  • How to avoid avoid linebreaks and spaces for XmlWellFormedWriter

    - by user302670
    Hi, i am getting an XmlWriter of the AppendChild() method of a xPathNavigator. using (XmlWriter writer = xPathNavigator.AppendChild()) { writer.WriteStartAttribute("name"); writer.WriteEndElement(); } The AppendChild() method returns a instance of XmlWellFormedWriter. I want to avoid linebreaks and spaces in my output xml. But the XmlWriterSettings are readonly and using an wrapper does not help anything. I tried this, but the setting of nether the wrapper nor the writer changes: XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings(); settings.IndentChars = ""; settings.NewLineChars = ""; using (XmlWriter wrapper = xPathNavigator.AppendChild()) { XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(writer, settings); writer.WriteStartAttribute("name"); writer.WriteEndElement(); } Does anybody has an idea what todo? Thanks!

  • ASP.NET CompositeControl with child controls that contain children

    - by tomfanning
    I am building an ASP.NET server control which extends CompositeControl. I need fine grained control over the rendering, so I override Render() and output the child controls myself, interspersed with HTML generation code: writer.AddStyleAttribute("float", "left"); writer.RenderBeginTag(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriterTag.Div); writer.RenderBeginTag(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriterTag.Strong); writer.Write("Table"); writer.RenderEndTag(); // strong writer.WriteBreak(); tableList.RenderControl(writer); writer.RenderEndTag(); // div This works really well for user controls that just contain simple controls without children of their own. However, if I want to use something like a MultiView or an UpdatePanel I run into problems, since I can't override Render() on View or UpdatePanel without extending them, and if I do extend them the implementation would presumably have to depend on FindControl() voodoo to get references to the right controls during render. That doesn't sound like the right way to do this - is there a better way?

  • Writing to an already existing file using FileWriter Java

    - by delo
    Is there anyway I can write to an already existing file using Filewriter For example when the user clicks a submit button: FileWriter writer = new FileWriter("myfile.csv"); writer.append("LastName"); writer.append(','); writer.append("FirstName"); writer.append('/n'); writer.append(LastNameTextField.getText()); writer.append(','); writer.append(FirstNameTextField.getText()); I want to be able to write new data into the already existing myfile.csv without having to recreate a brand new one every time

  • ViewContext.Writer() doesn't exist in ASP.NET MVC 1.0?

    - by DaveDev
    I have the following code in an ASP.NET MVC 2 application. internal TextWriter _writer; // some stuff _writer = _viewContext.Writer; _writer.Write(_tag.ToString(TagRenderMode.EndTag)); I tried to move it to MVC 1 and now it doesn't build any more. I'm getting this error: 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewContext' does not contain a definition for 'Writer' Can someone point out how I can resolve this?

