• How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable.   My school requires a proxy for all internet access. If you want to use the internet, it is impossible to not use a proxy. This makes it a problem for many programs that don't seem to let you enter proxy settings. How can I use Steam when I am behind a proxy? Is it possible to somehow enter the details into a configuration file, or force it to get the settings from Internet Explorer? If not, does software exist for creating a 'virtual' network adapter which will pass all traffic (or all protocol x traffic) through the proxy? Although I am facing this specific problem on Windows 7, solutions for all operating systems are welcome.

  I have a multi-boot Windows 7 (32bit & 64 bit) on my HP Notebook. Unfortunately, the Notebook screen has been trashed (due to daughter dropping it). So I have attached a second screen. On the 64 bit system, after windows has started, the logon screen comes up on the 2nd monitor just fine. On the 32 bit system, the logon screen still comes up on the Notebook monitor and I have to open the lid, and shut it so that it then switches to the attached screen. In both cases the display has been set to only display on the attached screen (ie if I "identify" the attached screen says: '1'). Is there any setting I can use to force the OS to use the attached screen? TIA, Paolo

  Hi, I am accessing an intranet site built by amateurs, that was constructed to be "best viewed by IE" (arghhh!). The site is in portuguese. All accented letters are jammed and do not appear as they should. As I create sites myself, I know that the best way to build a site in portuguese and other latin languages is to use the "charset=iso-8859-1" on the page's HTML encoding. This will ensure cross-browser and platforms compatibility. But I have no way to change this, because I am a visitor on this site. I don't know the encoding they are using. What I ask is: is there a way I can force my browser (Chrome or Firefox) to recode the page using the correct charset? I need this to work on Ubuntu.

After I type in my username and password, I get redirected to https://www.myweb.com/phpmyadmin. The problem is that I don't want anyone to submit their username and password unencrypted via http. How do I force people to login via the https version even if they typed in the http version?

  I have VPN access using OpenVPN and try to create a safe machine that does not leak traffic over non-VPN interfaces. Using the firewall UFW I try to achieve the following: Allow Access from LAN to the machine's web-interface Otherwise only allow Traffic on tun0 (OpenVPN-Tunnel interface when established) Reject (or forward?) any traffic over other interfaces Currently I am using the following rules (sudo ufw status): To Action From -- ------ ---- 192.168.42.11 9999/tcp ALLOW Anywhere # allow web-interface Anywhere on tun0 ALLOW Anywhere # out only thru tun0 Anywhere ALLOW OUT Anywhere on tun0 # in only thru tun0 My problem is that the machine is initially not able to establish the OpenVPN-connection since only tun0 is allowed, which is not yet established (chicken-egg-problem) How do I allow creating the OpenVPN connection and from this point onward force every single packet to go thru the VPN-tunnel?

I have a 60Mbps but the speed is never above 300Kbps when I browse Internet or download something. Even from Microsoft or Apple (the fastest server I found).   While testing to send multiple emails, I successfully sent about 100 emails (with a 20KB pdf attachment), to the same email-address (my own), and they were all received. But on next attempt, my cPanel account was blocked, due to a "brute force attempt". Are there any special precautions I need to take when sending bulk emails? I simply looped through below code without pause for each email. • Access - Force Form Refresh on New Record

  Let me set the stage here a bit: I have an Access project with various buttons, triggers, macros, etc. I needed an Appointment Date field to only show when the button APPOINTMENT MADE is toggled ON. This works great. The problem arises when you submit a form with the APPOINTMENT MADE toggled. Once the record is inserted, the Access file clears all fields, but leaves the Appointment Date enabled, when it should be disabled by default. I have tried the Current, Load, Before Insert, After Insert and many other options on the FORM properties. Am I missing a simple way to force a refresh so the field goes back to it's default DISABLED? Thanks in advance!

