• Any command line tool checking windows domain password?

  Does Windows provide a command line utility that lets me check a domain user's password? It is sufficient that the utility returns success(0) if I provide a matching domain user name and password. Alternatively, is there a simple VB/JS script that can do this? I'm the Intranet admin of my company and have the default password set for corporate staff, so I'd like to quickly scan which users have not changed their default password. Better yet, are there any books or websites which cover such topics so that I can get more information?

  Hi all There is a simple way to check the integrity of a backup made with Windows Backup in Windows 2008 Server Enterprise (not R2)? Today i tried to restore some files from a backup I made some days ago, and the Windows Backup snap-in reported that the file was unreadable. • Mysql can not resolve hostnames when checking privileges

  I'm going crazy to solve this. I have a mysql installation (on machine db.example.org) which doesn't resolve a given hostname. I gave privileges using hostnames i.e. GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'user'@'host1.example.org' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD 'secret' GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, INDEX ON `my_database`.* TO 'user'@'host1.example.org' However when I try to connect using mysql -u user -p -h db.example.org I obtain ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'user'@'192.168.11.244' (using password: YES) I already checked for correct name resolution in the dns system: $ dig -x 192.168.11.244 ;; ANSWER SECTION: 244.11.168.192.in-addr.arpa. 68900 IN PTR host1.example.org. I've also checked for skip-name-resolve option in mysql variables in fact if I can access from another machine on the same subnet using hostname privileges. The only difference is that host1.example.org and db.example.org point the same ip on the same machine i.e. both db.example.org and host1.example.org have ip 192.168.11.244. In this way all the applications using that database can use the name db.example.org and we can move the data on other hosts (if needed) just by changing the dns record, leaving the application code unchanged. What should I do to solve this or at least to understand what's happening?

  While configuring a new test plan in Atlassian bamboo, I get the following exception in the log: Recording error: Unable to detect changes : <projectname> Caused by: org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection? svn: OPTIONS request failed on <repo-path> I tried to access the svn repository by hand and it worked (URL looks like this: https://myrepo.org/path/to/repo). The svn sits behind an apache http server. Both the bamboo server and the svn server are running Debian 4.0. Has anybody seen this error before and can give me a hint how to fix it?

  I am trying to install the ATLAS BLAS library which recommends that I turn if CPU throttling to do the install. How do I check if my CPU throttling is ON or OFF? I tried the suggestion of Code: ./cpufreq-selector -g performance in the /usr/bin directory as suggested elsewhere in the forum but there was no output and the control returned back to the user. I have searched everywhere but there does not seem to be a way to determine the status of the CPU throttling

• Checking the configuration of two systems to determine changes

  We are standing up a replicant data center at work and need to ensure that the new data center is configured (nearly) identically to the original. The new data center will be differently addressed and named than the original and will have differing user accounts, but all the COTS, patches, and configurations should be the same. We would normally ghost the original servers and install those images onto the new machines, however, we have a few problematic pieces of COTS that require we install them outside of an image due to how they capture the setup of the network during their installation and maintain it within their configuration information (in some cases storing it in various databases). We have tried multiple times and this piece of COTS cannot be captured within a ghost image unless the destination machine will have an identical network setup (all the same IPs, hostnames, user accounts, etc across the entire network) as the original. In truth, it is the setup of these special COTS that I want to audit the most because they are difficult to install and configure in the first place. In light of the fact that we can’t simply ghost, I’m trying to find a reasonable manner to audit the new data center and check to see if it is setup like the original (some sort of system wide configuration audit or integrity check). I’m considering using something like Tripwire for Servers to capture the configuration on the source machines and then run an audit on the destination machines. I understand that it will still show some differences due to the minor config changes, but I’m hoping that it will eliminate the majority of the work. Here are some of the constraints I’m working under: Data center is comprised of multiple Windows and Linux machines of differing versions (about 20 total) I absolutely cannot ghost or snap any other type of image of these machines … at least not in their final configuration I want to audit the final configuration to ensure all of the COTS, patches, configurations, etc are installed and setup properly (as compared to the original data center) I would rather not install any additional tools on these machines … I’d much rather run it from a standalone machine or off a DVD Price of tools is important but not an impossible burden, however, getting a solution soon is important (I can’t take the time to roll my own tools to do this) For the COTS that stores the network information, I don’t know all of the places it stores the network information … so it would be unlikely I could find a way in the near future to adjust its setup after the installation has occurred Anyone have any thoughts or alternate approaches? Can anyone recommend tools that would be usable for system wide configuration audits?

  Hi all, we have CRL that is valid for 24 hours and has a next update in 12 hours. The CRL is valid from 12:12 AM to 12:12 AM and from 12:12 PM to 12:12 PM. In the logs of the CRL hosting webserver we see that one of our servers not always fetches the CRL at night, in most cases the server that missed the CRL IIS servers 403.16 on 12:13 PM. Is our following theory good: when a windows server misses fetching the CRL on it's nextUpdate but the current CRL is still valid, the fetching is not retried? This leads to a situation that when the CRL expires there is no overlap and gives a little time of 403.16 situations in IIS since the CRL is not thrusted and so all certificates are marked als unsafe? greetings, Tim

  I, like most in here, use a password manager for keeping all kinds of login/pass informations inside. And over time, the heap of passwords started to grow, and grow, and now it's on about 350 (give or take) entries. The problem is, most of these have been temporary, for example, for login into forums which I wanted to visit, and never come back again; same with some pages and so on ... and because of that, every now and then I come onto a password that's long gone expired. So I was wondering, is there a utility out there that can check which of these has actually expired by logging in, and logging out ? I know this is a relatively complicated operation (auto filling doesn't always works and so on, how to log out ... etc.) , but still ... maybe someone knows.