  • An Xml Serializable PropertyBag Dictionary Class for .NET

    - by Rick Strahl
    I don't know about you but I frequently need property bags in my applications to store and possibly cache arbitrary data. Dictionary<T,V> works well for this although I always seem to be hunting for a more specific generic type that provides a string key based dictionary. There's string dictionary, but it only works with strings. There's Hashset<T> but it uses the actual values as keys. In most key value pair situations for me string is key value to work off. Dictionary<T,V> works well enough, but there are some issues with serialization of dictionaries in .NET. The .NET framework doesn't do well serializing IDictionary objects out of the box. The XmlSerializer doesn't support serialization of IDictionary via it's default serialization, and while the DataContractSerializer does support IDictionary serialization it produces some pretty atrocious XML. What doesn't work? First off Dictionary serialization with the Xml Serializer doesn't work so the following fails: [TestMethod] public void DictionaryXmlSerializerTest() { var bag = new Dictionary<string, object>(); bag.Add("key", "Value"); bag.Add("Key2", 100.10M); bag.Add("Key3", Guid.NewGuid()); bag.Add("Key4", DateTime.Now); bag.Add("Key5", true); bag.Add("Key7", new byte[3] { 42, 45, 66 }); TestContext.WriteLine(this.ToXml(bag)); } public string ToXml(object obj) { if (obj == null) return null; StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(); XmlSerializer ser = new XmlSerializer(obj.GetType()); ser.Serialize(sw, obj); return sw.ToString(); } The error you get with this is: System.NotSupportedException: The type System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2[[System.String, mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089],[System.Object, mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089]] is not supported because it implements IDictionary. Got it! BTW, the same is true with binary serialization. Running the same code above against the DataContractSerializer does work: [TestMethod] public void DictionaryDataContextSerializerTest() { var bag = new Dictionary<string, object>(); bag.Add("key", "Value"); bag.Add("Key2", 100.10M); bag.Add("Key3", Guid.NewGuid()); bag.Add("Key4", DateTime.Now); bag.Add("Key5", true); bag.Add("Key7", new byte[3] { 42, 45, 66 }); TestContext.WriteLine(this.ToXmlDcs(bag)); } public string ToXmlDcs(object value, bool throwExceptions = false) { var ser = new DataContractSerializer(value.GetType(), null, int.MaxValue, true, false, null); MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(); ser.WriteObject(ms, value); return Encoding.UTF8.GetString(ms.ToArray(), 0, (int)ms.Length); } This DOES work but produces some pretty heinous XML (formatted with line breaks and indentation here): <ArrayOfKeyValueOfstringanyType xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/Arrays" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>key</Key> <Value i:type="a:string" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">Value</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>Key2</Key> <Value i:type="a:decimal" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">100.10</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>Key3</Key> <Value i:type="a:guid" xmlns:a="http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/">2cd46d2a-a636-4af4-979b-e834d39b6d37</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>Key4</Key> <Value i:type="a:dateTime" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">2011-09-19T17:17:05.4406999-07:00</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>Key5</Key> <Value i:type="a:boolean" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">true</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> <KeyValueOfstringanyType> <Key>Key7</Key> <Value i:type="a:base64Binary" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">Ki1C</Value> </KeyValueOfstringanyType> </ArrayOfKeyValueOfstringanyType> Ouch! That seriously hurts the eye! :-) Worse though it's extremely verbose with all those repetitive namespace declarations. It's good to know that it works in a pinch, but for a human readable/editable solution or something lightweight to store in a database it's not quite ideal. Why should I care? As a little background, in one of my applications I have a need for a flexible property bag that is used on a free form database field on an otherwise static entity. Basically what I have is a standard database record to which arbitrary properties can be added in an XML based string field. I intend to expose those arbitrary properties as a collection from field data stored in XML. The concept is pretty simple: When loading write the data to the collection, when the data is saved serialize the data into an XML string and store it into the database. When reading the data pick up the XML and if the collection on the entity is accessed automatically deserialize the XML into the Dictionary. (I'll talk more about this in another post). While the DataContext Serializer would work, it's verbosity is problematic both for size of the generated XML strings and the fact that users can manually edit this XML based property data in an advanced mode. A clean(er) layout certainly would be preferable and more user friendly. Custom XMLSerialization with a PropertyBag Class So… after a bunch of experimentation with different serialization formats I decided to create a custom PropertyBag class that provides for a serializable Dictionary. It's basically a custom Dictionary<TType,TValue> implementation with the keys always set as string keys. The result are PropertyBag<TValue> and PropertyBag (which defaults to the object type for values). The PropertyBag<TType> and PropertyBag classes provide these features: Subclassed from Dictionary<T,V> Implements IXmlSerializable with a cleanish XML format ToXml() and FromXml() methods to export and import to and from XML strings Static CreateFromXml() method to create an instance It's simple enough as it's merely a Dictionary<string,object> subclass but that supports serialization to a - what I think at least - cleaner XML format. The class is super simple to use: [TestMethod] public void PropertyBagTwoWayObjectSerializationTest() { var bag = new PropertyBag(); bag.Add("key", "Value"); bag.Add("Key2", 100.10M); bag.Add("Key3", Guid.NewGuid()); bag.Add("Key4", DateTime.Now); bag.Add("Key5", true); bag.Add("Key7", new byte[3] { 42,45,66 } ); bag.Add("Key8", null); bag.Add("Key9", new ComplexObject() { Name = "Rick", Entered = DateTime.Now, Count = 10 }); string xml = bag.ToXml(); TestContext.WriteLine(bag.ToXml()); bag.Clear(); bag.FromXml(xml); Assert.IsTrue(bag["key"] as string == "Value"); Assert.IsInstanceOfType( bag["Key3"], typeof(Guid)); Assert.IsNull(bag["Key8"]); //Assert.IsNull(bag["Key10"]); Assert.IsInstanceOfType(bag["Key9"], typeof(ComplexObject)); } This uses the PropertyBag class which uses a PropertyBag<string,object> - which means it returns untyped values of type object. I suspect for me this will be the most common scenario as I'd want to store arbitrary values in the PropertyBag rather than one specific type. The same code with a strongly typed PropertyBag<decimal> looks like this: [TestMethod] public void PropertyBagTwoWayValueTypeSerializationTest() { var bag = new PropertyBag<decimal>(); bag.Add("key", 10M); bag.Add("Key1", 100.10M); bag.Add("Key2", 200.10M); bag.Add("Key3", 300.10M); string xml = bag.ToXml(); TestContext.WriteLine(bag.ToXml()); bag.Clear(); bag.FromXml(xml); Assert.IsTrue(bag.Get("Key1") == 100.10M); Assert.IsTrue(bag.Get("Key3") == 300.10M); } and produces typed results of type decimal. The types can be either value or reference types the combination of which actually proved to be a little more tricky than anticipated due to null and specific string value checks required - getting the generic typing right required use of default(T) and Convert.ChangeType() to trick the compiler into playing nice. Of course the whole raison d'etre for this class is the XML serialization. You can see in the code above that we're doing a .ToXml() and .FromXml() to serialize to and from string. The XML produced for the first example looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <properties> <item> <key>key</key> <value>Value</value> </item> <item> <key>Key2</key> <value type="decimal">100.10</value> </item> <item> <key>Key3</key> <value type="___System.Guid"> <guid>f7a92032-0c6d-4e9d-9950-b15ff7cd207d</guid> </value> </item> <item> <key>Key4</key> <value type="datetime">2011-09-26T17:45:58.5789578-10:00</value> </item> <item> <key>Key5</key> <value type="boolean">true</value> </item> <item> <key>Key7</key> <value type="base64Binary">Ki1C</value> </item> <item> <key>Key8</key> <value type="nil" /> </item> <item> <key>Key9</key> <value type="___Westwind.Tools.Tests.PropertyBagTest+ComplexObject"> <ComplexObject> <Name>Rick</Name> <Entered>2011-09-26T17:45:58.5789578-10:00</Entered> <Count>10</Count> </ComplexObject> </value> </item> </properties>   The format is a bit cleaner than the DataContractSerializer. Each item is serialized into <key> <value> pairs. If the value is a string no type information is written. Since string tends to be the most common type this saves space and serialization processing. All other types are attributed. Simple types are mapped to XML types so things like decimal, datetime, boolean and base64Binary are encoded using their Xml type values. All other types are embedded with a hokey format that describes the .NET type preceded by a three underscores and then are encoded using the XmlSerializer. You can see this best above in the ComplexObject encoding. For custom types this isn't pretty either, but it's more concise than the DCS and it works as long as you're serializing back and forth between .NET clients at least. The XML generated from the second example that uses PropertyBag<decimal> looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <properties> <item> <key>key</key> <value type="decimal">10</value> </item> <item> <key>Key1</key> <value type="decimal">100.10</value> </item> <item> <key>Key2</key> <value type="decimal">200.10</value> </item> <item> <key>Key3</key> <value type="decimal">300.10</value> </item> </properties>   How does it work As I mentioned there's nothing fancy about this solution - it's little more than a subclass of Dictionary<T,V> that implements custom Xml Serialization and a couple of helper methods that facilitate getting the XML in and out of the class more easily. But it's proven very handy for a number of projects for me where dynamic data storage is required. Here's the code: /// <summary> /// Creates a serializable string/object dictionary that is XML serializable /// Encodes keys as element names and values as simple values with a type /// attribute that contains an XML type name. Complex names encode the type /// name with type='___namespace.classname' format followed by a standard xml /// serialized format. The code implements ReadXml and WriteXml for the IXmlSerializable implementation using old school XmlReaders and XmlWriters (because it's pretty simple stuff - no need for XLinq here). Then there are two helper methods .ToXml() and .FromXml() that basically allow your code to easily convert between XML and a PropertyBag object. In my code that's what I use to actually to persist to and from the entity XML property during .Load() and .Save() operations. It's sweet to be able to have a string key dictionary and then be able to turn around with 1 line of code to persist the whole thing to XML and back. Hopefully some of you will find this class as useful as I've found it. It's a simple solution to a common requirement in my applications and I've used the hell out of it in the  short time since I created it. Resources You can find the complete code for the two classes plus the helpers in the Subversion repository for Westwind.Utilities. You can grab the source files from there or download the whole project. You can also grab the full Westwind.Utilities assembly from NuGet and add it to your project if that's easier for you. • Dependency Injection Introduction

