• CSS - how can I handle the size difference between serif and sans-serif fonts?

  I'm working on a WordPress that will allow the site administrator to switch between sans-serif and serif fonts. I'm trying to code the stylesheet in such a way that the font sizes are similar whether or not they choose Georgia vs Arial. The problem is that when I have it looking nice with a serif font, it looks WAY too big when in sans-serif. When I then adjust it to look nice in a sans-serif font, it looks WAY too small in serif. Is there an ideal font size and line-height that works well with both serif and sans-serif? Or do I need to make separate stylesheets (a serf version and a sans-serif version)? P.S. I've set a base font size on the body at 12px, and then set the rest of the font sizes as a percentage of the base. Of course, this base font size could be set in ems or in percent, because the percentages will still scale proportionally.

• Is there a nice XSL stylesheet for client-side DocBook rendering?

  I want the DocBook documents in my SVN repository to look nice if someone looks at them in a web browser. I've started to write a CSS stylesheet, but I think that it will have significant limitations -- particularly ones regarding hyperlinks. There is a large body of DocBook XSL stylesheets at the DocBook site , but they don't seem to be appropriate for browser rendering. I don't want to generate static documents and put them into SVN. I want them to be basically readable for other developers without much hassle. I could write my own browser-appropriate XSL stylesheet to convert DocBook to HTML, but it seems like someone else must have already done this. I just don't know where to find it.

• fastest in-memory cache for XslCompiledTransform

  I have a set of xslt stylesheet files. I need to produce the fastest performance of XslConpiledTransform, so i want to make in-memory representation of these stylesheets. I can load them to in-memory collection as IXpathNavigable on application start, and then load each IXPAthNavigable into singleton XslCompiledTransform on each request. But this works only for styleshhets without xsl:import or xsl:include. (Xsl:import is only for files). also i can load into cache many instances of XSLCompiledTransform for each template. Is it reasonable? Are there other ways? What is the best? what are another tips for improving performance MS Xslt processor?

  Hello all, If i apply a property to a parent widget it is automatically applied for child widgets too.. Is there any way of preventing this?? For example if i set background color as white in a dialog the button,combo boxes and scroll bars looks white as it lacks it native look(have to say it's unpleasant & ugly).. Is there any way that i can apply the stylesheets only to a parent widget not to it's children??? Experts help please..

• caching static files for ruby on rails application using nginx

  I have been trying for some time to serve & cache static files for my rails app using nginx. the rails app server runs mongrel_cluster and is deployed on a different host than that of nginx. following many of the available discussions I tried the following server { listen 80; server_name www.myappserver.com; ssl on; root /var/apps/myapp/current/public; location ~ ^/(images|javascripts|stylesheets)/ { root /var/apps/myapp/current; expires 10y; } location / { proxy_pass http://myapp_upstream; } } But nginx fails to find the images and to load the css and js files. Can anyone help me out here? My aim is to configure nginx in such a way that it caches the static files till expiry. Please suggest me some way to achieve this or am I missing any point here?

• flex strange problem with namespaces.

  I'm trying to understand what is going on with my namespaces since I upgraded to flash builder 4. xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" in the application and in the stylesheets: @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"; Everything seems to be recognized correctly, however, I get a warning that says "borderThickness" is only supported by the halo theme (which I thought was in the mx theme). Now, when I try xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" then it doesn;t recognize anything. Is there something I might be doing wrong here or confusing?

• Safari does not show images, but FireFox does

  I have a website that I am working on: http://keramed.com in FireFox on my Mac the image on the main page shows up. (The Endoshield DSEK Graft Injector) Now check in Safari and the image does not show up. I have tried taking the original .PSD and saving it as a .jpg or .png and it does not matter. I have commented out all stylesheets and this still does not solve it. The rest of my images are showing up, just not thing one. I just dont understand I am stumped. EDIT: Photoshop says it is an RGB 8-bit image.

• Can a stylesheet for handhelds skip loading images

  I have a stylesheet for desktops, and another for handhelds. The web page displays some images when displayed on the desktop, but hides those images when displayed on handhelds. The page appears as designed for both desktops and handhelds. When I check the server logs, I find that the handheld is actually still loading the images, just not displaying them. Is there a way to stop the handheld from loading the images entirely, since it doesn't need them, without having to maintain two sets of web pages? Can it be done using just stylesheets?   I just came up with this, it seems to work in all modern browsers, I just tested it then on (IE8/compatibility, Chrome, Safari, Moz) HTML <img id="my_image" alt="my text" src="images/small_transparent.gif" /> CSS #my_image{ background-image:url('images/my_image.png'); width:100px; height:100px;} Pro's: image alt text is best-practice for accessibility/seo no extra HTML markup, and the css is pretty minimal too gets around the css on/images off issue where "text-indent" techniques hide text from low bandwidth users The biggest disadvantage that I can think of is the css off/images on situation, because you'll only send a transparent gif. I'd like to know, who uses images without stylesheets? some kind of mobile phone or something? I'm making some sites for clients in regional Australia (hundreds of km from the nearest city), where many users will be suffering from dial-up connections, and often outdated browsers too, so the "images off" issue is an important consideration. are there any other side effects with this technique that I haven't considered?

• Is it bad to have the <link> tag for hCard when there is no hCard on that page?

