition of task details and so on.   The following are the current issues with the design which I promise to refactor in the second version. • Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

  The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh. • Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1)

  Over the past couple of months I've been working on a couple of projects that have used the free Google Maps API to add interactive maps and geocoding capabilities to ASP.NET websites. In a nutshell, the Google Maps API allow you to display maps on your website, to add markers onto the map, and to compute the latitude and longitude of an address, among many other tasks. With some Google Maps API experience under my belt, I decided it would be fun to implement a store locator feature and share it here on 4Guys. A store locator lets a visitor enter an address or postal code and then shows the nearby stores. Typically, store locators display the nearby stores on both a map and in a grid, along with the distance between the entered address and each store within the area. This article is the first in a multi-part series that walks through how to add a store locator feature to your ASP.NET application. In this inaugural article, we'll build the database table to hold the store information. Next, we'll explore how to use the Google Maps API's geocoding feature to allow for flexible address entry and how to translate an address into latitude and longitude pairs. Armed with the latitude and longitude coordinates, we'll see how to retrieve nearby locations as well as how to compute the distance between the address entered by the visitor and the each nearby store. • ASP.NET Session Management

  Great article (a little old but still relevant) about the inner workings of session management in ASP.NET: Underpinnings of the Session State Management Implementation in ASP.NET.   Using StateServer and the BinaryFormatter serialization occuring caused me quite the headache over the last few days. Curiously, it appears the w3wp.exe process actually consumes more memory when utilizing StateServer and storing somewhat large and complex data types in session.   Users began experiencing Out Of Memory exceptions in the production environment. Looking at the stack trace it related to serialization using the BinaryFormatter. Using remote debugging against our QA server I noted that the code in the application functioned without issue. The exception occured outside the context of the application itself when the request had completed and the web server was trying to serialize session state into the StateServer.   The short term solution is switching back to the InProc method. Thus far this has proven to consume considerably less memory and has caused no issues. Long term the complex object stored in session will be off-loaded into a web service used to access the information directly from the database outside the context of the object used to encapsulate it.

  OK, so for some reason you have a mega mashup solution with ASP.net AJAX, jQuery and web forms.  Perhaps you are just on the migration from AjaxControlToolkit to the jQuery UI framework – who knows!! Anyway, the problem is that when you post back with something like an UpdatePanel, you will find that your nicely setup jQuery stuff, like the datepicker for example will no longer work. You may have something like this… $(document).ready(function () {     $(".date-edit").datepicker({ dateFormat: "dd/mm/yy", firstDay: 1, showOtherMonths: true, selectOtherMonths: true }); });   When you’re ASP.net UpdatePanel post back, you will find that your datepicker has gone.  Bugger! Well you need to add this little gem to set it back up again once the UpdatePanel comes back to the page. var prm = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance(); prm.add_endRequest(function () {     $(".date-edit").datepicker({ dateFormat: "dd/mm/yy", firstDay: 1, showOtherMonths: true, selectOtherMonths: true }); });   Or like me, you would have a javascript function, something like InitPage(); do all your work in there and call that on document.ready and endRequest.   Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations. • Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button. • "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported."

  OMG, a new lesson! Will wonders never cease? So I ran into an interesting issue setting up a WCF service to consume an MSMQ queue. I won't bother you with the details of how to actually build a WCF/MSMQ service; there are plenty of tutorials on the subject. I want to share with you an interesting error that I ran into and the surprisingly simple fix. The error occurs when attempting to generate a Service Reference or even simply browsing to the WSDL of your WCF/MSMQ service in the form of a YSOD with the following error: "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." After a lot of Googling on the subject turning up plenty of questions with the same error but no answers. So I went digging into some application level config files on a server that already had a WCF/MSMQ service successfully set up by the network admin, and the answer was amazingly simple: If you are hosting an MSMQ/WCF service in IIS, you have to tell IIS to allow net.msmq protocol. It's in the advanced settings for the application or site in which you are hosting the service. .... aaaand, that's it.

