  • Painted JPanel won't show up in JFrame

    - by javawarrior
    When I run my code, I expect to see a JPanel in my JFrame, but nothing shows up. I had a button in the frame, and it shows up. But the JPanel doesn't show up, I even colored it in red. Here is the code for my JPanel: import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.JPanel; public class graphic extends JPanel { private static final long serialVersionUID = -3458717449092499931L; public Game game; public graphic(Game game){ this.game = game; this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(400,400)); this.setBackground(Color.RED); } public void paintComponent(Graphics g){ for (Line l:game.mirrors){ g.setColor(Color.BLACK); g.drawLine(l.start.x, l.start.y, l.end.x, l.end.y); } } } And my JFrame code: import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.event.*; import java.util.Timer; import java.util.TimerTask; import javax.swing.*; public class Viewer implements ActionListener { public JFrame frame; public JButton drawShoot; public boolean draw; public Game game; public graphic graphic; public TimerTask timert; public Timer timer; public Viewer(){ draw = true; game = new Game(); } public static void main(String args[]){ Viewer v = new Viewer(); v.setup(); } public void setup(){ frame = new JFrame("Laser Stimulator"); drawShoot = new JButton("Edit Mode"); graphic = new graphic(game); graphic.repaint(); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setBounds(300, 300, 600, 600); Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane(); SpringLayout layout = new SpringLayout(); contentPane.setLayout(layout); drawShoot.addActionListener(this); timert = new TimerTask() { @Override public void run() { } }; timer =new Timer(); timer.scheduleAtFixedRate(timert, 0, 1000/30); contentPane.add(graphic); layout.putConstraint(SpringLayout.NORTH, graphic, 0, SpringLayout.NORTH, contentPane); layout.putConstraint(SpringLayout.WEST, graphic, 0, SpringLayout.WEST, contentPane); frame.setVisible(true); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { if (e.getSource()==drawShoot){ draw = !draw; drawShoot.setText((draw)?"Edit Mode":"Shoot Mode"); } } }

  • Problem displaying contents of a class in Java

    - by LuckySlevin
    My problem is i have a class and in it there is a list of elements of another class. public class Branch { private ArrayList<Player> players = new ArrayList<Player>(); String brName; public Branch() {} public void setBr(String brName){this.brName = brName;} public String getBr(){return brName;} public ArrayList<Player> getPlayers() { return players; } public void setPlayers(ArrayList<Player> players) { this.players =new ArrayList<Player>(players); } } public class Player { private String name; private String pos; private Integer salary; private Integer number; public Player(String name, String pos, Integer salary, Integer number) { this.name = name; this.pos = pos; this.salary = salary; this.number = number; } public Player(){} public String getName() { return name; } public String getPos() { return pos; } public Integer getSalary() { return salary; } public Integer getNumber() { return number; } public void setName(String name) { this.name = name; } public void setPos(String pos) { this.pos = pos; } public void setSalary(Integer salary) { this.salary = salary; } public void setNumber(Integer number) { this.number = number; } } My problem is to print the players of a Branch with their name,pos,salary,number. For this i tried this simply : String p1,p2; int a1,a2; p1 = input.readLine(); p2 = input.readLine(); a1 = Integer.parseInt(input.readLine()); a2 = Integer.parseInt(input.readLine()); players[0].setName(p1); players[0].setPos(p2); players[0].setSalary(a1); players[0].setNumber(a2); ptmp.add(players[0]); myBranch[0].setPlayers(ptmp); System.out.println(myBranch[0].brName + " " + myBranch[0].getPlayers()); I wrote this just to try how to display. I created an array of Players, and Branches so they already defined. The problem is getPlayers() doesn't give me any result. What is the way to do this?

