  • How to unit test generic classes

    - by Rowland Shaw
I'm trying to set up some unit tests for an existing compact framework class library. However, I've fallen at the first hurdle, where it appears that the test framework is unable to load the types involved (even though they're both in the class library being tested) Test method MyLibrary.Tests.MyGenericClassTest.MyMethodTest threw exception: System.MissingMethodException: Could not load type 'MyLibrary.MyType' from assembly 'MyLibrary, Version=1.0.3778.36113, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'.. My code is loosely: public class MyGenericClass<T> : List<T> where T : MyType, new() { public bool MyMethod(T foo) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } With test methods: public void MyMethodTestHelper<T>() where T : MyType, new() { MyGenericClass<T> target = new MyGenericClass<T>(); foo = new T(); expected = true; actual = target.MyMethod(foo); Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual); } [TestMethod()] public void MyMethodTest() { MyMethodTestHelper<MyType>(); } I'm a bit stumped though, as I can't even get it to break in the debugger to get to the inner exception, so what else do I check? EDIT this does seem to be something specific to the Compact Framework - recompiling the class libraries and the unit tests for the full framework, gives the expected output (i.e. the debugger stops when I'm going to throw a NotImplementedException).

  • Why does an authorized OAuth request token need to be exchanged for an access token?

    - by Joe Shaw
I'm wondering what the reasons are for OAuth to require a round-trip to the data provider to exchange an authorized request token for an access token. My understanding of the OAuth workflow is: Requesting site (consumer) gets a request token from the data provider site (service provider). Requesting site asks the data provider site to authenticate the user, passing in a callback. Once the user has been authenticated and authorized the requesting site, the user is directed back to the requesting site (consumer) via the callback provided which passes back the now-authorized request token and a verification code. The requesting site exchanges the request token for an access token. The requesting site uses the access token to get data from the data provider site. Assuming I got that right, why couldn't the callback simply provide the access token to the requesting site directly in step 3, eliminating step 4? Why is the request to exchange the request token for the access token necessary? Does it exist solely for consumers that require users to enter the verification code manually, with the thought that it would be shorter and simpler than the access token itself?

  • How do I enumerate installed OleDb providers for current processor architecture?

    - by Rowland Shaw
I've a project that connects to a dBase format database file, that I've always done in the past with a connection string of the form of: PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=MyData.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE 5.0 I've had to revisit this recently, and have found that when attempting to create an OleDbConnection with that connection string on x64 machines, that have an x86 install of Office on it, it throws an exception. A quick hack of a fix shows that forcing the application to target x86 only makes it work, but I was hoping to be able to tidy this up and check in advance whether it would fail to create the connection, so that I could customise my import options to suit the available providers. Is it possible to enumerate the available data providers for the current processor architecture? (other than relying on catching the exception -- after all, the Framework Design Guidelines suggest that you should only throw in exceptional circumstances, and you have a method to check if something would throw an exception)

  • How do I pass a Yahoo Pipes item into a YQL query?

    - by Joe Shaw
One common thing to want to do in the Yahoo Pipes YQL element is pass in a Pipes value to the YQL query. For example: select * from html.tostring where url='<someurl>' and xpath='//div[@id="foo"]' and you want to pass in a dynamic value for <someurl>. Let's say that it's an RSS feed item's URL called item.link. Attempting to simply replace the quoted someurl with item.link gives you this error: Invalid identifier item.link. me is the only supported identifier in this context How can I pass this value in?

  • Merging all changesets associated with a WorkItem in Team Foundation Server

    - by Rowland Shaw
We're trailing the use of the built in bug tracking, and have written some integration into our helpdesk software that allows for escalation via workitems. One thing I haven't found out how to do, is to merge all changes associated with a work item (say to go from dev branch to main) - I appreciate you can double click on a changeset in the merge dialog to view if it is associated with a workitem, and also that I can select individual changesets, and groups of adjacent changesets; but there doesn't appear to be any way to merge changes by workitem?

  • Is there any difference between "foo is None" and "foo == None"?

    - by Joe Shaw
Is there any difference between: if foo is None: pass and if foo == None: pass The convention that I've seen in most Python code (and the code I myself write) is the former, but I recently came across code which uses the latter. None is an instance (and the only instance, IIRC) of NoneType, so it shouldn't matter, right? Are there any circumstances in which it might?

  • Why is my Pre to Postfix code not working?

  • Glimpse: Open Source Web Development

    - by Elizabeth Ayer
We’re delighted to announce that Red Gate will be backing Glimpse! For those of you who aren’t familiar with the project, Glimpse is an open source tool which does for the server what Firebug does for the client. It’s been in beta for the last year, and we’re very excited to give Glimpse the support and dedicated effort needed to take it to a v1 and beyond. Glimpse’s founders (Nik Molnar and Anthony van der Hoorn) have joined Red Gate, and they’re just as excited as we are about the opportunities that active development of Glimpse will bring. They will continue to write code, support the community and drive the project forward (as they’ve done since its inception). With full-time attention on growing Glimpse and its community, users and developers can expect the project to accelerate, with frequent releases of new functionality. Red Gate is excited about its first major involvement with open source. You may well be wondering, though, why Red Gate is doing this. Glimpse dovetails beautifully with Red Gate’s .NET tools, which makes Glimpse an ideal framework for plugging in advanced, paid-for functionality (like performance analysis) the way web developers want to see it. As a means to this end, we will contribute to the Glimpse open source project in order to broaden its adoption and delight web developers. Since bringing in .NET Reflector in 2008, we’ve learnt sharp lessons from the community about the right and wrong ways to engage with developers, not to mention the enduring value of free. Glimpse further shows what the .NET community can achieve through open source collaboration, and we’re looking forward to working with the Glimpse community to make something enduring and awesome. Nik and Anthony, themselves passionate advocates of community-driven software, will continue to control the Glimpse project, steering it to best meet the needs of its users and contributors. If you have any questions or queries about Glimpse, or Red Gate’s involvement in the project, please tweet with the #glimpse hashtag, contact us at Red Gate on [email protected], or post to the Glimpse Development Forum on Google Groups.

