  • sqlcmd won't execute - Claims Native Client not installed properly

    I'm trying to use sqlcmd to execute some SQL scripts. Using a test command with a simple query like: sqlcmd -S HOSTNAME -d MYDATABASE -Q 'SELECT Names FROM Customers' sqlcmd does not appear to make any attempt to connect to the server as it displays this message: Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup. The native client was presumably installed as part of the SQL Server setup and likely correctly. I actually get this message on any machine with SQL server installed trying to use sqlcmd so it's not a matter of the installation being corrupt. Unfortunately the message really tells me nothing about the problem so I don't know what the real issue is. I know the SQL Native client is working properly since a vbscript was able to execute SQL queries against the database. Is there some additional configuration needed to use sqlcmd?

    I have a Synology DS213 with two 600GB drives in RAID 1. Last night the device reported that my second drive had become degraded and that I should replace it. When I ran a extensive S.M.A.R.T. test the results said that the drive is okay. How can I confirm that the drive is actually bad? Is there any case that the degraded drive is the good one and that it is actually the other drive that is bad?

    I have a small confusion about the differences between the 2 types of set ups: When deploying using Add Roles and Features the Wizard requests to choose from one of two Deployment Scenarios: Virtual machine-based desktop deployment : Virtual machine-based desktop deployment allows users to connect to virtual desktop collections that include published RemoteApp programs and virtual desktops. Session-based desktop deployment : Session-based desktop deployment allows users to connect to session collections that include published RemoteApp programs and session-based desktops. Although this seems intuitive now, if I continue with "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment" I later have another two options when creating a collection: Pooled virtual desktop collection Personal virtual desktop collection This is where my confusion lies. What is the differences between a Session-based deployment and Virtual machine-based deployment with Personal virtual desktop collections? I'm mostly finding information pertaining to Windows Server 2008 but I know there are some core improvements in VDI 2012 so would someone please comment on that. Thank you

  • Windows Vista claims wireless key is the wrong length

    A family member of mine is house sitting and has been given the details of their wifi. The access point is an Airport Express, it has WEP encryption (I think) and they've been given a passphrase to use. I know it's a passphrase and not the encrypted key as it's an English word. The passphrase is 10 characters long. The problem is that Vista complains that it's not a valid key as it must be a 5 or 13 character non-hex key or a 10 or 26 character hex key. (From what I've read this suggests the encryption is WEP?) I've found a couple of suggested solutions, but I'm not actually at the house at the moment so I wanted to make sure I have a good chance of getting it to work when I'm there but have no internets to ask. Solution 1: Vista needs to be told explicitly what kind of encryption and key is being used. Specify in the connection settings that you are using WEP and that it is a "shared key". Solution2: Try converting the passphrase to hexadecimal using an ASCII-hex converter and entering that.

  • Mac claims to have connected to wireless network, but hasn't

    I am attempting to connect a new mac OSX 10.6.5 laptop to a wireless network (I am a windows expert but a mac novice). It used to connect without problem to the network when I had the security set to "64 bit wep". Now I have changed the security on my belkin router to "WPA-PSK (no server)". I have two PC's and an old mac connecting via the new security setting without problem. Now I have the problem that on the new mac, the wireless icon is indicating a good connection (5 dark bars). Also the network name has a tick next to it on the wireless drop down menu. But I can not view any websites. I can not even connect to the router by typing 192.168.2.1 into a browser address bar. Any ideas where I went wrong?

  • Google Apps claims my domain is registered but when I try to access it claims it is not

    Hi all, we have registered one of our domains with Google Apps 2 years ago. However, we didn't even use it. Now if I try to access: http://google.com/a/mydomain.com What I see is: Server error Sorry, you've reached a login page for a domain that isn't using Google Apps. Please check the web address and try again. Then I go to Google Apps Standard Edition signup page and type mydomain.com. However, what I get is: This domain has already been registered with Google Apps. Please contact your domain administrator for instructions on using Google Apps with this domain. Is there anyone who can explain me what this inconsistency is caused by and what I can do? Since Google Apps Standard Edition doesn't grant me to contact with Google, I can't even submit a bug report. Any help would be appreciated.

