• Is it true that quickly closing a webpage opened from a search engine result can hurt the site's ranking?

  My web designer recently told me that I need to be careful not to Google for my business' website, click on its search result link, then quickly close the page (or click back) too many times. He says "Google knows" that I didn't stay on the page, and could penalize my site for having a high click-through rate if it happens too much (it was something along those lines- I forget the exact wording). Apparently, it could look like the behavior of a visitor who was not interested in what they found (hence the alleged detrimental effect on the site's search ranking). This sounds hard to believe to me because I would not have thought any information is transmitted which tells Google (or anyone, for that matter) whether or not a website is still open in a browser (in my case Firefox v25.0). Could there possibly be any truth to this? If not, why might he have come to this conclusion? Is there some click-tracking or similar technology employed by search engines which does something similar? Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

• Removing a File Association

  I found a rather simple way to remove a file association (default program) tonight that I thought others might find useful.  I found it after discovering that Windows 7 doesn't provide a straight-forward way of removing an association.Windows 7 provides a nice interface in the Control Panel for changing associations (Programs > Default Programs > Set Associations), but once you have one you cannot get rid of it.  The Registry is an obvious choice, because that's where the associations are stored.  In fact, the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive has the association, but there is also a key you need to delete somewhere in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.Doing a little poking around, I discovered a command line program called ASSOC that'll do it.  And typing HELP ASSOC confirms that it was what I was looking for.  The solution to my problem turned out to be as simple as typing ASSOC .BIN="" on the command line.

• New JDeveloper/ADF book hits the bookshelves

  I've just received a nice new copy of Sten Vesterli's book Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development - Made Simple.  I was one of the technical reviewers of the book but I'm looking forward to be able to read it end-to-end in good old fashioned book format this coming week. The book bridges the gap between those existing books that describe Oracle ADF features, and real world ADF development.  So, source control, bug tracking, estimating, testing, security, packaging etc are all covered.  Of course, every project and situation is different so the book could never supply a one-size-fits-all guide, but I think its a good addition to your ADF bookshelf.  I'll hopefully post a full review in the coming weeks. Oh, and congratulations Sten,  having gone through the pain of writing my own ADF book, I take my hat off to anyone who goes through the same journey!

• FIX adapter for StreamInsight

  Over the last couple of month, Rapid Addition, a leading FIX and FAST solutions provider for the financial services industry, has been working closely with the StreamInsight team to enable StreamInsight Complex Event Processing queries to receive input feeds from Rapid Addition’s FIX engine and to send result events back into FIX. Earlier today, Toby Corballis from Rapid Addition blogged about these capabilities here on HedgeHogs. We are very excited to demonstrate these capabilities at the SIFMA conference in New York. • Need assistance for domain forwarding

  Briefly my question is about combining my registered domain with the websites listening on port 80/8080 on my server. I have a web server IIS on windows 7 and two web sites listening on port 80 and 8080. I have successfully forwarded any incoming request to port 80 and 8080 to my web server. So everything works like a charm when I try to access these websites entering http://myglobalip:80/Index.aspx or http://myglobalip:8080/Index.aspx from a computer outside of the local network. So I have a domain registered, lets say www.mydomain.com. What steps should I follow in which sequence? What should I consider to do? I need a step by step guide to follow. I have registered my domain on godaddy's website and only configured forwarding so the domain forward to my webserver but when I attempt to access the web page, It always try and try until It times out.

• Back from Istanbul - Presentations available for download

It has been an intense two days, packed with great content and a lot of networking. Organizing it jointly with the Manageability Partner Forum has allowed participants to benefit from the content of the Manageability sessions, which is a topic that is becoming key as we move to cloud architectures. During the sessions we have listened to two thought-leaders in our industry, Ron Tolido, from Capgemni, and Julian Dontcheff, from Accenture. We thank our Exadata partners -ISE (Germany), Inserve (Sweden), Fors (Russia), Linkplus (Turkey) and Sogeti,  for sharing with the community their experiences in selling and implementing Exadata and Manageability projects. • Separate shaders from HTML file in WebGL