  I'm just wondering if it is bad practice to put the <link> tag for hCard profile on every page, if you don't know that the page being rendered has an hCard. My site has hCards - is it worth trimming the link tag out of the pages that don't have them? <link rel="profile" href="http://microformats.org/profile/hcard"> Does this mean this page has an hCard or look for an hCard on this page? Does it mean interpret an hCard as specified, if found? Obviously, you can pull in stylesheets using <link> but they apply to the page. I don't even see anything at that destination other than some sub-par hCard documentation.

• Rails 3 beta 1 - Nested layouts - LocalJumpError

  Hi Nested layouts do not work in Rails 3. After I hit this I tried Rails Guides Example on a blank project (both ruby 1.9.1 and 1.8.7). LocalJumpError no block given on line <%= yield :stylesheets %. If you remove this line you will get the same error on the next yield statement. Could someone fix(patch) this? It's probably just a matter of calling block_given? in the right place. That would be great. Thanks Added on 4/3: Rails 3 beta 2 released. Problem fixed.

  I have some stylesheets from different sources in my web project. I want to harmonize them. Some styles I need from the one, some from the other. Is there a tool or method how to systematically resolve style conflicts? I tried IE8 developer tool, and yes, it is possible to view conflicts at the level of each element. But I have many elemens, so if I do it element by element I think this takes too long. Theoretically there could be a tool that shows conflicts of two css files at design time?!? I think this would save me a lot of time.

  I transform XML to (sort of) HTML with XSL stylesheets (using Apache Xalan). In XML there can be entities like &mdash;, which must be left as is. In beginning of XML file I have a doctype which references these entities. What should I do for entity to be left unchanged? <!DOCTYPE article [ <!ENTITY mdash "&mdash;"><!-- em dash --> ]> gives me SAXParseException: Recursive entity expansion, 'mdash' when encountering &mdash in XML text.

• CSS gaps between image links for no reason

  Hi, I've been trying to get this horizontal navigation sorted for the past few hours now and nothing is working. I've tried reset.css stylesheets, *{padding: 0; margin: 0) etc. and I still have gaps inbetween my image links. You see, the navigation is made up of an unordered list of image links displayed inline, but there are gaps in between each image, left, right, top and bottom and I can't see why. It's the same in all browsers. Here is a link to the page, and so source: Beansheaf Temporary I can't post more than one link (damn reputation) so the css is at the same url but in the directory "styles" and is called "fund2.css". As such, it seems that there would be value in having pre-build Rails applications at various functionality points such as: basic User model with authentication using Authlogic #1 + openid integration #2 + authorization using declarative_authorization #3 + Administration module #4 + a Profile model Themes (useful stylesheets and such) Friendship model Geocoding ... In addition to the basic MVC stuff, these applications would include: testing harnesses seed data git support One could choose start from any of these functionality points. Other than the sample application that are available with the various gems/plugins, are there projects such as these? If not, I would certainly be willing to contribute what I have.

  Many email clients don't like linked CSS stylesheets, or even the embedded <style> tag, but rather want the CSS to appear inline as style attributes on all your markup. BAD: <link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="/style.css"> BAD: <style type="text/css">...</style> WORKS: <h1 style="margin: 0">...</h1> However this inline style attribute approach is a right pain to manage. I've found tools for Ruby and PHP that will take a CSS file and some separate markup as input and return you the merged result - a single file of markup with all the CSS converted to style attributes. I'm looking for a Perl solution to this problem, but I've not found one on CPAN or by searching Google. Any pointers? • Android Dropdown (Select) CSS

  I'm currently writing some stylesheets for mobile browsers and have come across a strange issue in the Android browser. When changing the font-size CSS attribute of a text box the box gets bigger to accomodate the larger text. Doing this on a select box however does not change the size of the select box, but the text still gets larger (actually overlapping the top and bottom of the rendered form element). Can anyone tell me if it's possible to increase the height of select boxes in the Android browser. Or if not point me in the direction of a list of CSS attributes that can be applied to them. • Wordpress htaccess in root overriding htaccess in subdomain. Subdomain app not working now.

  Hello, We have a WP install in the root of our server and its running great.. but, we just installed another app in a subdomain. Now, I can view the index.php of that app but cannot do anything with it.. the htaccess rules in the root (from WP base install) are effecting the requests. So, how to I eliminate the WP htaccess file from effecting the subdomain? • Are there any tools that can inline css?

  Because some email clients don't properly render external stylesheets (or even styles within the of an html email message), inlining css is a common approach to try to maintain consistent look and feel between a website and emails. But manually inlining styles is painful and error prone. I'm looking for a way to let users create messages using the same stylesheet as their website uses, but then converts the text to a more email appropriate format prior to sending. While it's certainly possible to write a tool that reads styles and the DOM, injecting the correct inline style for each element, I'm hoping there's already a tool available that does this. Unfortunately, my googling hasn't yielded any useful results. Do you know of any tools that can inline css styles? I'm not picky about the language, though if it's not open source, I'll probably just write my own.

• how to display "complex" widgets in a list in pyqt?

  I'm quite new to QT and I have to display a list of "panels" like this: My datamodel handles different classes' instances, so having more than one panel layout would be great - but it's not a requirement. Btw I have to catch mouse clicks on the images to execute related actions. I'm thinking about use some html capable widget (QWebPage?) to render the items in a QListView or QListWidget, but as I said, I don't know QTs so much and need a direction (delegates? stylesheets?). Any help will be appreciated.
