  • WiX/Windows Installer: Re-install to a new folder

I am using WiX for creating installer and would like to implement the following behaviour: If a user launches msi installer for the product and the product already installed, then wizard works similar to pure (first time) installation with exception of some things (e.g. license aggrement screen is omitted). The wizard should allow for example to change installation folder, select whether to place desktop shortcut,... I tried to do: <Publish Event="ReinstallMode" Value="amus"><![CDATA[INSTALL_MODE = "Change"]]></Publish> <Publish Event="Reinstall" Value="ALL"><![CDATA[INSTALL_MODE = "Change"]]></Publish> But after installation completes: the product is in the same folder, where it was installed first time; desktop icon in the same state as it was after first time install. MSDN says: "Do not attempt to change the target directory path if some components that use the path are already installed for the current user or for a different user". Is there a way to re-install in another forlder and add/remove desktop icon in re-install? 2. Is this normal to use the same KeyPath for some components? For example the same registry values for DeskTop and Programs menu shortcuts? MSDN says: "Two components cannot share the same key path value". But compiling and verifying goes OK. And I did not discover problems using the same keypaths.

  • Visual Studio creating bin/ folder in wrong location.

    In Visual Studio 2008, I have a solution with a number of projects. Each project has the same build output path of "..\bin\Debug\" for debug, and "..\bin\Release\" for release. So the directory structure looks like this: solution\ bin\ project1\ project2\ project3\ This all works fine, all the assemblies go to the correct location when I build the project, etc. Howevever, when I first open the solution in Visual Studio, an empty bin folder is created one level up from where it should. So I am getting: bin\ solution\ bin\ project1\ project2\ project3\ This folder is only created when I first open the solution. Never when I build. I have looked through the .sln and every .csproj file, and I cannot work out why this folder is being created. So, my questions are: a) Why is this bin folder being created? b) How do I stop Visual Studio from creating this bin folder?

    Hello. I have a folder on a server which is shared with guest access enabled. I want to be able to copy a file from that folder to a local machine with Applescript. So far I have: property source : "server:sharedfolder:file.ext" property destination : "Macintosh HD:Users:User:Documents:Folder" tell application "Finder" copy file "source" to folder "destination" end tell Which I think should work. But I get the error :Can't set folder source to destination number 10006. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • &lsquo;Publish&hellip;&rsquo; Resulting in Directory With No Files

