• Editing Subversion post-commit script to enable automated Hudson builds

  Hey guys, I'm not so good with Linux, but I need to modify the post-commit file of my Subversion repository to get Hudson to build automatically on commits. This page here tells me to do this: REPOS="$1" REV="$2" UUID=`svnlook uuid $REPOS` /usr/bin/wget \ --header "Content-Type:text/plain;charset=UTF-8" \ --post-data "`svnlook changed --revision $REV $REPOS`" \ --output-document "-" \ http://server/hudson/subversion/${UUID}/notifyCommit?rev=$REV The part that I don't know is the address URL given at the bottom of that code snippet. I know the address of my Hudson server, but the /subversion part has me baffled, because on my system that doesn't refer to anything. My Subversion repository belongs somewhere else on the server, not inside Hudson. Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to put as the URL (an example would help greatly)?

• How can I disable 'output escaping' in minidom

  I'm trying to build an xml document from scratch using xml.dom.minidom. Everything was going well until I tried to make a text node with a ® (Registered Trademark) symbol in. My objective is for when I finally hit print mydoc.toxml() this particular node will actually contain a ® symbol. First I tried: import xml.dom.minidom as mdom data = '®' which gives the rather obvious error of: File "C:\src\python\HTMLGen\test2.py", line 3 SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\xae' in file C:\src\python\HTMLGen\test2.py on line 3, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.or g/peps/pep-0263.html for details I have of course also tried changing the encoding of my python script to 'utf-8' using the opening line comment method, but this didn't help. So I thought import xml.dom.minidom as mdom data = '&#174;' #Both accepted xml encodings for registered trademark data = '&reg;' text = mdom.Text() text.data = data print data print text.toxml() But because when I print text.toxml(), the ampersands are being escaped, I get this output: &reg; &amp;reg; My question is, does anybody know of a way that I can force the ampersands not to be escaped in the output, so that I can have my special character reference carry through to the XML document? Basically, for this node, I want print text.toxml() to produce output of &reg; or &#174; in a happy and cooperative way! EDIT 1: By the way, if minidom actually doesn't have this capacity, I am perfectly happy using another module that you can recommend which does. EDIT 2: As Hugh suggested, I tried using data = u'®' (while also using data # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- Python source tags). This almost helped in the sense that it actually caused the ® symbol itself to be outputted to my xml. This is actually not the result I am looking for. As you may have guessed by now (and perhaps I should have specified earlier) this xml document happens to be an HTML page, which needs to work in a browser. So having ® in the document ends up causing rubbish in the browser (® to be precise!). I also tried: data = unichr(174) text.data = data.encode('ascii','xmlcharrefreplace') print text.toxml() But of course this lead to the same origional problem where all that happens is the ampersand gets escaped by .toxml(). My ideal scenario would be some way of escaping the ampersand so that the XML printing function won't "escape" it on my behalf for the document (in other words, achieving my original goal of having &reg; or &#174; appear in the document). Seems like soon I'm going to have to resort to regular expressions! EDIT 2a: Or perhaps not. Seems like getting my html meta information correct <META http-equiv="Content-Type" Content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> could help, but I'm not sure yet how this fits in with the xml structure...

• Nested joins hide table names

  Hi: I have three tables: Suppliers, Parts and Types. I need to join all of them while discriminating columns with the same name (say, "id") in the three tables. I would like to successfully run this query: CREATE VIEW Everything AS SELECT Suppliers.name as supplier, Parts.id, Parts.description, Types.typedesc as type FROM Suppliers JOIN (Parts JOIN Types ON Parts.type_id = Types.id) ON Suppliers.id = Parts.supplier_id; My DBMS (sqlite) complains that "there is not such a column (Parts.id)". I guess it forgets table names once the JOIN is done but then how can I refer to the column id that belongs to the table Parts?

• QuestionOrAnswer model?

  My site has Listings. Users can ask Questions about listings, and the author of the listing can respond with an Answer. However, the Answer might need clarification, so I've made them recursive (you can "answer" an answer). So how do I set up the database? The way I have it now looks like this (in Django-style models): class QuestionOrAnswer(Model): user = ForeignKey(User, related_name='questions') listing = ForeignKey(Listing, related_name='questions') parent = models.ForeignKey('self', null=True, blank=True, related_name='children') message = TextField() But what bugs me is that listing is now an attribute of the answers as well (it doesn't need to be). What happens if the database gets mangled and an answer belongs to a different listing than its parent question? That just doesn't make any sense. We can separate it with polymorphism: QuestionOrAnswer user message created updated Question(QuestionOrAnswer) shipment Answer(QuestionOrAnswer) parent = ForeignKey(QuestionOrAnswer) And that ought to work, but now ever question and answer is split into 2 tables. Is it worth this overhead for clearly defined models?

