• Use open-source programs in your company?

  Is there any cons of making your employees use open-source programs in your company? I am planning to start a bussiness and I wonder why companies usually work with proprietary software, as Microsoft Word to quote the most famous one. Why do not they use Open Office (or Libre Office) etc.? From my point of view, you can save a lot of money and help the open-source community by, for instance, giving them part of your benefits in form of donations. I do not know any (medium-big) company that does this. Probably you could give me some examples, just to prove that this model of open-source usage/collaboration works rocks.

• Programming methodologies at stackoverflow

  I am in the middle of starting up a software company where we would use ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET WebAPI extensively at shop. We will be a group of 4 and no more than 10 will work on any particular project at any point in time(these are ground rules). I would like to know, what programming methodologies best suit a small(guerilla) team. Specifically, I would also like to know which ones are being used at famous ASP.NET MVC shops like Stackoverflow. The ones I know are: Scrum and Waterfall(I know its bad). But what's the recommended way of development for smaller, group of 9-10 team. Also, will Test Driven Development help such a team in producing quality software? Are there any other techniques the team will have to know to be good at producing quality software?

  I'd like to have your opinion on the difficulty of the following interview question: Find the subarray with maximum sum in an array of integers in O(n) time. This trivial sounding problem was made famous by Jon Bentley in his Programming Pearls where he uses it to demonstrate algorithm design techniques. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the FizzBuzz (or HoppityHop) test and 10 being implement the C stdlib function malloc(), how would you rank the above problem? I think the people who can best answer this question are those who have read Programming Pearls and have tried to solve this problem on their own.   We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? • Encryption Password help!

  Ok so let me summarize this up. I encrypted my Home to protect against hackers of course when I first installed Ubuntu. It loaded up the Terminal and was attempting to show me my encryption password incase it ever needed to be used. So I thought "Ehh what the heck, I can find it out later..." So I closed Terminal and went on with the (amazing!) Ubuntu life. But now I am having to install Java JDK 7.0.0.4 onto my computer to ya know, play games and such. But it is asking for my password for the encrypted Home folder but it never gave it to me... HELP!!! Does anyone remember the command for Terminal to give you you're randomly generated Encryption password pop up on the famous purple window? Please give legitimate answer and fast please!

• Ubuntu and surround sound

  I'm trying to connect my Logitech x.530 to my Dell studio 1558 and get 5.1 sound. I have 3 jacks and in Windows I automatically could switch between line in adn mic. Which means I could get 5.1 surround over these 3 jacks. Ubuntu does not realise that one of the three jacks should be switched to give sound to the center and LFE speaker. I tried all the tips in the forums, but nothing works. I can only select 4.0 sound in pulse audio. As the dell and the IDT 92hd89e chip for the sound are probably famous laptops I thought there must be someone who has similar issues in the 5.1 sound. I would like to stay at Linux but without this hardware support it's almost impossible.

• Does C# have (direct) flex/yacc port? Or what lexer/parser people use for C#?

  I might be wrong, but it looks like that there's no direct flex/bison (lex/yacc) port for C#/.NET so far. For LALR parser, I found GPPG/GPLEX, and for LL parser, there is the famous ANTLR. But, I want to reuse my flex/bison grammar as much as possible. Is there any direct port of flex/bison for C#? What lexer/parser people normally use for C#? Is there any reason for that choice?