  • Minimum permissions to COM Object to Instantiate running as LocalService

    - by Paul Farry
    I'm writing a .NET Service that creates a COM object. If I run the Service as the Logged on user (everything is fine). If I run the Service as LocalSystem, everything is fine. If I run the Service as LocalService, then I get an AccessDeniedException when trying to instantiate the COM Object. I've come up with the following block to grant the necessary permissions and it appears to work correctly, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something regarding the COM rules. Private Sub SetAccessToRockeyRegistry() Using reg As RegistryKey = Microsoft.Win32.Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("CLSID\{EE0680D3-AAC3-446B-AFD7-F9DE2D3E28FB}", True) Dim sec As RegistrySecurity sec = reg.GetAccessControl Dim ar As RegistryAccessRule Dim sid As SecurityIdentifier sid = New SecurityIdentifier(WellKnownSidType.LocalServiceSid, Nothing) ar = New RegistryAccessRule(sid, RegistryRights.ReadKey Or RegistryRights.EnumerateSubKeys Or RegistryRights.QueryValues, AccessControlType.Allow) sec.AddAccessRule(ar) ar = New RegistryAccessRule(sid, RegistryRights.ReadKey Or RegistryRights.EnumerateSubKeys Or RegistryRights.QueryValues, _ InheritanceFlags.ObjectInherit Or InheritanceFlags.ContainerInherit, PropagationFlags.InheritOnly Or PropagationFlags.NoPropagateInherit, AccessControlType.Allow) sec.AddAccessRule(ar) reg.SetAccessControl(sec) End Using End Sub

  • Eager loading vs. many queries with PHP, SQLite

    - by Mike
    I have an application that has an n+1 query problem, but when I implemented a way to load the data eagerly, I found absolutely no performance gain. I do use an identity map, so objects are only created once. Here's a benchmark of ~3000 objects. first query + first object creation: 0.00636100769043 sec. memory usage: 190008 bytes iterate through all objects (queries + objects creation): 1.98003697395 sec. memory usage: 7717116 bytes And here's one when I use eager loading. query: 0.0881109237671 sec. memory usage: 6948004 bytes object creation: 1.91053009033 sec. memory usage: 12650368 bytes iterate through all objects: 1.96605396271 sec. memory usage: 12686836 bytes So my questions are Is SQLite just magically lightning fast when it comes to small queries? (I'm used to working with MySQL.) Does this just seem wrong to anyone? Shouldn't eager loading have given much better performance?

  • Methods for deep cloning objects in C#

How to implement a deep copy right in the base class?

  • BindAttribute, Exclude nested properties for complex types

    - by David Board
    I have a 'Stream' model: public class Stream { public int ID { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(50, ErrorMessage = "Stream name cannot be longer than 50 characters.")] public string Name { get; set; } [Required] [DataType(DataType.Url)] public string URL { get; set; } [Required] [Display(Name="Service")] public int ServiceID { get; set; } public virtual Service Service { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Event> Events { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Monitor> Monitors { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<AlertRule> AlertRules { get; set; } } For the 'create' view for this model, I have made a view model to pass some additional information to the view: public class StreamCreateVM { public Stream Stream { get; set; } public SelectList ServicesList { get; set; } public int SelectedService { get; set; } } Here is my create post action: [HttpPost] [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] public ActionResult Create([Bind(Include="Stream, Stream.Name, Stream.ServiceID, SelectedService")] StreamCreateVM viewModel) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { db.Streams.Add(viewModel.Stream); db.SaveChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index", "Service", new { id = viewModel.Stream.ServiceID }); } return View(viewModel); } Now, this all works, apart from the [Bind(Include="Stream, Stream.Name, Stream.ServiceID, SelectedService")] bit. I can't seem to Include or Exclude properties within a nested object.

  • Abstract Base Class or Class?

    - by Mohit Deshpande
    For my semester project, my team and I are supposed to make a .jar file (library, not runnable) that contains a game development framework and demonstrate the concepts of OOP. Its supposed to be a FRAMEWORK and another team is supposed to use our framework and vice-versa. So I want to know how we should start. We thought of several approaches: 1. Start with a plain class public class Enemy { public Enemy(int x, int y, int health, int attack, ...) { ... } ... } public class UserDefinedClass extends Enemy { ... } 2. Start with an abstract class that user-defined enemies have to inherit abstract members public abstract class Enemy { public Enemy(int x, int y, int health, int attack, ...) { ... } public abstract void draw(); public abstract void destroy(); ... } public class UserDefinedClass extends Enemy { ... public void draw() { ... } public void destroy() { ... } } 3. Create a super ABC (Abstract Base Class) that ALL inherit from public abstract class VectorEntity { ... } public abstract class Enemy extends VectorEntity { ... } public class Player extends VectorEntity { ... } public class UserDefinedClass extends Enemy { ... } Which should I use? Or is there a better way?