    - by MarkPearl
    I recently was going over a great book called “Dependency Injection in .Net” by Mark Seeman. So far I have really enjoyed the book and would recommend anyone looking to get into DI to give it a read. Today I thought I would blog about the first example Mark gives in his book to illustrate some of the benefits that DI provides. The ones he lists are Late binding Extensibility Parallel Development Maintainability Testability To illustrate some of these benefits he gives a HelloWorld example using DI that illustrates some of the basic principles. It goes something like this… class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var writer = new ConsoleMessageWriter(); var salutation = new Salutation(writer); salutation.Exclaim(); Console.ReadLine(); } } public interface IMessageWriter { void Write(string message); } public class ConsoleMessageWriter : IMessageWriter { public void Write(string message) { Console.WriteLine(message); } } public class Salutation { private readonly IMessageWriter _writer; public Salutation(IMessageWriter writer) { _writer = writer; } public void Exclaim() { _writer.Write("Hello World"); } }   If you had asked me a few years ago if I had thought this was a good approach to solving the HelloWorld problem I would have resounded “No”. How could the above be better than the following…. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Hello World"); Console.ReadLine(); } }  Today, my mind-set has changed because of the pain of past programs. So often we can look at a small snippet of code and make judgements when we need to keep in mind that we will most probably be implementing these patterns in projects with hundreds of thousands of lines of code and in projects that we have tests that we don’t want to break and that’s where the first solution outshines the latter. Let’s see if the first example achieves some of the outcomes that were listed as benefits of DI. Could I test the first solution easily? Yes… We could write something like the following using NUnit and RhinoMocks… [TestFixture] public class SalutationTests { [Test] public void ExclaimWillWriteCorrectMessageToMessageWriter() { var writerMock = MockRepository.GenerateMock<IMessageWriter>(); var sut = new Salutation(writerMock); sut.Exclaim(); writerMock.AssertWasCalled(x => x.Write("Hello World")); } }   This would test the existing code fine. Let’s say we then wanted to extend the original solution so that we had a secure message writer. We could write a class like the following… public class SecureMessageWriter : IMessageWriter { private readonly IMessageWriter _writer; private readonly string _secretPassword; public SecureMessageWriter(IMessageWriter writer, string secretPassword) { _writer = writer; _secretPassword = secretPassword; } public void Write(string message) { if (_secretPassword == "Mark") { _writer.Write(message); } else { _writer.Write("Unauthenticated"); } } }   And then extend our implementation of the program as follows… class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var writer = new SecureMessageWriter(new ConsoleMessageWriter(), "Mark"); var salutation = new Salutation(writer); salutation.Exclaim(); Console.ReadLine(); } }   Our application has now been successfully extended and yet we did very little code change. In addition, our existing tests did not break and we would just need add tests for the extended functionality. Would this approach allow parallel development? Well, I am in two camps on parallel development but with some planning ahead of time it would allow for it as you would simply need to decide on the interface signature and could then have teams develop different sections programming to that interface. So,this was really just a quick intro to some of the basic concepts of DI that Mark introduces very successfully in his book. I am hoping to blog about this further as I continue through the book to list some of the more complex implementations of containers.

