  • Appropriate use of DL and DD?

    - by Ian
I had some site templates designed for me recently. I got the final HTML code, which validates, but the structure of the document is laid out using DL-DD pairs: <dl> <dd class="some-class"> Some text. </dd> </dl> I'm not especially familiar with those tags as I've never used them much, but they don't seem intended for document structure. Am I right? Why would a designer do this?

  • Multiple submits in an HTML form

    - by StackOverflowNewbie
I have an HTML form that needs multiple submit buttons, like this: <input type="submit" name="foo" value="1"/> <input type="submit" name="foo" value="2"/> <input type="submit" name="foo" value="3"/> The problem is that I want it to display on the button something other than what is in the value attribute (in the example above: 1, 2, 3). For example, I want to show "Bar" for the button with value="1". Is this possible? I've considered using the <button> tag, like this: <button name="foo" value="1">Bar</button> The problem with using <button> (from w3schools): If you use the element in an HTML form, different browsers may submit different values. Internet Explorer, prior version 9, will submit the text between the and tags, while other browsers will submit the content of the value attribute. Use the element to create buttons in an HTML form. Thoughts?

  • Is there a difference between `==` and `is` in python?

    - by Bernard
My Google-fu has failed me. In Python, are these: n = 5 # Test one. if n == 5: print 'Yay!' # Test two. if n is 5: print 'Yay!' two tests for equality equivalent (ha!)? Does this hold true for objects where you would be comparing instances (a list say)? Okay, so this kind of answers my question: l = list() l.append(1) if l == [1]: print 'Yay!' # Holds true, but... if l is [1]: print 'Yay!' # Doesn't. So == tests value where is tests to see if they are the same object?

  • Semantic stuff (RDF, OWL) on mobile phones - is it possible?

    - by Brian Schimmel
I'm thinking about using semantic (web) technogies like RDF and OWL in an application on mobile devices. Currently I'm targeting android, but I'd also be interested in the possibilities on the iPhone and on J2ME. I would like to use a lib instead of implementing everything from scratch. I know that there are some libraries and frameworks like Jena, Redland, Protégé but they don't state on which platforms they are known to work. Having a dynamic object model and parsing from and to XML are must-haves for me. I'd also like to use reasoning, but I've been told it was rather computing-intensive, so that's only a nice-to-have. For all platforms mentioned, the question can be interpreted as Is it possible in theory (especially for J2ME I'm not sure) Are there libs that are known to work on those platforms? Is the performance on a mobile platform good enough for real world usage?

  • NLP: any easy and good methods to find semantic similarity between words?

    - by sadawd
Dear Everyone, I don't know whether stackoverflow covers NLP, so I am gonna give this a shot. I am interested to find the semantic relatedness of two words from a specific domain, i.e. "image quality" and "noise". I am doing some research to determine if reviews of a cameras are positive or negative for a particular attribute of the camera. (like image quality in each one of the reviews). However, not everybody uses the exact same wording "image quality" in the posts, so I am out to see if there is a way for me to build something like that: "image quality" which includes ("noise", "color", "sharpness", etc etc) so I can wrap all everything within one big umbrella. I am doing this for another language, so Wordnet is not necessarily helpful. And no, I do now work for Google or Microsoft so I do not have data from people's clicking behavior as input data either. However, I do have a lot of text, pos-tagged, segmented etc. Thanks

  • How to make a cross browser, W3C valid, semantic, non-javascript ROUND corner?

    - by jitendra
I want to make a cross-browser (FF3, IE6, Safari, Opera), W3C valid (HTML and CSS both), stretchable (horizontally vertically), without JavaScript and with Semantic and lesser HTML markup Round CORNER. Images can be used for IE6. I've tried and tested many techniques available on community. But everything has one of the problems mentioned above . If anyone knows what I want please share with me? Remember I want to make it without any type of JavaScript, jquery or any type of js.

  • How can I create specialized builders for semantic layout in rails?

