• Alien deletes .deb when converting from .rpm

  I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. sudo alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically? • How can I write only to the stencil buffer in OpenGL ES 2.0?

  I'd like to write to the stencil buffer without incurring the cost of my expensive shaders. As I understand it, I write to the stencil buffer as a 'side effect' of rendering something. In this first pass where I write to the stencil buffer, I don't want to write anything to the color or depth buffer, and I definitely don't want to run through my lighting equations in my shaders. Do I need to create no-op shaders for this (and can I just discard fragments), or is there a better way to do this? As the title says, I'm using OpenGL ES 2.0. I haven't used the stencil buffer before, so if I seem to be misunderstanding something, feel free to be verbose.

It looks like it's perhaps a bug? or I don't know. I simply installed 32-bit version of Ubuntu in VirtualBox and converted package there.   I know what whoopsie is from the answers to What is the 'whoopsie' process and how can I remove it? I do not want to stop error reporting, as I think that error reporting is the minimum a user should do to try to help Ubuntu. But since the upgrade to 13.10, whoopsie has grown up quite chatty.   I want to add autorandr before kdm starts. Autorandr works well within KDE, however, in kdm I still have ugly 1024x768 resolution when my external monitor is connected. I tried adding autorandr --change to /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup: #! /bin/sh # Xsetup - run as root before the login dialog appears #xconsole -geometry 480x130-0-0 -notify -verbose -fn fixed -exitOnFail -file /dev/xconsole & /sbin/initctl -q emit login-session-start DISPLAY_MANAGER=kdm /usr/local/bin/autorandr --change >> /tmp/autorandr echo "Xsetup finished" >> /tmp/xsetup-finished A debug message in /tmp/xsetup-finished appears correctly. /tmp/autorandr is empty (so it seems autorandr runs without errors). I also tried to move autorandr --change line before /sbin/initctl -q emit login-session-start DISPLAY_MANAGER=kdm with no effect. P.S. Of course, autorandr profiles I created under KDE session, are in my home folder, but Xsetup script runs under root, so I created a symlink from my ~/.autorandr to /root/.autorandr.

• jungledisk fails with libnotify error

  Has anyone had success getting the jungledisk application to work under Ubuntu? I installed it from the .deb file provided by jungledisk. The install goes fine, but I can't get the "jungle disk desktop" app to launch. It appears in the dash search bar, but doesn't launch or do anything upon selecting it. When I try the command line, I get the following... $ jungledisk -V -f Verbose mode enabled Shutting down... $ I get something more interesting with the following command ... something about libnotify.so $ junglediskdesktop -V -f junglediskdesktop: error while loading shared libraries: libnotify.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Does anyone have suggestions for what to try?

It seems to me that problem in me and not in a library that I used(Swing). So, could you recommend me some books, tutorials or resources where I can find how to design gui programms? Emphasize that I'm interested in architecture and not in how to use components of some framework(which about 90% of tutorials that I've ever seen).

• Translating error messages from an external API?

  If I am localizing a piece of software that uses an external API, how should I handle error messages that originate in this API? I do not control the API, I only consume it. The error responses are not very structured: some contain error codes, some contain verbose details in the text, others almost nothing. Some errors can be fixed by the user (incorrect configuration), some are caused by the external service (server overload), some could be caused by a bug in my software (of course, this would be very unlikely...). I would like to provide a smooth experience to my end-users, so they know what went wrong and what they can do to fix it. What is the best strategy to use here? • How to see what's going on during shutdown

  Since a few weeks, Ubuntu freezes almost everytime when I shut it down. I know it because the shutdown animation stops and nothing is responsive: Ctrl+Alt+Del or AltGr+Syst+[r,e,i,s,u,b] don't make any difference. I have tried to look at various log files in /var/log but only INFO level message are logged. My hope to solve this problem would be to do a verbose shutdown, one where I could see what's going on, and so what's causing the problem, so I could start solving it. Therefore, as the title suggest it. Is there a way to see what's going on during shutdown? I could even go to the extreme of doing a step-by-step shutdown if this is the only way. Thanks for any tips.

When I run package --extras on a clean template it runs fine. soundboardconfig.py is an unmodified appnameconfig.py the template makes. I'm not sure if my full source code is needed for this or not, but can be provided. EDIT: Forgot to mention quickly package creates a working package, only --extras fails.

