• Can I use Ubuntu One Icons for 3rd party thingy?

  So I am wondering what the guide lines are for using Ubuntu One icons as I have heard from a number of people that Ubuntu One has some propitiatory things to it. • Which folders need to be backed up for migration in Joomla?

  I'm helping someone update & migrate their old website, built on the Joomla framework. Currently it is running on Joomla 1.5.8 which is an ancient version. I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to at least 2.5 I have already made a backup of the database. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• Ubuntu Wubi Booting Problem

  i have a problem with my Ubuntu 12.04 Wubi installation, sometimes when booting, the computer will get to the purple screen without the Ubuntu logo, then will go to a black screen and then lots of white saccaged colors will appear and i will be taken to the login page. But sometimes, it just get stuck on the black screen and does nothing and i have to hard shutdown and retry it until it works. What may cause this problem and why? I can shutdown correctly. Thanks for helping. Edit: RADEON HD 7650M Graphic card with latest available Drivers on amd's driver download site (fglrx drivers caused shutdown problems so i removed them). Screen resolution is 1600x900.

• How to install again Update Manager after uninstalling it

  Ok, the thing is this I tried asking many times on few ubuntu forums how to deal with my non-responsive Update Manager, but all I was getting was the same stuff (run it from the terminal, run some lines, apt-get update blah blah). Nothing was helping. Eventually I went mad Windows style and tried to simply uninstall it and install it again. The problem is - how to install it again? Can't do it through Software Center, can't really build a package (because I'm too stupid to do that). And I seriously want to avoid reinstalling the whole system. I am running a 12.04 verison (Update Manager was unable to update to a newer one) Please help. I am furious with this thing.

  Following a recent discussion with female associates in hiring positions for software development/engineering positions, I found out that this kind of information would be incredibly useful to helping make sure that the workforce shows a gender balance. So I went looking. I've found various literature speaking about risk-taking behaviour and patterns, and other statistical differences between men and women when it comes to work performance. See for example this article related to hedge fund management. I have yet to see any such comparison in the computing field. To restate the question: Which specific programming activities do women, on average, perform better than men? Please back up your answers with specific details, preferably by linking to relevant research or, failing that, explaining what you're basing the information on.

• What to choose for beginner: PHP/Python/Ruby

  I'm a beginner teaching myself to code but I would like he insight of the PSE community and helping choose where to start. My main objective is to be able to create a basic website to first test my business idea and from there iterate on it quickly to minimise my learning time. The most important criteria for me is speed. An example of speed would be pre-built components available open source and not having to write one from scratch. From my research, this seems to be a death match between the following languages and frameworks: PHP and CakePHP Python and Django Ruby and Rails Assumptions: I am going to be equally good (or bad) in all 3. It is going to be equally easy to find competent developers in either language. I know this to be false already by lets assume that it is. This question is not meant to karma whore as I've seen how passionate some of these standoff questions have been and I'll be happy to turn it into a community wiki.

• Would it be possible to build a client portal on Squarespace6?

  I'm helping a family member set up a site which will need to include a secure client portal, providing access to documents and a simple database. I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace. Does any one know if it would be possible to accomplish this with the new developer platform for squarespace 6? I've spent well over an hour searching google, the squarespace site and stackexchange, but can't seem to find any clear answer to this question. I'm grateful for any insight you all can provide.

I was wondering, is it possible to block a referrer by domain extension, instead of just by full site, etc.? • System bar not showing when using the macbuntu theme

  i think i really need your assistance in this.I've installed ubuntu 10.10 and this mac theme and so far it works fine. This morning i upgraded to 11.04 and it also went well. i just realise some of the effects were gone. so i open compizconfig settings manager, i've tried to enable the destop cube and the expo and it prompted me of desabling somethings here and there. honestly i went fast couldn't undo what i've done and i realize the new application launcher and the system bar weren't showing properly, so i decided to restart my machine.After that 'bummer', nothing were like before.no system bar, no application launcher, not menu bar for any of my applications not even for the console. How i'm going to solve this one this time. thanks for reading this and specially for helping out.