• Domain Outlook user is asked for password every time despite checking the 'remember password' button

  We have a windows 2003 domain. All users have roaming profiles. We have a couple of users who, when they log into outlook, are asked for their password every time, despite selecting the 'remember my password' option. Our email is externally hosted exchange email. I've tried several fixes found on google such as deleting 'protect' folder in the user's profile, and deleting protect key in the registry but none work. I tried storing the password in windows' password/credentials manager, didn't work. It happens on any PC the users log into so it's not a machine specific problem. Any ideas? OS is Windows XP pro. Outlook is 2007.

• IMAPSync Migration to Exchange 2010 SP1: Exchange drops connections while checking for existence of folders

  I'm migrating from ZImbra Collaboration Suite to Exchange 2010 SP1. I'm testing IMAPSync as a possible migration tool and have hit a problem with the IMAP server in Exchange 2010. For each account it migrates, IMAPSync loops through the list of folders in the source mailbox and tests for the existence of each one in the destination mailbox. It then goes on to create those folders that do not exist and copy over the messages. It's the intial testing for the existence of the folders that is giving me a problem. The response given by the Exchange server when the folder does not yet exist is given as an error: "R=""16 NO IMAPSyncTest/8 doesn't exist."" After ten of these errors have been issued in succession, the Exchange server appears to stop responding to the IMAP session. Enabling protocol logging for IMAP confirms that the 10th request for a non-existant folder is the last request to be logged on the server. IMAPSync carries on merrily without seeming to realise its connection has gone and thus fails to create any folders. I've logged this with the tool's creator. Does anyone have any idea why Exchange is stopping responding to the connections though? The behaviour looks rather like throttling, although the 'ten strikes and you're out' trigger does not seem to correspond to any of the triggers on the ThrottlingPolicies. Just to check, I've tried creating a new ThrottlingPolicy, turned everything that I think might be relevant up to 11 and applied it to the my test mailbox. • Checking for orphaned snapshots - ESXi5

  So we had some issues with our passive mail node over the weekend doing vmtools updates and to resolve a problem we had to revert to a snapshot and then reseed all the databases across. All in all everything seemed fine, the server works and CCR copy status is running fine. I used the "Delete All" option this morning to remove the snapshot and the process according to vCenter has completed with no errors and no "Needs Consolidation" flag. This all seems fine until I check the Datastore that holds the VM on our SAN and I can clearly see snapshots that are pretty big [see attached image]. These do not seem to be changing size and the data modified is around the time the works were started for the vmtools update. Does this possibly mean that at some stage, possibly during reversion or hard resetting of the VM, that they have become orphaned? Are there any methods to check orphaned status of snapshots? We are running ESXi5.0 Update 1 with storage provide by an EMC SAN. Enterprise plus is the license level.

• Best way to script checking whether a machine is on the corporate network

  I am writing a Powershell script to determine if a machine is on the corporate network. The machine may or may not be on the domain, so I want to check at "IP" level. Have written something to check by pinging a couple of servers on a couple of different subnets (to get around the risk of someone being on another (external) subnet with a host on the same IP.) Works, but it's a bit slow, and not especially "future-proof" - e.g. in 2 years time when I decomission the server it'll break. Is there a way I can use the dns suffix being given by the local dhcp server? Just direct me what I need to check - I can figure out the script. Ta, Ben

  We've recently absorbed a small company who had a Dell PowerEdge server running SBS 2003. For some reason, the hard disks have been wiped. We have the product key though from the sticker on the side of the case but not the installation media: Win SBS Std 2003 1-2 CPU 5-CAL OEM software We do have a Dell labelled set of four CDs labelled SBS 2003 in our store and I've built a VM from this media but it doesn't prompt for the product key during install. Is there any way to ascertain whether this media will work with this product key without going through activation? I know one can activate several times but would prefer to check we've got the right media before doing this. Thanks, Rob.

I have written a script that scans all the relevent logs daily, makes a list of people that have had any activity that day, and maintains database (just a text file) of users and the last time they logged in. Then I have a second script that examines the database for dates more than x days ago, an notifies the user and administrator 2 weeks prior to locking the account. And if there are any dates more than x+y days ago, deletes the account altogether. This seems to be working for me - but I would like to use a non-proprietary solution if one is available.   We are working in a test environment and need to monitor the audio quality of an rtp stream that is being captured using tshark. Right now we are able to capture the audio and access the file through wireshark, but we would like to find a way to save the audio to a .wav file (or similar) via the command line. Does anyone know of a tool that can do this?

• Monit checking URL follow redirects

  I am looking to use monit to keep an eye on my site. I want it to treat it the site like an external user so am testing the url but it doesn't seem to follow redirects. The content check is being performed on the html of the redirect. #request works: if failed url http://www.sharelatex.com/blog/posts/future.html content == "301" #request fails if failed url http://www.sharelatex.com/blog/posts/future.html content == "actual content" Finding out how to get the url check to follow 30X would be great.
