  • SSL in IIS 7 on a subdomain in a web farm

    I have been having one of the most frustrating days in my entire IT career. I am trying to install an SSL certificate on a subdomain in a web farm. http://shop.mydomain.com needs to ALWAYS be forced to https://shop.mydomain.com I have a temporary cert issued from verisign on shop.mydomain.com I have installed the cert on the server. The website for shop.mydomain.com is set as a host header in IIS with the DNS entry pointed to the same IP as mydomain.com - which is our load balancer. I actually have 2 load balancers (as needed by our ISP). One redirects all traffic on port 80 out to the different servers on port 80. The other pushes out port 443 to the servers on port 443. shop.mydomain.com is to be the only site protected by SSL at this time. When I add the binding and I navigate to https://shop.mydomain.com it pops up with a warning about the cert being invalid (assumed because this is a test cert), and then it sends the user to http. So, I checked the box "Require SSL and it redirects to http://shop.mydomain.com/default.aspx and displayes an ASP.NET 404 error message. (not the IIS 404 error) I tried removing the binding on the site to port 80 as well with no luck. I am nearly ready to crawl under my desk into the fetal position. How on earth do I make this work? I can't even get it to work on one machine, let alone in the load balanced environment.

    I'm trying to bind a IIS web site (Team Foundation Services 2010) to a subdomain, which is causing authentication errors. First I'll explain what I've done to set it up. This is the fist time I do this, so please correct me if I'm wrong. The web server is a stand-alone Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, running IIS7 with .NET Framework 4. I have the following A-records, pointing to my server: server.mydomain.com *.server.mydomain.com So all subdomains of server.mydomain.com points to the server. In IIS7 I have a web site (TFS 2010) on port 8080, with a virtual directory (named tfs) that is using Windows Authentication. I have one binding on the web site pointing to all unassigned IP addresses, port 8080 and having a host name of tfs.server.mydomain.com. Now, shouldn't I be able to access the virtual directory through: http://tfs.server.mydomain.com/tfs That is not working. However, I can access it through: http://tfs.server.mydomain.com:8080/tfs But, it won't let me authenticate using a Windows account (Server\Username). A windows account that I can authenticate with, when accessing the site through http://localhost:8080/tfs. What am I missing here?

The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. Reason: Error reading from remote server Could anybody share some insight on what I may be doing wrong and what the best possible solution would be to fix this? Thanks.

  • Redirecting a single request to another pages, ignoring www subdomain

    I have a site running on IIS 7.5 that does an automatic redirect from 'http://mysite.com/whatever.aspx' to 'http://www.mysite.com/whatever.aspx' On the site, there is a lot of traffic to an old URL that I want to redirect to the front page, index.aspx: 'http://mysite.com/foo/bar/index.cgi%something=asdf&somethingelse=qwerty' The problem is that no matter what I try, I can only get the redirect to work with the www subdomain. If I use the URL without www, I just end up at 'http://www.mysite.com/404.aspx' Any ideas? Thanks in advance for all help! Edit3: it seems like the browser caching the redirect response was messing with me, so edit2 is wrong. See my response below. Edit2: disregard edit1, it doesn't seem like it's working after all. Edit: here's some further info: using this article I've managed to redirect from 'http://mysite.com/foo/bar/index.cgi' to 'http://www.mysite.com/index.aspx', but if I add the query string parameters, it still redirects to 'http://www.mysite.com/404.aspx' Isn't there a way to catch all requests to the cgi file, including query string parameters?

  • Set document root for external subdomain (A Record) via htaccess

    I have a managed server (unable to control apache settings) with the default document root of: /var/www I have a web app running in: /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot I have a dedicated domain managed by the host that has the aforementioned webroot which works perfectly. I would like to allow externally provisioned domains to point to the server/web app via A Record config. If I access the site via IP, it takes me to the index located in /var/www. I would like to configure the .htaccess in my /var/www directory to rewrite requests from the external subdomain to the /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot directory. I've done so using the following rules: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} external\.domain\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot/index.php?url=$1 [L,QSA] When accessing external.domain.com, the app loads properly, but the paths to things like CSS files, images, etc. are prefixed with "/subdomains/app/", causing broken links. I've tried changing the RewriteBase (both in /var/www and /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot), as I believe that's what it's designed for - but no luck. Any ideas? FYI the app is built on CakePHP.   • Controlling shell command line wildcard expansion in C or C++

