• Ubuntu 12.10 TTY console (Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6]) not working

  I've been a Ubuntu user for some time now. I have a very annoying problem, I have no idea what causes it, and I haven't managed to find anything relevant after Googling like crazy. The problem is my TTY consoles are not working. Usually, these are activated using CTRL ALT F[1-6]. It was working when I was using the Nouveau drivers, but after installing the nVidia proprietary drivers, instead of getting a terminal console I get a strange monochrome pattern that slowly fades away. Does anyone know how to get CTRL + ALT + F[1-6] working again?

• How to swap ctrl and fn key on a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Boot Camp?

  There are sooooo many discussion on the internet about swapping the fn and ctrl key on a MacBook Pro. On the Mac side, a new software called ReMap4MacBook does a perfect job swapping the two key. But on the PC side (specifically Windows 7), I can't really find a definitive answer. Most post refer to this article but I read the loooong article and followed the instructions to no avail. I remember there used to be a program (maybe it was on XP) that not only swapped the two keys but it also controlled the fans on the MacBook Pro. But I can't remember the name and I also recall that that program stopped being updated like years ago. EDIT: It's called Input Remapper. So I am hoping there exist a simple program that I can simply run to swap those two keys.

• ctrl + a doesn't work in browsers

  The combination for select all (ctrl+a) doesn't work in a browser (either if we speak about firefox or chromium). It doesn't work if I try to clik in to the adress bar nor if I try to use it to select what I've written in google search bar at google.com. When I press ctrl + a it simply takes the cursor before the first letter. This doesn't happen when I use a text editor software like Libre Office. There the shortcut does what's supposed to do, selecting all the text. What could be the problem?

• Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open Terminal (Compiz related?)

  Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open the Terminal, and I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with Compiz. Compiz disabled the transparency on my launcher (using Ub.12.04LTS+Unity) and so I uninstalled it. But after I uninstalled Compiz, my UI was messed up, so I reinstalled it, now Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open the terminal. System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts has the shortcut to terminal there, but it simply does not work. Any tips on what I could do? Thanks in advance!

One of them is to return a certain error code when Ctrl-C was received. What's the correct way to detect this? But when I'm waiting for data using recv() as I do in the code above, I can't read out-of-band data at the same time. Apart from that, I'm getting something using recv() without that oob-flag.

  I'm running the latest Ubuntu version on my laptop, and every day when I arrive at my office I turn on the laptop and plug everything on. That includes a monitor that happens to be larger than the laptop's monitor. I always do my work on the desktop monitor, so I'd like for the Alt-Tab menu to always pop-up on this one. Instead, it's configured to pop-up whichever monitor the mouse is on (which makes sense, but doesn't work for me). Anybody know a way to change that?

• Update Manager is in Launcher and Alt-Tab list, but I can't switch to it

  The Update Manager recently started itself and found two updates. I can tell by the icon in the launcher. The icon has a (2) on it and a little white arrow saying the application is running. I can also see the update-manager process in a 'ps -A' list. Alt-Tab also shows the Update Manager. The problem is I can't get Update Manager to show up. If I click on the icon or Alt-Tab to it, nothing happens. I've never had any issues starting it manually, but when it starts on it's own after finding an update, I can't switch to it. What can I try to make this work better?

• Mouse buttons and all keyboard buttons except alt and super randomly stops working

  A couple of times lately, unity appears to not accept button presses from neither the mouse or the keyboard. This happens after a random amount of time, usually a couple of hours, or right after boot. The weird thing is: I can still move the mouse around. I can press alt to get the unity menu thingy (but i can't type anything in it) I can press super to show/hide the unity search. None of the applications seem to get the input Ive tried connecting a second mouse, same issue I can press ctrl+alt+f1 to drop to a shell tty The shell works fine Now, this is definitely a bug, probably in unity(?), but it's hard to search for when I don't know what's causing it. Is there something I can do to debug? I've found some people that appears to be having the same problem with the mouse only, but most of the time, their questions are unanswered or closed for being too specific. What would be a good strategy to fix this? Should I report it as a bug?

• OpenOffice Calc doesn't show up in the alt-tab window switcher

  I just upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, and it's mostly working. My biggest problem so far: OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc doesn't show up under the task switcher. When I pres alt-tab to change windows, I can see all my windows except for any OpenOffice documents I have open. If I minimize other windows, then I can get to my Calc documents, but Alt-Tab just doesn't work. It only seems to be a problem with Calc. Writer and Impress both work fine. I do a lot of work in spreadsheets, so this is really messing up my flow. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

• How do I customize Alt+Tab behaviour?

  GOAL: I would like to make the little menu that pops up when I press Alt+Tab to gain the ability to jump to a particular window by pointing my mouse at one of the icons. This is the behaviour that my Mac OSX laptop has. The Situation I use Xfce, with the default windows manager (XFwm). I currently have Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10, although I plan on updating both to XUbuntu 12.04 once the dust settles (probably mid-may?). (Clarification, for my current setup, I installed Ubuntu, then added xfce manually after the fact). So, a series of related questions. How do I set this up? (If this is not possible, please answer the following questions to help me learn) Is the Alt+Tab a function of the desktop environment, or the windows manager, or some other piece? (IE if I switch to using some other tool, could I potentially get this) Are there any customizations that are available either from settings or add-on applications that would allow me to change the behaviour of that menu?

