  • Partial class or "chained inheritance"

    - by Charlie boy
Hi From my understanding partial classes are a bit frowned upon by professional developers, but I've come over a bit of an issue; I have made an implementation of the RichTextBox control that uses user32.dll calls for faster editing of large texts. That results in quite a bit of code. Then I added spellchecking capabilities to the control, this was made in another class inheriting RichTextBox control as well. That also makes up a bit of code. These two functionalities are quite separate but I would like them to be merged so that I can drop one control on my form that has both fast editing capabilities and spellchecking built in. I feel that simply adding the code form one class to the other would result in a too large code file, especially since there are two very distinct areas of functionality, so I seem to need another approach. Now to my question; To merge these two classes should I make the spellchecking RichTextBox inherit from the fast edit one, that in turn inherits RichTextBox? Or should I make the two classes partials of a single class and thus making them more “equal” so to speak? This is more of a question of OO principles and exercise on my part than me trying to reinvent the wheel, I know there are plenty of good text editing controls out there. But this is just a hobby for me and I just want to know how this kind of solution would be managed by a professional. Thanks!

  • WPF Spellcheck Engine takes up too much memory.

    - by Matt H.
Each datatemplate in my WPF ItemsControl contains FIVE custom bindable richtextbox controls. It is a data-driven app that for authoring multiple-choice questions -- The question and four answer choices must all support: 1) Spell check 2) Rich formatting (otherwise I'd use regular textboxes) The spell check object in .NET 4 has a Friend constructor that takes a single argument of owner As TextBoxBase This means every richtextbox in the ItemsControl has 5 Spellcheck objects! This is the problem -- every spell check engine is consuming about 500k memory. So after you favor in the spellcheck, bindings, additional controls in the DataTemplate, etc.. a single multi choice question consumes more than 3MB memory. Users with 100--200 questions will quickly see the App raise it's memory consumption to 500+ MB. Management is definitely not OK with this. Is there a way to minimimze this problem? The best suggestion I've heard is to enable/disable spellcheck if the richtextbox is in the ItemsControl's scrollviewer: I haven't gotten an answer to how to go about it: (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2869012/possible-to-implement-an-isviewportvisible-dependencyproperty-for-an-item-in-an-i) Any good ideas?

  • ADO.NET - DataRead Error

    - by user560706
    Hi, I am trying to display data from a column in my database onto my rich textbox, but I am getting mixed up between DataSet and DataReader - I know the majority of the code below is correct, I just get two lines containing errors, and I'm not sure why: // Create a connection string string ConnectionString = ("Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source= C:\\Documents and Settings\\Harley\\Desktop\\Test.accdb"); string SQL = "SELECT * FROM Paragraph"; // create a connection object SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(ConnectionString); // Create a command object SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(SQL, conn); conn.Open(); DataTable dt = new DataTable(); da.Fill(dt); //ERROR // Call ExecuteReader to return a DataReader SqlDataReader reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); foreach(DataRow reader in dsRtn) //ERROR { richTextBox = richTextBox.Text + reader[0].ToString(); } //Release resources reader.Close(); conn.Close(); }

  • Performing periodic audits and best practice

    - by DTown
I'm doing a windows form and would like an audit task to happen every 30 seconds. This audit is essentially checking a series of services on remote computers and reporting back into a richtextbox the status. Current I have this running in an endless background thread and using an invoker to update the richtextbox in the main form. Is this best practice? If I made an endless loop in my main form that would prevent any of my buttons from working, correct? I'm just curious if every time I want to create a periodic audit check I have to create a new thread which checks the status or file or what have you?

  • Possible to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependencyproperty for an item in an ItemsControl?

    - by Matt H.
I need to enable/disable spell checking in a richtextbox in an ItemsControl, based on whether the RichTextBox is visible in the ItemsControl's Scrollviewer. I think the route is to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependency property and wire an event handler for a changed event... I found this article that describes the lengthy process for determining if an item is in the viewport: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/wpf/thread/e6ccfec3-3dc0-4702-9d0d-1cfa55ecfc90 Any ideas on where to start? I'm familiar with implementing my own dependency property for the sake of simple bindings (integers, strings, etc...). I have no idea how to undergo something like this though) This is the end result I'm hoping for: <DataTemplate> <Grid> ...Stuff in the Grid <local:CustomRichTextBox SpellCheck.IsEnabled={Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}, Path=IsViewPortVisible}/> </Grid> </DataTemplate> Help will be EXTREMELY appreciated... you'll be saving me about 500MB in memory consumption while the program is running!!!! :)

  • WPF Datatemplate + ItemsControl each item uses > 1 MB Memory?