  • Nhibernate/Hibernate, lookup tables and object design

    - by Simon G
    Hi, I've got two tables. Invoice with columns CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID (CustomerID and InvoiceDate make up a composite key) and InvoiceType with InvoiceTypeID and InvoiceTypeName columns. I know I can create my objects like: public class Invoice { public virtual int CustomerID { get; set; } public virtual DateTime InvoiceDate { get; set; } public virtual decimal Value { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceType InvoiceType { get; set; } } public class InvoiceType { public virtual InvoiceTypeID { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeName { get; set; } } So the generated sql would look something like: SELECT CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID FROM Invoice WHERE CustomerID = x AND InvoiceDate = y SELECT InvoiceTypeID, InvoiceTypeName FROM InvoiceType WHERE InvoiceTypeID = z But rather that having two select queries executed to retrieve the data I would rather have one. I would also like to avoid using child object for simple lookup lists. So my object would look something like: public class Invoice { public virtual int CustomerID { get; set; } public virtual DateTime InvoiceDate { get; set; } public virtual decimal Value { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeID { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeName { get; set; } } And my sql would look something like: SELECT CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID FROM Invoice INNER JOIN InvoiceType ON Invoice.InvoiceTypeID = InvoiceType.InvoiceTypeID WHERE CustomerID = x AND InvoiceDate = y My question is how do I create the mapping for this? I've tried using join but this tried to join using CustomerID and InvoiceDate, am I missing something obvious? Thanks

  • XML serialization of a collection in C#

    - by Archana R
    I have two classes as follows: public class Info { [XmlAttribute] public string language; public int version; public Book book; public Info() { } public Info(string l, int v, string author, int quantity, int price) { this.language = l; this.version = v; book = new Book(author, quantity, price); } } public class Book { [XmlAttribute] public string author; public int quantity; public int price; [XmlIgnore]public int total; public NameValueCollection nvcollection = new NameValueCollection(); public Book() { } public Book(string author, int quantity, int price) { this.author = author; this.quantity = quantity; this.price = price; total = quantity * price; nvcollection.Add(author, price.ToString()); } } I have created an ArrayList which adds the two instances of Info class as follows: FileStream fs = new FileStream("SerializedInfo.XML", FileMode.Create); List<Info> arrList = new List<Info>(); XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(typeof(List<Info>)); Info pObj = new Info("ABC", 3, "DEF", 2, 6); Info pObj1 = new Info("GHI", 4, "JKL", 2, 8); arrList.Add(pObj); arrList.Add(pObj1); xs.Serialize(fs, arrList); fs.Close(); But when I try to serialize, I get an exception as "There was an error reflecting type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1[ConsoleApplicationSerialization.Info]'." Can anyone help me with it? Also, instead of namevaluecollection, which type of structure can i use?

  • Diamond problem in C++

    - by Jack
    I know the diamond problem. I am using gcc compiler. I have some scenarios I need explanation about. 1) class A{ public: virtual void eat(){cout<<"A eat\n";} }; class B:public A{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"B eat\n";}}; class C:public A{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"C eat\n";}}; class D:public B,C{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"D eat\n";}}; int main() { A * a = new D(); a->eat(); getch(); return 0; } Why doesn't this work? 2) class A{ public: void eat(){cout<<"A eat\n";} }; class B:virtual public A{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"B eat\n";}}; class C:virtual public A{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"C eat\n";}}; class D: public B,C{ public: void eat(){ cout<<"D eat\n";}}; int main() { A * a = new D(); a->eat(); getch(); return 0; } When I do this what happens in the background. How does the ambiguity get removed. Is the concept of vtables involved here?

  • Why are my Fluent NHibernate SubClass Mappings generating redundant columns?

