• Torrent clients suddenly stopped downloading

  A few days ago I noticed, that Transmission in my Ubuntu 10.04 machine suddenly couldn't download anything anymore. To overcome this I have uninstalled and reinstalled Transmission and tried downloading with other clients (Deluge, Vuze) well seeded torrents (ubuntu iso images for example) without success. On the same computer I have also installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7, which I rarely use. What makes the problem I encounter weirder, is the fact that downloading via torrents works fine in my Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows partitions but not in Lucid Lynx. Browsing the web for similar problems didn't give me answers. Any help would greatly appreciated.

• Source Browsing in FireFox

  Source Browsing in FireFox Just casually observed this a few minutes back with my Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3. When you do a view source of any  page in Internet Explorer it just renders as editable inoperative HTML. However in Firefox the hyperlinks are shown clickable and active. When you click on any hyperlink the most obvious and expected output would be that the target page would appear in one of the new tab in the parent browser. However the View Source window refreshed with the HTML source of the new page. I believe this gesture of Firefox would help us to take a journey back into Lynx Text Browsing in a way.

  Ever since 10.04 I have been trying to resolve an issue with my graphics card - nVidia GeForce 210. I'm having issues when I watch movies - they are jumping all the time, even with Compiz disabled and when that is the only thing I am doing. I have tried the solution to How to get NVidia GeForce GT 210 drivers working on Lucid Lynx? but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Here are the steps I took: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau edit /etc/default/grub to add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Download official Linux drivers from nVidia site. sh filename-of-downloaded-driver-package

• Garbled display after Ubuntu upgrade to 2.6.32-2* kernel

  I was running Ubuntu 9 (Karmic Koala) with no problems. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10 (Lucid Lynx) and cannot use it normally. After I log in, the screen scrambles (a purple/green mess)--impossible to see anything, although I can get out by marking the spot on the screen to click for a restart, so Linux is working behind the scenes. If I start in recovery mode with basic graphics, I have no problems at all (other than limited functionality). If I start the old 2.6.31-22 kernel, I see a bunch of "unmountable" errors in the startup script, but I can use Linux normally with no apparent problems. I'm running an IBM ThinkPad A30 with ATI Mobility graphics. Just to reiterate, the screen looks normal until I log in, at which point it goes bonkers. What do I need to change in order to fix this?

• Window decoration of emacs23 window on fluxbox is outside screen

  I am starting emacs remotely over an ssh connection. But on the emacs window I cannot find a way to resize or move it. There is no fluxbox title bar visible, and I guess the title bar is above the visible viewport, because emacs starts vertically with more height than the screen has. The lower border of the emacs window is also below the viewport border, so I cannot resize the window. I am starting emacs like this: emacs23 This is the emacs version: This is GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.20.0) of 2010-03-29 on yellow, modified by Debian The remote system that runs emacs is 10.04 Lucid Lynx amd64. • How to get numpad out of "mouse emulation" mode?

  My numeric keypad has somehow got into a "mouse emulation" mode where the number keys just move the mouse pointer around (2 = down; 8 = up, 6 = right, etc). Anyone know how to make it work normally again? None of the other numpad keys work either (I first noticed the whole thing when Ctrl + ÷ (numpad division sign) no longer produced "line comment" in IntelliJ IDEA). Toggling num lock doesn't affect this (though the indicator LED works as usual). I'm using GNOME on Lucid Lynx (10.4).

• Fix hibernate on Thinkpad X60 with 12.04 Precise Pangolin

  I own a ThinkPad X60, hibernate used to work on 10.04 Lucid Lynx, but no longer works correctly on 12.04. I am aware of how to enable hibernate in Power Manager. The problem here is, in the default configuration, pm-hibernate works, but the system fails to resume correctly. There is no video glitch, black screen or other. The resume process just freezes on the Ubuntu splash boot after a few seconds of disk activity. Is there a way to fix the system configuration so hibernates works again?

  I have a bash script called test.sh that uses command-line argument: lynx -dump $1 > $name".txt" But I need name to be created from the argument by specific keywords in the argument. An example is: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412941,00.asp http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412919,00.asp Both are two separate articles but are the difference can only be seen in those 12 characters. How do I create a variable from a url for those 12 characters? So that when I run test.sh in Terminal: ./test.sh http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412941,00.asp there is a text file saved as 0,2817,2412941,00?

  Hello, I'm watching The Bold and the beautiful on the site: http://www.tvp.pl/seriale/obyczajowe/moda-na-sukces/wideo Yesterday I wanted to view next episode, however it didn't work. I checked various episodes from other points in time and none works. The "dots" that appear when a Silverlight video is loading are present, but after them there is only black screen (of death). I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 bit with GNOME2 and firefox 3.6. I have all updates done. Could somebody check if any video is working for them and tell me their setup, please? Best regards. Oliverka

  How i can buy the contents of the server of archive.ubuntu.com (for lucid lynx)? In my country i have ultra slow connection. It will take years for downloading all these gigabytes. Because, canonical will stop supporting ubuntu 10.04, i want all the files now, before it's too late. i know that all files will be transfer to old.dir but i think some will be lost. • How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password?