  I've worked out how to get my linux based Netbeans PHP development machine to behave much like what happens when you create a new ASP.Net project in Visual Studio. Firstly create multiple PHP project in Netbeans,say for example mysite1 and mysite2. Next edit the apache2/sites-enabled/000-default file and add two virtualhost sections as below <VirtualHost 127.0.1.1> ServerName mysite1.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite1/ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 127.0.2.1> ServerName mysite2.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite2/ </VirtualHost> For each site you add, pick a different ip address similar to the above where I use the third octet to increment, next edit the etc/hosts file and add the following two lines 127.0.1.1 mysite1.localhost 127.0.2.1 mysite2.localhost Then in Netbeans, go to File->Project Properties click on 'Run Configuration' and set 'Project Url' to http://mysite1.localhost for the first project and http://mysite2.localhost for the second project. That will give you a PHP development box which develops multiple PHP projects similar to how a Visual Studio Windows based box handles multiple ASP.Net sites. Hope this helps someone :)

  Yesterday I talked about the Browsers we see being used by our readers driven off of our Google Analytics traffic and today I want to share with you the Screen Resolutions we see.  As a web developer most of my life, it is hard to decide how large you should build your application because typically you have a couple huge high resolution monitors on your desk, but you typical end user is thought to have 1024x768.  With HTML5/CSS3 out, it is a little better coming up with a design that will scale to all resolutions, but it is still nice to know the numbers when it comes to how much real estate do I have on my clients. If you look at these numbers for Geekswithblogs.net, we have a lot of high resolution monitors from users that visit the site.  After a little more investigation of the number you will notice we do not have as much height available as we do width.  If the primary goal of a site is to deliver as much data in the viewable area without scrolling, this becomes a challenge when most of our pages have long pieces of formatted data.  So our challenge is to build skins that use up more of the sides of the content toward the top on larger resolution browsers and then entice the reader to scroll to get the goodies embedded in the content of the posts.  Going to be an interesting battle for sure, but we really need more skin offerings on the site. • Including Microsoft.XNA.Framework.Input.Touch in a project?

  So after running through tutorials by both Microsoft and www.xnadevelopment.com I feel very confident in my ability to get to work on my first game using the XNA Framework. I've manipulated sprites, added audio, changed game states, and even went a step further to apply the knowledge I had and figure out how to make animations and basic 2-dimensional physics (including impulses, force, acceleration, and speed calculations) But then shortly into the project I hit a curious bump that I've been unable to figure out. In wanting to implement menus, pause screens, and several different aspects of play (a "pre-level" prep screen, the level itself, and a screen after the level to review how well you did) I took a look at Microsoft's Game State Management sample. I understood the concept, although it was admittedly quite a lot to take in. Not wanting to recreate the entire concept by scratch (after all- what purpose would that serve?) I tried copying and pasting the sample code into my own ScreenManager class (as well as InputState and GameScreen classes) to try and borrow their ingenuity. When I did this, however, my project stopped compiling. I was getting the following error: The type or namespace name 'Touch' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Having read through their sample code already, I realized that this namespace and every function and class within it could be safely ripped from the code without losing functionality. It's a namespace simply for integrating with touchscreen devices (presumably Windows Phone 7, but maybe also tablets). But then I began to wonder- how come Microsoft's sample compiled but mine didn't? I copied their code exactly so there must be a setting somewhere that I need to change in Visual Studio in order to correct this. I tried creating a new project as a Windows Phone 7 game rather than a Windows game, however that only forced it to compile to a Windows Phone emulator and denied me the ability to change the resolution and other features which I clearly had the power to do in the sample code. So my question is simple - how do I properly use the namespace Microsoft.XNA.Framework.Input.Touch?

