  • Hyper-V causes boot loop/failure on a non-Gigabyte Win8 Pro system

    Hardware: Intel i7 2600K (not overclocked, SLAT compatible, virt. features enabled in bios) Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (Z68) 16Gb RAM 256Gb SSD Other non-trivial working parts Adding Hyper-V is causing a boot loop resulting in an attempt at automatic repair by Windows 8 after the second or third loop: I'm trying to get the Windows Phone 8 SDK installed and I've narrowed down my troubles to the Hyper-V feature in Win8. This is required to run the WP8 emulator and there are no install options to omit this feature. My first attempt completely borked the OS as I did not have a recent restore point or system image, so I did a completely clean install and made plenty of backups/restore points. I skipped the SDK install and went straight for the windows feature add-on for Hyper-V. This confirmed that Hyper-V is the issue as the same behavior resulted. I cannot find any hint in the Event Logs. Cancelling automatic recovery causes the same behavior to repeat. I don't have any other VM products installed. My only recourse is to use a restore point, try something else, install it again, and see what happens. No luck so far. I'm on my 10th attempt here. Any help would be much appreciated. I've tried setting 'CPUID Limit' to disabled. This seems to work partly as Win8 boots but no USB devices work at all. I also attempted disabling the usb 3.0 controller as the msdn topic lists an issue with USB controllers on Gigabyte boards. This also doesn't work. The USB devices light up but no input is received by the OS. All of my other bios CPU settings are in line with the info in the post. I'm totally stumped. I want to know if it is possible to install Hyper-V lumped on two or more servers, so that the Virtual Machines can use the underlying resources pool of both the servers? And also if that same is possible for an “n” number of servers, instead of just 2 servers.

  • Prioritize One Network Share Over Another And/Or Cap Network Share Traffic? (Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise)

    One of my fileservers is a hyper v VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The NIC in the VM maps to a 1 GB NIC on the host that is dedicated just to this VM. I have two shares on the file server. One is very important and used by a few users. The other is less important but used by many users. The issue I'm having: When a ton of users are accessing the unimportant share, it can choke out requests to the important share. What I'd like to do: I'd like to some prioritize requests for for file on the more important share, or even dedicate a portion of the NIC's bandwidth just to requests for files on that share. Is there any way to do that? Alternately, can I add another NIC and specify that all traffic to one share goes over one NIC and traffic to the other share goes over the other?

  • Hyper-V Server 2012 - "No Active Network Adapter Found"

    I just installed Hyper-V Server 2012 and first thing I get when logging in to the host is "No Active Network Adapter Found". I know I have to use the following command: pnputil –i –a <inf file> I found the Realtek Network Driver for my MB for Windows 7 here: http://za.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A97_PRO/#download But there is not one for Windows 8 so I tried using the Win 7 one with PnPUtil, and I got: Failed to install the driver on any of the devices on the system: No more data is available. Does this really mean I can't use Hyper-V Server 2012 with my motherboard? This is hard to believe because I installed Windows Server 2012 directly (prior to installing Hyper-V Server 2012) on this same computer and I had internet access on that server without even configuring any drivers. Ok so I went to PowerShell from cmd and typed Get-NetIPConfiguration And it said the name of my driver (Realtek) and "Disconnected". I switched the Ethernet wire from my primary computer with my server and everything was fixed. Interestingly, my primary computer connects to the internet just fine with the wire that was previously in the server, just with much slower speed. Does anyone know what could be the difference between these 2 Ethernet wires?

