• I can't update my system properly, "no package header" error

  Every time I try to run sudo apt-get update or try running updates from the GUI interface I run into the following problem or something similar: Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I've tried purging using sudo rm -rf <filename> where <filename> is the listed file above, and then running sudo apt-get update to fix it (as listed elsewhere in this forum) and no luck, just keep getting this message. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and this is getting really frustrating... I just want a system that runs smoothly and doesn't require it's hand to be held when it comes to updates. • My raycaster is putting out strange results, how do I fix it?

  I'm working on a raycaster in ActionScript 3.0 for the fun of it, and as a learning experience. I've got it up and running and its displaying me output as expected however I'm getting this strange bug where rays go through corners of blocks and the edges of blocks appear through walls. Maybe somebody with more experience can point out what I'm doing wrong or maybe a fresh pair of eyes can spot a tiny bug I haven't noticed. Thank you so much for your help!   I've been chatting with my colleagues the other day and heard that their coding standard explicitly forbids them to use the var keyword in C#. They had no idea why it was so and I've always found implicit declaration to be incredibly useful when coding. I've never had any problems finding out what type the variable was (you only hover over the variable in VS and you'll get the type that way). Does anyone know why it would be a bad idea to use the var keyword in C#?

  Hi everyone I've got a cronjob that runs every minute and checks existence of a certain file. If there's no such file, job silently ends. If there is a file, then another script is started. That script removes the file when done. Its execution time can take up to 20 minutes. My questions are: Are there any flaws in this scheme? Is it ok to store such file in tmp? Can I be shure that nothing will attempt to remove it?

  I have purchases a server today and I am almost through configuring it, I have managed to install mysql and have enabled a firewall which allows access to ports 80, 22 and 443 I am trying to test out a simple php file to see whether all is well but I get a 404 Not found error, I am certain that this file exists which was created using vi as I have confirmed it using Filezilla. What am I missing? is there another step that I must take to allow a simple php file to work.

• /var/run/utmp is getting large and slowing my server down

  I removed it and touched an empty verison a few weeks ago and noticed a big upswing in performance for my server. The file was 400+ MB. I've been keeping an eye on it since and I'm noticing it is growing fairly quickly. I tailed the file and I'm seeing a lot of "TTYXXLOGIN" entries. Should I be concerned? Is there a way to minimize it's logging? Should I logrotate it and forget about it? Thanks in advance.

• Passing a var as an argument

  On a site I'm making I need to have a progress bar, I found one that suited my needs. By default it will incrementally change the color when a certain percentage is reached (0-30 red, 30-70 orange, etc). My only problem is changing them, I can set them easily with a static number such as 50, but when I try to do it dynamically (ie: 2000*.3 = 600) it fails. I don't know much js/jquery so this is especially difficult for me, if you could help that would be great. I'm pretty sure it's something really simple I'm missing. • How to reference var from frame on timeline in an object class

  I'm using Flash Professional cs5/AS3 I'll try and describe this the best I can. I'm new to ActionScript. So, in my timeline I have a var on a frame that represents "lives" and i have some code in the timeline that takes down the number of lives depending on certain events, which all works great. so, now i wanted to make a constructor class that I could reuse for a bunch of movie clip objects and I only want these objects to be able to move if the lives variable is greater than certain number. So now, building my constructor class for these objects i just wanted put an if statement that is looking to see if the lives are greater than a certain number, which if it is then should make these objects do what i want...But, when i run the project I get "1120: Access of undefined property lives." lives is the var I made obviously like I said, and it works fine being referenced everyone else except when I make a new .as file for these objects then try and reference it. I get the same error when I try and establish "lives" in the main project class too. I'm not sure where I should put this var or how I can make it so i can reference it from an object class. I'm not really sure how to word or describe my issue which has made it hard to search for a tutorial. Any suggestions i'm sure this has to be a simple task.

  I came across this answer where the poster suggested that the shorthand for if(typeof MyNamespace === 'undefined'){ var MyNamespace = {}; } is var MyNamespace = MyNamespace || {}; Would veteran programmers recommend the latter to simplify the code, or does it overly complicate things, like abusing ++ or -- in complex compound statements? EDIT The reason I asked is b/c a while back someone inspired me by pointing out that a lot of the people who think they are expert programmers make a lot of beginners mistakes. The case at the time was if (isReady){ //Do Something } And what he was saying is that a condition should mean something, isReady doesn't 'mean' anything, instead, we should use if (isReady === true){ //Do Something }

  Hi All, I am trying to get a var from a PHP script running on my web server and from every forum post I have read, what I am doing should be working. I have the following: var lvContent = new LoadVars(); lvContent.load("http://{MY_DOMAIN}/Includes/getID.php"); trace("ID: " + lvContent.pageID); The problem is that ID in the trace is always undefined. The object return from ObjectQuery, is not normal object, but EntityObject but what if i write : ( notice the var) var q = customers /*EF entity*/ .Select (c => c.Name.ToUpper()) .OrderBy (n => n) it can be determined both to ienumerable or iqueryable : because ObjectQuery Also implements IEnumerable... i dont know if there's any specific info which tell the compiler "use A and not B. A is more specific..." ( there must be...i just cant find it) any help ? how will it know to use A || B ?

• Unable to access static var from Document Class in AS3

  I have a Document class called "CityModule", and an asset with class "City". Below is the coe for each.   Scala does not permit to create laze vars, only lazy vals. It make sense. But I've bumped on use case, where I'd like to have similar capability. I need a lazy variable holder. It may be assigned a value that should be calculated by time-consuming algorithm. But it may be later reassigned to another value and I'd like not to call first value calculation at all. Example assuming there is some magic var definition lazy var value : Int = _ val calc1 : () => Int = ... // some calculation val calc2 : () => Int = ... // other calculation value = calc1 value = calc2 val result : Int = value + 1 This piece of code should only call calc2(), not calc1 I have an idea how I can write this container with implicit conversions and and special container class. I'm curios if is there any embedded scala feature that doesn't require me write unnecessary code