  • IXmlSerializable Dictionary

    - by Shimmy
    I was trying to create a generic Dictionary that implements IXmlSerializable. Here is my trial: Sub Main() Dim z As New SerializableDictionary(Of String, String) z.Add("asdf", "asd") Console.WriteLine(z.Serialize) End Sub Result: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><Entry key="asdf" value="asd" /> I placed a breakpoint on top of the WriteXml method and I see that when it stops, the writer contains no data at all, and IMHO it should contain the root element and the xml declaration. <Serializable()> _ Public Class SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue) : Inherits Dictionary(Of TKey, TValue) : Implements IXmlSerializable Private Const EntryString As String = "Entry" Private Const KeyString As String = "key" Private Const ValueString As String = "value" Private Shared ReadOnly AttributableTypes As Type() = New Type() {GetType(Boolean), GetType(Byte), GetType(Char), GetType(DateTime), GetType(Decimal), GetType(Double), GetType([Enum]), GetType(Guid), GetType(Int16), GetType(Int32), GetType(Int64), GetType(SByte), GetType(Single), GetType(String), GetType(TimeSpan), GetType(UInt16), GetType(UInt32), GetType(UInt64)} Private Shared ReadOnly GetIsAttributable As Predicate(Of Type) = Function(t) AttributableTypes.Contains(t) Private Shared ReadOnly IsKeyAttributable As Boolean = GetIsAttributable(GetType(TKey)) Private Shared ReadOnly IsValueAttributable As Boolean = GetIsAttributable(GetType(TValue)) Private Shared ReadOnly GetElementName As Func(Of Boolean, String) = Function(isKey) If(isKey, KeyString, ValueString) Public Function GetSchema() As System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema Implements System.Xml.Serialization.IXmlSerializable.GetSchema Return Nothing End Function Public Sub WriteXml(ByVal writer As XmlWriter) Implements IXmlSerializable.WriteXml For Each entry In Me writer.WriteStartElement(EntryString) WriteData(IsKeyAttributable, writer, True, entry.Key) WriteData(IsValueAttributable, writer, False, entry.Value) writer.WriteEndElement() Next End Sub Private Sub WriteData(Of T)(ByVal attributable As Boolean, ByVal writer As XmlWriter, ByVal isKey As Boolean, ByVal value As T) Dim name = GetElementName(isKey) If attributable Then writer.WriteAttributeString(name, value.ToString) Else Dim serializer As New XmlSerializer(GetType(T)) writer.WriteStartElement(name) serializer.Serialize(writer, value) writer.WriteEndElement() End If End Sub Public Sub ReadXml(ByVal reader As XmlReader) Implements IXmlSerializable.ReadXml Dim empty = reader.IsEmptyElement reader.Read() If empty Then Exit Sub Clear() While reader.NodeType <> XmlNodeType.EndElement While reader.NodeType = XmlNodeType.Whitespace reader.Read() Dim key = ReadData(Of TKey)(IsKeyAttributable, reader, True) Dim value = ReadData(Of TValue)(IsValueAttributable, reader, False) Add(key, value) If Not IsKeyAttributable AndAlso Not IsValueAttributable Then reader.ReadEndElement() Else reader.Read() While reader.NodeType = XmlNodeType.Whitespace reader.Read() End While End While reader.ReadEndElement() End While End Sub Private Function ReadData(Of T)(ByVal attributable As Boolean, ByVal reader As XmlReader, ByVal isKey As Boolean) As T Dim name = GetElementName(isKey) Dim type = GetType(T) If attributable Then Return Convert.ChangeType(reader.GetAttribute(name), type) Else Dim serializer As New XmlSerializer(type) While reader.Name <> name reader.Read() End While reader.ReadStartElement(name) Dim value = serializer.Deserialize(reader) reader.ReadEndElement() Return value End If End Function Public Shared Function Serialize(ByVal dictionary As SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue)) As String Dim sb As New StringBuilder(1024) Dim sw As New StringWriter(sb) Dim xs As New XmlSerializer(GetType(SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue))) xs.Serialize(sw, dictionary) sw.Dispose() Return sb.ToString End Function Public Shared Function Deserialize(ByVal xml As String) As SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue) Dim xs As New XmlSerializer(GetType(SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue))) Dim xr As New XmlTextReader(xml, XmlNodeType.Document, Nothing) Return xs.Deserialize(xr) xr.Close() End Function Public Function Serialize() As String Dim sb As New StringBuilder Dim xw = XmlWriter.Create(sb) WriteXml(xw) xw.Close() Return sb.ToString End Function Public Sub Parse(ByVal xml As String) Dim xr As New XmlTextReader(xml, XmlNodeType.Document, Nothing) ReadXml(xr) xr.Close() End Sub End Class