    - by Paul Alexander
This is how I'd like to write markup in say index.html.erb <%= page_for "Super Cool Page" do |p| %> <%= p.header do %> Ruby is Cool <% end %> <%= p.body do %> Witty discourse on Ruby. <% end %> <% if page.has_sidebar? %> <%= p.sidebar do %> <ul><li>Option 1</li></ul> <% end %> <% end %> <% end %> Which would output <div class="page"> <header><h1>Super Cool Page</h1></header> <section> Witty discourse on Ruby. </section> </div> and when page.has_sidebar? is true <div class="page"> <header><h1>Super Cool Page</h1></header> <asside><ul><li>Option 1</li></ul></asside> <section> Witty discourse on Ruby. </section> </div> I've taken a look at the FormHelper class in rails for guidance, but it seems like I'd have to duplicate a lot of work which I'm trying to avoid. I'm really just trying to figure out where to hang the classes/modules/methods in the framework and whit kind of object |p| should be. My first inclination was to create a PageBuilder class that implements header, body and sidebar methods. But I got stuck on the rendering pipeline to get everything output just right. Is there a gem that already provides this type of semantic generation? If not I'd love any insight on how to set this up.

  • Emacs, C++ code completion for vectors

    - by Caglar Toklu
Hi, I am new to Emacs, and I have the following code as a sample. I have installed GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (i386-mingw-nt6.1.7600), installed cedet-1.0pre7.tar.gz. , installed ELPA, and company. You can find my simple Emacs configuration at the bottom. The problem is, when I type q[0] in main() and press . (dot), I see the 37 members of the vector, not Person although first_name and last_name are expected. The completion works as expected in the function greet() but it has nothing to do with vector. My question is, how can I accomplish code completion for vector elements too? #include <iostream> #include <vector> using namespace std; class Person { public: string first_name; string last_name; }; void greet(Person a_person) { // a_person.first_name is completed as expected! cout << a_person.first_name << "|"; cout << a_person.last_name << endl; }; int main() { vector<Person> q(2); Person guy1; guy1.first_name = "foo"; guy1.last_name = "bar"; Person guy2; guy2.first_name = "stack"; guy2.last_name = "overflow"; q[0] = guy1; q[1] = guy2; greet(guy1); greet(guy2); // cout q[0]. I want to see first_name or last_name here! } My Emacs configuration: ;;; This was installed by package-install.el. ;;; This provides support for the package system and ;;; interfacing with ELPA, the package archive. ;;; Move this code earlier if you want to reference ;;; packages in your .emacs. (when (load (expand-file-name "~/.emacs.d/elpa/package.el")) (package-initialize)) (load-file "~/.emacs.d/cedet/common/cedet.el") (semantic-load-enable-excessive-code-helpers) (require 'semantic-ia) (global-srecode-minor-mode 1) (semantic-add-system-include "/gcc/include/c++/4.4.2" 'c++-mode) (semantic-add-system-include "/gcc/i386-pc-mingw32/include" 'c++-mode) (semantic-add-system-include "/gcc/include" 'c++-mode) (defun my-semantic-hook () (imenu-add-to-menubar "TAGS")) (add-hook 'semantic-init-hooks 'my-semantic-hook)

  • Semantic Fish-eye zoom on table cells in UIKit?

    - by niblha
How would I go about implementing a table view that looks and works something as illustrated in the link below, with UIKit for the iPhone? http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4177/uifisheyeview.png I was thinking of using UITableView, and was looking a bit at the UITableViewDelegate methods tableView:willDisplayCell:forRowAtIndexPath: tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: But it seems as the UITableView will modify the cell frames after these methods are called and just before the cells are drawn? Maybe skipping the UITableView and go straight for some subclassing of a UIScrollView would be a better approach? So my question is basically that I would just like some overall thought in what might be the best ways to use existing UIKit components to implement this type of table view.

  • Is it really best to make site without using <div>, using semantic tags only?

    - by jitendra
I found this on net in google search and see article here: http://www.thatcssguy.com/limit-your-divs/ See his final layout here: http://www.nodivs.com/ Some quotes from article 1 When I limited the use of my divs all the major browser including both IE6 and IE7 would render the sites nearly perfectly. Or with very little fixes needed. 2 it’s magic but proves divs nor tables are necessary for layout Should we try to make sites like this?

  • Whats the best semantic default/starting layout for html5?

    - by John Isaacks
    I am a little confused on how the new tags should go. Is this correct: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> <title></title> </head> <body> <section> <header> <nav></nav> </header> <section> </section> <footer> </footer> <section> </body> </html> Or should one of the sections be an <article>? What should be the starting layout?