    I was pulling my hair out with this one…  Which isn’t good considering I have so little of it left!  I had just upgraded to the Windows Azure 1.7 SDK the day before with no problems, and used the upgraded ‘Publish…’ dialog to successfully publish a website to my hard disk for hosting on an internal development server.  However, when trying to deploy another project to my file system, it said it was successful, but there were no files in the directory.  The only difference, the first project was an Azure project, the second was a standard ASP.Net Web Application.  If you installed the Windows Azure 1.7 SDK, you may want to read this. The Problem At first it appears that there is no problem: However you may remember that when publishing a web application, the output window will generally iterate through each of the directories as it copies the files from that directory over.  Sure enough, when looking at the output directory – there are no files, no bin directory, no nothing… Troubleshooting Since one site published and the other did not, I believed that the failure may have been to a failed SQL Server 2012 installation that happened between publish.  I rolled back the installation, however that did not work either.  I also checked the Configuration Manager dialog, and ensured that the projects were selected to actually build (just checking, even though the output said it built them..)  I checked the properties of the solution and the projects, and a selection of files in the project to make sure that they were selected for content…  Nothing seemed to work. I then decided to uninstall the Azure 1.7 SDK to see if that was the culprit.  When I opened the Windows 7 ‘Uninstall a Program’ dialog, I noticed that the Azure SDK came with 2 extra packages that just so happen to be in a Release Candidate state from Microsoft – ‘Microsoft Web Deploy 3.0’ and ‘Microsoft Web Publish – Visual Studio 2010’.  It dawned on me that the publish dialog must not be just for Azure, since it appeared when I tried to deploy the regular web application as well.  Therefore, it must have been an upgrade to the publish mechanism in Visual Studio.  I uninstalled both of the programs and received my old publish dialog once again, and was able to successfully publish the solution above as I had done before. After celebrating solving the problem, I tried reinstalling the Azure package, to see if it would repair the publishing process. Even though it brought back the updated dialogs, it did not publish any files. Instead of uninstalling and retreating, I now KNEW what the cause was, and these were packages not just for Azure. I now knew a product name to search for. The Solution Sure enough, with the correct search term in Google – ‘microsoft web publish no files’, and setting the timeline to 1 week, I found what I needed - Microsoft Connect - Publish Web Application FAILS! (by Andrew Rits). I am surprised that I missed something that ended up being so simple…  In the Configuration Manager, I had the following settings: This is how I had been building and debugging the solution always…  However, apparently when installing the new Web Publishing package, it does things a little differently in its configuration for publishing: You see the difference?  The configuration here is set to ‘x86’ instead of ‘Any CPU’.  Sure enough, as soon as I switched the configuration to ‘Release – Any CPU’, the deployment built and published all of my files as I expected. Conclusion It was a small change, but apparently the new ‘Publish web application’ defaults to the x86 configuration, thereby not copying any of the project/bin files to the publish target directory.  I spent forever trying things, but this small drop down eluded me until I was able to target that the dialog was actually working apparently, I just didn’t have the correct configuration. I hope that this saves you the hours of frustration and hastened hair loss that it caused me…  I also hope that before Microsoft brings this publishing package out of RC status, that they change the behavior of that menu to default to the settings of the old publish menu for the first time.     I'm trying to set up a folder in my home directory that will be shared with another user but for some reason it is not working this is what I've done, I have tried two different ways using ACL's and chown/chgrp etc I set up a group called say: sharedgroup and added both my user (john) and fred to it so when I run groups john john wheel sharedgroup groups fred sharedgroup fred mkdir /home/john/shared vim /home/john/shared/hello.txt (typed in some text saved it) chown -R :sharedgroup shared chmod -R o=-rwx shared ll drwxrwx--- 2 john sharedgroup 4096 Sep 9 21:14 shared ll shared -rw-rw-r-- 1 john sharedgroup 7 Sep 9 21:14 hello.txt (I also tried adding in the s permissions but that didn't help either) then when I log out of the server and log back in as fred and try these commands they fail vim /home/john/shared/hello.txt (won't allow me to write opens a blank file) cd /home/john/shared -bash: cd: /home/john/cis: Permission Denied ls /home/john/shared -ls: /home/john/shared: Permission Denied ls -lad /home/john/shared -ls: /home/john/shared: Permission Denied id fred uid=500(fred) gid=502(sharedgroup) groups=502(sharedgroup),500(fred) context=user_u:system_r:unconfined_t Any idea what I'm doing wrong??

  • Folder redirection save times are awful slow

    I recently set up folder redirection for Documents on Server 2008, but it's painfully slow at the moment. My users are all using Visual Studio 2010, and a save takes 20-30 seconds (whereas it used to take 2 seconds locally). I understand this is because they are being saved to the server, and that takes time (though I did think it would be faster over a gigabit link, with servers on the same network). I enabled offline files on the share, set the option to All files or folders, and enabled Optimize for performance. I thought that this would pull all the files down locally (which I think it did), allow local editing of said files, synchronizing them quietly in the background from time to time (which it does not do - saves right to the share). Is there any way I can speed this process up a bit? Any other tweaks I can do?

  • Windows folder has readonly attribute that cannot be removed

    I have a zip file containing Eclipse workspace. When I unzip it all the extracted folders have read only attribute set to true. When I uncheck "read only" in properties dialog and click apply the attribute seems to be removed. But when I reopen properties dialog it is there again. Eclipse will not accept folder that is read only as a workspace. I need it to be removed. Some points I'd like to make: Only folders have read only attribute, files don't. I use Windows 7, for unzipping I have used 7zip. I have tryied to remove the attribute from command line like this: attrib -r -s c:\pathToFolder. It did not work.