Here is my trial: Sub Main() Dim z As New SerializableDictionary(Of String, String) z.Add("asdf", "asd") Console.WriteLine(z.Serialize) End Sub Result: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><Entry key="asdf" value="asd" /> I placed a breakpoint on top of the WriteXml method and I see that when it stops, the writer contains no data at all, and IMHO it should contain the root element and the xml declaration. <Serializable()> _ Public Class SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue) : Inherits Dictionary(Of TKey, TValue) : Implements IXmlSerializable Private Const EntryString As String = "Entry" Private Const KeyString As String = "key" Private Const ValueString As String = "value" Private Shared ReadOnly AttributableTypes As Type() = New Type() {GetType(Boolean), GetType(Byte), GetType(Char), GetType(DateTime), GetType(Decimal), GetType(Double), GetType([Enum]), GetType(Guid), GetType(Int16), GetType(Int32), GetType(Int64), GetType(SByte), GetType(Single), GetType(String), GetType(TimeSpan), GetType(UInt16), GetType(UInt32), GetType(UInt64)} Private Shared ReadOnly GetIsAttributable As Predicate(Of Type) = Function(t) AttributableTypes.Contains(t) Private Shared ReadOnly IsKeyAttributable As Boolean = GetIsAttributable(GetType(TKey)) Private Shared ReadOnly IsValueAttributable As Boolean = GetIsAttributable(GetType(TValue)) Private Shared ReadOnly GetElementName As Func(Of Boolean, String) = Function(isKey) If(isKey, KeyString, ValueString) Public Function GetSchema() As System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema Implements System.Xml.Serialization.IXmlSerializable.GetSchema Return Nothing End Function Public Sub WriteXml(ByVal writer As XmlWriter) Implements IXmlSerializable.WriteXml For Each entry In Me writer.WriteStartElement(EntryString) WriteData(IsKeyAttributable, writer, True, entry.Key) WriteData(IsValueAttributable, writer, False, entry.Value) writer.WriteEndElement() Next End Sub Private Sub WriteData(Of T)(ByVal attributable As Boolean, ByVal writer As XmlWriter, ByVal isKey As Boolean, ByVal value As T) Dim name = GetElementName(isKey) If attributable Then writer.WriteAttributeString(name, value.ToString) Else Dim serializer As New XmlSerializer(GetType(T)) writer.WriteStartElement(name) serializer.Serialize(writer, value) writer.WriteEndElement() End If End Sub Public Sub ReadXml(ByVal reader As XmlReader) Implements IXmlSerializable.ReadXml Dim empty = reader.IsEmptyElement reader.Read() If empty Then Exit Sub Clear() While reader.NodeType <> XmlNodeType.EndElement While reader.NodeType = XmlNodeType.Whitespace reader.Read() Dim key = ReadData(Of TKey)(IsKeyAttributable, reader, True) Dim value = ReadData(Of TValue)(IsValueAttributable, reader, False) Add(key, value) If Not IsKeyAttributable AndAlso Not IsValueAttributable Then reader.ReadEndElement() Else reader.Read() While reader.NodeType = XmlNodeType.Whitespace reader.Read() End While End While reader.ReadEndElement() End While End Sub Private Function ReadData(Of T)(ByVal attributable As Boolean, ByVal reader As XmlReader, ByVal isKey As Boolean) As T Dim name = GetElementName(isKey) Dim type = GetType(T) If attributable Then Return Convert.ChangeType(reader.GetAttribute(name), type) Else Dim serializer As New XmlSerializer(type) While reader.Name <> name reader.Read() End While reader.ReadStartElement(name) Dim value = serializer.Deserialize(reader) reader.ReadEndElement() Return value End If End Function Public Shared Function Serialize(ByVal dictionary As SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue)) As String Dim sb As New StringBuilder(1024) Dim sw As New StringWriter(sb) Dim xs As New XmlSerializer(GetType(SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue))) xs.Serialize(sw, dictionary) sw.Dispose() Return sb.ToString End Function Public Shared Function Deserialize(ByVal xml As String) As SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue) Dim xs As New XmlSerializer(GetType(SerializableDictionary(Of TKey, TValue))) Dim xr As New XmlTextReader(xml, XmlNodeType.Document, Nothing) Return xs.Deserialize(xr) xr.Close() End Function Public Function Serialize() As String Dim sb As New StringBuilder Dim xw = XmlWriter.Create(sb) WriteXml(xw) xw.Close() Return sb.ToString End Function Public Sub Parse(ByVal xml As String) Dim xr As New XmlTextReader(xml, XmlNodeType.Document, Nothing) ReadXml(xr) xr.Close() End Sub End Class

