  • Installer Reboots at "Detecting hardware" (disks and other hardware) on all recent Server Installs

    I have a very frustrating problem with my PC. I cannot install any recent version of Ubuntu Server (or even Desktop) since 9.04 even using the text-based installer. I boot from a USB stick created by Unetbootin (I also tried other methods such as startup disk creator with no difference). On the Server installer, it gets to "Detecting Hardware" (the second one about disks and all other hardware, not network hardware) and then either hangs at 0% (waited 24 hours), or reboots after a minute or two. My system (late 2007): ASUS P5NSLI motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 2 x 1GB Corsair 667MHz RAM nVidia GeForce 6600 I have unplugged everything (including the only hard disk, CD-ROMs and floppy). I have only one stick of RAM (tried each one to no avail) and am booting the installer from a USB stick (booting from CD-ROM yields the same problem). I also tried several of the boot options (nomodeset, nousb, acpi=off, noapic, i915.modeset=1/0, xforcevesa) in all combinations) to no avail. The only active parts of my system are the video card, mouse, keyboard and USB stick. I have also updated the BIOS to the most recent version. (FWIW, on the Desktop installer, I get a black screen after hitting the Install option.) Even after removing "quiet" I am unable to see what kernel panic is occurring (or not occurring) to cause the install to crash. I am only able to save the debug logs via a simple webserver in the installer.     Hi all, When I install Windows, I like to deploy a set of the same apps (for example, Firefox, Chrome, Trillian, 7-Zip, etc.). I'd prefer to have a way of doing it all in one sitting, and I seem to remember there being a way of bundling all the installers. I was able to find two, though neither of them (Almeza MultiSet, WPIW) look like what I was thinking of. Can anyone recommend other ways of running a whole set of installers at once? Thanks! (Will add links when I get enough points)

    I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 over network unattended. I installed a DHCP server (Dnsmasq), a TFTP server (tftpd-hpa), I got the netboot.tar.gz archive with the pxelinux.0 file, the pxelinux.cfg directory, the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image and I put a preseed file into my web server. Dnsmasq, tftpd-hpa, pxelinux and Apache are all on the same machine. The PCs MB doesn’t support PXE, so I use iPXE and boot it from a CD. The PC gets an IP from the DHCP, then iPXE loads #pxelinux.cfg/default, which I edited like this: timeout 5 prompt 0 default install label install kernel ubuntu-installer/i386/linux append vga=normal locale=en_GB setup/layoutcode=sl_SI console-setup/layoutcode=sl_SI netcfg/choose_interface=auto initrd=ubuntu-installer/i386/initrd.gz netcfg/get_hostname=ubuntux preseed/url=#http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseed.cfg Then it loads the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image. Then I got a question: Detect keyboard layout? I desided to bother with this later. So I answer No, and then twice on Englishjust to get trough and then I get to the error: The installer failed to process the preconfiguration file from #http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseeed.cfg. The file may be corrupt. I created the file myself and copied the d-I commands into it. I also tried to get the preseed.cfg over a web browser and it works fine. So why is the installer failing?

  • ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize drive partitions

    I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion HPE desktop running Windows 7. I am trying to install a dual-boot system with 12.04. However, when I run the LiveCD I only get as far as the "Install" window where you can select the partitions for your drives. On the bottom where it says "device for boot loader installation" I have "/dev/sda" and cannot select any other devices. All the options to change the drives are greyed out, most likely because there are no drives in the window. I partitioned my largest drive using the tools within Windows, then booted into the CD, but nothing shows up. I then used Gparted to change the new space from unallocated to an /ext2, and still nothing shows up. The installer does not recognize anything, but when I go into an Ubuntu session and use the disk utility manager I can see the partitions I made. Anything I do has to be done outside of the installer. I have no files on this new computer, so this is the perfect time to install a parallel OS. I would like avoid completely reinstalling Windows, however. I've been over the forums many times, but all the answers I've found have not worked for me. I also tried flagging the new, empty partition as boot, but that screwed Windows up. Also, the WUBI installer hits the same point and quits. I know that the disk itself is fine because I just made another dual boot system on a Gateway PC. This makes me think something within this computer is preventing the installer from "seeing" the drives. Any help would be much appreciated! Edit in response: The main part of the partitioning window shows no partitions, everything is blank. There is no way to add partitions, and all the buttons are useless. I've tried defragging my drive multiple times, and I also used the same disk to dual-boot another PC with no problems, so it's not the disk, it's definitely the computer.

