  I read about many CSS related languages and tools which need ruby. What is the purpose of these languages and tool how these can save time and improve our CSS coding. What is the role in ruby language in these languages and tool. Will i have to install and learn ruby language to use these languages and tool. will i need ruby installed on webserver where website will be hosted. • A server-side language to Learn

  I'm a graphic designer, with experience in print design. In fact, I'm working on digital prepress since 4 years ago. I'm doing a course on web design right now, although I have been studying it on my own for a while, online. So, my question is, what kind of server-side language do I need to learn? I'm feel comfortable with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, even with preprocessors like SASS and LESS, but server-side scripting becomes a nightmare to me. So, what kind of language is necessary to learn? Any book or resource to that specific language? Thanks a lot for your answers.

• Should CSS be listed on your resume under Languages?

  I have some doubts like Whether CSS should be put under Languages or not? Although Wikipedia says Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language ... But do they write CSS under the languages section of the resume, along with PHP, etc? Similarly what about HTML? I have some doubt and I don't want to sound like someone who is not aware of the trends. Just to give an example, currently I have the following languages,frameworks, technologies, etc. listed under the "Technical Expertise" section of my resume - Technical Expertise * Languages - Proficient - PHP 5, Javascript, HTML ?*,CSS ?*,Sass ?*. Beginner - Linux Bash. * Databases - MySQL 5. * Technologies - AJAX. * Frameworks/Libraries - Symfony, jQuery. * CMSes - Wordpress. Although my domain is Web-development/design, I welcome domain-agnostic answers which can provide some generic ideas/reasoning. I have seen, a lot of people messing up these sections (even more serious than my doubts :) ), putting things under wrong sub-headings and thus putting a big question mark on their understanding of those things. I don't know much about XML, Comet Technology etc. Considering those are included too, What things should be put under Languages? E.g. Should CSS be put under Languages? Please give some reasoning to support your views. Where should the others (XML, Comet, cURL etc. ) be put? I welcome some examples of how you put it. Or do you have an additional Keywords section where you write all the unsortables ? Considering a set of standards like W3C standards, etc. do you have a standards sub-heading? I guess I have put the contents of other sections Okay. But do let me know about your ideas and reasoning. • Core Location in iPhone Simulator 3.2 (iPad)

  So, i'm trying to port my app to iPad. I'm using CoreLocation. Apple says the iPad does have Location: Wi-Fi Digital compass Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model) Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model) so it should be possible to get the position of my ipad (at least with 3g model) about 3km radius would be enought. but it doesnt work in simulator (3.2 ipad) (running 3.1.3 in simulator simulates me cupertino). is there a way to get the position in simulator (3.2 ipad) ? i live in germany and here the ipad isnt released yet, so i cannot test it on my device. thanks!

• How to make my iPhone app compatible with iOS 4?

  Hello, My iphoneos 3.1 based application is not working on iOS 4 GM: the camera is not showing in full screen, it doesn't correctly detects compass information, the uiwebviews doesn't respond to touches (they don't scroll), and so on. It's completely broken! Now my question is: how can I develop an update using the latest xcode with support for ios 4? The latest iOS 4 xcode (3.2.3) doesn't provide any way to develop for iPhoneOS 3.x ("base sdk missing"). By the other side, xcode 3.2.2 would not allow me to debug it on a iOS 4 device, so I can't test it.

• Android interacting with HTML5 tutorial?

  I've been looking at using a WebView to display an HTML5 webpage, where the novel features of the mobile device (GPS, compass, accelerometer, camera, etc) can be fed back into the web page. I was wondering if there were any good tutorials showing these functions interacting with the webview. So far I've found ways for the WebView to send javascript commands to the web page, but those interactions haven't been triggered from outside the web view (such as upon receiving an intent from the GPS or accelerometer). Note: The HTML5 Geolocation API is not what I'm interested in.   Hello, I am trying so write a bit of code that will search for a given point on a map, but in a given arc of a compass bearing. e.g. 45 degress (north-east), 20 degrees either side. So far I have got a SQL command that will give me the results in a given radius, need some help on how to filter it to a direction.   I'm trying to animate a rotation using CATransform3DMakeRotation, but the problem is once the animation is finished, the image goes back to its initial position, i.e back to zero. But I'd like to keep it where it finished rotating. How would I do that? edit What I'm trying to do is to create the same compass which comes with the new iPhone. Basically the locationmanager gives me new headings every few seconds (or several per second). Using the new heading and the timestamp, I was trying to get a smooth animation of the image but not getting anywhere. The only thing which seems to work is applying the transform directly, e.g. compassimage.layer.transform = CATransform3DMakeRotation(newHeading.trueHeading *M_PI/180,0,0,1.0): but that's not animated...

I have a simple MVC application and my view is missing one thing I could really use. I want to select a local file just to retrieve it's filename. I know it's relatively easy to use the form tag helpers for uploading: <%= file_field 'upload', 'datafile' %></p> I wonder how I could get the filename from the selected file, without uploading the file.