  • MemoryStream, XmlTextWriter and Warning 4 CA2202 : Microsoft.Usage

    - by rasx
    The Run Code Analysis command in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate returns a warning when seeing a certain pattern with MemoryStream and XmlTextWriter. This is the warning: Warning 7 CA2202 : Microsoft.Usage : Object 'ms' can be disposed more than once in method 'KinteWritePages.GetXPathDocument(DbConnection)'. To avoid generating a System.ObjectDisposedException you should not call Dispose more than one time on an object.: Lines: 421 C:\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\Songhay.DataAccess.KinteWritePages\KinteWritePages.cs 421 Songhay.DataAccess.KinteWritePages This is the form: static XPathDocument GetXPathDocument(DbConnection connection) { XPathDocument xpDoc = null; var ms = new MemoryStream(); try { using(XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(ms, Encoding.UTF8)) { using(DbDataReader reader = CommonReader.GetReader(connection, Resources.KinteRssSql)) { writer.WriteStartDocument(); writer.WriteStartElement("data"); do { while(reader.Read()) { writer.WriteStartElement("item"); for(int i = 0; i < reader.FieldCount; i++) { writer.WriteRaw(String.Format("<{0}>{1}</{0}>", reader.GetName(i), reader[i].ToString())); } writer.WriteFullEndElement(); } } while(reader.NextResult()); writer.WriteFullEndElement(); writer.WriteEndDocument(); writer.Flush(); ms.Position = 0; xpDoc = new XPathDocument(ms); } } } finally { ms.Dispose(); } return xpDoc; } The same kind of warning is produced for this form: XPathDocument xpDoc = null; using(var ms = new MemoryStream()) { using(XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(ms, Encoding.UTF8)) { using(DbDataReader reader = CommonReader.GetReader(connection, Resources.KinteRssSql)) { //... } } } return xpDoc; By the way, the following form produces another warning: XPathDocument xpDoc = null; var ms = new MemoryStream(); using(XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(ms, Encoding.UTF8)) { using(DbDataReader reader = CommonReader.GetReader(connection, Resources.KinteRssSql)) { //... } } return xpDoc; The above produces the warning: Warning 7 CA2000 : Microsoft.Reliability : In method 'KinteWritePages.GetXPathDocument(DbConnection)', object 'ms' is not disposed along all exception paths. Call System.IDisposable.Dispose on object 'ms' before all references to it are out of scope. C:\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\Songhay.DataAccess.KinteWritePages\KinteWritePages.cs 383 Songhay.DataAccess.KinteWritePages In addition to the following, what are my options?: Supress warning CA2202. Supress warning CA2000 and hope that Microsoft is disposing of MemoryStream (because Reflector is not showing me the source code). Rewrite my legacy code to recognize the wonderful XDocument and LINQ to XML.

