  • Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Researcher

    - by Yolande
In a new interview titled “Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Research,” Garretón shares her first-hand experience developing with Java and Java 7 for very large-scale integration (VLSI) of computer-aided design (CAD). Garretón gives an insightful overview of how Java is contributing to the parallelism development and to the Electric VLSI Design Systems, an open source VLSI CAD application used as a research platform for new CAD algorithms as well as the research flow for hardware test chips.  Garretón considers that parallelism programming is hard and complex, yet important developments are taking place.  "With the addition of the concurrent package in Java SE 6 and the Fork/Join feature in Java SE 7, developers have a chance to rely more on existing frameworks and dedicate more time to the essence of their parallel algorithms." • Webmaster Tools - URL Parameters Settings Do Not Work

    - by David
Google Webmaster Tools shows problems with duplicate title tags under Optimization - HTML Improvements, for example: ???????? Mitsubishi Electric Mr. Slim PC Series PC-3KAKLT (220V) 30000 BTU > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html > /????-????/mitsubishi-mr-slim-pc3kaklt-30000-btu.html?category_id=96 These two pages have exactly the same content, a rel-canonical tag is set, and they are (no longer) linked to internally. Additionally, we used the Configuration - URL Parameters setting, to set this parameter to No: Doesn't affect page content about one month ago. However, Google is still showing these HTML improvements (and rankings dropped dramatically). What else can we do here? Best, David

  • Week in Geek: New Malware Steals Bitcoin Currency

    - by Asian Angel
This week we learned how to easily change a dual-booting PC’s default OS, “extract audio from any video using VLC, sneak around paywalls, & delay Windows Live Mesh during boot”, shrink videos to fit an Android phone with VLC, fix damaged or broken audio cables, “decide between an ISO or TS folder, help Windows 7 remember folder locations, & convert books for the Kindle”, and more. • Recycle Old Hardware into a Showcase Table

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. You could replicate the design with any sort of old hardware that is interesting to look at: memory modules your company is sending off to be recycled, old digital cameras, mechanisms from peripherals headed for the scrap heap, etc. Hit up the link below to see more photos of the table. • Soda Cans Exploding Under the Stress of High Voltage [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
In an effort to start your Monday off in true Mad Scientist style, we bring you soda cans being decimated by thousands of volts in a “Thumper”. What is a thumper, you ask? During office hours, it’s a high-voltage testing unit most often used to stress test electric cables. In the off hours, however, the electrical engineering geeks over at The Geek Group like to shove anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of volts through unsuspecting objects to see what happens. In this installation they’re shooting high voltage through a variety of soft drink cans with an end result that sounds and looks like a cannon loaded with Mountain Dew. • How to restart RoR services after server has been rebooted