    - by Matt H.
Does that sound right to anyone???? I have an ItemsControl that displays data from a custom object that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged. The DataTemplate consists of: Border 3 buttons 5 textboxes An ellipse A Bindable RichTextBox (custom class that inherits from RichTextBox... so I could make Document a dependency property (to support binding)) Several grids and stackpanels for layout It uses: Styles (stored in a resource dictionary higher up the tree) Styles affect: colors, thicknesses, and text properties: which are data-bound to a "settings" class that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged, so the user can change display settings That's it! So what gives? I've also noticed that when I empty and remove the ItemsControl, memory isn't freed. over 5000 instances of "CommandBindingCollection" and "WeakReference" are CREATED (using ANTS profiler). And huge number of EffectiveValueEntry objects are created too. So really, what gives!!! :-) Thanks for your insight! Management needs this project soon but in its current state, it's unreleasable.

  • Illegal cross thread operation exception, unable to handle it

    - by yeah1000
Hello, i am using visual C# express 2008. I SOMETIMES get the illegal cross thread operation in my invoke method when i try to run my project. It use the same invoke method in many places but its only at the beginning of another thread that i get the error. I check the InvokeRequired property, invoke the same method and in the 'else' condition and create a temporary variable and assign it the text of my control. In this Issue: Andrea Boschin, Radenko Zec, Andrej Tozon, Bobby Diaz, Brad Abrams, Wolf Schmidt, Colin Eberhardt, Anand Iyer, Matthias Shapiro, Jaime Rodriguez, Bill Reiss, and Lee. Shoutouts: Cigdem has a post up about here MIX10 Interviewing experiences: MIX10 SilverlightShow Interviews Ian T. Lackey has his material up from his talk Silverlight SEO at the St. Louis .Net Users Group Not Silverlight but definitely WP7 cool, Michael Klucher reports that there are New Windows Phone Samples on Creators Club Online Tim Heuer posted a survey: What tools are the minimum to get started in Silverlight? From SilverlightCream.com: A RoleManager to apply roles declaratively to user interface Andrea Boschin also has a new post at SilverlightShow discussing the use of a RoleManager in WCF RIA Services to apply user roles to elements of the UI... good stuff, Andrea. Virtualization in Silverlight 4 RC Radenko Zec has a post out at SilverlightShow where he explains UI and Data Virtualization then gives some examples of their use in Silverlight 4RC, and some issues as well. MS Word Mail Merge with Silverlight 4 COM Automation Andrej Tozon has a post up at SilverlightShow that I missed in the rush of MIX10. He's doing MailMerge with COM automation and Silverlight 4... actually prett cool stuff and all the source! KISS and Tell - MVVM and the ViewModelLocator Bobby Diaz is blogging about a very popular subject right now: ViewModelLocator. He's not showing production code, but it's a thought... check it out. Silverlight 4 + RIA Services - Ready for Business: Validating Data I'm running behind, but Brad Abrams' next post in his series is about validating data in the business application. He also discusses setting up shared code validation. A One-stop Shopping XAML Namespace for Silverlight Client SDK Controls Wolf Schmidt at the Silverlight SDK has a post up highlighting the SL4 XAML namespace prefix. He starts with SL3 then demonstrates the feature's use in SL4. Binding a Silverlight 3 DataGrid to dynamic data via IDictionary (Updated) Colin Eberhardt has an update to his previous article of the same title. This one is a bug fix on an upgrade to SL3 and also an expansion of the previous post. Demo Apps from MIX10 on Windows Phone 7 Anand Iyer posted links to all the WP7 demos used at MIX10 and at least in the case of FourSquare, the source is on CodePlex. XAML Files for Location Visualizations in Silverlight and WPF Matthias Shapiro has graciously provided XAML for us for Silverlight and WPF for a bunch of different US maps... too cool, now we don't have to be asking 'where did you get that map?'... thanks Matthias! Theming in Windows Phone Jaime Rodriguez has a post up that deep-dives theming in general and demonstrates using it on WP7... end-user configurations and developer stuff. Space Rocks game step 7: Moving the ship It appears that in the heat of battle (blogging) I said Bill Reiss' Space Rocks game he's building is for WP7... obviously it's not, but it's a game folks... :) THis is Episode 7 and he's moving the ship now. SL4(RC) RichTextBox and Access Violation Lee has some code that looks like it should work for a RichTextBox in SL4RC, and it's throwing an error... see if you have a solution for him... or is it a bug? • Drop Down Box and other stuff in ASP.NET with VB.NET (VS 2008)