    I'm writing a program, foo, in C++. It's typically invoked on the command line like this: foo *.txt My main() receives the arguments in the normal way. On many systems, argv[1] is literally *.txt, and I have to call system routines to do the wildcard expansion. On Unix systems, however, the shell expands the wildcard before invoking my program, and all of the matching filenames will be in argv. Suppose I wanted to add a switch to foo that causes it to recurse into subdirectories. foo -a *.txt would process all text files in the current directory and all of its subdirectories. I don't see how this is done, since, by the time my program gets a chance to see the -a, then shell has already done the expansion and the user's *.txt input is lost. Yet there are common Unix programs that work this way. How do they do it? In Unix land, how can I control the wildcard expansion? (Recursing through subdirectories is just one example. Ideally, I'm trying to understand the general solution to controlling the wildcard expansion.)

    Hi Gents, I'm looking to set up a wildcard cname on a FQDN but cant seem to get it to work. This is what i'm trying to achive: A Record : domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 A Record : en.domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 cname : www.*.en.domain.co.uk : --> uk.domain.co.uk I'm reasonably new to all this kind of thing, so it's pretty probably pretty straight forward. The number of sites forbids the use of multiple IP addresses. Thanks for any assistance.

As you can see from apache2ctl when I use happyslice.net I get the default virtual host, when I use a subdomain, I get the happyslice.net host. So the later is working how I want, but the main url does not. I've tried all kinds of variations here, but it appears that ServerName just isn't being tied to the correct location. Thoughts? I'm stumped. FYI, I'm running Apache2.1 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

    I am creating a site with quite a few services, such as a free account service, and of course a subdomain for my site's blog and then for article base and other related services, would having them all on subdomains be a good idea? Are there any caveats you are aware of in existing search engines for this? I believe mapping foo.example.com to example.com/foo to provide an alternative just in case is a good idea for sitemaps, I like to keep things clean.

  • HTTPS in sub domain redirects to main domain

    We recently bought a wildcard certificate and installed it for a domain. It works fine for the main domain but seems to not work at all for any sub domains. Whats happening is we can access the sub domains fine on HTTP, but whenever we try HTTPS for the same sub domain url we are redirected back to the main domain. So if I put up a test folder "httpstest" in a sub domain with a index.html file in it, the following happens mysubdomain.mywebsite.com/httpstest/index.html or mysubdomain.mywebsite.com/httpstest/ works perfectly fine with http:// but mysubdomain.mywebsite.com/httpstest/ or mysubdomain.mywebsite.com/httpstest/index.html does not work with https:// and redirects to the main domain.Any help on this is greatly appreciated. The site is not the main site used for setting up the VPS. It was added from WHM. Environment: We are on a Linux VPS.     Hi, I have deployed my application on subdomain.domain.com (it works only on that one subdomain). Everything works fine except the fact that from time to time users cannot log in to application (the message "Looks like your browser isn't configured to accept cookies. Please enable cookies, reload this page, and try again" is shown when trying to log into admin panel). I've noticed that restarting the web server eliminates this problem for some time. Does anyone have experience with setting up django project on subdomain and can guide me how to configure my application to make it work correctly without need to ocasionally make reset?

    Hi, I have a website let's say www.example.com and I have a subdomain something.example.com Both main domain and sub domain are pointing to directory "public_html" I have .htaccess on root which redirects any URL without www to www. For e.g. if user enters example.com then he will be redirected to www.example.com If user enters example.com/mypage.html then he will be redirected to www.example.com/mypage.html Now the problem is this is also affecting my subdomain. Because if someone enters something.example.com/visit.html then he is redirect to www.example.com/visit.html I don't want this! If user enters subdomain then I don't want to redirected to www domain. This is what I have in my .htacces file RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.stackoverflow.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.stackoverflow.com/$1 [R=301,L] Can you please tell me what should I do to solve above problem?   • Wordpress htaccess in root overriding htaccess in subdomain. Subdomain app not working now.