  • sharepoint custom aspx page with database connection

    - by Megini
    hi there i have created a custom aspx page whithin my sharepoint site with a sql server connection to a database on that server to select data when i view the page it works but when another user tries to view it it gives the following error : Server Error in '/' Application. Login failed for user 'GRINCOR\GuguK'. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'GRINCOR\GuguK'. Source Error: The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL: Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. Example: <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" % or: 2) Add the following section to the configuration file of your application: Note that this second technique will cause all files within a given application to be compiled in debug mode. The first technique will cause only that particular file to be compiled in debug mode. Important: Running applications in debug mode does incur a memory/performance overhead. • UNIX FIFO: How to allow only one writer/reader pair to use a FIFO?

    - by Max Krug
    Hi! I've written two programs: the first, the "writer", creates a FIFO and writes data into it. The second one, the "reader" runs in background and looks for data in the FIFO. Once data is there, the reader reads it out. If I start e.g. two writers and two readers, they all can write/read into/from the same FIFO. How can I restrict it for 3rd and 4th readers/writers to use the FIFO and allow only one writer and one reader to use the FIFO? thanks a lot. -- kind regards, Max Krug

  • asp.net Web server control with child controls, event not firing

    I have a simple web control (TaskList) that can have children (Task) which inherit from LinkButton, that can be added declaratively or programatically. • VSS Post Backup failures for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 virtual machines

    - by califguy4christ
    We've been seeing strange errors with Volume Shadow Copy services on our Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 host. It appears to be failing on a strange mountpoint in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ folders, which I believe is used by VSS to mount a writeable image file. To summarize: The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer continually goes into a failed retryable state The Virtual Server log reports errors during the Post Backup phase VSS reports errors backing up a mount point of unknown origins The mount point causes NTFS and ftdisk errors The host is x86 Windows Server 2003 Standard, SP2. The virtual machine is the same. Both use basic disks. Here is the writer state: Writer name: 'Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer' Writer Id: {76afb926-87ad-4a20-a50f-cdc69412ddfc} Writer Instance Id: {78df98e2-bf19-4804-890b-15865efef3bd} State: [11] Failed Last error: Retryable error From the Virtual Server log: Virtual Server - Vss Writer - Event ID: 1035: The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PostBackup phase. The guest shadow copies did not get exposed on the host machine, after mounting all the virtual hard disks of the virtual machine VMACHINE. From the Application log: VSS - None - Event ID: 12290: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW( \\?\Volume{fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc4961ca6}\,NULL,0, NULL,NULL,[0x00000000], , 260) == 0x0000045d. hr = 0x00000000. From the System log: Ntfs - Disk - Event ID: 55: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ {fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc49.... My current theory is that VSS creates a mount point for an image file of the VHD, then the software panics for some reason, leaving everything in an inconsistent state. Removing the mount point doesn't resolve the problem. All of the other disks check out fine with CHKDSK. There's no exclusion option for VHDs or to turn off online backups. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or point me in the right direction for getting more information about the mount point and it's origins? I haven't been able to trace what application is creating that mount point.

  • How to append new elements to Xml from a stream

    - by Wololo
    I have a method which returns some xml in a memory stream private MemoryStream GetXml() { XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings(); settings.Indent = true; using (MemoryStream memoryStream = new MemoryStream()) { using (XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(memoryStream, settings)) { writer.WriteStartDocument(); writer.WriteStartElement("root"); writer.WriteStartElement("element"); writer.WriteString("content"); writer.WriteEndElement(); writer.WriteEndElement(); writer.WriteEndDocument(); writer.Flush(); } return memoryStream; } } In this example the format of the xml will be: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <root> <element>content</element> </root> How can i insert a new element under the root e.g <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <root> <element>content</element> ----->New element here <------ </root> EDIT: Also please suggest the most efficient method as returning a memorystream may not be the best solution. The final xml will be passed to a custom HttpHandler so what are the best options for writing the output? context.Response.Write vs context.Response.OutputStream

  • GZipStream in an WebHttpResponse producing no data

    - by Pierre 303
    I want to compress my HTTP Responses for client that supports it. Here is the code used to send a standard response: IHttpClientContext context = (IHttpClientContext)sender; IHttpRequest request = e.Request; string responseBody = "This is some random text"; IHttpResponse response = request.CreateResponse(context); using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(response.Body)) { writer.WriteLine(responseBody); writer.Flush(); response.Send(); } The code above works fine. Now I added gzip support below. When I test it with a browser that supports gzip or a custom method, it returns an empty string. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I just can't find it... IHttpClientContext context = (IHttpClientContext)sender; IHttpRequest request = e.Request; string acceptEncoding = request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; string responseBody = "This is some random text"; IHttpResponse response = request.CreateResponse(context); if (acceptEncoding != null && acceptEncoding.Contains("gzip")) { byte[] bytes = ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetBytes(responseBody); response.AddHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip"); using (GZipStream writer = new GZipStream(response.Body, CompressionMode.Compress)) { writer.Write(bytes, 0, bytes.Length); writer.Flush(); response.Send(); } } else { using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(response.Body)) { writer.WriteLine(responseBody); writer.Flush(); response.Send(); } }

  • .NET XML serialization gotchas?