  • Optimizing Transaction Log Throughput

As a DBA, it is vital to manage transaction log growth explicitly, rather than let SQL Server auto-growth events "manage" it for you. If you undersize the log, and then let SQL Server auto-grow it in small increments, you'll end up with a very fragmented log. Examples in the article, extracted from SQL Server Transaction Log Management by Tony Davis and Gail Shaw, demonstrate how this can have a significant impact on the performance of any SQL Server operations that need to read the log.

  • NTUSER.DAT and UsrClass.dat files building up by the thousands, why and can I delete?

    - by Anthony
I've noticed that my web server, 2008 Xen VM, gradually loosing free space - more than I would of though from normal use and decided to investigate. There are two problem areas: *C:\Users\Administrator\ (6,755.0 MB)* with files: NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TM.blf AND C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ (6,743.8 MB) with files UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TM.blf From what I understand these are in-time backups of registry changes. If that is the case I cannot possibly understand why there would be 10000+ changes. (That's how many files there are per folder location, over 20,000 per folder in total.) The files are using almost 15GB of space and I want rid of them, I'm just wondering can I remove them. However, I need to understand why they are being created so I can avoid this in the future. Any ideas why there would be so many? Is there a way I can check to see what is making the modifications? Are they created with login attempts? Are they created in relation to every day Web Server use? etc. and so on

  • Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

The build agent is a windows 2008 server VM hosted on Ubuntu 12.04 under Oracle VirtualBox. I have disabled firewalls on both the Windows and Ubuntu machines. Other VMS with similar configuration can connect fine and do not report this error. What can possibly be preventing this connection?

I use Zerigo's DNS service as SLAVE servers for public use: The Master doesn't receive queries - It's job is to simply create and modify DNS entries locally of which the SLAVE use to serve. Here is an excerpt of the BIND log, I set it to INFO event logging: 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.234 general: info: received control channel command 'reload' 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.234 general: info: loading configuration from 'C:\DNS\BIND\etc\named.conf' 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.234 general: info: using default UDP/IPv4 port range: [1024, 65535] 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.234 general: info: using default UDP/IPv6 port range: [1024, 65535] 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.250 general: info: reloading configuration succeeded 14-Apr-2012 23:00:00.250 general: info: reloading zones succeeded 14-Apr-2012 23:16:22.750 xfer-out: info: client 174.36.24.251#47135: transfer of 'ajmakeup.com/IN': AXFR started 14-Apr-2012 23:16:22.750 xfer-out: info: client 174.36.24.251#47135: transfer of 'ajmakeup.com/IN': AXFR ended 14-Apr-2012 23:16:23.015 xfer-out: info: client 68.71.141.22#36212: transfer of 'ajmakeup.com/IN': AXFR started 14-Apr-2012 23:16:23.031 xfer-out: info: client 68.71.141.22#36212: transfer of 'ajmakeup.com/IN': AXFR ended As you can see there is no problem with Zerigo's DNS servers requesting new DNS data, when I force a reload that is; I don't believe, as per the way they are set as SLAVE, that they poll for changes. However the problem is the other way; the MASTER is not updating the SLAVE servers when reload is run (on the MASTER); it is a batch on a 15 minute timer. Below is my NAMED.CONF: key "rndc-key" { algorithm hmac-md5; secret "REMOVED FOR SECURITY"; }; acl "trusted" { 174.36.24.251/32; 68.71.141.22/32; localhost; }; options { version "not currently available"; directory "C:\DNS\BIND\etc"; allow-query { trusted; }; }; controls { inet 127.0.0.1 port 953 allow { 127.0.0.1; } keys { "rndc-key"; }; }; logging{ channel simple_log { file "C:\DNS\BIND\logging\bind.log" versions 3 size 5m; severity info; print-time yes; print-severity yes; print-category yes; }; category default{ simple_log; }; }; zone "ajmakeup.com" in { type master; file "c:\dns\BIND\zones\db.ajmakeup.com.txt"; allow-transfer { 174.36.24.251; 68.71.141.22; }; allow-update { none; }; }; Does my problem have something to do with 'allow-query' under options? You will notice that 'allow-transfer' is set explicitly on each DNS zone. In case you need it here is my RNDC.CONF: key "rndc-key" { algorithm hmac-md5; secret "REMOVED FOR SECURITY"; }; options { default-key "rndc-key"; default-server 127.0.0.1; default-port 953; }; server localhost { key "rndc-key"; }; Note: I am using WebsitePanel as my hosting panel and is such why it creates the zone enteries the way it does. Although I know I can change this behaviour, I do not wish to do so nor do I believe is the root of the problem. Thanks for your help.