    Hello, We have a WP install in the root of our server and its running great.. but, we just installed another app in a subdomain. Now, I can view the index.php of that app but cannot do anything with it.. the htaccess rules in the root (from WP base install) are effecting the requests. So, how to I eliminate the WP htaccess file from effecting the subdomain?     Hello. I am developing a pretty large website for a client, and its about 90% complete. It is currently hosted on a subdomain like so: now: v2.websitehere.com when complete: www.websitehere.com My problem is that SO much of this site is linked to the temporary subdomain. The newsletter service, multiple google apis, etc. I also have multiple blogs installed that would be hard to move over. Literally, I have over 20 blogs hosted on the subdomain. I also have other PHP scripts that utilize SQL databases. So, what I am getting at is that a migration would be very difficult: time consuming, frustrating, and not something I want to do. I am looking for a a good solution...similar to Wordpress's URL rewriting. Is there something I can do with .htaccess file? Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

    I'm using the vhost express/connect middleware and I'm a bit confused as to how it should be used. I want to have one set of routes apply to hosts with subdomains, and another set to apply for hosts without subdomains. In my app.js file, I have var app = express.createServer(); app.use...(middlware)... app.use(express.vhost('*.host', require('./domain_routing')("yes")); app.use(express.vhost('host', require('./domain_routing')("no")); app.use...(middlware)... app.listen(8000); and then in domain_routing.js: module.exports = function(subdomain){ var app = express.createServer(); require('./routes')(app, subdomain); return app; } and then in routes.js I plan to run sets of routes, dependent on the subdomain variable passed in is "yes" or "no". Am I on the right track or is this not how you use this middleware?

  • Virtualhost entries gets over-written when apache httpd.conf is rebuilt

    Background: We have been trying to get a wildcard SSL working on multiple sub domains on a single dedicated address.. We have two sub domains next.my-personal-website.com and blog.my-personal-website.com Part of our strategy has been to edit the httpd.conf and add the NameVirtualHost xx.xx.144.72:443 directive and the virtualhost entries for port 443 for the subdomains there. This works good if we just edit the httpd.conf, add the entries, save it and restart the apache. The problem: But if we add a new sub domain from cpanel or we run the # /usr/local/cpanel/bin/apache_conf_distiller --update # /scripts/rebuildhttpdconf the virtualhost entries that we added manually are no more there in the newly generated httpd.conf file. Only the virtualhost entry for the main domain for port 443 that was there before we made edits to the httpd.conf is there(assuming we are not discussing virtualhost entries for port 80). I understand we need to put the new virtualhost entries in some include files as mentioned here in the cpanel documentation. But am not sure where to. So the question would be where do I put the NameVirtualHost xx.xx.144.72:443 directive and the two virtualhost directive for port 443, so that they are not overwritten when httpd.conf is rebuilt/regenerated later.   • Subdomain on a separate server (Windows/IIS) won't load default web site?

    I've got a domain hosted under godaddy.com. I set it up so that subdomain.mysite.com points to a different server which uses Windows/IIS (say for example ip 1.1.1.1). When I go to the subdomain I get no errors, but no webpage loads. In IIS under the default website I added a bindings for subdomain.mysite.com with the ip of 1.1.1.1, but still nothing loads, just a totally blank page. I know for sure the subdomain host is working correctly because when I ping my subdomain, the correct IP shows. What am I missing to get this working?

    I have a full-blown site like: http://www.example.com (uses index.php) http://www.example.com/scriptA.php http://www.example.com/scriptB.php I now want to have the possibility of setting up subsites like: http://alpha.example.com http://alpha.example.com/scriptA.php http://alpha.example.com/scriptB.php From http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2844004/subdomain-url-rewriting-and-web-apps/2844033#2844033 , I understand that I have to do: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^./]+)\.example\.com$ RewriteCond %1 !=www RewriteRule ^ index.php?domain=%1 But what about the other scripts like scriptA and scriptB? How do I tell httpd.conf to handle those properly as well?     I have a web application that needs to support custom domains, in that regard I have set-up the following name based virtual server: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias * *.example.com www.example.com example.com RailsEnv production RackEnv production DocumentRoot /srv/www/example/current/public <Directory /srv/www/example/current/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews FollowSymLinks </Directory> ErrorLog /srv/www/example/log/error.log TransferLog /srv/www/example/log/access.log </VirtualHost> Notice the * as the server alias? that catches all the domains on that server. However, I have other sites on this server which I want to be excluded from this list. It is more economical for me to have a list of excluded domains than manually set every domain a user may register with at this service as a serverAlias... Perhaps this is not the best way to go, but I'm looking for help, in the best (relatively simple) way to set up a web-app that may catch any domains, while allowing other specific domains to be routed to different apps.