The old installer was build with Installshield. The feedback to Installshield is: Bad adaptability, bad reuse - thats way we are evaluating "Visual Studio Setup" as an alternative. Other products we consider: Free Solutions WiX NSIS Commercial Solutions Installshield (again..) Wise Advanced Installer sth. missing? Solutions we don't like to consider: Inno Setup (It just doesn't feel right)

  • Custom field not showing in Custom Content Type

    Hi all: I created a custom column in a custom content type in a Sharepoint Web manually (e.g. /MySite/MyWeb). I now want to programmatically copy this content type across to another web (e.g. /MySite/MyWeb2). However, upon looping through the custom content type in code, I could only find 2 fields: Content Type and Title (expected: Title and custom column). The custom column was missing. I'm very sure that the content type and field are added at the web level. The custom content type is inherited from Item. When I loop through the web's fields, I can see the custom column, and that was copied to the new web. It is only within the content type that the custom column is not showing up. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks.

  • MSI Installer start auto-repair when service starts

    I have a WiX based MSI that installs a service and some shortcuts (and lots of other files that don't). The shortcut is created as described in the WiX docs with a registry key under HKCU as the key file. This is an all users install, but to get past ICE38, this registry key has to be under the current user. When the service starts (it runs under the SYSTEM account) it notices that that registry key isn't valid (at least of that user) and runs the install again to "repair". In the Event Log I get MsiInstaller Events 1001 and 1004 showing that "The resource 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MyInstaller\Foo' does not exist." This isn't surprising since the SYSTEM user wouldn't have this key. I turned on system wide MSI logging and the auto-repair created its log file in the C:\Windows\Temp folder rather than a specific user's TEMP folder which seems to imply the current user was SYSTEM (plus the log file shows the "Calling process" to be my service). Is there something I can do to disable the auto-repair functionality? Am I doing something wrong or breaking some MSI rule? Any hints on where to look next?

  • How do I reduce package content on a custom install CD?

    I normally do all my installs via PXE server, but I'm building a custom CD for kvm installs that are not on the same vlan as my PXE server. I would prefer this CD was as small as possible and it fetched packages from the network like netinstall mini.iso CD does, but netinstall doesn't mount /cdrom like the server install CD does. I need the cdrom for preseed. I've got my custom server install CD working, but it is still ~700MB. Trying to modify "dists/lucid/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz" gives me no love as it complains that I've got a corrupt Packages.gz no matter what I do. I'd rather the preseeded mirror was used rather than CD once it gets the cdrom setup. Any ideas?

My budget doesn't stretch to a dedicated server where I can configure everything as I need it. Rather, I am hoping to find somewhere, ideally UK based, that will allow me to install/install for me OrientDB on their server, that is of the normal shared server variety. Is anybody able to point me in a good direction for this please (whilst UK is preferable it is not essential)?

