    - by Dave Campbell
In this all-submittal Issue: Michael Washington(-2-), Ian T. Lackey(-2-, -3-), Sandrino Di Mattia, Colin Eberhardt(-2-), and Antoni Dol. Above the Fold: Silverlight: "A Style for the Silverlight CoverFlow Control Slider" Antoni Dol WP7: "Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 1 Phone Home" (and the other two parts) Ian T. Lackey Silverlight/WPF: "A Simplified Grid Markup for Silverlight and WPF" Colin Eberhardt Shoutouts: Dennis Doomen has updated his Coding Guidelines and provided a new WhitePaper, A4 cheat sheet, and VS2010 rule sets: December Update of the Coding Guidelines for C# 3.0 and C# 4.0 From SilverlightCream.com: Windows Phone 7: Saving Data when Keyboard is visible MIchael Washington takes a possible desktop approach to a data-saving issue on WP7... good solution, and one of the commenters brought up another. Windows Phone 7 View Model (MVVM) ApplicationBar Since I'm catching up, there's another post by Michael Washington... this one is looking at the WP7 ApplicationBar, and issues if you're trying to stay MVVM-proper. Michael gets around that by creating the AppBar with a behavior, and shares with all of us! Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 1 Phone Home Ian T. Lackey has begun a series where he's packaging common tasks into reusable behaviors. First up is a phone dialer launching action that can be dropped on any control in your app. Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 2 Binding & Browsing In his next post, Ian T. Lackey digs into the WebBrowserTask and provides a behavior allowing you to launch a browser session straight to an URL from any WP7 control. Getting the right behaviors in your Phone 7 App – Part 3 Email ‘em In his last post (all in one day), Ian T. Lackey looks at EmailComposeTask, ending up with a behavior to pre-populate EmailAddress and Subject. Cracking a Microsoft contest or why Silverlight-WCF security is important Sandrino Di Mattia was working on an app while also having a page up for a MSDN/TechNet game, and noticed some interesting WCF traffic that he was easily able to get access to. A Simplified Grid Markup for Silverlight and WPF Colin Eberhardt built us all an attached property for the Grid control that bails us out from the ugly layout we always have to put into position... oh, also for WPF! #uksnow #silverlight The Movie! – Happy Christmas Colin Eberhardt also took some time to have fun with his Twitter/BingMaps mashup for the UKSnow hashtag... you can now playback the snowfall reports, and mouse-over the snowflakes to see the original tweet... very cool stuff, Colin! A Style for the Silverlight CoverFlow Control Slider Antoni Dol got tired of the Silverlight Slider in the CoverFlow control and crafted a very nice-looking style for the Slider ... check it out and grab the source. • Should I be looking for an alternative to Zen Cart as my business grows?

    - by MarkS
I created a business website for a family business which is growing. It's my family, and I'm a software developer, but I don't want to rebuild the wheels or be a shopping cart programmer. For this business, I need the web store to "just work", but... it gets complicated... There are two parts of this business website. One of them is driven by Wordpress and I use the awesome Thesis theme. This is modern, flexible, and saves me a lot of time from doing custom coding and styling. I couldn't be more pleased with this arrangement. The other part of the site is a Zen Cart store. It's administration and it's flexibility is frustrating and archaic Web 1.0. For the past few years, I keep hearing that the developers are working on a 2.0 version of Zen Cart, but they haven't communicated anything significant in the past few years other than to say, "When it's ready, we'll let you know." What I'm looking for in a cart, I would need to install 6-10 additional mods, and would need to do a lot of custom coding. I'm now willing to pay for a top-notch e-commerce solution for a small business that we can grow up into a larger business over time. Requirements: Extremely flexible shipping that let's us set up rules per product/category, tables of rates, calculated rates, max package weighs, etc. (flexibility like that available with CEON Advance Shipping Module for Zen Cart Coupons and gift certificates Manual order entry for phone orders Multi-channel support (We also sell on Amazon, eBay, use Google Base and we want to maintain one set of inventory and have it kept current) Decent SEO features Reviews and star-ratings on products Easy social networking features for sharing, following, liking, etc) Easy integration with AdWords and analytics tracking Modern and very usable product and store administration (Like I was saying, I'm spoiled by Wordpress and Thesis) At the end of the day, I don't care if it's a hosted solution or if I have to host it myself. I just want something that is going to stay up-to-date, regularly be maintained and improved, and if I have to update it, things like the one-click update present in Wordpress is something it has to have. Professional Webmasters, if you had to run a store / website, but you had to spend your time focusing on your sales and marketing efforts rather than diffing php files and copying and tweaking them to change even the slightest details of your site, what would you choose?