    - by Brook
    I'm using Fluent NHibernate 1.x build 694, built against NH 3.0 I have the following entities public abstract class Card { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual string Name { get; set; } public virtual string Description { get; set; } public virtual Product Product { get; set; } public virtual Sprint Sprint { get; set; } } public class Story:Card { public virtual double Points { get; set; } public virtual int Priority { get; set; } public virtual IList<Task> Tasks { get; set; } } And the following mappings public class CardMap:ClassMap<Card> { public CardMap() { Id(c => c.Id) .Index("Card_Id"); Map(c => c.Name) .Length(50) .Not.Nullable(); Map(c => c.Description) .Length(1024) .Not.Nullable(); References(c=>c.Product) .Not.Nullable(); References(c=>c.Sprint) .Nullable(); } } public class StoryMap : SubclassMap<Story> { public StoryMap() { Map(s => s.Points); Map(s => s.Priority); HasMany(s => s.Tasks); } } When I generate my Schema, the tables are created as follows Card --------- Id Name Description Product_id Sprint_id Story ------------ Card_id Points Priority Product_id Sprint_id What I would have expected would have been to see the columns Product_id and Sprint_id ONLY in the Card table, not the Story table. What am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?

  • ASP.NET MVC Patterns

    - by Sam Striano
    Hello, I am fairly new to MVC, but after playing with it (MVC 3/Razor), I am hooked. I have a few questions: 1) What is the best, or most widely used pattern to develop MVC apps in? Repository, DDD, UOW? 2) I am using the Entity Framework 4, so could some please explain to me or point me to a good source that will explain the Repository Pattern w/EF4? Doesn't EF4 take place as the business layer and the data access layer? Does the Repository Pattern even provide a benefit? 3) Also, one last question, could someone explain the whole relationship between the Controller, the Model and the View? I get the basics, but maybe a little more in depth of the correct way to use it. View Models - Say I have a view that displays customer info, and one that edits it, should I have a view model and an edit model, or can the be passed around? 4) Examples?? Thanks for the help up front, $("Sam") ** EDIT ** Am I on the right track here: Public Class HomeController Inherits System.Web.Mvc.Controller Function Index(ByVal id As Integer) As ActionResult Return View(New HomeModel) End Function <HttpPost()> _ Function Index(ByVal Model As HomeModel) As ActionResult Return View(Model) End Function End Class Public Class HomeModel Private _Repository As IRepository(Of Customer) Public Property Customer As Customer Public Sub New() End Sub Public Sub New(ByVal ID As Integer) _Repository = New CustomerRepository Customer = _Repository.GetByID(ID) End Sub End Class Public Interface IRepository(Of T) Function GetByID(ByVal ID As Integer) As T Sub Add(ByVal Entity As T) Sub Delete(ByVal Entity As T) End Interface Public Class CustomerRepository Implements IRepository(Of Customer) Public Sub Add(ByVal Entity As Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Customer).Add End Sub Public Sub Delete(ByVal Entity As Customer) Implements IRepository(Of Customer).Delete End Sub Public Function GetByID(ByVal ID As Integer) As Customer Implements IRepository(Of Customer).GetByID Return New Customer With {.ID = ID, .FirstName = "Sam", .LastName = "Striano"} End Function End Class Public Class Customer Public Property ID As Integer Public Property FirstName As String Public Property LastName As String End Class

  • Fluent NHibernate Repository with subclasses

    - by reallyJim
    Having some difficulty understanding the best way to implement subclasses with a generic repository using Fluent NHibernate. I have a base class and two subclasses, say: public abstract class Person { public virtual int PersonId { get; set; } public virtual string FirstName { get; set; } public virtual string LastName { get; set; } } public class Student : Person { public virtual decimal GPA { get; set; } } public class Teacher : Person { public virtual decimal Salary { get; set; } } My Mappings are as follows: public class PersonMap : ClassMap { public PersonMap() { Table("Persons"); Id(x => x.PersonId).GeneratedBy.Identity(); Map(x => x.FirstName); Map(x => x.LastName); } } public class StudentMap : SubclassMap<Student> { public StudentMap() { Table("Students"); KeyColumn("PersonId"); Map(x => x.GPA); } } public class TeacherMap : SubclassMap<Teacher> { public TeacherMap() { Table("Teachers"); KeyColumn("PersonId"); Map(x => x.Salary); } } I use a generic repository to save/retreive/update the entities, and it works great--provided I'm working with Repository--where I already know that I'm working with students or working with teachers. The problem I run into is this: What happens when I have an ID, and need to determine the TYPE of person? If a user comes to my site as PersonId = 23, how do I go about figuring out which type of person it is?