    - by Alan DeLonga
Update I have been searching around to see what services would possibly need to be restarted in my project after reboot. One of them was thinking sphinx, which I finally got to the point where it logs: [Fri Nov 16 19:34:29.820 2012] [29623] accepting connections But I still cant run searchd or searchd --stop because there was no generated sphinx.conf file in the etc/sphinxsearch for more info refer to this open thread on thinking_sphinx after reboot I then turned to looking into restarting unicorn or thin based on some insight I got. The issue is when I check my gems I see one for thin AND unicorn. But when I try to start either one of them they have no file residing in etc/init.d/ where the nginx and sphinxsearch files reside... Would rebooting totally erase the files for an app server like thin or unicorn? We are hosted on Rackspace running ruby 1.9.2p290 rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) nginx/1.1.19 notice that there are gems for unicorn and thin but there is no unicorn.rb or thin.rb in my config folder for my app... I am still super lost if any one can give me some insight on some steps to take to figure this out I would really appreciate it. Anything would help, thanks for reading. thin 1.4.1 unicorn 4.3.1 When I run unicorn I get the same issue as referenced here : > /usr/local/bin/unicorn start /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:610:in `parse_rackup_file': rackup file (start) not readable (ArgumentError) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:76:in `reload' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/configurator.rb:67:in `initialize' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:104:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/http_server.rb:104:in `initialize' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/bin/unicorn:121:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/bin/unicorn:121:in `<top (required)>' from /usr/local/bin/unicorn:19:in `load' from /usr/local/bin/unicorn:19:in `<main>' When I run thin it just opens a command line prompt... /usr/local/bin/thin start >> Using rack adapter Other gems: * LOCAL GEMS * actionmailer (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) actionpack (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activemodel (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activerecord (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activeresource (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) activesupport (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) arel (3.0.2) builder (3.0.0) bundler (1.1.5) carmen (1.0.0.beta2) carmen-rails (1.0.0.beta3) cocaine (0.2.1) coffee-rails (3.2.2) coffee-script (2.2.0) coffee-script-source (1.3.3) daemons (1.1.9) erubis (2.7.0) eventmachine (0.12.10) execjs (1.4.0) faraday (0.8.4) faraday_middleware (0.8.8) foursquare2 (1.8.2) geokit (1.6.5) hashie (1.2.0) hike (1.2.1) httparty (0.8.3) httpauth (0.1) i18n (0.6.0) journey (1.0.4) jquery-rails (2.0.2) json (1.7.4, 1.7.3) jwt (0.1.5) kgio (2.7.4) lastfm (1.8.0) libv8 (3.3.10.4 x86_64-linux) mail (2.4.4) mime-types (1.19, 1.18) minitest (1.6.0) multi_json (1.3.6) multi_xml (0.5.1) multipart-post (1.1.5) mysql2 (0.3.11) oauth2 (0.8.0) paperclip (3.1.1) polyglot (0.3.3) rack (1.4.1) rack-cache (1.2) rack-ssl (1.3.2) rack-test (0.6.1) rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) railties (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) raindrops (0.10.0, 0.9.0) rake (0.9.2.2, 0.8.7) rdoc (3.12, 2.5.8) riddle (1.5.3) sass (3.2.0, 3.1.19) sass-rails (3.2.5) sprockets (2.1.3) sqlite3 (1.3.6) sqlite3-ruby (1.3.3) therubyracer (0.10.2, 0.10.1) thin (1.4.1) thinking-sphinx (2.0.10) thor (0.16.0, 0.15.4, 0.14.6) tilt (1.3.3) treetop (1.4.10) tzinfo (0.3.33) uglifier (1.2.7, 1.2.4) unicorn (4.3.1) xml-simple (1.1.1) I am working on a project that was built by another group. The problem is the app is not running when you go to the address for the site. Then when I put in the ip address of the server it just says "Welcome to Nginx". Any insight as to how to figure out what services need to be restarted and how to go about restarting them would be greatly appreciated. I feel kind of dead in the water at this point... • Stores Still Matter In The World Of E-Commerce

    - by Michael Hylton
You may think that more and more consumers are moving their purchasing to the Web or mobile device.  However, according The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, 15-20 percent of consumers in 2011 checked out products in stores before buying online, or called “showrooming”, for product categories like stand mixers, electric knives, sewing machines, and some floor cleaners. Other categories like power tools, hairsetters, and robotic vacuums are now beginning to show signs of the “showrooming” trend as well. It is doubly important to present a consistent, personalized, and relevant shopping experience for your customers, no matter whether they interact with you in-person in your store, with your sales agents or call center agents, over the Web, or using a mobile device.  Your goal is to make that experience across touchpoints as seamless as possible.

I'm not sure if this is a bad idea and I should run a vanilla MySQl but it seems my current problem is just getting the gem installed. I've seen quite a few of these problems here on stackoverflow but all seem a bit different or have really complicated solutions. Is there something I'm missing? Something simple? Something stupid? I can provide additional info from the out file if necessary. I've read that some people use SQLite for dev and test then MySQL in prod but that sounds like a pretty horrible idea.

