  • Linux repository contains latest tools for synaptic

    I'm using backTrack5R3. And I 've installed Synaptic as well as ubuntu Software center. Synaptic is very easy to use and gives wide range of details for the packages that I'm going to download. But the problem is it lack of lot of new files and information. Like vlc or adobe reader. The latest stable version of vlc is 2.0. but synaptic only installs, 1.1. And it don't find adobe. I would like to get new versions of them. What is the best way/source to update new files? EDIT: I mean after performing update & upgrade synaptic still contains vlc 1.0.6 which is outdated. I'm looking for a way to get new/best source.

  • HDMI signal interrputs after 10 minutes plugged in a TV

    Ubuntu 11.10, Dell Inspiron N4050, VLC, Jupiter I'm trying to watch movies through HDMI output on a TV, with VLC, with the notebook unplugged from AC (but with enough battery for 2-3 hours of use), just with TV display (the notebook display stays off) And from 10 to 10 minutes, the TV turns black, and according to the TV, the HDMI cable is unplugged. But using the touchpad makes the screen appear again. In "screen" options, on system settings, i've set the screen to never turn off, and never reduce brightness using battery. In "power" settings, i've set to not suspend when using battery. In Jupiter, i've set (while trying to watch the movie) to work in maximum performance. I'm pretty sure it's not VLC, because i've set it to override power options and screensaver options (and also im not using xscreensaver). Also the movie continues, when the screen is black Maybe there's something that i'm missing? When i plug the HDMI in the notebook, i use jupiter to change the display (using the option "external display only")... maybe is that ?

  • What options can I use in totem, xine or vlc to play on machines with limited resources?

    Mplayer has some options that allow me to play it on a machine with limited resources. I can use mplayer -vo x11 -zoom -framedrop to play videos when otherwise I'd run out of memory. At least I think I'm running out of memory. I am running our of some resource for sure. -vo sets the video output driver -zoom actually I don't know what this does, but it works for me ;-) -framedrop allows mplayer to not render frames if it falls behind. Are there similar command line controls (or a defaults file) for totem, vlc or xine?

  • How to delete a file after vlc finishes playing it?

    I know you can have vlc shut down your pc after you finish playing something but I'm trying to figure out a way to delete the file, preferably with a confirmation dialog box after you finish playing something. Ideally it would only do this if the file was actually played to at least 90% of the file so as not to have unnecessary deletions but that may not be possible. Running a batch file to play the video would work, but it'd have to be something easy to do. Having to edit a batch file with the name of the video to play each time would get old fast. Any ideas?

  • How To Completely Disable Subtitles in VLC

    If you watch a lot of videos using VLC, you might have noticed that it enables subtitles by default if they are there, which can be pretty annoying at times. Here’s the quick tip to disable them entirely. Of course, you can always turn them back on if you want on an individual video basis. Disable Subtitles Head into the VLC preferences, and then click the All button at the bottom of the screen. On the left-hand side, choose Video –> Subtitles/OSD, and then uncheck the boxes for “Autodetect subtitle files”, Enable sub-pictures, and On Screen Display. That should do it, unless the subtitles are forced in the video for some reason. Note: Certain video formats like MKV can sometimes have subtitles enabled even though there isn’t a separate subtitles file. This is why you need to remove “Enable sub-pictures” as well, which totally disables the on-screen text. You can choose to only uncheck the autodetecting of subtitles instead if you’d prefer. And of course, you can simply right-click on the video, head to Video –> Subtitles Track and then choose the subtitles if you still wanted them. Note: this only works if the “enable sub-pictures” option is still enabled. And thus ends the tale of disabling those fracking subtitles. Starbuck approves.     I try to open an AVI file. The first software I tried is VLC media player. It reports some error about AVI index: This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try to fix it? This might take a long time. I chose yes, and it began fixing AVI index and existed when the repair progress bar reaches 20% or so. Then the video started playing and stopped much earlier than when it is supposed to finish. Next I tried to open it in Totem Movie Player, which also stopped earlier at the same place as in VLC player. I tried to play it in GMplayer. Now the entire AVI file can be played from start to finish, but it is impossible to drag playing progress bar while it was possible in VLC player and Totem player. I heard that Avidemux can fix AVI index error, but later discovered it failed to open the AVI file. So I was wondering how I can fix the AVI index error, or at least drag the playing progress bar in GMplayer? Thanks and regards!