  • Install Ubuntu Netbook Edition with Wubi Installer

    Ubuntu is one of the most popular versions of Linux, and their Netbook Remix edition is especially attractive for netbook owners.  Here we’ll look at how you can easily try out Ubuntu on your netbook without a CD/DVD drive. Netbooks, along with the growing number of thin, full powered laptops, lack a CD/DVD drive.  Installing software isn’t much of a problem since most programs, whether free or for-pay, are available for download.  Operating systems, however, are usually installed from a disk.  You can easily install Windows 7 from a flash drive with our tutorial, but installing Ubuntu from a USB flash drive is more complicated.  However, using Wubi, a Windows installer for Ubuntu, you can easily install it directly on your netbook and even uninstall it with only a few clicks. Getting Started Download and run the Wubi installer for Ubuntu (link below).  In the installer, select the drive you where you wish to install Ubuntu, the size of the installation (this is the amount dedicated to Ubuntu; under 20Gb should be fine), language, username, and desired password.  Also, from the Desktop environment menu, select Ubuntu Netbook to install the netbook edition.  Click Install when your settings are correct. Wubi will automatically download the selected version of Ubuntu and install it on your computer. Windows Firewall may ask if you want to unblock Wubi; select your network and click Allow access. The download will take around an hour on broadband, depending on your internet connection speed.  Once the download is completed, it will automatically install to your computer.  If you’d prefer to have everything downloaded before you start the install, download the ISO of Ubuntu Netbook edition (link below) and save it in the same folder as Wubi. Then, when you run Wubi, select the netbook edition as before and click Install.  Wubi will verify that your download is valid, and will then proceed to install from the downloaded ISO.  This install will only take about 10 minutes. Once the install is finished you will be asked to reboot your computer.  Save anything else you’re working on, and then reboot to finish setting up Ubuntu on your netbook. When your computer reboots, select Ubuntu at the boot screen.  Wubi leaves the default OS as Windows 7, so if you don’t select anything it will boot into Windows 7 after a few seconds. Ubuntu will automatically finish the install when you boot into it the first time.  This took about 12 minutes in our test. When the setup is finished, your netbook will reboot one more time.  Remember again to select Ubuntu at the boot screen.  You’ll then see a second boot screen; press your Enter key to select the default.   Ubuntu only took less than a minute to boot in our test.  When you see the login screen, select your name and enter your password you setup in Wubi.  Now you’re ready to start exploring Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix Ubuntu Netbook Remix offers a simple, full-screen interface to take the best advantage of netbooks’ small screens.  Pre-installed applications are displayed in the application launcher, and are organized by category.  Click once to open an application. The first screen on the application launcher shows your favorite programs.  If you’d like to add another application to the favorites pane, click the plus sign beside its icon. Your files from Windows are still accessible from Ubuntu Netbook Remix.  From the home screen, select Files & Folders on the left menu, and then click the icon that says something like 100GB Filesystem under the Volumes section. Now you’ll be able to see all of your files from Windows.  Your user files such as documents, music, and pictures should be located in Documents and Settings in a folder with your user name. You can also easily install a variety of free applications via the Software Installer. Connecting to the internet is also easy, as Ubuntu Netbook Remix automatically recognized the WiFi adaptor on our test netbook, a Samsung N150.  To connect to a wireless network, click the wireless icon on the top right of the screen and select the network’s name from the list. And, if you’d like to customize your screen, right-click on the application launcher and select Change desktop background. Choose a background picture you’d like. Now you’ll see it through your application launcher.  Nice! Most applications are opened full-screen.  You can close them by clicking the x on the right of the program’s name. You can also switch to other applications from their icons on the top left.  Open the home screen by clicking the Ubuntu logo in the far left. Changing Boot Options By default, Wubi will leave Windows as the default operating system, and will give you 10 seconds at boot to choose to boot into Ubuntu.  To change this, boot into Windows and enter Advanced system settings in your start menu search. In this dialog, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. From this dialog, you can select the default operating system and the time to display list of operating systems.  You can enter a lower number to make the boot screen appear for less time. And if you’d rather make Ubuntu the default operating system, select it from the drop-down list.   Uninstalling Ubuntu Netbook Remix If you decide you don’t want to keep Ubuntu Netbook Remix on your computer, you can uninstall it just like you uninstall any normal application.  Boot your computer into Windows, open Control Panel, click Uninstall a Program, and enter ubuntu in the search box.  Select it, and click Uninstall.