    I have a fairly simple puppet setup, one master and one node, both running Debian Squeeze 6.0.4. I have DNS entries for the two machines, client and master respectively. Both client and master's DNS entries resolve correctly on both machines to the right IPs. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access. Is there a tool that can tell me which program, if any, is disconecting me ?

These steps are missing one very important vital step in order for FBA to work with Active Directory. A supplement to step 3 before granting access in step 5 through the people picker. You need to specify the Active Directory Provider Name to the people picker, otherwise you will not be able specify users through the Policy for Web Application. <PeoplePickerWildcards>       <clear />          <add key="ADMembershipProvider" value="%" />     </PeoplePickerWildcards> Recently we needed to use Forms Based Authentication with Active Directory from an Extranet. This is how we got it to work. 1. Extend the Web Application Instead of tweaking the internal web app, Extend the web application you want to expose to the Extranet, giving it the required host headers etc. 2. Configure SharePoint Central Admin to use FBA for the "new" Web Applications Login to SharePoint Central Admin Go to Application Management / Application Security / Authentication Providers and Change the Web Application to the one which needs to be configured for Forms Based Authentication Click zone / default, change authentication type to forms and enter ActiveDirectoryMemebershipProvider under membership provider name ( for example , "ADMembershipProvider") and save this change 3.   • How to detect UTF-8-based encoded strings [closed]

    A customer of asked us to build him a multi-language based support VB6 scraper, for which we had the need to detect UTF-8 based encoded strings to decode it later for proper displaying in application UI. It's necessary to point out that this need arises based on VB6 limitations to natively support UTF-8 in its controls, contrary to what it happens in .NET where you can tell a control that it should expect UTF-8 encoding. VB6 natively supports ISO 8859-1 and/or Windows-1252 encodings only, for which textboxes, dropdowns, listview controls, others can't be defined to natively support/expect UTF-8 as you can do in .NET considering what we just explained; so we would see weird symbols such as é, è among others, making it a whole mess at the time of displaying. So, next function contains whole UTF-8 encoded punctuation marks and symbols from languages like Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, French and others, based on an excellent UTF-8 based list we got from this link - Ref. http://home.telfort.nl/~t876506/utf8tbl.html Basically, the function compares if each and one of the listed UTF-8 encoded sentences, separated by | (pipe) are found in our passed string making a substring search first. Whether it's not found, it makes an alternative ASCII value based search to get a match. Say, a string like "Societé" (Society in english) would return FALSE through calling isUTF8("Societé") while it would return TRUE when calling isUTF8("SocietÈ") since È is the UTF-8 encoded representation of é. Once you got it TRUE or FALSE, you can decode the string through DecodeUTF8() function for properly displaying it, a function we found somewhere else time ago and also included in this post.     Hello guys... I have seen 2-3 ERPs in action. I am wondering what is better. Desktop based application or webbased displayed on a browser. My first expirience was with a web based ERP when i was 14 years old.. It was web based and terribly slow... For most simple task you had to do lots of clicks... no keyboard support ..... Pages took ages to load. Last year i worked for migrating to a newer computer some old terminal based cobol application. The computer that worked till today and still has no problem was from 1993. The user interface ofcourse was textbased.. The speed that guys placed orders was amazing! just typing the name of the customer , then 5-10 keys to add a product to order.... Comparing to this ERP the page for placing orders Link (click sales orders) seems terribly slow to add a product... No keyboard shortcut works to save what you added and generally i believe you need 4 times more time to place an order compared to the text interface... Having to use both mouse and keyboard for this task is BAD and sadistic... So how can tek heck these people ever use a system like that ??? So in the long run desktop application seems the only way... Ofcourse browsers support shortcuts but the way to overide the defaults that browsers uses isnt cross compatible... That is a hudge problem. Finnaly, if we MUST/forced use cloud in near future what about keyboard shortcuts?? I feel confused... I have seen converters of desktop applications to browser applications but are SLOW as hell... The question is what about user friendliness?What kind of application would you use?