  • Which is the better C# class design for dealing with read+write versus readonly

    - by DanM
    I'm contemplating two different class designs for handling a situation where some repositories are read-only while others are read-write. (I don't foresee any need to a write-only repository.) Class Design 1 -- provide all functionality in a base class, then expose applicable functionality publicly in sub classes public abstract class RepositoryBase { protected virtual void SelectBase() { // implementation... } protected virtual void InsertBase() { // implementation... } protected virtual void UpdateBase() { // implementation... } protected virtual void DeleteBase() { // implementation... } } public class ReadOnlyRepository : RepositoryBase { public void Select() { SelectBase(); } } public class ReadWriteRepository : RepositoryBase { public void Select() { SelectBase(); } public void Insert() { InsertBase(); } public void Update() { UpdateBase(); } public void Delete() { DeleteBase(); } } Class Design 2 - read-write class inherits from read-only class public class ReadOnlyRepository { public void Select() { // implementation... } } public class ReadWriteRepository : ReadOnlyRepository { public void Insert() { // implementation... } public void Update() { // implementation... } public void Delete() { // implementation... } } Is one of these designs clearly stronger than the other? If so, which one and why? P.S. If this sounds like a homework question, it's not, but feel free to use it as one if you want :)

  • Repaint() not calling paint() in Java

    - by Joshua Auriemma
    Let me start off by saying I know I've violated some basic Java principles in this messy code, but I'm desperately trying to finish a program by Tuesday for a social science experiment, and I don't know Java, so I'm basically just fumbling through it for now. With that disclaimer out of the way, I have a separate program working where a circle is moving around the screen and the user must click on it. It works fine when its in its own separate class file, but when I add the code to my main program, it's no longer working. I don't even really understand why repaint() calls my paint() function — as far as I'm concerned, it's magic, but I've noticed that repaint() calls paint() in my test program, but not in the more complicated actual program, and I assume that's why the circle is no longer painting on my program. Entire code is below: import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.Rectangle; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.awt.geom.Ellipse2D; import java.io.FileReader; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.Calendar; public class Reflexology1 extends JFrame{ private static final long serialVersionUID = -1295261024563143679L; private Ellipse2D ball = new Ellipse2D.Double(0, 0, 25, 25); private Timer moveBallTimer; int _ballXpos, _ballYpos; JButton button1, button2; JButton movingButton; JTextArea textArea1; int buttonAClicked, buttonDClicked; private long _openTime = 0; private long _closeTime = 0; JPanel thePanel = new JPanel(); JPanel thePlacebo = new JPanel(); final JFrame frame = new JFrame("Reflexology"); final JFrame frame2 = new JFrame("The Test"); JLabel label1 = new JLabel("Press X and then click the moving dot as fast as you can."); public static void main(String[] args){ new Reflexology1(); } public Reflexology1(){ frame.setSize(600, 475); frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setTitle("Reflexology 1.0"); frame.setResizable(false); frame2.setSize(600, 475); frame2.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frame2.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame2.setTitle("Reflexology 1.0"); frame2.setResizable(false); button1 = new JButton("Accept"); button2 = new JButton("Decline"); //movingButton = new JButton("Click Me"); ListenForAcceptButton lForAButton = new ListenForAcceptButton(); ListenForDeclineButton lForDButton = new ListenForDeclineButton(); button1.addActionListener(lForAButton); button2.addActionListener(lForDButton); //movingButton.addActionListener(lForMButton); JTextArea textArea1 = new JTextArea(24, 50); textArea1.setText("Tracking Events\n"); textArea1.setLineWrap(true); textArea1.setWrapStyleWord(true); textArea1.setSize(15, 50); textArea1.setEditable(false); FileReader reader = null; try { reader = new FileReader("EULA.txt"); textArea1.read(reader, "EULA.txt"); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("Problem loading file"); exception.printStackTrace(); } finally { if (reader != null) { try { reader.close(); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("Error closing reader"); exception.printStackTrace(); } } } JScrollPane scrollBar1 = new JScrollPane(textArea1, JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED, JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_NEVER); AdjustmentListener listener = new MyAdjustmentListener(); thePanel.add(scrollBar1); thePanel.add(button1); thePanel.add(button2); frame.add(thePanel); ListenForMouse lForMouse = new ListenForMouse(); thePlacebo.addMouseListener(lForMouse); thePlacebo.add(label1); frame2.add(thePlacebo); ListenForWindow lForWindow = new ListenForWindow(); frame.addWindowListener(lForWindow); frame2.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() { public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e){ if(e.getKeyChar() == 'X' || e.getKeyChar() == 'x') {moveBallTimer.start();} } }); frame.setVisible(true); moveBallTimer = new Timer(1000, new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { moveBall(); System.out.println("Timer started!"); repaint(); } }); addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() { public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { if(frame2.isVisible()){ moveBallTimer.start(); } } }); } private class ListenForAcceptButton implements ActionListener{ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){ if (e.getSource() == button1){ Calendar ClCDateTime = Calendar.getInstance(); System.out.println(ClCDateTime.getTimeInMillis() - _openTime); _closeTime = ClCDateTime.getTimeInMillis() - _openTime; //frame.getContentPane().remove(thePanel); //thePlacebo.addKeyListener(lForKeys); //frame.getContentPane().add(thePlacebo); //frame.repaint(); //moveBallTimer.start(); frame.setVisible(false); frame2.setVisible(true); frame2.revalidate(); frame2.repaint(); } } } private class ListenForDeclineButton implements ActionListener{ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){ if (e.getSource() == button2){ JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(Reflexology1.this, "You've declined the license agreement.   • What is the fastest (possibly unsafe) way to read a byte[]?