• Force a Windows 7 user to change password when it has expired

  Is it possible to force users (on Windows 7 PCs) to change their password once it has expired? Currently our users get notifications that their passwords will expire in 7, 3, 2 and 1 days but once the password has expired they are still able to log into their machines with the expired password. Most of our users ignore the warnings and don't change their password until we tell them they have to (when they ring Help Desk asking why their email and intranet isn't working). From memory, Windows XP machines would show a message at login that the password had expired and then offer the change password screen. Is it possible to do the same thing under Win7? Similar to how if you set a user's account to "must change password at next login" it gives the change password screen automatically.

  i have acer al1702w lcd monitor in my office.. somehow i restarted the system using the reset button as the os stoped responding.. since then the 1440x900 resolution option in the display settings is not appearing.. the intel graphocs is 82945G... and as always the h/w guys at the office are of no help.. they start blurting out their theories that this the best resolution... even though i show them that the max resolution for the monitor is indeed 1440x900.. and its not that the 82945g cant handle it... as it was working before.. i installed the latest drivers for this graphics but still im not finding that option... how to force 1440x900 resolution... oh tes the os ix xp pro sp2 Thanks..

• Force Firefox 14 to free memory when opening/closing lots of popups

  I'm currently trying to run some tests on a web application using Selenium IDE with Firefox 14. The tests mainly consist in loading a page containing thousands of links and clicking on every of those links. Of course, each time a popup shows, I tell Selenium to close it and proceed with the remaining links. However, it seems that even if I close the popups, Firefox is not freeing memory. Usually, I end up with Firefox crashing after opening 1500 popups (around 2.5Gb of memory usage). Is there any way to force the browser to free memory? Maybe something I should set in about:config? Or is there a flaw with Selenium? Thanks.

  We have mission-critical Windows 7 workstations on our network that must be available to any user at any time, even when it has been locked by a prior user. Thus, we have fast user switching enabled. Unfortunately, it's not unusual for us to have a dozen or more different users logged onto the same machine at the same time, with a corresponding degradation in service. We've done our best at educating the masses to log off at the end of their shift. But users being users, this does not happen on a consistent basis. Does anyone know of a clean way to force logoff idle users after a certain amount of time has elapsed? I am open to any method that could be deployed/configured via script, GPO, or SCCM.

  The NTP documentation says: Under ordinariy conditions, ntpd adjusts the clock in small steps so that the timescale is effectively continuous and without discontinuities - http://doc.ntp.org/4.1.0/ntpd.htm However, this is not at all what I have noticed in practice. If I manually change the system time backwards or forwards 5 or 10 seconds then start ntpd, I notice that it adjusts the clock in one shot.   I'm migrating a web system that now works on windows server 2003 IIS 6, to IIS 7.5 on windows 2008 server This system generates javascript files with accented characters in ANSI (Portuguese - Brazil). These javascripts shows for example alert messages. In IIS 6 I have no problem with that, but now using IIS 7.5 if those files are not in UTF-8, the accented characters do not appear correctly.   Context: I'm automatically installing postgresql-9.1 on an Ubuntu server with apt-get. This creates the required postgres user. The Postgres data is on an external volume that survives reinstalls. This data is obviously owned by the postgres user. The problem I'm having is that the ownership is not recorded under the name postgres, but under the UID that postgres had at creation time. When the server is reinstalled, postgres sometimes gets a different UID, and no longer owns the data directory, and thus does not work. Question: Can I force the UID of the user postgres created by apt-get to something fixed? Or is there another way to solve my problem? (As you may have deduced, this is on Amazon EC2 with the data on an EBS volume)

Is there a way I can force SFC to scan again and make the new fixes on reboot? Probably by deleting some file or something?   Is there a way to force Windows to pre-load certain EXE/DLL binaries into its prefetch/superfetch cache as if they had been executed? I have a particular application that loads pretty slowly on first run but if it's "warm" (recently executed) it starts pretty quickly. I'd like to prime the cache early in the background before the application is needed. But since it shows a UI, I'm looking for a way to do this silently. So simply launching the application it isn't ideal. Thanks you in advance. Prompted by David's suggestion in the comments, I wrote a PowerShell script to memory map the files, seek to the end, and close them. I haven't done any controlled tests yet and it could just be my imagination, but Sublime Text (the application in question) appeared to load much more quickly this time around and I haven't used it for several hours.

  I have a word document containing images and tables. These have captions which are numbered, like "Image 1-Example of something". Later on I decided to rearrange some of chapters of my document. However numbering of objects remained the same, so the first image is image 8, the second is image 3, etc. I want to force Word to recompute image numbering so first image in document would be image 1, the second - image 2, etc. Is that possible? Will references (added through cross reference feature) to those objects be updated?