  • Bash script runs fine, but not in cron

    I have a script that's supposed to record a shoutcast stream for an hour, convert it to mp3, and then save it. The script runs correctly when I run it from the terminal, but I can't seem to get it to run in cron (where it should run every hour at the top of the hour).   • Need advice on how to set up live video streaming to web/mobile devices

    I have a bunch of live udp video streams that currently are viewed by set top boxes in my network. I would like to pick this video up (I can do this with vlc now) and stream it out to other non-STB endpoints (webpage or a phone/tablet of some sort). Right now I am able to pick up the udp stream with vlc and convert it to an http stream on port 8080 of my vlc box. Then I can use the vlc client to pick up and watch that video stream. This is where I'm not sure where to go with it. I really doubt I would want everyone who is watching the video to make a connection back to my vlc server that is doing the encoding, so how do I distribute this live video to the people who want to see it?

    I'm considering my options for implementing a VOD service. Until recently my choices seemed to be either Wowza or Darwin, but now I discovered VLM, which looks really cool. I am going to stream MPEG4 H.264 video with AAC audio. I'm probably going to use the RTSP protocol, but I'm willing to use HTTP as well (after reading this article). Can anyone comment on his or her experiences with VLM? How does it compare to Darwin or Wowza? Is it stable and worthy of production use? Are there any limitations or performance problems?

    I'm currently developing a video player software which intended to be an embeedded player. I'm using Java with VLCJ library for the video player. What i'm looking is a way, something to transform the audio output to make the output sound as oldman or a kid (pitch shifting, i guess is the name). VLC have this when enabling time stretch, but the video play speed is affected (slower to get oldman sound, but fast-forward-alike to get kid voice effect. Is there any solutions for this? I don't find this feature on VLC(J), so i think what i need is the audio output of the ubuntu itself (Ubuntu 12.04) to do this job. something like filtering audio output system wide. Any software or setting to do this? it also need to be controllable via command line to provide realtime effect changing. Thanks in advance.

    I'm not sure if the mkv file is corrupted, but when it is opened with VLC player, VLC loads up and displays nothing. Can't even close VLC after that. And also, VLC is running with 50% of the CPU.   • Streaming audio from microphone to network

    I have the following problem: I want to stream the audio I record with one machine to another machine in the same network. It seems that vlc is the best shot at the moment. I was able to stream a music file via vlc but streaming the audio from the microphone the same doesn't work. EDIT If I enable play locally the captured sound is played. Even streaming to another instance of VLC on the same machine doesn't work.

Why does the following NOT work? $ cat myLoop.mpg > myPipe & < myPipe tee -a myPipe | vlc myPipe I'm primarily interested in re-writing the first statement to remove the improper "cat myLoop.mpg" statement. Will be inputting into VLC, or into FFMPEG and then piped into VLC.

  • Video lags/freezes in SMPlayer and VLC

    When I try to play my video files in SMPlayer it works fine but as soon as I switch to fullscreen mode(16:9) following thing happens: 1) Video starts lagging. 2) Audio and video goes out of sync. 3) CPU usage rises to ~50%. 4) SMPlayer starts to hang. My current SMPlayer configuration: 1)Video Output Driver = x11(slow) 2)Audio Output Driver = alsa(0.0-HDA Intel) 3)Cache = 8192 KB 4)Threads for decoding(MPEG-1/2 and H.264 only = 2 Things I tried solve this problem: 1) Tried changing video o/p driver to xv,gl. 2) Tried changing audio o/p driver to pulse. 3) Tried increasing cache size and also tried using nocache. Everything works fine on windows but I don't want to switch to windows just to play video files. My system config: Acer Aspire One D270 Atom N2600(Cedar Trail) 1.6GHz 2GB Memory Intel GMA 3600 graphics. Ubuntu 12.04 Kernel Release: 3.2.0-23-generic-pae Rest all things are working fine I have no resolution issue, bluetooth, wireless also working fine.     Please help I installed Ubuntu11.10 32bit in an IBMTP41 notebook, that is NOT connected to the internet, tried running video files such as .mp4,.flv,.avi,.Xvid, in Movie Player but it asks for plugins, see the list below mp4: MPEG-4 AAC decoder; H.264 decoder flv: SorensonSpark Video decoder; MPEG-1 Layer3(MP3) decoder avi: MPEG-1 Layer3 (MP3) decoder; MPEG video decoder XviD: AC-3 (ATSC A/52) decoder; XviD MPEG-4 decoder how do i donwload (from another computer with internet) and install all these plugins and their dependencies. I also want to install the VLC Media player and its dependencies I assume this is related to the restricted codecs and I have tried donwnload/install them with no success. I'll appreciate all ur help