  • Create a folder shortcut/redirection in Vista

    Given a plain old directory of files in Windows Vista, say "C:\OldFolder\", is it possible to move the contents of that directory to a new location, perhaps "F:\NewFolder\" and keep a shortcut-like 'virtual' folder at C:\OldFolder that will always redirect access to the updated location. Shortcuts work for users accessing through the GUI to some extent, but all application links to the old location won't work anymore even with a shortcut. For example, If MS Word tried to access C:\OldFolder\document.doc I would want Windows to simply rewrite it's request to F:\NewFolder\document.doc... I guess I'm basically looking for Apache's Mod_Rewrite for Windows Vista... any suggestions?

    I'm not familiar with server-side scripting, but I'm currently using a PHP application on Media Temple to cache JPEGs from four webcams hosted on a server located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. (Hence my reason for caching them in the US.) The webcams are updated every five minutes. The PHP application stores the cached images in http://static.rigic.co/cache/. I would like to create a cron script to automatically delete the contents of "cache" (not the folder itself; just the files inside) at a regular interval.

    Hi. I like the little top panel thing in Ubuntu. I have links to all my most used programs on there. (Which is why I don't see the point of docky or any of those things: they seem to do the same job, but they're messier). What I'd like is to have a little icon for my documents folder up there too. But I don't seem to be able to do it. It's not one of the options listed when you go to "add to panel...". Am I missing something ridiculously easy?

Both are connected to the same wireless network, both have access to internet but I can't have access between them... I have used open path in the file explorer and nothing... I shut down the firewall on mi laptop but still I can't access..   • How do I use VS2010 One-Click Publish (MsDeploy) to deploy remotely from the command line?

    On the remote web server I have installed the remote service http://x.x.x.x/MsDeployAgentService. If I use the Web Application Project's Publish command in VS2010 I can successfully publish to this remote web server and update a specific IIS website. What I want to do now is execute this capability from the command line. I am guessing it is two steps. First build the web application project using the relevant build configuration: msbuild "C:\MyApplication\MyWebApplication.csproj" /T:Package /P:Configuration=Release Then issue the MsDeploy command to have it publish/sync with the remove IIS server: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:package="C:\MyApplication\obj\Release\Package\MyWebApplication.zip" -dest:contentPath="My Production Website", computerName=http://x.x.x.x/MsDeployAgentService, username=adminuser,password=adminpassword Unfortunately I get an the error: Error: (10/05/2010 3:52:02 PM) An error occurred when the request was processed on the remote computer. Error: Source (sitemanifest) and destination (contentPath) are not compatible for the given operation. Error count: 1. I have tried a number of different combinations for destination provider but no joy :( Has anyone managed to replicate VS2010 Web Application Project "One Click" Publish from the command line?

    the following situations: i have two pc's. My work desktop with XP and logged on in domain mywork.com. This desktop also has two network card. one for logging on the mywork.com domain and using the intranet etc. this desktop also has a network card with access to a switch. the other pc is a windows 7 pc. with is logged in to workgroup domain and also access the switch. now i want to access a shared folder from XP with my 7. but this is not possible because XP is in a different domain. 7 is asked for a user and password but i can't fill in my "mywork.com" login. how can i solve this?

    I created a folder in a TFS Project under workspace "CPortalWS". I deleted the workspace, but now I would like to delete the folder in the project and the delete option is not available. I've tried to create a new workspace mapped to the project but I still don't get the option to delete. Is this a bug in TFS? How can I delete the folder? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Real-time offline folder-to-folder backup application needed (Windows)

