  • Ubuntu freezes when gdm starts showing userlist

    I have Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) I was browsing in Firefox yesterday, then the PC did a suddenly reset Once I restarted, everything went normal until gdm begun showing. Then everything froze and locked when userlist showed. I could not move mouse pointer nor do anything with keyboard. Both, mouse and keyboard work fine, because this Ubuntu is dual-booting with a Windows XP install which loads/works fine. Here is my .xsession-errors file, but I don't have a clue what may be wrong.   • There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

    Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint?   • Is Zabbix the right tool for me?

    I just want to monitor a small handful of servers (less than 10). From reading various places it sounds like the top leading contenders (for open source at least) are: nagios munin zabbix From what I have read a lot of people tend to use munin and nagios together -- munin for history and graphs, and nagios for alerting. On the other hand it sounds like Zabbix is a more complete solution and easier to configure than either of the other two. So I was thinking of going that route. My thoughts right now are: What are the general disadvantages of Zabbix? Does Zabbix have a small footprint on boxes it is monitoring? Do I really need to setup an entire other server for it? I currently have a server that is under very light load -- can I dual purpose it?

  • Tool to test USB sticks?

    Some of the files I copy to a USB stick seems to be corrupted? Maybe the stick is bad but I haven't used it much and want to know for sure. Is there a Windows utility to test the stick? Mark bad areas as bad so the file system doesn't save to them? I format before I copy but I still get corrupted files? Does chkdsk work on USB sticks reliably?

    I was wondering is there any way to add additional, alternative key binding to a particular feature in compiz? I am using Wall plugin and on my ThinkPad it is convenient to switch between horizontal workspaces with media buttons for browser navigation. But there just two of them, so I have to use completely different combinations to switch between workspaces vertically and that would very helpful if I can also use similar kind of combination to switch horizontally as well in addition to those media buttons. Is there a way maybe to send a message to the compiz to execute particular command? That would solve the issue.

  • Decent bookmark manager/tool for Firefox.

    The built in bookmarks UX for Firefox is dismall. How do I bookmark a page without opening the whole shebang and shoosing a bookmark folder? I can simply 'star' the page, but then it ends up in Unsorted Bookmarks. I can move a bookmark folder to the bookmark toolbar, where I have instant access to all bookmarks in that folder, but I can no longer bookmark a page in that folder in the normal way, because when I have to click the damned bookmark folder icon and manually type in the URL and title. What add-ins are there that can make bookmarking in Firefox humanly sane?

  • 3 Headed Display Ubuntu Wallpaper

    I got 3 display working in Linux. I have set it up so I have Xinerama and 3 different X sessions. So my 3 displays are not all the same size, two are 1680x1050 and then the other which is between the two is 2560x1600. So my issue is when I chose span, even if the image is larger than all 3 resolutions combined, the center monitor has bars at the top and the bottom because span scales the image it seems. Is there a way if I bypass the gui to have an image span all three monitors but with no scaling? Urgent! Please help! ;-)

  • Mint 13 does nothing when laptop lid is closed

    I have a laptop running Mint 13. I have it hooked up to a 30" monitor and have no use for the laptop being open, so I put it on a shelf and close it. When I do that, the monitor goes blank. The power manager does not have an option for doing nothing when the lid is closed. The options are "Blank Screen", "Suspend", and "Shutdown". Is there a way to make the laptop not go to a blank screen when the lid is closed?

I'll often care that the files are functionally the same, but diff by itself, would be annoying to use, especially if the XML file doesn't have a lot of linebreaks.     I am looking for a (Windows XP) utility (preferably a standalone app) that can let me set a hotkey to adjust the gamma (and hopefully other color settings) of the overlay surface. ATI Tray Tools does not have the ability to bind the overlay color adjustments to the overlay. I’ve asked him about it and he said it was difficult to implement or something (he was kind of vague). The ATI Catalyst drivers do not have a hotkey function for the overlay tab either. Can anyone help?