  • Hyper-V VM's cannot access Host resources, and vice-versa

    I have several Hyper-V vm's running on this Win2008 R2 Server box, and up until a reboot of the host server, all the VM's were able to access shared folders on the host. Now, they can't even ping the host server. From what I've seen, I need to setup an Internal only network through Virtual Network Manager in Hyper-V. I set this up, then tried to enable the Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol option in this Internal Only NIC, but I get popups saying: Your current selection will also disable the following features: Microsoft virtual network switch protocol Which is absolutely stupid, considering the protocol is what I'm ticking the checkbox to Enable! As of now, on the host, I have 2 NICs: Physical - This NIC on the host machine does have the MVNS protocol enabled Virtual Network Adapter - Created through Hyper-V Virtual Network Manager as an External type of network. Trying to enable MVNS on this NIC also produces the error above. I've tried enabling Client for Microsoft Networks on the physical NIC for IPv6, but everytime I do that, all the VMs lose Internet connectivity and I cannot RDP into them. Anything else I can try?

  • Unable to run VMs on hyper-v

    Folks/Mates, I need some advise and assistance regarding the testing of Hyper-V. Here is my h/ware configuration: 1) Intel i5 processor (i5-750) 2) Intel M/B DP55WB 3) 6 GB DDR3 RAM OS = Server 2008 R2 Standart (evaluation copy). I installed 2008 r2 on my machine and added hyper-v role to it. I created 2 VMs and installed OS. But after finishing the OS installation the VMs are not booting up. After finishing the OS installation, the VM reboots automatically (normal behaviour) and shows "preparing your system for first time" after that it reboots and didn't come online. Few things to notice, when I am running "securable" on my server 2008 R2 OS it shows that processor is not supporting h/ware virtulization, but (since my desktop is dual boot) when I am running "securable" on my windows 7 OS, it shows that process "does" supports hardware virtulization. VT option is already enabled in BIOS. Any help and suggestions are highly appreciated :) Thanks in advance. Pradeep Rawat

    I have a single physical host, running 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, all fully updated. On that host I am running 3 clients, a DC, a web server and a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. All are running on Windows Server 2008 R2, again all fully patched. Generally all is fine, but sometimes and not repeatably, when I shutdown the host properly, which suspends the Clients, when it all comes up again, SQL Server is no longer running and the IIS App Pool I am running the website in needs to be told which account to run in again! Any ideas!?

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 - Installing Virtual Switch Fails with Error 2916

    So I've been attempting to teach myself SCVMM 2012 and Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, and I seem to have hit a snag. I've connected my Hyper-V Host to SCVMM 2012 successfully, and created a logical network, logical switch, and uplink port profile (which I essentially blew through with the default settings). However when I attempt to create a virtual switch on my Hyper-V host, I run into an issue. The job will use my logical network settings I created to configure the virtual switch, but when it tries to apply it to the host, it stalls and eventually fails with the following error: Error (2916) VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent vmhost1.test.loc was lost. WinRM: URL: [h**p://vmhost1.test.loc:5985], Verb: [GET], Resource: [h**p://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/virtualization/v2/Msvm_ConcreteJob?InstanceID=2F401A71-14A2-4636-9B3E-10C0EE942D33] Unknown error (0x80338126) Recommended Action Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTP/HTTPS traffic. Ensure that VMM server is able to communicate with econ-hyperv2.econ.loc over WinRM by successfully running the following command: winrm id –r:vmhost1.test.loc This problem can also be caused by a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service crash. If the server is running Windows Server 2008 R2, ensure that KB 982293 (h**p://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293) is installed on it. If the error persists, restart vmhost1.test.loc and then try the operation again. Refer to h**p://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details. I must have got one of the first downloads of the Developer Edition and it was nice and fast. I've just downloaded Standard Edition and it's still nearly as fast. Nice. I'm guessing they aren't using GUIDs for the clustered indexes this time! ;)