  I'm ramping up on WebGL and was wondering what is the best way to specify my vertex and fragment shaders. Looking at some tutorials, the shaders are embedded directly in the HTML. (And referenced via an ID.) For example: <script id="shader_1-fs" type="x-shader/x-fragment"> precision highp float; void main(void) { // ... } </script> <script id="shader_1-vs" type="x-shader/x-vertex"> attribute vec3 aVertexPosition; uniform mat4 uMVMatrix; // ... My question is, is it possible to have my shaders referenced in a separate file? (Ideally as plain text.) I presume this is straight forward in JavaScript. Is there essentially a way to do this: var shaderText = LoadRemoteFileOnSever('/shaders/shader_1.txt');

• 2D XNA Tile Based Lighting. Ideas and Methods

  I am currently working on developing a 2D tile based game, similar to the game 'Terraria'. We have the base tile and chunk engine working and are now looking to implement lighting. Instead of the tile based lighting that terraria uses, I want to implement point lights for torches, etc. I have seen Catalin Zima’s shader based shadows, and this would be perfect for the torches (point lights). My problem here is that the tiles on the surface of the world need to be illuminated, doing this by a big point light is firstly extremely expensive, but also doesn't look right. What I need help with (overall) is... To have a surface that is illuminated regardless of torches, etc. To also have point lights, or smooth tile lighting similar to Catalin Zima’s shader based shadows. Looking forward to your replies. Any ideas are appreciated.

• D, Vala or Go for game development [on hold]

  I'm looking forward to choose some compiled language for my 3D engine. The engine it's written in C++, however I would like to help coders by using a language which is good for games. I came with these three: Vala, D and Go. The engine is being made to write as less code as posible, also the "main" language it's going to be Lua so any of these will be the "advanced" one (mainly things which could affect performance or . Because of all this and the fact that I heard that Go is good for small projects I thought it would be a pretty good option, however it does not seems to be made (at least originally) for games and also some say I can have trouble with garbage collection in games. So what do you think? Do you have any experience with any of these three in games? How was it?

• I feel stuck in the center of Python, How to get past beginner

  I really apologize if this doesn't follow the S.O rules but I need a little help, I personally still classify myself as a beginner in python, Yet I've wrote a very small and VERY SURE impractical program for my boss to use. I know I'm still a beginner because simple things still perplex me but every book I read for beginners honestly just rehashes what I do already know but every 'more advanced' book doesn't really allow me to learn, they depend on example files and I never really understand why they built 'said' function or 'said' class. So onto my question... Is there any recommendations on a book or ANYTHING that pushes me out of this stage, I've used head first and normally they are really good but my issue there is they have me back tracking just to move forward again, It worked in HTML but its confusing in Python, basically I think I need to build a program while following along, Again I like HeadFirst's style but I need something that isn't going to make me have to remember one thing just to forget it... for record, I've checked into some O'Reilly books

• How does bing-bot( is that the right spider-name? ) and googlebot interpret 301 redirect?

  I've been looking for documentation on how the Microsoft and Google bots interpret 301 redirects. It seems that google-bot stores documents on a url based index system. But I haven't been able to figure out how bing works. Should I assume that they are still working towards coping everyone else and assume they use an algorithm close to google? Is it best to just forward a page to a new location via Javascript? I think this might be a blackhat trick, but how would I tell the bots that it's not? Is 301 redirect my best option and I just have to bit the bullet because said pages are no longer in existence? What other options do I have that I might not be aware of?

• DNS and Wildcard CNAME

  Whenever I attempt to make a record for *.schneiderdonnelly.com.au and CNAME it, I get two errors: You can't mix CNAME/MX records together using the same hostname. Domain root's cannot be CNAME's, however you can web-forward this record to www.schneiderdonnelly.com.au instead for the same effect. I've read it's possible so why can't I make it work? I am prepared to swap DNS providers as long as they're free.

• Colleague unwilling to use unit tests "as it's more to code"

  A colleague is unwilling to use unit tests and instead opting for a quick test, pass it to the users, and if all is well it is published live. Needless to say some bugs do get through. I mentioned we should think about using unit tests - but she was all against it once it was realised more code would have to be written. This leaves me in the position of modifying something and not being sure the output is the same, especially as her code is spaghetti and I try to refactor it when I get a chance. So whats the best way forward for me?

• How to design a replay system

  So how would I design a replay system? You may know it from certain games like Warcraft 3 or Starcraft where you can watch the game again after it has been played already. You end up with a relatively small replay file. So my questions are: How to save the data? (custom format?) (small filesize) What shall be saved? How to make it generic so it can be used in other games to record a time period (and not a complete match for example)? Make it possible to forward and rewind (WC3 couldn't rewind as far as I remember)