• Why doesn't C have rotate left/right operators?

  A bit of a philosophical question, I suppose. Hope it belongs here. C language has the standard set of bit-wise operations, including OR, AND, XOR, SHIFT LEFT/RIGHT, NOT. Anyone has an idea why rotate left/rotate right isn't included in the language? These operators are of the same complexity as other bit-wise operators and normally require a single assembly instruction, like the others. Besides, I can think of a lot of uses for rotate operator, probably not less than, say, xor operator - so it sounds a bit strange to me that they aren't included in C along with the rest. Edit: Please stop suggesting implementations of rotation operators. I know how to do that and it's not what the question about.

• View plain text files with different background colors in Mac OSX, for different programming languag

  Hi, I work with Mac OS X Leopard. I usually have 5 or 10 text files opened at the same time with different programming languages; one for a bash script, another for a python one, etc. When I use exposé all of them look the same, so it is difficult to select them. I wonder how could I work with just plain text files in OSX, so when they are opened in an editor the background color changes or some other thign, so when using exposé it is clear to me which window belongs to what language. I thought about inserting some kind of info to the last line of each document, and then creat some applescript that converts it to RTF or someother text document which includes color in bacjground, so then it is opened with textmate or someother app. Do you know a better approach for this?   Linux /proc/meminfo shows a number of memory usage statistics. MemTotal: 4040732 kB MemFree: 23160 kB Buffers: 163340 kB Cached: 3707080 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 1129324 kB Inactive: 2762912 kB There is quite a bit of overlap between them. For example, as far as I understand, there can be active page cache (belongs to "cached" and "active") and inactive page cache ("inactive" + "cached"). What I want to do is to measure "free" memory, but in a way that it includes used pages that are likely to be dropped without a significant impact on overall system's performance. At first, I was inclined to use "free" + "inactive", but Linux's "free" utility uses "free" + "cached" in its "buffer-adjusted" display, so I am curious what a better approach is. When the kernel runs out of memory, what is the priority of pages to drop and what is the more appropriate metric to measure available memory?

It's basically a chat server with the major additional ability to play games. I'd like to create categories of features that are offered to users. My question is, are there any useful standard feature categories? Does not have to be specific to my case, I'm interested in the general case as well. Just to give you an idea of what I'm thinking: functional e.g. play games social e.g. chatting operational e.g. 24/7 service availability I'm entirely unsure if this is the right place to ask, if you know of any better site to ask please don't hesitate to add a comment.

The associations are defined as: Category hasMany Point Point belongsTo Category I would like, when adding Points to my database, to be able to select the category it belongs to from a <select> box, along with the rest of the form data. Where would i need to set the category list and how could i do it? And how would i produce the select box? • Nested sql queries in rails when :has_and_belongst_to_many

  Hello, In my application I the next task that has not already been done by a user. I have Three models, A Book that has many Tasks and then I have a User that has has and belongs to many tasks. The table tasks_users table contains all completed tasks so I need to write a complex query to find the next task to perform. I have came up with two solutions in pure SQL that works, but I cant translate them to rails, thats what I need help with SELECT * FROM `tasks` WHERE `tasks`.`book_id` = @book_id AND `tasks`.`id` NOT IN ( SELECT `tasks_users`.`task_id` FROM `tasks_users` WHERE `tasks_users`.`user_id` = @user_id) ORDER BY `task`.`date` ASC LIMIT 1; and equally without nested select SELECT * FROM tasks LEFT JOIN tasks_users ON tasks_users.tasks_id = task.id AND tasks_users.user_id = @user_id WHERE tasks_users.task_id IS NULL AND tasks.book_id = @book_id LIMIT 1; This is what I Have done in rails with the MetaWhere plugin book.tasks.joins(:users.outer).where(:users => {:id => nil}) but I cant figure out how to get the current user there too, Thanks for any help!

• Where to put to_xls and from_xls in a rails app

  So I have a model that I need to be able to serialize to/read from an Excel(XLS) document. I am a bit of a loss as to where this code actually belongs. My initial thought is that the to_xls is a view, but after poking around and seeing things like (to|from)_xml and (to|from)_json in ActiveRecord, I was wondering if maybe this stuff belonged in the model. Alternatively, does it belong in just a whole separate container somewhere? For what it's worth, users will be downloading models from the site, modifying them in excel, then posting them.

  i want to make my threads content searchable with full text search engines like solr. but i wonder one thing. should i index just the thread.title, thread.body and post.body or should i index username, created date, nr of posts, views, country, region and city too that belongs to thread? i mean when an user search for a thread he will get hits returned containing thread title, 2 lines of body, which user has posted it, creation date, tags, and so on. should i index all this information too? but then it would be pretty much the whole database. or should i just index the 3 first columns i mentioned for full text search. and another question. when an user post a new thread, then i have to immidiately tell solr to add that row? if im not, how would it be searchable?