• Choppy video in vlc even with hardware acceleration on ATI Radeon HD

  After installing Catalyst 11.12 and studying instructions (1, 2) to enable hardware acceleration I ended up with the following command: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 vainfo && \ vainfo && \ vlc --verbose 2 --ffmpeg-hw video.1080p.x264.mkv The output confirms that it's using the VA API: avcodec decoder: Using VA API version 0.32 for hardware decoding. But even after a reboot the video still looks choppy. There's no vlc output to indicate that the codec is having trouble, or that it's skipping frames. Any idea what could be the problem? Using vlc 1.1.12 with default settings. Also tried (in sequence): sudo apt-get install libva-glx1 sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core Rebooting No luck yet. Specs from /proc/cpuinfo : Intel Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz

• Evolution has no access to couchdb

  Evolution gives the error "Cannot open addressbook". "We were unable to open this addressbook. This either means you have entered an incorrect URI, or the server is unreachable". "Details: Operation not permitted". (rough translation from Dutch). Enabling verbose logging in (desktop)couchdb tells me roughly the same: [info] [<0.7875.1>] 127.0.0.1 - - 'PUT' /contacts/ 400 [debug] [<0.7875.1>] httpd 400 error response: {"error":"invalid_consumer","reason":"Invalid consumer (key or signature method)."} It seems that evolution tries to fetch the contacts, then couchdb denies access, and then evolution fails to do a proper oauth. This is on Ubuntu 10.10, with its default dektopcouch 1.0.1. Any hints on where to start would be most appreciated :)

  It's been generally accepted in the OO community that one should "favor composition over inheritance". On the other hand, inheritance does provide both polymorphism and a straightforward, terse way of delegating everything to a base class unless explicitly overridden and is therefore extremely convenient and useful. Delegation can often (though not always) be verbose and brittle. The most obvious and IMHO surest sign of inheritance abuse is violation of the Liskov Substitution Principle. What are some other signs that inheritance is The Wrong Tool for the Job even if it seems convenient?

• Cannot boot Win7 after updating to ubuntu 11.10

  I had a dual boot setup on my system, with ubuntu 11.04 and Win7. Yesterday I updated ubuntu to 11.10. Now , I cannot seem to be able to load Win7 , I do see an entry for it on the boot menu. I select that entry and then the screen goes black , with everything coming to a standstill. I tried to wait for it to respond but nothing happened. I went through the forums and tried "grub-update" but when I do that , nothing really happens. I am not sure of this , but I get no output from grub for upto 10 minutes ( can grub-update be made verbose ) How can I fix this and get back to booting both OS'es properly ?

  I am writing a bet settling win forms app in c#.So, I have 6 selections, 4 of them have won. I know that using the following formula =FACT(selections)/(FACT(selections-doubles))/FACT(doubles) - taken from excel but now coded into my app and working well- I can work out how many possible doubles ie AB, AC,AD,AE, BC,BD,BE, etc need to be resolved. But what I can't figure out is how to do the acutal calculation. Ie, how can I efficiently code it so that every combination A B C D has been calculated? All my efforts thus far on paper have proved to be ugly and verbose, and I was wondering if anyone could come up with an elegant solution? Ty for all and any help.

• Consistency vs. Usability?

  When designing an API, consistency often aids usability. However, sometimes they conflict where an extra API feature can be added to streamline a common case. It seems like there's somewhat of a divide over what to do here. Some designs (the Java standard library come to mind) favor consistency even if it makes common cases more verbose. Others (the Python standard library comes to mind) favor usability even if it means treating the common case as "special" to make it easier. What is your opinion on how consistency and usability should be balanced?

I: Extracting xz-utils... I: Extracting zlib1g... W: Failure trying to run: chroot /tmp/tmp_JdKzu mount -t proc proc /proc , stderr: The host kernel is not original but modified by server provider. Why is the chroot needed for installation?

• Clarify the Single Responsibility Principle.

  The Single Responsibility Principle states that a class should do one and only one thing. Some cases are pretty clear cut. Others, though, are difficult because what looks like "one thing" when viewed at a given level of abstraction may be multiple things when viewed at a lower level. I also fear that if the Single Responsibility Principle is honored at the lower levels, excessively decoupled, verbose ravioli code, where more lines are spent creating tiny classes for everything and plumbing information around than actually solving the problem at hand, can result. How would you describe what "one thing" means? What are some concrete signs that a class really does more than "one thing"?

• VirtualBox: Start Firefox in Ubuntu via a Windows script?

  I am using VirtualBox to run Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest in a Windows 7 host. I would like execute a command in Windows that will launch Ubuntu's Firefox. I tried VirtualBox's VBoxManage guestcontrol function. The command seems to do something, but nothing seems to happen in Ubuntu: C:\VirtualBox>VBoxManage.exe guestcontrol MyVirtualMachineUbuntu exec --image "/usr/bin/firefox" --username bob --password password --wait-stdout --verbose Waiting for guest to start process ... Waiting for process to exit ... Exit code=1 (Status=500 [successfully terminated]) The /usr/bin/firefox command works when I run it in Ubuntu. Also, with guestcontrol, I can successfully call /bin/ls. But I can't actually get a major program like Firefox to run. Any ideas? Thanks.