For example my base could have a ENUM called Direction with values: None ALL Stop Start I create a new class call Compass which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. North South East West I create a new class call Navigation which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction.   "The first 90% of a project takes 90% of the time and the last 10% takes the another 200%"  (excerpt from onista) Now that I have a working app (more or less), it's time to make it pretty and slick. I can't stress enough how useful it is to get other people using your software, and my simple app is no exception. I handed my iPhone to a couple of my colleagues at Red Gate and asked them to use it and give me feedback. Immediately it became apparent that the delay between the list page being shown and the list being drawn was too long, and everyone who tried the app clicked on the "Recalculate" button before it had finished. Similarly, selecting a transmitter heralded a delay before the compass page appeared with similar consequences. All users expected there to be some sort of feedback/spinny etc. to show them it is actually doing something. In a similar vein although for opposite reasons, clicking the Recalculate button did indeed recalculate the available transmitters and redraw them, but it did this too fast! One or two users commented that they didn't know if it had done anything. All of these issues resulted in similar solutions; implement a waiting spinny. Thankfully, jquery mobile has one built in, primarily used for ajax operations. Not wishing to bore you with the many many iterations I went through trying to get this to work, I'll just give you my solution! (Seriously, I was working on this most evenings for at least a week!) The final solution for the recalculate problem came in the form of the code below. $(document).on("click", ".show-page-loading-msg", function () {            var $this = $(this),                theme = $this.jqmData("theme") ||                        $.mobile.loadingMessageTheme;            $.mobile.showPageLoadingMsg(theme, "recalculating", false);            setTimeout(function ()                           { $.mobile.hidePageLoadingMsg(); }, 2000);            getLocationData();        })        .on("click", ".hide-page-loading-msg", function () {              $.mobile.hidePageLoadingMsg();        }); The spinny is activated by setting the class of a button (for example) to the 'show-page-loading-msg' class. Recalculate This means the code above is fired, calling the showPageLoadingMsg on the document.mobile object. Then, after a 2 second timeout, it calls the hidePageLoadingMsg() function. • localhost/127.0.0.1 not working, "Unable to connect"

  I am running some pretty basic php sites on Snow Leopard. Usually I just go to my browser and type anything like: localhost http://localhost 127.0.0.1 mycomputername.local But suddenly, after installing a gem file (compass) none of this is working. I tried sudo apachectl restart Thinking that I just needed to restart apache, but no luck. • What mobile phones are viable for a "nerdy" person? [closed]

  This community wiki is for determining a list of good mobile phone choices if you are "nerdy" (definition follows.) As a point of reference, the almost two years old N95 8GB will be used. Mostly because that's what I can most relate to since I've had it since it came out. Today, iPhone and other modern mobile phones really out-shine it in usability and interface. However, it still does everything I want it to do (and here's the definition of "nerdy"; modify as needed): Syncs contacts, calendar, tasks and mail in the background Can run multiple installable applications in the background (Google Maps with Latitude, for example) Good amount of space for music etc. Lets you develop your own little toy applications (Python; not to mention it can also run an Apache server with a public URL!) Tethering! Supports Flash (maybe not very important, but it has its uses) Has a manufacturer that believes in the nerdiness! (The people at Nokia Labs make lots of cool stuff and share early versions with the community and are generally open) A high resolution screen (at least 320x240) Special hardware features such as an accelerometer and GPS What's missing from the N95 8GB but still qualifies as good, "nerdy", qualities: 7.2 Mbit/s (or faster) internet through HSDPA or HSPA+. A good web browser that can do most of the stuff a desktop browser can (especially render sites properly and run JavaScript correctly) Touch (especially multi-touch) More special hardware features such as a compass Intuitive and fluent user interface (Shiny stuff) Ability to configure it to trust root certificates of my own choice A processor fast enough to run Quake 3! =)

• Haml Inherit Templates

  I'm using Haml (Haml/Sass 3.0.9 - Classy Cassidy) stand-alone to generate static HTML. I want to create a shared layout template that all my other templates inherit. Layout.haml %html %head %title Test Template %body .Content Content.haml SOMEHOW INHERIT Layout.haml SOMEHOW Change the title of the page "My Content". %p This is my content To produce: Content.html <html> <head> <title>My Content</title> </head> <body> <div class="Content"> <p>This is my content</p> </div> </body> </html> But this doesn't seem possible. I have seen the use of rendering partials when using Haml with Rails but can't find any solution when using Haml stand-alone. Having to put the layout code in all of my templates would be a maintenance nightmare; so my question is how do I avoid doing this? Is there a standard way to solve this problem? Have I missed something fundamental?

• Why won't ruby recognize Haml under ubuntu64 while using jekyll static blog generator?

  I have been trying, quite unsuccessfully, to run henrik's fork of the jekyll static blog generator on Ubuntu 64-bit. I just can't seem to figure this out and I've tried a bunch of different things. Originally I posted this over at stackoverflow, but this is probably the better spot for it.