    - by typoknig
Hi all, I am trying to polish up a program a program that I have converted from a Windows Form in to an ASP.NET Web Application. I have several questions: 1.) I have a drop down box where users can select their variables, but users can also enter their variables manually into various text fields. What I want is for the drop down box to show a string like "Choose Variables" when ever the user enters their variables manually. I want this to happen without having to reload the page. 2.) In the Windows Form version of this application I had a RichTextBox that populated with data (line by line) after a calculation was made. I used "AppendText" in my Windows Form, but that is not available in ASP.NET, and neither is the RichTextBox. I am open to suggestions here, I tried to use just a text box but that isn't working right. 3.) In my Windows Form application I was using "KeyPress" events to prevent incorrect characters from being entered into the text fields. My code for these events looked similar to this: Private Sub TextBox_KeyPress(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles TextBox.KeyPress If (e.KeyChar < "0" OrElse e.KeyChar > "9") AndAlso e.KeyChar <> ControlChars.Back AndAlso e.KeyChar <> "." Then e.Handled = True End If End Sub How can I make this work again... also without reloading the page. 4.) This is not a major issue, but I would like all of the text to be selected when the cursor enters a field. In my Windows Form application I used "SelectAll", but again, that is not available in ASP.NET Thanks in advanced.

  • VB.NET Syntax Coding

    - by Yiu Korochko
I know many people ask how some of these are done, but I do not understand the context in which to use the answers, so... I'm building a code editor for a subversion of Python language, and I found a very decent way of highlighting keywords in the RichTextBox through this: bluwords.Add(KEYWORDS GO HERE) If scriptt.Text.Length > 0 Then Dim selectStart2 As Integer = scriptt.SelectionStart scriptt.Select(0, scriptt.Text.Length) scriptt.SelectionColor = Color.Black scriptt.DeselectAll() For Each oneWord As String In bluwords Dim pos As Integer = 0 Do While scriptt.Text.ToUpper.IndexOf(oneWord.ToUpper, pos) >= 0 pos = scriptt.Text.ToUpper.IndexOf(oneWord.ToUpper, pos) scriptt.Select(pos, oneWord.Length) scriptt.SelectionColor = Color.Blue pos += 1 Loop Next scriptt.SelectionStart = selectStart2 End If (scriptt is the richtextbox) But when any decent amount of code is typed (or loaded via OpenFileDialog) chunks of the code go missing, the syntax selection falls apart, and it just plain ruins it. I'm looking for a more efficient way of doing this, maybe something more like visual studio itself...because there is NO NEED to highlight all text, set it black, then redo all of the syntaxing, and the text begins to over-right if you go back to insert characters between text. Also, in this version of Python, hash (#) is used for comments on comment only lines and double hash (##) is used for comments on the same line. Now I saw that someone had asked about this exact thing, and the working answer to select to the end of the line was something like: ^\'[^\r\n]+$|''[^\r\n]+$ which I cannot seem to get into practice. I also wanted to select text between quotes and turn it turquoise, such as between the first quotation mark and the second, the text is turquoise, and the same between the 3rd and 4th etcetera... Any help is appreciated!

  • Design difficulty for multiple panel forms [closed]

    - by petre
I have form that consists of multiple panel on the right, a treeview on the left and a terminal richtextbox on the bottom. When i click on a node of the treeview i bring up the panel that is attached with the node. For example i have 10 nodes on the treeview, i have 10 panels that are attached to this nodes. On every panel, i have many textboxes, labels, comboboxes etc. I don't dynamically construct and dispose the items on the panels, i create the items in the designer file of the project. In that case, there is a problem. I really find it difficult to align or place items on the panel because there seems a lot of aligning lines on the screen. What should be done to make the design of the panels easy? I don't want to construct items dynamically. Do i have to do that dynamically or is there a design procedure that make this process easy?