  • Let the RAM improves performance

    - by user1717079
I have a low profile machine but with a lot of fast RAM, 4 Gb, which is really an amount of memory that i probably will never use, not even an half, since i just use this machine for coding and browsing the web. The HDD is really slow and so the overall performance are bad when booting, caching or starting new program, I'm wondering if Ubuntu can provide some setting or utility to solve this situation and let my system rely more on the RAM usage.

  • Important Differences Between SEO and SEM

Though both may be integral parts of the Search Engine cosmos, there still are huge differences between SEO and SEM in terms of features and the way in which they get implemented. Many have said that SEO India is a part or a division of SEM India. SEO envelopes factors such as meta tags, keywords and their density, titles and HTML coding where as SEM encompasses factors such as search engine submissions, directory submissions, paid inclusions and certain others.

  • Code Style - Do you prefer to return from a function early or just use an IF statement?

    - by Rachel
I've often written this sort of function in both formats, and I was wondering if one format is preferred over another, and why. public void SomeFunction(bool someCondition) { if (someCondition) { // Do Something } } or public void SomeFunction(bool someCondition) { if (!someCondition) return; // Do Something } I usually code with the first one since that is the way my brain works while coding, although I think I prefer the 2nd one since it takes care of any error handling right away and I find it easier to read

  • Inserting data to database from Android

    - by Angel
I have to build an application where the requirement is that my clients will send data from their Android device and I have to save that data to a database. I have done the part of coding that inserts data from Android emulator to my XAMPP database on localhost, now I have to implement the real thing. How can I connect the devices where my application will be installed to the XAMPP database I have created so that the data they send can be inserted into it?

  • What is enterprise software, exactly?

    - by good_computer
I don't understand the difference between "normal" software and enterprise software. Even after reading these... "Enterprise Software" on Wikipedia "Enterprise Software Is Sexy Again" on Techcrunch "The Great Enterprise Software Swindle" on Coding Horror I can't really wrap my head around the real differences. Is there any difference at all between the two? Why do people say enterprise software sucks?

  • Leading an offshore team

    - by Chuck Conway
I'm in a position where I am leading two teams of 4. Both teams are located in India. I am on the west coast of the U.S. I'm finding leading remote teams challenging: First, their command of the English language is weak. Second, I'm having difficultly understanding them through their accents. Third is timing, we are 12 hours apart. We use Skype to communicate. I have a month to get the project done. We've burned through a week just setting up the environments. At this point I'm considering working their hours, 11p PDT to 7a PDT, to get them up to speed, so that I can get the project off the ground. A 12 hour lag time is too much. I'm looking for steps I can take to be successful at leading an offshore team. Update The offshore team's primary task is coding, of course, most coding tasks do involve some design work. The offshore team's are composed of one lead, 2 mid level (4 to 5 years) developers and a junior (~2 years) developer. The project is classic waterfall. We've handed the offshore team a business and a technical design document. We are trying to manage the offshore in an agile way. We have daily conference calls with them and I'm requiring the teams to send me a daily scrum in the form of an email answering the following questions: What did I do today? What am I going to do tomorrow? What do I need from Chuck so I can do my job tomorrow? There is some ambiguity in the tasks. The intent was to give them enough direction for them to develop the task with out writing the code for them. I don't have a travel budget. I am using Fogbugz to track the tasks. Each task has been entered into Fogbugz and given a priority. Each team member has access to FogBugz and can choose what task they wish to complete. Related question: What can we do to improve the way outsourcing/offshoring works? Update 2 I've decided that I can not talk to the team once a day. I must work with them. Starting tonight I've started working the same hours they are. This makes me available to them when they have questions. It also allows me to gain their trust and respect. • What modern design pattern / software engineering books for Java SE 6 do you recommend ?