  I'm working on a Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system using a Panasonic CF-50 Laptop. My Client has completely forgotten his Administrative Password. He doesn't even remember entering one; however it is there. I've tried the suggestions on the WebSite and I have been unsuccessful in deleting the password so that I can download applets required for running some files. Do you have a solution? I'm currently using a script to start up my IPV6 tunnel with free6/gogo6 - right now its a simple script invoking a single command, and its configuration file #! /bin/sh /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c -f /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c.conf Of course, when this goes down, it tends to be silent, and so i'd need to get in and restart it I'd like to set up an upstart script which will start this app on startup, functionally identical to the script i have restart this script as 'root' should the app fail enable me to restart the tunnel should anything go wrong.

I want to access this proxy over the internet (as an anonymizer) so that I can see how some ads show up for US traffic on my website. I have setup authentication so abuse is not a problem. However, I am not able to access the proxy over the internet. I have set the following rule in squid.conf http_access allow all Is this not possible to do what I want or I am missing something? The port 3128 is open in the firewall so that is not an issue. Squid is running on 0.0.0.0 Thanks

  Folks, I have followed the instructions here http://tuxnetworks.blogspot.com/2010/06/howto-ldap-server-on-1004-lucid-lynx.html to setup my OpenLdap and its working just fine, except an anonymous user can bind to my server and see the whole user/group structure. LDAP is running over SSL. I have read online that i can add disallow bind_anon and require authc in the slapd.conf file and it will be disabled but there is no slapd.conf file to begin with and since this doesn't use slapd.conf for its configuration as i understand OpenLdap has moved to a cn=config setup so it wont read that file even if i create one. i have looked online without any luck. I believe i need to change something in here olcAccess: to attrs=userPassword by dn="cn=admin,dc=tuxnetworks,dc=com" write by anonymous auth by self write by * none olcAccess: to attrs=shadowLastChange by self write by * read olcAccess: to dn.base="" by * read olcAccess: to * by dn="cn=admin,dc=tuxnetworks,dc=com" write by * read but i am not sure what. • Trouble installing ubuntu server on virtualbox (osx)

  Hello all, I'm trying to install lucid lynx 10.04.2 server on a virtualbox on snow leopard. I have 2 server iso files freshly downloaded one i386 and one 64bit. When I try to start the virtual machine with either one set to be the cd drive I'm getting the same error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ub. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Couldn't find anything on it on google so I'm trying to see if anyone else has dealt with this issue. Thanks much in advance! edit: just downloaded the 32bit desktop edition to same avail edit2: ran Disk Utility' replair permissions then restarted. New error VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE (instead of VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT)

  I am about to deploy a web application (in a couple months) with the following set-up (perhaps anyways): Ubuntu Lucid Lynx with: IP Tables firewall (white-list style with only 3 ports open) Custom SSH port (like 31847 or something) No "root" SSH access Long, random username (not just "admin" or something) with a long password (65 chars) PostgreSQL which only listens to localhost 256 bit SSL Cert Reverse proxy from NGINX to my application server (UWSGI) Assume that my colo is secure (Physical access isn't my concern for the time being) Application-level security (SQL injection, XSS, Directory Traversal, CSRF, etc) Perhaps IP masquerading (but I don't really understand this yet) Does this sound like a secure setup? I hear about people's web apps getting hacked all the time, and part of me thinks, "maybe they're just neglecting something", but the other part of me thinks, "maybe there's nothing you can do to protect your server, and those things are just measures to make it a little harder for script kiddies to get in". If I told you all of this, gave you my IP address, and told you what ports were available, would it be possible for you to get in (assuming you have a penetration testing tool), or is this really protected well.

• Increase text size in Ubuntu 10.04 due to having large resolution/monitors

  I have 24" dual monitors with 1920x1080 resolution on both of them. Consequently the text appears so small. I use the following text-intensive applications frequently: Web browser (Google Chrome) IDE (Komodo) Terminal (Gnome Terminal) Email (Thunderbird) I can configure text size on IDE, Terminal and Email. But for Chrome, it is not a good idea to set proportional font size because often one wants to see the entire (not just proportional fonts) site to be zoomed. So I am asking: Is it possible to increase DPI in Ubuntu (much like on Windows) so as to increase the text size across all apps? OR Is it possible to set permanent 'zoom' in Google Chrome, using a third-party extension maybe? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

• Web browsing over SSH

  Hello, I have something of a difficult situation : our company has a webserver in a remote data center that's, at the moment, only accessible by SSH and the firewall is not easily modifiable because the techs at the data center are unreliable and unreachable lately (not my choice of data center, and switching is not an option at the moment). Are there any browsers or plugins out there that will let me browse over an SSH connection ? I can browse with links and lynx on the SSH command line, but that doesn't give me access to various functionality I need, and it's too hard to find things in the web application running on a Tomcat server on the box that I need access to. Does anybody have any suggestions ? We're already working on getting direct access to the web application by having the firewall opened up, but I need something better in the mean time.