  • Spotlight on an office – Utrecht

About 35km south-east of Schiphol Airport and centrally located in the Netherlands, Oracle moved into the Facet building in March 2011. Facet is much more than an office building, it creates a work environment that relates to the ‘No Limits’ philosophy Oracle has in the Netherlands. “No Limits” means the building belongs to everyone. You choose the best place to work, based on the activities of that moment. To point this out, we currently have 1050 people working for Oracle Netherlands, and 623 workplaces. There is virtually no limit to where you can sit in our shiny new offices; we no longer have 'zoning', where departments own specific areas in the building, Even the Managing Director of Oracle Netherlands, does not have an office and he chooses a different working place every day. So make sure you are prepared when he is sitting next to you one day! If nobody has a fixed workplace, then you would think that finding a colleague could be tricky. Oracle uses CU (‘SeeYou’) which makes all of us easier to locate. Upon entering the building you receive a text stating where the greatest concentration of your buddies is sitting. Our internal messaging service also proves to be very valuable finding your colleagues. The heart of our building is the great RestOrant, with a very busy coffee bar. It offers an informal place for people to meet and is busy all day, not just at lunch time! The O-Bar in the atrium on the ground floor is also a very popular place to meet and drink tea or coffee and gives a breathtaking introduction to the office to any of our first time visitors. For a few minutes of relaxation during the working day, there are table tennis facilities and a Wii room on every floor! So if you are interested in joining Oracle in this Netherlands or anywhere else in EMEA, please have a look at http://campus.oracle.com for all of our latest vacancies and internships.

  • Using HAML with custom filters

    - by Guard
Hi everybody. I feel quite excited about HAML and CoffeeScript and am working on tutorial showing how to use them in non-Rails environment. So, haml has easy to use command-line utility haml input.haml output.html. And, what is great, there exist a project (one of many forks: https://github.com/aussiegeek/coffee-haml-filter) aimed at providing custom filter that converts CoffeeScript into JS inside of HAML files. Unfortunately (or am I missing something?) haml doesn't allow specifying custom filters on the command line or with some configuration file. I (not being a Ruby fan or even knowing it enough) managed to solve it (based on some clever suggestion somewhere on SO) with this helper script: haml.rb require 'rubygems' require 'active_support/core_ext/object/blank' require 'haml' require 'haml/filters/coffee' template = ARGV.length > 0 ? File.read(ARGV.shift) : STDIN.read haml_engine = Haml::Engine.new(template) file = ARGV.length > 0 ? File.open(ARGV.shift, 'w') : STDOUT file.write(haml_engine.render) file.close Which is quite straightforward, except of requires in the beginning. Now, the questions are: 1) should I really use it, or is there another way to have on-demand HAML to HTML compilation with custom filters? 2) What about HAML watch mode? It's great and convenient. I can, of course, create a polling script in python that will watch the directory changes and call this .rb script, but it looks like a dirty solution.

  • My partial is not where rails expects it to be (nested partials)

    - by new2ruby
    I have a model Submissions which has many Performers. I have a partial for showing an individual submissions (app/views/submissions/_submission.html.erb): <div> Show stuff relating to @submission ... <%= render @performers %> </div> and a partial for showing performers (app/views/performers/_performer.html.erb): <%= div_for performer do %> <%= performer.name %> <% end %> This works fine from (app/views/submissions/show.html.erb): <%= render @submission %> But I want to use this from a different namespace too (app/views/curator/submissions/show.html.erb). But I get this error: Missing partial curator/submissions/submission with {:locale=>[:en], :formats=>[:html], :handlers=>[:erb, :builder, :coffee]}. Searched in: * "/Users/ircmullaney/RubyCode/cif/app/views" * "/Users/ircmullaney/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194@rails3tutorial2ndEd/gems/devise-2.1.2/app/views" I can fix this by changing the render to this: <%= render 'submissions/submission' %> But, then the nested partial fails: Missing partial curator/performers/performer with {:locale=>[:en], :formats=>[:html], :handlers=>[:erb, :builder, :coffee]}. Searched in: * "/Users/ircmullaney/RubyCode/cif/app/views" * "/Users/ircmullaney/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194@rails3tutorial2ndEd/gems/devise-2.1.2/app/views" This doesn't work: <%= render 'performers/performer' %> because of the div_for: undefined method `model_name' for NilClass:Class Any ideas how I should do this?