    - by Scott Davies
Hi, I am very familiar with Java 6 SE language features and am now looking for modern books that cover design patterns in Java for beginners as well as software engineering books that discuss architectures, algorithms and best practices in Java coding (sort of like the Effective C# books). I am aware of the classic GoF design patterns book, however, I'd like a more modern reference that takes advantage of the features of Java 6 SE. What books would you recommend ? Thanks, Scott

  • Strengthening code with possibly useless exception handling

    - by rdurand
Is it a good practice to implement useless exception handling, just in case another part of the code is not coded correctly? Basic example A simple one, so I don't loose everybody :). Let's say I'm writing an app that will display a person's information (name, address, etc.), the data being extracted from a database. Let's say I'm the one coding the UI part, and someone else is writing the DB query code. Now imagine that the specifications of your app say that if the person's information is incomplete (let's say, the name is missing in the database), the person coding the query should handle this by returning "NA" for the missing field. What if the query is poorly coded and doesn't handle this case? What if the guy who wrote the query handles you an incomplete result, and when you try to display the informations, everything crashes, because your code isn't prepared to display empty stuff? This example is very basic. I believe most of you will say "it's not your problem, you're not responsible for this crash". But, it's still your part of the code which is crashing. Another example Let's say now I'm the one writing the query. The specifications don't say the same as above, but that the guy writing the "insert" query should make sure all the fields are complete when adding a person to the database to avoid inserting incomplete information. Should I protect my "select" query to make sure I give the UI guy complete informations? The questions What if the specifications don't explicitly say "this guy is the one in charge of handling this situation"? What if a third person implements another query (similar to the first one, but on another DB) and uses your UI code to display it, but doesn't handle this case in his code? Should I do what's necessary to prevent a possible crash, even if I'm not the one supposed to handle the bad case? I'm not looking for an answer like "(s)he's the one responsible for the crash", as I'm not solving a conflict here, I'd like to know, should I protect my code against situations it's not my responsibility to handle? Here, a simple "if empty do something" would suffice. In general, this question tackles redundant exception handling. I'm asking it because when I work alone on a project, I may code 2-3 times a similar exception handling in successive functions, "just in case" I did something wrong and let a bad case come through.

  • viable part-time career in IT/programming?

    - by Rider
Hi, I'd like to ask for some career advice from you people. Is there a viable job/career that can be done in programming/IT for the long term? Right now, I am thinking about website (PHP?) developer path. My background: I have a degree in computer science and have been a programmer/system analyst for almost 10 years. Lately I took a big break from programming and studied for a B.arch. degree (yes architecture), only to discover that architecture offers zero (0) jobs where I'm from, for 3 years already (and no, I am not going to move and the grass in not greener in other places). I have never been particularly interested in programming, in fact I was bored by it. But I was always quite good at both programming and system analysis, and very valued by practically all my employers. On the other hand, I have never been valued or offered a good job in any other field (although I can do many things, like design, architecture, translations, documentation, teaching, etc etc.) I guess the human component has been always more important for me in programming jobs - I value all the good people I worked with, but not projects. However, I have about zero skills or desire to be a project manager. I also have close to zero skills for selling myself. I like it best when I can do "my thing", have my niche, have an ownership of some project. Right now my career perspective is to do part time programming and to part time teach yoga. I have already started the yoga teaching part. Do you think that part time programming is viable? And what niche works best for that? I have considered web development, QA, or software development in a company like I did before. However, my fear is that when you do programming part-time, you get the most boring coding work, only to see your colleagues move to more interesting projects and up their respective career ladders. I also fear that part-timers are not especially needed either. And, since I don't share much enthusiasm at programming, I'd rather not be around young programmers boiling with geeky enthusiasm about coding, but rather QA mindset with people from different backgrounds and life paths might work better for me. Thanks for any advice, --Rider

If you're looking to make your website stand out but you reached your limits at HTML coding, then your best bet is to hire a talented flash developer. Flash is the platform of choice for multimedia online and it's rare to find a popular website that doesn't make some use of the software. It's behind almost every online video service, from YouTube to the BBC's iPlayer and it's what makes most of Facebook's fancier features possible. Even simple display advertisements make use of flash for their animated features.