  • monitor power and lock screen (Ubuntu Lucid)

    Hi, I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself). Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)? Thanks.

    hi. im looking for a small utility that can copy files over to/from remote windows hosts, and which can take the credentials (domain user and password) as part of its command line, similar to psexec. i know i can use net use to map the target directory to a drive letter and use xcopy, and i know psexec can upload files to be executed on the remote machine and then delete them, but im looking for a small utility to distribute files to remote hosts that will not be as awkward to use as net use + xcopy

    I'm in the process of deploying a bunch of Win2K8R2 VMs via vSphere's deployment template stuff, and in the deploy specification it allows you to punch a list of commands to run. Aside from activating Windows (which it doesn't do), it works pretty well. Does anyone know the command-line equivalent of going into a network adapter's properties and unchecking the IPv6 box? If I had that I could put that in the spec and not have to manually uncheck the IPv6 box.

    Hi All, I just bought a new core i5 system (assembled) and started installing Windows 7. It was failing for many times and at some point got installed. After that, frequent crashes related to MEMORY. So checked the RAM using memtest86+ and found many errors.I got it replaced with the vendor and now if i install ANY OS, at some point in installation it either freezes completely with no response for hours, or restarts automatically. I tried installing Windows 7, Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I tested the new RAM again and found no problems in about 2 passes using memtest86+. I even updated the BIOS using bootable USB and even the problem persists. I am really not sure which hardware is causing trouble. I dont have any OS inside it, so i have to check using bootable CDs DVDs and USB only. Please advice on how to proceed. Are there any suites/ separate tools for checking integrity of each hardware parts and troubleshoot it? I wanted to confirm which part is problematic before going for replacement. Thanks a lot!   • Execute script before shutting down in Ubuntu

    When I shut down my computer I want to show some pending tasks that I have to do before leaving the office... I did a local application to manage those tasks, so basically I just want to run a command, and shut down after I kill the app executed. I have already tried with these options: * /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default -- this works only when I select LogOut option instead Shutdown. * /etc/rc0.d/K01mycustomscript -- execute script after X is killed * $HOME/.bash_logout -- This looks like does nothing. * ./app-to-run && sudo shutdown -h now -- Don't like it for 2 reasons, prompts for sudo password, and can't use my laptop shutdown button. I am using Ubuntu 10.04

  • Synchronizing the SamAccountName Property using Windows Azure Active Directory Sync Tool

    Using this official documentation as a guide, I would expect the SamAccountName property to sync from my on-premise AD to Office 365. I think that it used to do exactly that, but now it seems that it doesn't so much sync the attribute as it does create an entirely new, unlinked value and store it in Office 365. This has caused some minor issues for me (broken scripts, annoying permissions management, etc.) and may be part of a more major issue regarding ADFS authentication. On-Premise PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ADUser jdoe -Properties SamAccountName | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : jdoe Office 365 Sync'ed Objects PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Mailbox jdoe | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : $1A7H20-K1LCOJFFBHGS I understand how to work around this issue in my scripts -- there exists the ImmutableId property which can be mapped back to the on-premise GUID. As far as the issue I'm having with ADFS, I'm less certain how to proceed and if this is causing my issues. At this point I really would just like some verification that I'm not crazy and that this used to be sync'ed at some point in the past and that Office 365 broke it relatively recently. I also think that MS documentation should perhaps be updated to exclude SamAccountName from the list of synchronized properties on the page I linked.

  • How can I launch a GUI session on a remote Ubuntu Desktop via SSH from a non-GUI Linux shell?

    I am setting up a test environment, made up of various Linux boxes, and I have the need to launch an instance of Firefox on a remote machine via ssh. The remote machine has Ubuntu Desktop (11) and Firefox installed. The source machine is a Continuous Integration server and it creates an ssh session to the remote machine from a non-GUI environment. It then runs a script, which tries to launch Firefox on the remote machine. However, since the ssh session is a from a non-GUI environment, there is no display. Is it possible to have a headless X-windows display? i.e. a virtual display in the remote environment for Firefox to run in? What options do I have?
