• VB.NET ASP.NET Web Application woes (VS 2008)

  Hi all, I am making my first web application with ASP.NET and I am having a rough time. I have previously created the application I am working on as a Windows Form application and it works great, but I am having problems with the HTML side of things in the web application. My issues are pretty minor, but very annoying. I have worked with websites before and CSS, but as far as I can tell I do not have direct access to a CSS when creating a web application in VS 2008. My biggest issue is the positioning of components that I have dragged onto the "Default.aspx" form. For instance, how am I supposed to float a panel next to another one if I don't have a CSS, or how am I to correctly position a label?

• Why is Visual Studio 2008 slow with Firefox?

  I am using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. I've made an ASP.NET MVC site which has 6 CSS files and 6 Javascript files in the HEAD element in the Site.Master file. When I do F5 or CTRL-F5 in Explorer or Opera, the site displays instantly. When I run my site in Firefox, it takes a SECOND for each CSS and each Javascript file on LOCALHOST, i.e. 12 seconds to load on localhost. What might I be able to change in the Firefox settings so it is as fast as Opera and Explorer? NEW INFO: Uninstalled Firebug completely, no yslow, no other add-ons. When I take out the CSS and Javascript files, then Firefox is as fast as the other browsers. What could be taking it so long on a local connection?

• VS 2008 Profiler - Caller/Callee view showing bottom of stack

  Hello, I am currently trying to profile a class contained in a different assembly. To do this I created a small console application which calls into the public entry point of the class I want to profile. This enrty point is called Run(). This is working fine when I run my Console application in Debug mode and I can step into the Run() method. The Run() method calls a variety of other methods in its own assembly and other assemblies. However, when I create a new profiler of type "Instrumentation" in VS 2008, and run the profiler, the report shows my Main() function calling Run(), but in turn, when viewing the Caller/Callee report for my Run() method the report shows that the Run() method is the bottom of the stack. This is clearly not the case - could anyone please suggest why this is happening? Thanks.

• Opening a Silverlight project causes APPCRASH is Visual Studio 2008

  Hi guys I've got to add a Silverlight project to a solution for a deployment procedure (it's a pre-build dependency for the main project). I've installed Silverlight tools v3, silverlight itself and the silverlight sdk 3, and am using Visual Studio 2008 with ReSharper and the DevArt oracle database tools. Every time I go to open the relevant silverlight .csproj file VS crashes with the following error message: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: devenv.exe Application Version: 9.0.30729.1 Application Timestamp: 488f2b50 Fault Module Name: StackHash_20af Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000 Fault Module Timestamp: 4791a7a6 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000b015d This also happens if I try to create a new silverlight project from scratch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Visual Studio 2008's annoying auto-handling of block comments

  I read that great post on Visual Studio 2008 annoyances, but didn't see this one. It drives me crazy. Now, I realize that some people use block comments like this for function documentation and the like: /* * * * */ But you know, this is VS2008 and now we can use ///. The only time I ever feel the need to use C-style commenting is when I have some junk or test code that I temporarily want to remove. It absolutely drives me nuts when I do the first /* and then when I add a line after the test code, it automatically puts a space after the * and I end up with this: * / . So then I end up always having to backspace to complete the block comment. I looked through all of the C# editor settings in the VS2008 IDE, and didn't find anything relevant. Does this drive anyone else here crazy, or am I turning into a codemudgeon?

• 2008 Datacenter Word Automation issue

  We have an application that uses word automation. It works fine under Windows XP, but does not work on our Windows Server 2008 64-bit virtual machine running on VMware ESX unless it is running as the domain administrator. Under any other account (including a local admin), Word starts, uses a lot of CPU for 40 seconds when opening a document, and then just hangs. Our application does not access anything not on the local machine, and this machine is not being used for anything else (not a domain controller, etc). I know others have posted similar issues, with the solution of creating a Desktop folder somewhere under the windows directory. We did this, and it did not solve the problem (Word did not get as far as it did before we did this though). Please don't turn this into a thread about why I am trying to do this, whether I should do this, or whether I need to. For argument sake, I don't need to do this, but understanding what privilege a local admin does not have that is needed to do this is a legitimate concern.

• Add values to standard expressions list in Regular Expression Editor dialog in VS 2008

  Hi. In the "Regular Expression Editor" dialog in VS 2008 ( or 2005 for this matter ) , there is a list of "standard expressions" like : "French phone number" , "French postal code" etc.. And of course there is an option to select a "Custom" and then enter your own regular expression. Well.. I want to add a predefined expressions to that list . Like : "Israeli phone number" . I don't want to enter it every time by selecting a custom value . I want my developers in the team available items for them to choose. Anyone knows how to alter that list ? I've found some question about it on the web - and the answer given is that it's not possible . But that was at 2004. Anyone ?!?! Thanks.

