  • Can I enable discards on a LUKS-encrypted ssd drive in RHEL6 (and do I need to)?

    I have a RHEL 6.4 workstation, running on a LUKS-encrypted LV residing on a SSD. I found RedHat documentation stating that dm_crypt does not currently support TRIM passthrough, however I also found other sources that state the opposite (albeit for other distributions) and even that discards are not needed for recent SSD drives which use some sort of automatic garbage collection. So: 1) Can I enable TRIM/discards with my setup? 2) Do I need to, for optimal disk performance? Thanks for your thoughts.

    I live in the USA, I am curious about plugging in too many computer items into 1 to 2 power plugin outlets. Most power outlets have 2 plugins, some have 4 and more though. Many people will plug in a power strib/bar into 1 of these outlets so that they can plugin even more items.     I have one disk partitioned into 2 logical drives, C and D. There is no unallocated space. I need to add space to C: so I want to use some space from D (plenty available). How can I do this without losing data on D:? Edit: This is a Windows machine.

  • HP Smart Array p400i with Intel X25-M 160 SSD

    I have a pair of x25-M 160 Intel SSD's in an HP DL360 G5 with a p400i Smart Array running 512 BBWC. The disk performance I am getting on this box and another identical one does not come close to matching the same two drives running through a cheap 3ware RAID card. Any idea? I have played with the cache settings, but nothing allows me to get the same results. It seems like the Smart Array controller is the bottleneck.

  • MegaCli newly created disk doesn't appear under /dev/sdX

    After having successfully added 2 new disks in a new RAID virtual drive (background initialization done), I would have exepected it to appear under /dev/sdh but it's not there (so, unusable). The system is running a CentOS 5.2 64 bits, HAL and udev daemons are running, not records of any sdh apparition under the messsage log file or in dmesg, only MegaCli do see that virtual drive. Any idea ?   • Toolbox for Computer Hardware

    I have a lot of computer hardware (hard drives, cables, etc.) and I need a better way to organize. Could anyone recommend a toolbox intended for this sort of thing, or some other good method for storage? I have a two drawer wide file that I currently use, with large plastic bags. It works okay, but I need a better system. Thanks for any advice.

  • convert full-disk RAID5 array to partition-based array?

    I have a RAID 5 array, md0, with three full-disk (non-partitioned) members, sdb, sdc, and sdd. My computer will hang during the AHCI BIOS if AHCI is enabled instead of IDE, if these drives are plugged in. I believe it may be because I'm using the whole disk, and the AHCI BIOS expects an MBR to be on the drive (I don't know why it would care). Is there a way to convert the array to use members sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1, partitioned MBR with 0xFD RAID partitions?

I know that symbolic links afford functionality not in junction points (e.g., they work on external drives); my question is whether there is functionality specific to junction points that make them more appropriate than symbolic links in some circumstances.

  • Eject a bad disk from optical drive

    I have an Alienware computer with one of the optical DVD drives that does not have a manual tray, just a slot to insert the disk. I recently inserted a disk that was apparently bad. It is unreadable does not show up in Windows Explorer. I tried right clicking on the Drive letter and hitting eject, but get an error message that there is no disk in the drive. How do I get the d--ned disk out so I can use the drive?

  • Change Computer Icon?

    After finding out adding an autorun on a flash drive to change the icon to actually look like your flash drive, then after finding out that it'd work for Hard Drives too, I started to wonder if you could change your whole computer's icon so other computers on your network could actually see your physical computer. I doubt that there's a way to do this, but if there is, it'd be pretty cool. :D

  • Suppress "running out of disk space" Message (per drive) on Windows Server 2003

    We have a database server with separate drives for OS, various data files and the transaction log. Our transaction log spills over onto other volumes as well- this is expected behavior. The problem is that we are constantly getting popups that our transaction log drive is out of space (and that I can free space by deleting old or unnecessary files). Is there some way to prevent this message from popping up for this particular drive?

  • creating iTunes listing INCLUDING "Where" information

    Although iTunes produces a very good comprehensive listing of all music which can be copied and pasted into excel to give a database of music, unfortunately it does not include"where" information as shown on the "Get Info" summary. As, in my own case, music files are in a number of different locations(drives and folders) I would like to be able to identify, quickly and simply,duplicate tracks as the last column in the excel listing. Is there a way to do this?

    Hi All, I have a Exchange 2007 SP1 server running on Windows 2008 6 HD Drives in a RAID-1 OS, DB, Logs on separate RAID-1 Disks Size of the Mailbox Database is 183GB and increasing We only have First Storage Group and Second Storage Group There is no more space on the server to install new Physical Disks and create a Storage Group Q - Can I resize the RAID-1 Partition where the DB is ?