    - by kurious
    I've run into a few gotchas when doing C# XML serialization that I thought I'd share: You can't serialize items that are read-only (like KeyValuePairs) You can't serialize a generic dictionary. Instead, try this wrapper class (from http://weblogs.asp.net/pwelter34/archive/2006/05/03/444961.aspx): using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.Xml.Serialization; [XmlRoot("dictionary")] public class SerializableDictionary<TKey, TValue> : Dictionary<TKey, TValue>, IXmlSerializable { public System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema GetSchema() { return null; } public void ReadXml(System.Xml.XmlReader reader) { XmlSerializer keySerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TKey)); XmlSerializer valueSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TValue)); bool wasEmpty = reader.IsEmptyElement; reader.Read(); if (wasEmpty) return; while (reader.NodeType != System.Xml.XmlNodeType.EndElement) { reader.ReadStartElement("item"); reader.ReadStartElement("key"); TKey key = (TKey)keySerializer.Deserialize(reader); reader.ReadEndElement(); reader.ReadStartElement("value"); TValue value = (TValue)valueSerializer.Deserialize(reader); reader.ReadEndElement(); this.Add(key, value); reader.ReadEndElement(); reader.MoveToContent(); } reader.ReadEndElement(); } public void WriteXml(System.Xml.XmlWriter writer) { XmlSerializer keySerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TKey)); XmlSerializer valueSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TValue)); foreach (TKey key in this.Keys) { writer.WriteStartElement("item"); writer.WriteStartElement("key"); keySerializer.Serialize(writer, key); writer.WriteEndElement(); writer.WriteStartElement("value"); TValue value = this[key]; valueSerializer.Serialize(writer, value); writer.WriteEndElement(); writer.WriteEndElement(); } } } Any other XML gotchas out there?

Or do I only have the option of caching the DataTable object?

  • Ensuring unique ID attribute for elements within ScriptControl

    - by Andy West
    I'm creating a control based on ScriptControl, and I'm overriding the Render method like this: protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { RenderBeginTag(writer); writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Div); writer.Write("This is a test."); writer.RenderEndTag(); RenderEndTag(writer); } My question is, what if I want to assign the div an ID attribute and have it be unique on the page, even if there are mulitple instances of my control? I've seen other people's code that does this: writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Id, this.ID + "_divTest"); That will prevent naming conflicts between instances of my control, but what if I've already created a div elsewhere on the page that coincidentally has the same ID? I've also heard about implementing INamingContainer. Would that apply here? How could I use it?

  • Rails: unexpected behavior updating a shared instance

    - by Pascal Lindelauf
    I have a User object, that is related to a Post object via two different association paths: Post --(has_many)-- comments --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Post --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Say the following hold: user1.name == "Bill" post1.comments[1].writer == user1 post1.writer == user1 Now when I retrieve the post1 and its comments from the database and I update post1.comments[1].writer like so: post1.comments[1].writer.name = "John" I would expect post1.writer to equal "John" too. But it doesn't! It still equals "Bill". So there seems to be some caching going on, but the kind I would not expect. I would expect Rails to be clever enough to load exactly one instance of the user with name "Bill"; instead is appears to load two individual ones: one for each association path. Can someone explain how this works exactly and how I am to handle these types of situations the "Rails way"?

  • Are monads Writer m and Either e categorically dual?

    - by sdcvvc
    I noticed there is a dual relation between Writer m and Either e monads. If m is a monoid, then unit :: () -> m join :: (m,m) -> m can be used to form a monad: return is composition: a -> ((),a) -> (m,a) join is composition: (m,(m,a)) -> ((m,m),a) -> (m,a) The dual of () is Void (empty type), the dual of product is coproduct. Every type e can be given "comonoid" structure: unit :: Void -> e join :: Either e e -> e in the obvious way. Now, return is composition: a -> Either Void a -> Either e a join is composition: Either e (Either e a) -> Either (Either e e) a -> Either e a and this is the Either e monad. The arrows follow exactly the same pattern. Question: Is it possible to write a single generic code that will be able to perform both as Either e and as Writer m depending on the monoid given?
