  • MySQL is killing the server IO.

    I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached.     I am looking into Javascript programming without a browser. I want to run scripts from the Linux or Mac OS X command line, much like we run any other scripting language (ruby, php, perl, python...) $ javascript my_javascript_code.js I looked into spider monkey (Mozilla) and v8 (Google), but both of these appear to be embedded. Is anyone using Javascript as a scripting language to be executed from the command line? If anyone is curious why I am looking into this, I've been poking around node.js

  • Can I ensure all tests contain an assertion in test/unit?

    With test/unit, and minitest, is it possible to fail any test that doesn't contain an assertion, or would monkey-patching be required (for example, checking if the assertion count increased after each test was executed)? Background: I shouldn't write unit tests without assertions - at a minimum, I should use assert_nothing_raised if I'm smoke testing to indicate that I'm smoke testing. Usually I write tests that fail first, but I'm writing some regression tests. Alternatively, I could supply an incorrect expected value to see if the test is comparing the expected and actual value.

    In asynchronous environments, threading.local is not guaranteed to be context-local anymore, because several contexts may coexist within a single thread. Most asynchronous frameworks (gevent, eventlet) provide a get_current_context() functionality to identify the current context. Some offer a way to monkey-patch threading.local so it is local to 'greenthreads' or other framework-specific contexts. I cannot find such a functionality in the twisted documentation. How do I do this?

  • Will adding extra RAM in my computer speed it up?

    I have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer which is slowly grinding to a halt. Someone told me if i put extra RAM in itll speed it up. Inside the computer there are four slots for memory but only two has memory in them and they are 1GB each. if i bought another 2no. 1GB and put them in the free slots would it speed the computer up (would it be twice as fast?) and is it as simple as just putting them in or is there other things i need to do?

  • DRY way of calling a method in every rails model

    Along the same lines as this question, I want to call acts_as_reportable inside every model so I can do one-off manual reports in the console in my dev environment (with a dump of the production data). What's the best way to do this? Putting acts_as_reportable if ENV['RAILS_ENV'] == "development" in every model is getting tedious and isn't very DRY at all. Everyone says monkey patching is the devil, but a mixin seems overkill. Thanks!

    How does one go about publishing different subsets (or "views") of a single collection on the server as multiple collections on the client? Here is some pseudo-code to help illustrate my question: items collection on the server Assume that I have an items collection on the server with millions of records. Let's also assume that: 50 records have the enabled property set to true, and; 100 records have the processed property set to true. All others are set to false. items: { "_id": "uniqueid1", "title": "item #1", "enabled": false, "processed": false }, { "_id": "uniqueid2", "title": "item #2", "enabled": false, "processed": true }, ... { "_id": "uniqueid458734958", "title": "item #458734958", "enabled": true, "processed": true } Server code Let's publish two "views" of the same server collection. One will send down a cursor with 50 records, and the other will send down a cursor with 100 records. But even the busiest casual players sometimes like to spend a whole sunday afternoon playing a video game. Just stopping them after two hours would be really frustrating. It also creates a pressure to use the daily progress limit every day, because otherwise the player would feel like wasting something. This pressure would be detrimental for casual gamers. What else could be done to level the playing field between those players who play 40+ hours a week and those who can't play more than 10?

    I am new to Farseer Physics and using version 3.3.1. I am after some help and would even be happy to receive Box2d answers just to ensure I get a response as I should then be able to convert it! -- Thanks ...After a lot of tinkering around I have managed to produce a thin vertical rectangle shape on the screen and I wish this to swing back and forth pinned at the top up to an angle I set (90 degrees would be fine for this sample). When it is approaching the top I wish it to slow down, then fall back the way it just came, increase speed then obviously slow to a stop at the top again. Almost how a swinging pirate ship would work at a theme park.   • Is full partition encryption the only sure way to make Ubuntu safe from external access?

    (By "external access", I mean eg. via a Live CD, or another OS on the same dual-boot machine) A friend wants to try Ubuntu. He's fed up with Vista grinding to a crawl (the kids? :), so he likes the "potential" security offered by Ubuntu, but because the computer will be multi-booting Ubuntu (primary) and 2 Vistas (one for him, if he ever needs it again, and the other one for the kids to screw up (again). However, he is concerned about any non-Ubuntu access to the Ubuntu partitions (and also to his Vista partition)... I believe TrueCrypt will do the job for his Vista, but I'd like to know what the best encryption system for Ubuntu is... If TrueCrypt works for Ubuntu, it may be the best option for him, as it would be the same look and feel for both. Ubuntu will be installed with 3 partitions; 1) root 2) home 3) swap.. Will Ubuntu's boot loader clash with TrueCrypt's encrypted partition? PS.. Is encryption a suitable solution?