• Can't access my partitions after installing Ubuntu

  Programming has always interested me, but after learning some of the basics of Java(I'm talking high school level), I don't really know what to do from there. I want to be able to apply what I learned in some way, whether it be a volunteer project or something, but I probably don't know enough programming. Is it possible for a novice Java programmer to be useful in some way whatsoever. • Client-Side V.S. Server-Side Searching?

  I am currently helping to design a web site and application in HTML. We would like the user to be able to search the site/app for desired content via a search bar. We would also like to include an advanced search ability to allow for different search options and more concentrated searches. We are having trouble deciding whether to program the search function on the Client-Side (with JavaScript) or on the Server-Side (with PHP). • Organisation GitHub account. Secure to use for personal projects?

  So a large client of mine gave me access to their Organisation GitHub account. With it came a login for myself (on github.companyname.com) and of course access to certain repos on their company account (by switching the user to the company via the button in the top left). Now I was wondering, since I can create private repos for myself, is it safe for me to use these for non-related projects or can the company administrators access my user's repos despite being private? My understanding of Github is limited as it is, so this extra layer of complexity from the organisation account isn't helping too much. Thanks,Mike

• Calculate initial velocity of a 3d vector-based projectile

  Okay, so I got a Projectile with 2 Vectors, position and velocity. I now want to calculate the initial velocity for it in order to reach a specific point on the map. Or actually, how high has the start z-velocity to be (because x and y are probably defined by a speed variable) in order for the projectile to hit the marked position. The projectile is influenced by a constant gravity vector. All calculations are done 32 times per second. I want this, because I don't want to use a parabola function, so the projectile can still be influenced by other sources, simply adding some velocity. I didn't really find anything referring to that topic and would be glad for every helping answer, Thanks.

• installed 12.04 fine. updated graphics driver. now solid puprle screen.

  Purchased a new msi ge 70 series labtop. nvidia card gtx 765m. updated driver after install, and ran update manager. All seems well. restarted as required. Now i have a solid purple screen, even if i use boot menu to recovery mode. all i can do is access grub menu 3.10. live cd will run but i get purple screen and cant see choices. please help and im still learning ubuntu. noob talk prefered. i hate making more mistakes. Thanks also tryed changing lines of kernal code using "e" on boot menu, nomodeset and the like. not helping. any way to fix problem through grub?

• How to select which account is logged in at system startup, or none?

  I'm helping out some friends with a tiny hospitality business where one desktop computer has some files used by the business in one account "hotel" but it's mostly used by guests for browsing the web in another account "guest". It's low security, we're not worried about hacking or anything. But we don't want people accidentally moving our files or anything either. But the system always boots into the "hotel" account without asking for a password, even though the account has a password. We want it to boot into the "guest" account. I know a bit about computers generally and Linux but not much about Ubuntu and the ever-changing graphical environment the Linuxes are going through these days. We've looked through the obvious settings/preferences/options and I've done some Googling. I know this should be obvious easy stuff but I can't find it. (We're running 10.04 LTS on a generic aging Intel box.)

• Benefits of TOGAF or similar?

  I can read the website blurb and be impressed by the alleged benefits, but I haven't worked anywhere or with anyone who followed the TOGAF (or any alternative) architecture framework. Our organisation has declared itself dedicated to moving from what is currently a fairly shambolic design & development model towards something approaching a modern structured process. Things like TOGAF have been mentioned as helping achieve a world-class enterprise development environment (!) but I'm convinced that no-one here really understands the real-world benefits that wholesale adoption might bring and, perhaps more importantly, the effort/pain required to achieve the same. Do you have experience in using TOGAF or similar to wrestle control in an organisation? Do you think that use of the framework brought any benefit?   I have used the web and Stack Overflow extensively during the past month or so in creating my final project for my C# class. I have used so much code that I didn't write myself that I feel I am being unethical by not giving proper credit to the people who helped me; or the websites that have provided excellent examples. Is it unethical to publish work which was created by me, even though its hardest problems were solved by other people? Should I credit these people for helping me with my assignment? Or the web sites which provided examples?
