• Core i7 on linux loses its multithreading capability after suspend

  On my debian-linux system, with a core i7 920 , each time I resume after the command "pm-suspend" (suspend to RAM), mutlithreading capabilities almost disappear. More specifically, two distinct programs can use 2 distinct cores at full rate, but a single program is limited to only one core (for one instance of a multithreaded program as well as multiple instances of a monothreaded program, e.g. "make -j 4" for gcc). So I end up rebooting the system. Any help appreciated!

• How do I prevent infinite recursion in X11 start-up process?

  I wasn't able to run X11 or Terminal after rebooting my Mac. After digging around, I got them to work when I commented-out this line in my .cshrc: xset b off It appears that xset will attempt to launch X11 if it isn't running already, and since X11 will launch the default shell through xterm and thus encounter the xset line above, we will have an infinite loop. I would like to keep the above line in my .cshrc. Is there a way to prevent X11 from launching itself?

• HP Envy screen brightness .. stuck

  once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

• Is DHCP required on a Win2003 secondary DNS server?

  We have a secondary DNS server and we've been noticing that the DNS.exe process is getting rather large. (Like, rebooting the server large) I read something somewhere that 2k3 has two relevant memory leak issues, one is the DNS (supposedly fixed in 2007), and another for DHCP. DHCP is running on this server, but I don't see why. Hence my question. Is the DHCP service required for (secondary) DNS to function? Server has: 24 cores (X5650), 8GB RAM

• How can I unlock a folder locked by ‘System’ process on Windows Server 2008?

  I'm on Windows Server 2008 64-bit. LockHunter identifies that a folder is locked by the "System" process. I'm not sure why this happens, but my bigger concern is how to unlock it. I'm looking for a solution that can be run from the command line. LockHunter itself is unable to unlock it. Also, Sysinternals' Process Explorer doesn't find the locked folder's handle. Rebooting is not an option either.

• Volume Shadow Copy not starting

  Hi We are running a Windows 2008 Small Business Server with Symantec Backup Exec. Last night the back up failed due to the Volume Shadow Copy service being unable to start. When I try to manually start it I get the following error "windows could not start the volume shadow copy on local computer" Has anybody any suggestions other than rebooting the server? many thanks Graham

• Configuring HP Proliant iLO using hponcfg

  I am configuring an iLO using hponcfg by logging into the machine remotely and running hponcfg with scripts Mod_Directory.xml and then with Mod_Network.xml. I am enabling the DHCP on the device. But after the above scripts are executed successfully and upon rebooting the iLO, it shows the IP address to be 0.0.0.0. What is missing here, so that the iLO gets an IP from DHCP automatically after configuration?

• I disconnected my cellphone while transferring files to its Mini SD card. Now the files aren't there

  I use Ubuntu 9.10, and the MiniSD card shows as having the space used as if there were files. Baobab (the disk usage analyzer) shows that the card only has 118 MB used (of the 401 Ubuntu claims there are). Of course, I already tried the obvious (rebooting the phone, adding and removing files, etc.), but I don't want to format my card, because I still have some files on it, the transfer to my computer is slow, and because I use an old wire it fails often.

The problem is that randomly the mac will get kicked off the file share (even when i am in the middle of using it) and will not be allowed to reconnect to it until i reboot the windows 7 machine. (Rebooting the mac doesn't help) Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen?

• How can I restart yum?

  on my server, yum is using a LOT of system resources. My friend suggested to kill -9 it, but I want to know I'll be able to restart it first. Preferably without rebooting the whole server. • Windows 7 doesn't show image size for all images

  On Windows 7's new file layout in Explorer. Some PNGs will show the size whereas others won't. I've tried rebooting and clearing the cache, but it doesn't work. Also, all of these images were saved with Paint.NET, so I am sure that the size isn't embeded in the file, and if it is, it appears that Windows doesn't go by it. The ones without sizes are 300x300. Is there a maximum size before it won't show the size anymore?

• resolv.conf not working properly with Ethernet in Ubuntu

  I have a Lenovo X200 laptop on which I am running Ubuntu 9.10. Recently, (I assume after some updating, but I really don't know) my ethernet port stopped working under Linux. A more tech/linux-savvy friend of mine was able to temporarily fix the problem by manually editing the resolv.conf file with the DNS servers he found through his connection. However, after rebooting, the problem came back and now I am looking for a more permanent solution.

• SQL Server 2000 Client won't connect

  One day instead of connecting to the database my SQL Server Management gave me the following error: "Data Source name not found & no default driver found" Note it had been working for several years before this, all that had changed was an upgrade to Office (97 -2000) and the monthly Windows patches. I tried rebooting, re-installing both the SQL Server 2000 and 2005 clients on the machine but no joy. I can access the database(s) from other machines.

  I've just taken over managing the network for a small charity, and am finding internet access very flaky - we keep getting "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." errors (HTTP Error 12031 according to the Windows network diagnostic tool). It doesn't seem to be anything to do with our ISP since it also affects internal traffic (even requests to an Apache instance on my localhost!) Adjusting the MTU setting in the Windows XP registry sometimes seems to help for a few minutes after rebooting, but the problem always returns.

I realize it's possible to do this but only after rebooting the computer, and that is something we don't always want to do, especially since some of the software I want to deploy on servers. • VPN Router drops connections

  We are using a Netgear VPN Firewall Router FVS318v3.. We have a DSL connection here at the office, and my users complain of the connection dropping, or locking up on their end.. Latest firmware is installed, rebooting the router doesn't help, no other internet connectivity issues reported anywhere else (ie., no other internet connection problems here, or at their end, except when connecting to the VPN..)   On my Mac, I have a UDP port that is "already in use", but doesn't have an associated process: sudo netstat -na | grep "udp.*\.500\>" shows udp4 0 0 192.168.50.181.500 *.* udp4 0 0 192.168.29.166.500 *.* sudo lsof doesn't show a process on port 500 (ie sudo lsof -i:500 -P reports nothing). Note I'm using 'sudo' on both commands so it should show all processes. (rebooting works, but looking for something less disruptive) How can I unbind port 500 so I can use it again?

• iTunes video black screen until select computer output

  I don't remember this happening before, but now whenever I play any video in iTunes (podcast video, movie, TV show, iTunes extras stuff but the menus work) it just shows a black screen with the sound playing. If I stop it, select "Computer" in the little output control on the iTunes video control panel that pops up, then play again, it works fine. What the heck? Tried rebooting, updating, with and without external monitor. OSX 10.6.6