  • getting window screenshot windows API

    Hi, I am trying to make a program to work on top of an existing GUI to annotate it and provide extra calculations and statistical information. I want to do this using image recognition, as I have learned a fair amount about this in University using Matlab and similar things. I can get a handle to the window I want to perform image recognition on, but I don't know how to turn that handle into an image of that window, and all its visible child windows. I suppose I am looking for something like the screenshot function, but restricted to a single window. How would I go about doing this? I suppose I'd need something like a .bmp to mess about with. Also, it would have to be efficient enough that I could call it several times a second without my PC grinding to a halt. Hopefully this isn't an obvious question, I typed some things into google but didn't get anything related.

    Hey stackers, I’ve been grinding my head on this for a while… My goal is to return all dates that fall between a start and end date and have a certain period as a factor, from the start date. (hard to explain) For example… Start Date: Nov 20, 1987; End Date: Jan 01, 1988; Period: 10 days; I want these dates: Nov 20, 1987; Nov 30, 1987; Dec 10, 1987; Dec 20, 1987; Dec 30, 1987; I already have a date table with all dates from 1900 to 2099. The period could be by days, months or years. Any ideas? Let me know if you need more info.

    Visual studio is a pretty awesome IDE, but sometimes you just wish it would go faster. I was wondering if people have any tips or tricks to help speed up visual studio in day to day use. Things that I'm particularly interested in are speeding up build times and switching aspx files from source to design view seem to bring it to a grinding halt. Having said that, I'd be keen to hear anything that anyone uses to make VS run that little bit faster. Edit: Merged answers from related question, covering VS2008SP1. Please include any optimisations specific to the latest IDE.

  • Does anyone have an updated version of the SQLite .NET assembly, ie. SQLite 3.6.23.1 + possibly .NET

    I'm at my wits end with the best .NET assembly version of SQLite, the one found at http://sqlite.phxsoftware.com. The only maintainer doesn't seem to have the time to update the library and it generally takes months, if not more, for newer versions to surface. Luckily, he has published the source code, so I'm hoping that someone else has made his/her own copy of it, and made the changes, and would be willing to share a copy. I've seen comments on the forums for the library to this effect, but sadly even the forum software seems to be grinding to a halt these days as password reminder emails seems to be lost to the big void, so I can't ask the few there that has said they have done it. So I'm here, hopefully the big userbase of StackOverflow can help. What I'm looking for: Updated with the latest changes to SQLite, ie. SQLite version 3.6.23.1 Possibly built for .NET 4.0 (I can do that if I can get a copy of working source) Does anyone have, or know of anyone, that has done this?

    Hi, I rather foolishly undertook to install a control panel on a Linode. I opted to use CentOs 5.5 (either ordinary or 64 bit) but I am like a monkey playing a reward game... I have some idea of what I am doing, but not enough.... In certain areas I am hopeless....do I install Webmin/virtualmin, or ISP Config..... ISP Config 2 or 3? I would employ someone to help, but how do i find the right person? Where can i learn the ropes on all this? There seems to be no systematic training, and even when I try to research college courses in the UK, I am none the wiser as to where I could go to learn how to run a Linux server..... Has anyone any pointers? Right now I am looking at th esecurity aspects of the server.....rkhunter , denyhosts etc... Any advice on installing and maintaining these things? Cheers marcus

  • Increasing System Menu Font Size for OS X Lion

    My father-in-law recently picked up an iMac (with OS X 10.7 - Lion) and loves it. However, his eyesight isn't that great and would like to find a way to increase the font size of the system menu bar like he could on his old Windows system. I've been unable to find anything in the system configuration that might work. I've heard that the TinkerTool might be able to do it, but I'm a little hesitant to monkey around with his system - I don't want to introduce system stability issues. Question: Has anyone been able to find any good way to increase the system menu font size?

  • ifconfig return "unknown interface: no such device"

    I'm trying to install a Linux driver for my wireless network card (D-Link DWL-G510) on my Red Hat Linux 7.1 machine with a 2.4.37.9 kernel. I downloaded the serial monkey driver from the sourceforge site and was able to successfully compile the rt73 module and load it into the kernel. The problem now is that everytime I issue the command ifconfig wlan0 up it keeps returning with the following error message: wlan0: unknown interface: No such device. I'm at a loss as to what to do here. I specifed wlan0 as the alias for the rt73 module in the modules.conf and also tried to load the driver with the command modprobe rt73 ifname=wlan0 (this specifies the interface name according to the instructions packaged in the driver), but the error message still keeps coming up. Is there something else I need to do in Linux to configure the wlan0 part or is the module not recognizing the wireless network card? It would be quite strange if it is the later since all information from the Internet is indicating this is the linux driver I should be using for mentioned wireless card.

I am having issues getting google-chrome browser into full KIOSK MODE with no browser bar on a linux platform Looking through the google forums I have found numerous postings on how to get Chrome to show full kiosk mode BUT tried to execute with --kiosk but doesnt seem to get the job done. I dont know if this is platform specific or not, but any useful information would help. I know F11 will display the browser in full kiosk mode, with no browser bar BUT is there a way to do this with a linux script and no need for a monkey pressing F11??