    - by Aidiakapi
    I'm working on a server project in C#, and after a TCP message is received, it is parsed, and stored in a byte[] of exact size. (Not a buffer of fixed length, but a byte[] of an absolute length in which all data is stored.) Now for reading this byte[] I'll be creating some wrapper functions (also for compatibility), these are the signatures of all functions I need: public byte ReadByte(); public sbyte ReadSByte(); public short ReadShort(); public ushort ReadUShort(); public int ReadInt(); public uint ReadUInt(); public float ReadFloat(); public double ReadDouble(); public string ReadChars(int length); public string ReadString(); The string is a \0 terminated string, and is probably encoded in ASCII or UTF-8, but I cannot tell that for sure, since I'm not writing the client. The data exists of: byte[] _data; int _offset; Now I can write all those functions manually, like this: public byte ReadByte() { return _data[_offset++]; } public sbyte ReadSByte() { byte r = _data[_offset++]; if (r >= 128) return (sbyte)(r - 256); else return (sbyte)r; } public short ReadShort() { byte b1 = _data[_offset++]; byte b2 = _data[_offset++]; if (b1 >= 128) return (short)(b1 * 256 + b2 - 65536); else return (short)(b1 * 256 + b2); } public short ReadUShort() { byte b1 = _data[_offset++]; return (short)(b1 * 256 + _data[_offset++]); } But I wonder if there's a faster way, not excluding the use of unsafe code, since this seems a little bit too much work for simple processing.

I'm trying to create a many-to-many relationship between User and Course. I followed one of the Hibernate tutorials and my implementation is as follows: User class: @Entity @Table(name="USER") public class User { private Long id; private String email; private String password; private Set<Course> courses = new HashSet<Course>(0); @Id @GeneratedValue @Column(name="USER_ID") public Long getId() { return id; } public void setId(Long id) { this.id = id; } @Column(name="USER_EMAIL") public String getEmail() { return email; } public void setEmail(String email) { this.email = email; } @Column(name="USER_PASSWORD") public String getPassword() { return password; } public void setPassword(String password) { this.password = password; } @ManyToMany(cascade = CascadeType.ALL) @JoinTable(name = "USER_COURSE", joinColumns = { @JoinColumn(name = "USER_ID") }, inverseJoinColumns = { @JoinColumn(name = "COURSE_ID") }) public Set<Course> getCourses() { return courses; } public void setCourses(Set<Course> courses) { this.courses = courses; } } Course class: @Entity @Table(name="COURSE") public class Course { private Long id; private String name; @Id @GeneratedValue @Column(name="COURSE_ID") public Long getId() { return id; } public void setId(Long id) { this.id = id; } @Column(name="NAME") public String getName() { return name; } public void setName(String name) { this.name = name; } } The problem is that this implementation only allows me to go one way user.getCourses() What do I need to change, so I can go in both directions? user.getCourses() course.getUsers() Any help would be appreciated.