• Alt/Shift key not released after switching keyboard layout

  Sometimes when I switch layout using either Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift the Alt key is not recognized as being released thus if I press e.g. F a File menu opens up. Last time that happend I lost all data I filled into a text form on a webpage because I pressed the Home key while typing and Firefox suddenly went to my home page! Moreoever, it still remains unreleased after hundreds of keypresses like if I'm holding it! Same goes for the Shift key. I would rather file a bug at Launchpad if I could but I have no clue what fucking package name should I type in the ubuntu-bug command! Have anyone else had this issue? Can you suggest a solution or maybe another place to report this bug?

• Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell : can't see nor launch apps except with Alt + F2

  I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell 3.6. Everything worked fine till the moment I've began to customize the main menu (apps wich appears in Dash and so on). I don't know wether I've done something wrong or if there is a bug : suddenly, the Dash became empty. My favourite docks too, except the "Show apps" button. When I activate it, there is only an empty dash, no apps showed. The only way I can access an app is using the "Alt+F2" shortcut. I've tried to restart gnome-shell (Alt-F2 / r) but nothing has changed... A logout and a reboot have not changed ... Do you know how to repair the gnome-shell ? Thanks for your help...

Progress has been great so far - 5x page load performance improvement. However, we're in the top 5 organic search ranking in google for many targeted keywords and phrases. I'm afraid eliminating so many img tags with alt attributes can hurt our SEO. Does anyone have any experience with alt tag manip/removal and effects on SEO positions? Is previous rank "sticky"?

  I've noticed an problem when trying to catch keyboard shortcut: CTRL+an arrow. I've handled keydown event. Now when I hold CTRL key then keydown event is fired once. If I hold an arrow (so that now I'm holding CTRL+an arrow) it doesn't fire another event. Is it forbidden from any reason? I guess I've already encountered this problem in Opera a few years ago and there was an option for it in browser. My results: holding CTRL, press an arrow -- fires event for CTRL and doesn't fire an event for an arrow press CTRL + an arrow at once -- fires one event but only with keycode of CTRL. holding CTRL, press a letter (eg. S) -- works as expected press CTRL + letter (eg. S) -- works as expected (Results are identical in Chrome and Firefox. Is the behaviour described above a standard?) Just a day while working with complex SQL Server code in SSMS I came across very interesting shortcut which I have never used before and instantly fell in love with it. It is totally possible that you are familiar with this but for me it was the first time and I was surprised that I did know know this short cut so far. Shortcut key is CTRL+SHIFT+]. This key can be very useful when dealing with multiple subqueries, CTE or query with multiple parentheses. When exercised this shortcut key it selects T-SQL code between two parentheses. Let us see the examples to understand the same. In each of the examples I have put the cursor at the position displayed and pressed CTRL+SHIFT+] and it has selected the code between two corresponding parentheses. Cursor position 1 Cursor position 2 Cursor position 3 If you are a developer and have to code with complex queries, you will totally appreciate that this feature can save so much of the time for development. I often remember my experience as a developer when I have lost a lot of hours to just balance parentheses. As I said yesterday I found this shortcut accidently. • Best way to hide a window from the Alt-Tab program switcher?

  I've been a .NET developer for several years now and this is still one of those things I don't know how to do properly. It's easy to hide a window from the taskbar via a property in both Windows Forms and WPF, but as far as I can tell, this doesn't guarantee (or necessarily even affect) it being hidden from the Alt-Tab dialog. I've seen invisible windows show up in Alt-Tab, and I'm just wondering what is the best way to guarantee a window will never appear (visible or not) in the Alt-Tab dialog. Update: Please see my posted solution below. I'm not allowed to mark my own answers as the solution, but so far it's the only one that works. Update 2: There's now a proper solution by Franci Penov that looks pretty good, but haven't tried it out myself. Involves some Win32, but avoids the lame creation of off-screen windows.

  Enabling Bias alt-tab sorting to prefer windows on the current viewport as described here made no difference. How can I get back the exact same behavior as 11.04, so that alt-tab only switches between windows on the current workspace? Simply disabling the alt-tab and shift-alt-tab keybindings on the unity switcher seems to have helped, but it still switches workspaces on me sometimes. For example, if I give a terminal window focus then press alt-tab, it switches to another terminal window on any workspace before trying to switch on the same workspace. Also, the Unity switcher still shows up when I alt-tab then hold alt even though I removed its alt-tab keybinding.

• Bind Ctrl+Right to nextword in nano (as it is in all other apps)

  And likewise Ctrl+Left to prevword. I read the man page of nanorc and found bind key function menu So the line bind ^Left prevword main would be what I want, the problem is that nano only accepts an alpha character or the word "Space" so Left doesn't exist. Is there a way to accomplish this? Right now I'm on natty (nano 2.2.2) but I will upgrade nano if a later (devel?) version can do this.

  I use the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut to open a terminal, but I cannot see how I can get it maximized. When I start it manually, I can simply do a gnome-terminal --maximize, but that does not apply for the shortcut. Even a changing of the .desktop files did not change anything. Any way to let the shortcut open a maximized terminal window? I use regular Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 with no compositing effects.

  I can do screencasts by pressing ctrl+alt+shift+r, but I get no sound when I view the videos, I've check my built in mic and headset, they both work on skype and such, I just can't record sound with the gnome built in screencasting.   I am able to map the key combination Right Alt+Left Arrow with <a-left> or by <m-left>. But I am not able to map the Left Alt key. Is there a way to do that? Edit: Just to clarity <a-left> means Alt+Left Arrow. The important question here is what is difference between Left Alt and Right Alt from the perspective of keymappings in Vim?