    I recently started using Intel Matrix Storage RAID solution that allowed me to use my 5 1TB drives for two RAID volumes. First one a 1TB RAID 0 striped across all 5 drives and second one a RAID 5 across the rest of the free space on all drives (around 2.85TB usable space). The RAID 0 I use for OS, applications and games while the RAID 5 I use as a more-permanent type storage (photos, etc). Now I do realize that running the OS and applications on RAID 0 across 5 drives is very dangerous, which is what brings up the following question. Is there a reliable freeware realtime backup application that can backup a set of folders from one drive to another drive (no online backups needed)? I've already tried a few (Mozy, Yadis, Comodo Backup, GFI Backup, Idoo, Crash Plan) but none meet my requirements: Low CPU and RAM usage. Realtime Backups - as soon as a file is modified in the source folder, it is added to the backup queue which will be processed with the lowest priority when the CPU is idle. This backup queue should persist in cases of computer restarts (ie: the source and destination folders should always have the same set of files, except for the ones waiting in the backup queue). Incremental Backups - if only 10 bytes changed in a 1GB file, the app should only copy those 10 new bytes. Ability to back up locked and opened files (some apps, like Yadis, can't back up critical files like browser favorites). Ability to run as a service (no need for any user to log-in to have the app started). Optional requirements: Compression of the destination into a well-known format (RAR, Zip) that can be directly read without the use of the application. Preset source folders (such as Browser Favorites, Game Saves, Application Settings, etc). The idea is to use RAID 0 array as "semi-persistent RAM-like" storage which in case of a failure can be quickly rebuilt by reinstalling the OS, apps and games and copying over the settings, saves, favorites from the RAID 5. I'm also thinking of taking this RAID 0 as RAM idea to the extreme with SSDs (as soon as we get some nice 6Gb/s SATA III SSDs out there), where a couple of SSDs chained in RAID 0 will work as yet another semi-persistent cache layer sitting between the RAM and the HD. I'm just hoping there already exists an application that satisfies these requirements... otherwise I'll have to write one myself, which I would prefer not to do.

I believe there's a simple command I could enter in a terminal for recursively changing folder permissions for global access; I just don't know what it is.

    If I create a shortcut to a folder and drag the shortcut onto the start menu, then the shortcut on the start menu behaves just like any other shortcut - click it to open the folder in explorer. However, if I drag the folder onto the start menu, then it expands in-situ. If I then copy this shortcut(?) into another location on my machine and compare it to other files/folders, its type appears as "Folder" as opposed to "File Folder" (which is what I get when I choose File-New-Folder. What's the difference between these two types of folder? Can I create one of these folders without dragging onto the start menu? Thanks

Most UPK users are familiar with the UPK Player and the various document outputs that have been available as publishing formats for some time now. In addition UPK provides the content developer the ability to publish content for use in specific environments, LMS, Test Director are two examples. UPK 3.6.1 adds the Presentation publishing type. The Presentation publishing type produces a slideshow presentation of screenshots and text of each topic as a separate Microsoft PowerPoint file. To publish to the presentation option just select the type under the documents category in the publishing wizard. Give this new publishing type a try and let us know what you think by posting a comment. The Presentation publishing type feature came from a customer request and given the ever growing methods and channels for communication we'd like to know what other output types or methods of using existing outputs you would like to see in a future release of UPK.

  • Remove the Lock Icon from a Folder in Windows 7

    If you’ve been playing around with folder sharing or security options, then you might have ended up with an unsightly lock icon on a folder. We’ll show you how to get rid of that icon without over-sharing it. The lock icon in Windows 7 indicates that the file or folder can only be accessed by you, and not any other user on your computer. If this is desired, then the lock icon is a good way to ensure that those settings are in place. If this isn’t your intention, then it’s an eyesore. To remove the lock icon, we have to change the security settings on the folder to allow the Users group to, at the very least, read from the folder. Right-click on the folder with the lock icon and select Properties. Switch to the Security tab, and then press the Edit… button. A list of groups and users that have access to the folder appears. Missing from the list will be the “Users” group. Click the Add… button. The next window is a bit confusing, but all you need to do is enter “Users” into the text field near the bottom of the window. Click the Check Names button. “Users” will change to the location of the Users group on your particular computer. In our case, this is PHOENIX\Users (PHOENIX is the name of our test machine). Click OK. The Users group should now appear in the list of Groups and Users with access to the folder. You can modify the specific permissions that the Users group has if you’d like – at the minimum, it must have Read access. Click OK. Keep clicking OK until you’re back at the Explorer window. You should now see that the lock icon is gone from your folder! It may be a small aesthetic nuance, but having that one folder stick out in a group of other folders is needlessly distracting. Fortunately, the fix is quick and easy, and does not compromise the security of the folder!