• Poll on Entity Framework 4 &ndash; one year on

  12 months back (today is March 15th 2010) on the 16th of  March 2009 I created a poll on Entity Framework v1 – the marmite of ORMs? A quick poll…. Entity Framework v1 was getting a mixed reception at the time – I met developers who genuinely hated it and I met developers who were loving the productivity improvements they were seeing. There were definitely issues with v1, too many IMHO. Which is why the product team placed a huge effort on listening to the community to drive the feature set for v2 (which ultimately was named Entity Framework 4 as it ships with .NET 4). I think overall the team have done a great job. It isn’t perfect in .NET 4 (which is why the team are busy on post .NET 4 improvements) but I would happily use it and recommend it for a wide variety of projects – much wider than I would have with v1. I am speaking on EF 4 at www.devweek.com this Wednesday and I thought it would be fun to put a new version of the poll out and see how v4 is being received. Obviously the big difference is we have not yet shipped EF4 vs when I did the original poll on EF1.   How do I set MinWorkingSet and MaxWorking set for a 64-bit .NET process? p.s. I can set the MinWorkingSet and MaxWorking set for a 32-bit process, as follows: [DllImport("KERNEL32.DLL", EntryPoint = "SetProcessWorkingSetSize", SetLastError = true, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] internal static extern bool SetProcessWorkingSetSize(IntPtr pProcess, int dwMinimumWorkingSetSize, int dwMaximumWorkingSetSize); [DllImport("KERNEL32.DLL", EntryPoint = "GetCurrentProcess", SetLastError = true, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] internal static extern IntPtr MyGetCurrentProcess(); // In main(): SetProcessWorkingSetSize(Process.GetCurrentProcess().Handle, int.MaxValue, int.MaxValue); Update: Unfortunately, even if we do this call, the garbage collection trims the working set down anyway, bypassing MinWorkingSet (see "Automatic GC.Collect() in the diagram below). Question: Is there a way to lock the WorkingSet (the green line) to 1GB, to avoid the spike in page faults (the red lines) that occur when allocating new memory into the process? p.s. Every time a page fault occurs, it blocks the thread for 250us, which hits application performance badly.

  I am trying to determine the number of days between 2 dates using LINQ with Entity Framework. It is telling me that it does not recognize Subtract on the System.TimeSpan class Here is my where portion of the LINQ query. where ((DateTime.Now.Subtract(vid.CreatedDate).TotalDays < maxAgeInDays)) Here is the error I receive in the VS.NET debugger {"LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.TimeSpan Subtract(System.DateTime)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression."} Am I doing something wrong or is there a better way to get the number of days between 2 DateTimes in the entity framework? thanks Michael

  I am getting the following warnings on the Event Log for a Asp.Net WebSite running on IIS 7. Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Server cannot append header after HTTP headers have been sent. at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequest.SendUnknownResponseHeader(String name, String value) at System.Web.HttpResponse.WriteHeaders() at System.Web.HttpResponse.Flush(Boolean finalFlush) at System.Web.HttpRuntime.FinishRequest(HttpWorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context, Exception e) I tried to debug the WebSite but it just does not show in debugger. The web page which has got this issue contains the following. Its a content page with a Master page. It has a grid inside an UpdatePanel which is Triggered by a Timer. On the specified time grid data is refreshed. Everytime this happens we see a new warning in the EventLog. What is the best way to go about this issue?

  Hi, I'm trying to get authentication and authorisation working in an ASP .NET MVC2 site. I've read loads of tutorials and some books which explain how you can use attributes to require authorisation (and membership in a role) like this: [Authorize(Roles="Admin")] public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } I've made classes that implement IIdentity and IPrincipal, I create a userPrincipal object once the user has successfully logged in and I add it to a session variable. When the user goes to another page I want it to set the HttpContext.Current.User to the object that I stored in the session, something like this: if (Session["User"] != null) { HttpContext.Current.User = Session["User"] as MyUser; } My question is: Where abouts do I put the code directly above? I tried Application_AuthenticateRequest but it tells me Session state is not available in this context. Many thanks.