• Visual Studios Team System 2008 Code Coverage Window Closes

  Trying to run the code coverage tool in Visual Studios for a set of unit tests. Adam from Think First, Code Later has had the same problem: I wanted to get the code coverage metrics for the project. Naturally, I fire up the solution in Visual Studio 2008, go to the Test menu, click Edit Test Run Configurations, and click Local Test Run. I then click Code Coverage to turn on code coverage for a given assembly and POOF the Local Test Run Configraution window just disappears. He recommends installing this hotfix to fix the problem, however a) when I run that hotfix I get the message “None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup.” and b) there is no Silverlight in our solution. Any other ideas for a fix?

• Powershell 4 compatibility with Windows 2008 r2

  In my environment I have a single server that has access to pretty much my entire network. That server is running Windows 2008 r2, and I have upgraded Powershell to version 4.0. The question I have is this... Can I run cmdlets from that machine on other machines that are version 4 specific? For instance, when I am using Powershell, even though it is version 4, it doesn't give me an intellisense autocomplete for "Get-Volume" like it would on a 2012 r2 machine. I understand that it won't run on that machine because the infrastructure won't allow for it, but what about a 2012 r2 machine remotely? I am looking to run batch scripts from there for various purposes.

  Hello, I'm executing sql query on my database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my D harddrive which has 55 GB free space. I have also C drive which has sth like 150 MB free (right now). While executing that query on quite a big table (16 GB) I have an error: An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Not enough disk space. I would like to know if there is any possibility that I can make SQL Server to use D drive instead of C Or maybe there is any other problem with what I'm doing ? Thanks for help

• Visual Studio 2008 Create Word 2007 Template Project Crashes

  I've got this weird crashing happening when creating a C# Word 2007 Template Project in Visual Studio 2008. The IDE tells me that it's creating the project (it does create the solution and C# vsproj as well as the dotx and cs files). Then the IDE just crashes - no errors, messages, etc. When I try devenv /SafeMode it still doesn't work. I've also tried devenv /log but I don't really see any smoking guns. I have VS2008 SP1 and VSTO 3.0 SP1 installed. Anybody know why this is occurring or more importantly, how I can get it to stop?

  Hello, I am not a SQL Expert. I’m trying to elegantly solve a query problem that others have had to have had. Surprisingly, Google is not returning anything that is helping. Basically, my application has a “search” box. This search field will allow a user to search for customers in the system. I have a table called “Customer” in my SQL Server 2008 database. This table is defined as follows: Customer UserName (nvarchar) FirstName (nvarchar) LastName (nvarchar) As you can imagine, my users will enter queries of varying cases and probably mis-spell the customer’s names regularly. How do I query my customer table and return the 25 results that are closest to their query? I have no idea how to do this ranking and consider the three fields listed in my table. Thank you!

  I'm trying to shrink the log of a database AND set the recovery to simple, but always there is an error, whatever i try. USE 4_o5; GO ALTER DATABASE 4_o5 SET RECOVERY SIMPLE; GO DBCC SHRINKFILE (4_o5_log, 10); GO the output of sp_helpfile says that log file is located under (hosted solution): I:\dataroot\4_o5_log.LDF please help me perform this operation as the log file got large when importing a lot of data and now this info is no longer needed, have multiple (lots of) backups since then. the exact error message when performing the query above is: incorrect syntax near '4'. RECOVERY is not a recognized SET option. incorrect syntax near _5_log'. i am using visual studio 2010 (also have SQL Server Express installed locally, SQL Server 2008 proper installed at provider (shared)) thnx a lot

  I have an MDF and LDF file of SQL Server 2005. i attached it with SQL Server 2008 and did some change in data. now when i attached it back to sql server 2005 Express Edition it gives version error. The database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF' cannot be opened because it is version 655. This server supports version 612 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. Could not open new database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file E:\DB\Jobpers.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

• Visual Studio 2008 Solution Explorer Randomly Expands Folders

  VS 2008 is randomly opening sub-folders for me. Sometimes just a few, sometimes every sub-folder in my project or solution. This happens even when I am not using it - last night when I knoocked off, my solution explorer was closed up tight - this morning, one large project had dozens of sub-folders open. This is not a matter of restoring a previously saved state - most of the folders that get opened are not part of the project, and I have never looked at them with VS. I have downloaded and installed the PowerCommands add-in, and it lets me collapse everything nicely. But I don't want to have to do this several times per day - it closes up folders that I want to be open as well. So, does anyone know why this happens and how to stop it? I found this question from a few months ago which is about the same as this one, but was not answered. I am hoping someone has figured out a solution.

