  I'm trying to create a direct connection to a hardware device via RS232 serial connection. Am using a USB to Serial adapter and works fine in WinXP but the option seems to have disappeared in Win7. This is the only connection option available for this piece of hardware so I have no choice. Currently have a netbook with WinXP installed purely for interfacing with this hardware. In XP it was just a matter of creating an "Advanced connection" and then "Directly to another computer" etc, I can find no such options in Win7.

• Looking for WYSIWYG tool to create and edit HTML5 based presentations (slides)

  There are a lot of different implementations for HTML5 based slide presentations out there, like Google Slides or S5. But all that I have seen so far, seem to need a person being able to (and willing to) read and write HTML-Code. My company still uses Powerpoint, but some people are quite unhappy about its limitedness, e.g. the lack of possibilites to embed animation (other than just appear/disappear) without using flash. I'd love to suggest a state-of-the-art solution based on HTML5, but I don't even need to think about suggesting a solution where the project people need a techie to add or edit the content of a slide. I am not looking for an editor for non-technies to create complex HTML5/javascript based animations, of course, those should be done by a developer... basically non-technies should be capable of doing the stuff they are doing in powerpoint now.   I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station. • Setting up Gitosis, where to create the repos?

  I'm trying to setup Gitosis on CentOS 6.2 but have some doubts/problems about it. I read this docs here, here and here but it's unclear to me where to configure where repositories are created. My server has a partition /data where I create a directory and called /gitrepos. I want all the repos created under that directory. By default if I run the command: gitosis-init < /home/reynierpm/reynierpm.pub I get this Initialized empty Git repository in /root/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/ Reinitialized existing Git repository in /root/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/ And I want this repos created under /data/gitrepos, any help? What I want to do is create a VHD of my physical XP machine install Windows 7 and then operate out of my Virtual PC while I take the time to configure Windows 7. Is this possible to do? • Unable to create a Windows 7 system image of a failing hard drive

  The hard disk of my one year old T400 Thinkpad has started failing periodic hardware tests. I get a "Targeted Read Test Failed" error. The "SMART short self test" times out. I am now trying to create a Windows 7 System image of the hard disk but it fails without giving any specific error messages. I tried using Comodo Backup but got an error (code 101117) there as well. I have copied the important files in Dropbox but would like to take a full System backup as I have plenty of software installed on the machine. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can take a backup of the system image ?

  I'm currently wanting to deploy a setup to around 300 Macs. I have most of it scripted, but I'm having trouble creating a working alias to a samba share from the command line. I tried copying it from one Mac to another, but it loses its status as an alias, and instead OSX opens it in TextEdit. From a hexdump, it also looks like it has machine-specific information. So, say I wanted to create an alias to 'smb://server/share' on the desktop from the command line, how would I do that? I have also tried a tell in AppleScript, but it complained about the syntax (specifically, too many slashes, seemingly taking about smb://). Thanks.

  We have some email archiving that is dumping all the emails into a directory. Because of some performance reasons with the server, I want to setup an automated task that will run a script once a day and if there is more than 3,000 (or whatever number) of files in the main directory, create a new directory with the date and move all the main directory files into it. I'm sure someone has already written something similar, so if anyone could point me at it that would be great. Batch file or Powershell would both be fine.

  I am creating a service called TorCompute which allows for creating virtual Tor Hidden Service servers on my infrastructure (I say infrastructure, by that I mean just the 3x 32GB RAM machines waiting to be purchased). What I would like to be able to do is for users to log on, access the web interface and spin up a VM with a variable about of RAM/Disk Space. I've written the PHP for logging in and have a nice web interface, just I need the code to actually create them! How would I go about doing this? • Create PDF with internal hyperlinks

  I have an Excel workbook with an index page containing a series of images, that are each hyperlinked to different worksheets. Can anybody suggest how I can publish this to PDF so that the hyperlinks work in the PDF? When I publish or use PDF Factory, the hyperlinks are not preserved (and bookmarks aren't created for that matter either). I would prefer to do this with inbuilt functionality or free tools, though any suggestions welcome. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be with Excel. Publishing from powerpoint would be almost as good, and failing that, any easy solution which allows me to create a PDF containing clickable images that takes one to internal bookmarks might also be a workaround.