• Max number of web methods?

  Guys I have a web service in asp.net 2.0 that has 234 methods. It seems that when I add another method the site does not compile in VS2005 until I remove one first. I get a message saying that the new method I just added does not exist in a file that belongs in the Microsoft.Net/.../Temporary Files directory. I have restarted IIS, closed down VS2005, removed all files from this temp directory but to no avail. The only way to get the code to compile is to remove another one so as to keep 234 methods.... I can consistency replicate this behaviour so it cannot be my code. Now I know this seems strange but it is true! One other strange thing is that exactly 100 of the method names begin with the word GetXXXyyyZZZ Has anyone else experienced problems with the maximum number of methods that are allowed in a web service?   I have a three models: listing, category, and site. There is a many to many relationship between listing and site and there is a many to many relationship between listing and category. A listing thus belongs to one or more sites and one or more categories (a listing can appear on multiple sites and multiple categories). Given a site id and a category id, I want a set of all the listings. I understand how to get the listings from a site id (listings = site.listings) and how to get the listings from a category id (listings = category.listings), but how do I get the triple join of the set of listings from both a site id and category id? The sql would look something like (sit_id and cat_id are input): select l.name from listings l, categories_listings cl, listings_sites, ls where cl.category_id = cat_id and ls.site_id = sit_id and cl.listing_id = l.id and ls.listing_id = l.id Thanks in advance

• Most efficient way for a lookup/search in a huge list (python)

  Hey guys, -- I just parsed a big file and I created a list containing 42.000 strings/words. I want to query [against this list] to check if a given word/string belongs to it. So my question is: What is the most efficient way for such a lookup? A first approach is to sort the list [list.sort()] and then just use the if word in list: print 'word' -- which is really trivial and I am sure there is a better way to do it. My goal is to apply a fast lookup that finds whether a given string is in this list or not. If you have any ideas of another data structure, they are welcome. Yet, I want to avoid for now more sophisticated data-structures like Tries etc. I am interested in hearing ideas (or tricks) about fast lookups or any other python library methods that might do the search faster than the simple 'in'.   Hello there, I've got a requirement for parsing PHP files in C#. We essentially require some of the devs in another country to upload PHP files and once uploaded we need to check the php files and get a list of all the methods and classes/functions etc. I thought of using a regex but I can't workout if a function belongs to a class etc, so I was wondering if theres already something 'out there' that will parse out PHP files and spit out its functions (I'm trying to avoid writing a full blow AST implementation). Does anyone have any idea? I looked at Coco/R but I couldn't find a PHP grammar file. I'm using .NET 2.0 and C#.

Customer usually has multiple phone numbers, so when i run select statement on customer 101, i will get multiple records due to the multiple phone numbers. As you see below all the "Phone" and "Fax" field belongs to CustomerPhone table. These are considered as two records in the CustomerPhone table whereas the rest of fields relate to Customer table which is a single record. What should i do to fill Phone and Fax field in this case? Should i run select statement on CustomerPhone first and then run select statement on Customer?

  When presenting a view controller that has toolbar items, is it possible for the toolbar to slide in with the view controller (i.e. slide in from the right) as opposed to it sliding from the bottom? In the view controller that is being presented, I've got the toolbar being shown within the -viewWillAppear: method, but the toolbar is being slid up from the bottom of the screen as opposed to it looking like it belongs to the view controller. - (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [self.navigationController setToolbarHidden:NO animated:YES]; ... }

• What can I use the Google App Engine for?

  This question possibly doesn't belong here. We'll see how the answers pan out, if this doesn't belong here please move it to where it belongs. I'm following the getting started guide for Google App Engine, and I'm seeing what it can and can't do. Basically, I'm seeing it's very similar to an MVC pattern. You create your model, then create a View that uses that Model to display information. Not only that, but it uses a controller of some kind in this fashion: application = webapp.WSGIApplication( [('/', MainPage)], debug=True) My question is, why would you use this Google App Engine if it's the same as using a number of other MVC frameworks? Is the only benefit you gain the load balancing being handled by Google automagically? What is a good example of something you would need the App Engine for? I'm trying to learn, so thanks for the discussion.

• MySQL query for initial filling of order column

  Sorry for vague question title. I've got a table containing huge list of, say, products, belonging to different categories. There's a foreign key column indicating which category that particular product belongs to. I.e. in "bananas" row category might be 3 which indicates "fruits". Now I added additional column "order" which is for display order within that particular category. I need to do initial ordering. Since the list is big, I dont wanna change every row by hand. Is it possible to do with one or two queries? I dont care what initial order is as long as it starts with 1 and goes up. I cant do something like SET order = id because id counts from 1 up regardless of product category and order must start anew from 1 up for every different category.