  • Recommendations for a web-based help system

    Hi Experts, I'm putting together a fairly large GUI. I'm a tech person, but more on the hardware side, not software. I'm wondering what software package would be best suited to enable me to generate a web-based help-system. Preferably it takes care of a lot of coding, allowing me to focus on the content. For example, the user would click on a link in the GUI when they have a question, that brings them to a web-based Help Guide, for example, providing an overview of how to use the GUI, perhaps a searchable index (key-word based index), table of contents, etc, for navigating through the Help Guide. My first thought was to program everything in XHTML using Dreamweaver, but my layout requirements are fairly modest (just figures and text, maybe a few equations), and I'd prefer not to spend a lot of time concentrating on the programming. Was wondering if any software existed that made generating web-based navigatable pages easy to create/publish. Again, I'm not really a programmer, so if there's something obvious out there, I'm probably not aware of it. Any advice much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

So in the long run desktop application seems the only way... Of course browsers support shortcuts but the way to overide the defaults that browsers uses isn't cross compatible... That is a huge problem. Finnaly, if we MUST/forced use cloud in near future what about keyboard shortcuts?? I feel confused...   • Predictive firing (in a tile-based game)

    I have a (turn-based) tile-based game, in which you can shoot at entities. You can move around with mouse and keyboard, it's all tile-based, except that bullets move "freely". I've got it all working just fine except that when I move, and the creatures shoot towards the player, they shoot towards the previous tiles.. resulting in ugly looking "miss hits" or lag. I think I need to implement some kind of predictive firing based on the bullet speed and the distance, but I don't quite know how to implement such a thing... Here's a simplified snip of my firing code. class Weapon { public void fire(int x, int y) { ... ... ... Creature owner = getOwner(); Tile targetTile = Zone.getTileAt(x, y); float dist = Vector.distance(owner.getCenterPosition(), targetTile.getCenterPosition()); Bullet b = new Bullet(); b.setPosition(owner.getCenterPosition()); // Take dist into account in the duration to get constant speed regardless of distance float duration = dist / 600f; // Moves the bullet to the centre of the target tile in the given amount of time (in seconds) b.moveTo(targetTile.getCenterPosition(), duration); // This is what I'm after // Vector v = predict the position // b.moveTo(v, duration); Zone.add(bullet); // Now the bullet gets "ticked" and moveTo will be implemented } } Movement of creatures is as simple as setting the position variable.   • Django: Can class-based views accept two forms at a time?

    If I have two forms: class ContactForm(forms.Form): name = forms.CharField() message = forms.CharField(widget=forms.Textarea) class SocialForm(forms.Form): name = forms.CharField() message = forms.CharField(widget=forms.Textarea) and wanted to use a class based view, and send both forms to the template, is that even possible? class TestView(FormView): template_name = 'contact.html' form_class = ContactForm It seems the FormView can only accept one form at a time. In function based view though I can easily send two forms to my template and retrieve the content of both within the request.POST back. variables = {'contact_form':contact_form, 'social_form':social_form } return render(request, 'discussion.html', variables) Is this a limitation of using class based view (generic views)?   • Java(standard, non standard) or Non Java based Web developement [closed]

    I am new to web development. Initially i thought i would be learning LAMP or WAMP to acquire web developement skills but recently i came across Standard Java based (JSP, servlets) and Non standard Java based (GWT). My question is related to if and how LAMP can be compared with Java (standarad or non stadard) technologies. Is LAMP even comparable to Java based tech or it does something else or something more or less ? what requirement for a web developement projects require the choice that which of these 'technologies' should be choosen ?   • Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

    A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please.   • New Silverligh-based Protal for Windows Azure AppFabric Labs

    Wade Wegner introduced a good news about the Windows Azure platform, which is the new Silverlight-based portal for Windows Azure AppFabric Labs had been launched. You can have a look here. As we know the new Silverlight-based portal of Windows Azure had been published on the Nov of last year but the AppFabric part still not changed. (Clicked the AppFabric link will direct to the old portal.) Now the Silverlight-based AppFabric portal is available for Labs.