• SQL Server Express 2008 Stored Procedure execution time spikes periodically

  I have a big stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 Express SP2 database that gets run about every 200 ms. Normal execution time is about 50ms. What I am seeing is large inconsistencies in this run time. It will execute for while, say 50-100 times at 40-60ms which is expected, then seemingly at random the same stored procedure will take way longer, say 900ms or 1.5 seconds to run. Sometimes more than one call of the same procedure in a row will take longer too. It appears that something is causing sql server to slow down dramatically every minute or so, but I can't figure out what. There is no timing pattern between the occurences. I have the same setup on two different computers, one of which is a clean XP Pro load with no virus checking and nothing installed except SQL server. Also, The recovery options for all the databases are set to "Simple".

This query i supposed to insert two different passengers in a database on two different flights. I'm sure both seats aren't taken, but i can't figure out why the trigger is giving me the error. • Using Tortoise SVN with C++ in Visual Studio 2008

  I have an online repository with some .h and .cpp files that make up part of a project. I'm trying to check these out and use them in a new project, but am getting errors (C4627 and C1010). All the files have been added to the project (with AddExisting Item...), and the subdirectories that contain these files have been added to the "Additional include directories" of the project. Would I be better off having the entire project tree in the repository? My reason for not doing so is that my colleague and I are working on different parts of the code and so want to use different main methods to test things as we go, and I didn't see any need to be passing around any compiled code etc. since I assumed that given the .h and .cpp files (with the correct settings), visual studio would be able to compile the project. What's the best way to make Visual Studio 2008 and TortoiseSVN work well together (without spending any money)?

  I ran the Visual Studio 2008 profiler against my ASP.NET application and came up with the following result set. CURRENT FUNCTION TIME (msec) ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Data.GetItem(params) | 10,158.12 ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Functions that were called by Data.GetItem(params) TIME (msec) ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Model.GetSubItem(params) | 0.83 Model.GetSubItem2(params) | 0.77 Model.GetSubItem3(params) | 0.76 etc. The issue I'm facing is that the sum of the Functions called by Data.GetItem(params) do not sum up to the 10,158.12 msec total. This would lead me to believe that the bulk of the time is actually spent executing the code within that method. My question is ... does Visual Studio provide a way to analyze the method itself so I can see which sections of code are taking the longest? if it does not are there any recommended tools to do this? or should I start writing my own timing scripts? • Tracing or Logging Resource Governor classification function behavior in Sql Server 2008

  I'm trying to use the Resource Governor in SQL Server 2008 but I find it hard to debug the classification function and figure out what the input variables will have, i.e. does SUSER_NAME() contain the domain name? What does the APP_NAME() string look like? It's also hard to verify that it's working correctly. What group did the function return? The only way I can see this is to fire up the performance monitor and watch unblinkingly for little blips in the right CPU counter. Is there some way I can either run it in Debug mode, where I can set a breakpoint and step through and look at variable values, or can I at least do the old-school method of writing trace statements to a file so I can see what's going on?   Hi, On a 2003 server box, with SQL server 2008 installed (ReportServer deployed in IIS mode), I've got a virtual directory within IIS with it's security set to 'windows authentication', with the following html code: <body> <h1>test</h1> <iframe src="/reportserver" witdh="50%" height="50%" /> </body> From the outside, I've got a first login/pwd box displayed to access the html code, then a second one to display the content of the iframe. On the same type of server, but with SQL Server 2005, I don't have this issue (i.e. only one login box). My thought is that the first token should give acces to both the page and the iframe, isn't it? Any hints on how to setup the reportserver to fix this? thanks.

  What is a good setup for .hgignore file when working with Visual Studio 2008? I mostly develop on my own, only occasionly I clone the repository for somebody else to work on it. I'm thinking about obj folders, .suo, .sln, .user files etc.. Can they just be included or are there file I shouldn't include?   I have a SQL 2008 table with a field called RecDate of type DateTimeOffset. For a given record the value is '2010-04-01 17:19:23.62 -05:00' In C# I create a DataTable and fill it with the results of "SELECT RecDate FROM MyTable". I need to get the milliseconds, but if I do the following the milliseconds are always 0: DateTimeOffset dto = DateTimeOffset.Parse(dt.Rows[0][0].ToString()); What is the proper way to get the value in the RecDate column into the dto variable?   I am trying to generate a report using SSRS 2008. During report processing i am facing an error which states.."An error has occured during report processing .Query execution failed for dataset (datasetno).A severe error occured opn the current command.The results if any,should be discarded.Operation cancelled by user ". The datasetname for which query execution is failing is changing randomly.When I am executing those dataset queries seperately it was not throwing any errors.Sometimes I am getting my report without any failure. I am really fix in this issue.Don't have any clue how to solve this error. plz anyone help me. Thanks in advance.