  • What is the most challenging part of a project like MyLifeBits

    - by kennyzx
I have made a small utility to keep track of my daily expenses, and my coffee consumption (I always want to quit coffee but never succeed), and of course, this kind of utility is quite simple, just involving an xml file and a few hundred lines of code to manipulate the file. Then I find this project MyLifeBits, it is very intesting, but I think it should require a lot of effort to achieve its goal- that is, to record everything about a person that can be digitally record. So I wonder, it is possible to write an advanced version of my own utility - but a tiny version of MyLifeBits, that can capture: Every webpage I've read, no matter what browser I am using, just download its contents for offline reading, Auto archive emails/documents/notes that I edited, Auto archive Codes that I run/written. Well, these are basically what I do on my PC. And the captured records can be searched easily. My question is, What do you think is the most challenging part? Interoperating with Visual Studio/Office/Lotes Notes/Web browsers is one thing, Database is another thing given that "everything" is record, Advanced programming patterns since it is not a "toy project"? And others that I have overlooked but can be very difficult to handle?

  • Installing a bundle for TextMate

    - by m73
I've downloaded the 30 day trial version of TextMate and wanted to use a plugin for coffeescript. The instructions for installing the plugin say to go to this directory cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/TextMate/Bundles (Textmate 1) Once I changed into the TextMate directory and started looking for Bundles by doing ls it only showed TextMate.pid In other words, no Bundles directory.... Once I was in the Bundles directory, I'm supposed to do git clone git://github.com/jashkenas/coffee-script-tmbundle CoffeeScriptBundle.tmbundle but didn't want to try that without first being in the Bundles directory.

  • Data Execution Prevention in Windows Live Messenger

    - by Andrija
I keep getting "Data Execution Prevention" error in Windows Live Messenger. I have noticed that this is happening usually when I leave computer to get coffee, and screensaver comes up, WLM breaks. Is there any way to prevent this error from happening? I see I can turn off this "Data Execution Prevention", but is that safe, since I know that WLM is under heavy attacks from spammers/hackers? Thanks

  • Problem connecting to SSH in office network

    - by Jeune
I have trouble connecting via SSH to a server whenever I am in the office. I get as far as being prompted for my password and then after that there's a long wait which always ends in a Write failed: Broken pipe This is only for connecting via SSH. I use svn to commit files to a repository hosted on the same server and there are no hitches. Furthermore, this only happens in our office. When I go the university or whenever I am at home or at the coffee shop I am able to connect seamlessly. There are no firewalls in our office. It's just a basic wireless router connected to a modem setup. It's the same setup I have at home and I guess the same setup in the coffee shop. What are the causes for a broken pipe and why does this phenomenon only happen when I try connect via SSH and not when I work with svn on the same server? I didn't do anything but that's because there is no one in the office but me! Having said that, is it possible that it has something to do with the number of sessions an SSH server can handle? UPDATE 2011-14-07: I try to login via SSH through Putty on another machine running windows together with my current SSH session in Ubuntu and now it seems my SSH session in Ubuntu has been dropped. I can't type into the terminal. Is Putty the culprit now?

  • How much bandwidth do I really need (to stream video)?

    - by BCS
I'm looking to get an internet connection for my place (I have been using work, school and coffee shops) and I'm wondering how much bandwidth I really need to do different kinds of things? Google turns up lots of stuff but more than 1/2 are for servers and none of the rest give a "To do A you need X Mb" list.

  • Reputable web based ssh client?

    - by Doug T.
I'm sitting at a coffee shop right now, and I suspected I'd be able to ssh somewhere. Unlucky me they seem to be blocking everything but web traffic. I googled "web based ssh clients" however I have reservations about entering my login credentials on any Joe Schmoe's web app. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any reputable web based ssh clients? If so could you please point me at one that I could trust?