  • The Case of the Missing Date/Time Stamp: Reporting Services 2008 R2 Snapshots

    This week I stumbled upon an undocumented “feature” in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services as I was preparing a demonstration on how to set up and use report snapshots. If you’re familiar with the main changes in this latest release of Reporting Services, you probably already know that Report Manager got a facelift this time around. Although this facelift was generally a good thing, one of the casualties – in my opinion – is the loss of the snapshot label that served two purposes… First, it flagged the report as a snapshot. Second, it let you know when that snapshot was created. As part of my standard operating procedure when demonstrating report snapshots, I point out this label, so I was rather taken aback when I didn’t see it in the demonstration I was preparing. It sort of upset my routine, and I’m rather partial to my routines. I thought perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right place and changed Report Manager from Tile View to Detail View, but no – that label was still missing. In the grand scheme of life, it’s not an earth-shattering change, but you’ll have to look at the Modified Date in Details View to know when the snapshot was run. Or hope that the report developer included a textbox to show the execution time in the report. (Hint: this is a good time to add this to your list of report development best practices, whether a report gets set up as a report snapshot or not!) A snapshot from the past In case you don’t remember how a snapshot appeared in Report Manager back in the old days (of SQL Server 2008 and earlier), here’s an image I snagged from my Reporting Services 2008 Step by Step manuscript: A snapshot in the present A report server running in SharePoint integrated mode had no such label. There you had to rely on the Report Modified date-time stamp to know the snapshot execution time. So I guess all platforms are now consistent. Here’s a screenshot of Report Manager in the 2008 R2 version. One of these is a snapshot and the rest execute on demand. Can you tell which is the snapshot? Consider descriptions as an alternative So my report snapshot demonstration has one less step, and I’ll need to edit the Denali version of the Step by Step book. Things are simpler this way, but I sure wish we had an easier way to identify the execution methods of the reports. Consider using the description field to alert users that the report is a snapshot. It might save you a few questions about why the data isn’t up-to-date if the users know that something changed in the source of the report. Notice that the full description doesn’t display in Tile View, so keep it short and sweet or instruct users to open Details View to see the entire description.

  • Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

    I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system.     Hi Folks, I have an interessting issue here. Sometimes when I manually reboot some of my guest OS (W2K3 / W2K8) on my Hyper-V 2008 R2 Cluster it does not reboot, it just shuts down. When I'm talking about a manual reboot, I mean connecting with RPD to the virtual server and use the shutdown funktion in the OS itself. I than have to start the virtual machine again via SCVMM / Hyper-V manager and it works just fine. There is nothing special in the eventlog of the host or guest OS. There is also nothing special logged in SCVMM. The guest OS all have the integration tools installed. Any hints? Thanks in Advance

  • Hyper-V 2012 and P2000 SAS SAN

    Hi I am having major problems setting up a Hyper-V 2012 cluster on a P2000 SAS SAN. Running System Center VMM 2012 SP1 I am unable to see any storage to create my cluster. Has anyone had experienced anything similar? Under fabric and storage I can't add the P2000, all I can do is use storage spaces in server manager to create a storage pool and virtual disk. This allows me to create a file share which I can add to VMM but I still can't see any disk to create a cluster. I am just about at the point where I want to tear my hair out wipe the servers and stick VMware on them because I know it works as I have set several systems up like this in the past. The Hyper-V servers can see the storage and in server manager on my management machine it seems to know both servers can see the same disk. VMM is running on the same machine and it can't see any disk. Help..... Thanks Mike

    I've read a few similar questions but wasn't clear. I have a small office (13) users and recently purchased a new single server (this is all I have to work with for now). Server specs Memory - 16GB Drives - 6 SCSI (2TB) PROCESSOR - DUAL QUAD I plan on making the Hyper-V host the DC and then 2 VMs, one for a file server and the other an application server. Question - since I am restricted to this single server, would it be a big issue making the Hyper-V host the domain controller? Your input greatly appreciated.

We would like to install 2 VM with role domain controller w2k (the domain is different from the domain of the hyper-v cluster). Do you know if there are any restriction on doing it? Some collegues say that we risk data corruption if we do live migrations. Others speak about the fact that Microsoft don't support w2k any more. And others have doubts because the global catalog server installed on these DC could have loss of performance. Any idea? Thanks Tony