• Cannot create persistent "open with" association for Photoshop CS4

  I'm trying to fix a computer from a friend, which has for some unknonwn reason installed the 64bit and 32bit version of CS4. The 64bit version does not work, the 32bit does. However it seems that the 64bit version was the first installed one, associations to the .psd files are going to the 64bit version. There seems no way to create an association with only the 32bit version. When I select open with` and I browse to the 32bit version and select open, it does not get added to the list of applications? Update: Unfortunately the problem just went away. It's annoying as the root cause is likely never to be found, I'm accepting Fopedush's answer for this "detailness".

  For some time now, when buying new computers (laptops in particular) from big name brands-like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA, etc.-most of them come with a "rescue" or "restore" partion instead of installation CD/DVD. Said partitions have everything needed to rebuild the factory installed OS, unfortunately they also include all crapware that the OEM installed on the machine. Is it there a way to custom create such a partition with out all the useless software included?. They seem quite appealing considering they only use about 10GB-20GB of space and offer the pretty much the same functionality as a complete system image/backup.

  Hi, I have 2 machines. Both running CentOS. Box1 is webserver with apache, php. Box2 is mysql, and file storage. The files will only be accessible from Box1 within the webapp. I'd like to somehow create a symlink or somesuch on box1 to a folder on box2 where uploaded files can be stored and retrieved. Security in mind, what would be the best way to go about linking these 2 boxes up in a transparent (to apache) way? NB: the boxes are connected directly to each other via a crossover cable; no lan access to box2. Much thanks!

  I've tryed to run VM in Xen 4.2 using xl command (for what I get this should be standard toolstack, while xm is deprecated). In this case I've the following configuration file kernel = '/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/boot/vmlinuz-linux' ramdisk = '/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/boot/initramfs-linux.img' name = "domU_Arch_linux" memory = "512" root = '/dev/xvda1 ro' disk = ['file:/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/arch_linux_kernel.img,xvda1,w'] vif = ['mac=aa:::10:11:f1,ip=192.168.0.2,bridge=xenbr0'] when I try to start the virtual machine with xl create it seems it works (it also bring up the vif interfaces) but if I try to connect via xl console it gives an error: xenconsole: Could not read tty from store: No such file or directory the fun fact is that the I've the problem inverse using xend/xm (in that case xend doesn't bring up vif interfaces but activate console). Does anyone have any suggestion?

  Using CentOS 6, logged in to MySQL as root, entering the command: create user 'user123' identified by 'pass123'; works fine. But when I try and give that user super user privileges with: grant all on *.* to 'user123' identified by 'pass123'; I get the error: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) Then select * from mysql.user; shows that root has Y in all columns, so should have all privileges. I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me find why root is unable to grant privileges as I can't see why it wouldn't be working. Thanks

  I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command. Can you tell me how to do that?

• Is it possible to re-create the Windows 8.1 install image after the upgrade

  I have downloaded and installed the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows store. The hardware was a 64-bit Toshiba P50 laptop. I need to upgrade a second P50 and wish to do so without another 3.6Gb download (I tried the instructions here but never got the chance to create the installation media, nor was I asked for a product key). I saw mention on superuser of creating USB rescue media after installation and using that to clone the upgrade onto another machine. Is this likely to be a viable option?

The Client should be able to connect to the server using L2TP and should get an IP Adress from a private Range (lets say 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200 and a subnetmask of 255.255.255.0). Now each client connected to the server should be able to ping another connected client. e.g. 192.168.1.123 <- 192.168.1.145 via RAS via the server. Is this possible? • Problem transferring file to FTP server - 503 Could not create file

  I try to transfer a file from SSIS package to a FTP server provided by my client. When I try connecting and transfer using a FTP tool (WinSCP) manually it works fine and file was transferred. But when i use the ftp command in command prompt and try to transfer using "send" command i get an error "553 could not create file". This also happens from SSIS package. I'm not in control of the FTP server but if anyone can provide a solution I can pass it to the admin or anything to be done from my end?

To make it all I only have a laptop with Dual-Core 2.10Ghz, 3 GB RAM, 50 GB free space and Windows 7 on it.
