• VB.NET: How to know time for which system is idle?

  I'm making an application in which I'm implementing auto-monitor turn off when system is idle, i.e. when user is not interacting with the system. • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

  We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

• In the java DBCP connection pool - what is an idle connection?

  A colleague at work insists that a DBCP idle connection is a connection that has lain unused for 30 minutes. I believe a dbcp idle connection is a connection that is in the pool available to be borrowed, and an active connection is one that is borrowed. Looking through the code I found no reference to 30 minutes or other magic values and a cursory glance through the code for assuring minidle does not show any such logic. If he is correct can you please back that up with a code or documentation reference. For the complete answer I would like it answered for both DBCP 1.1 and 1.6.

• What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

  On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. • Win7 Prof. Computer won't wake on lan via Magic Packet from outside network

  Hi all. I just purchased a new computer running Windows 7 Professional x64. I'd like to save power by having it sleep after an hour, but I would also like to be able to Remote Desktop into it at my leisure. I set up a static IP and have port forwarding set up on the router. If the computer is awake, the RDP connection works just fine. I downloaded and installed Wake-On-Lan thanks to this article If I put my new computer to sleep and send the magic packet from my old computer inside of my home network it wakes up. If I do the same thing, however, from my work computer outside the network it does not. I figured the Firewall was blocking the incoming traffic, but nothing in the Windows Firewall logs points to this happening. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or any tests I can run through in order to narrow down what the problem might be. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

• CentOS 5.5 x86_64 VPS - A lot of inbound traffic when idle?

  I have a CentOS VPS from UKWSD and I'm getting inbound traffic that I cannot understand. The VPS was setup yesterday and I installed vnstat this morning around 10am, since then the server was basically idle and doing nothing from 12pm but it's showing activity inbound which is way over what it should be and i'd say the outbound is pretty much over to top too. • VMWare workstation: guest OS becomes sluggish after being idle for 12+ hours?

  Hi, My VM becomes sluggish after a few hours(~12 hours or so) of being idle, there is no impact on the host, just the gueste. The guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM, runs on Raid 0, quad core i5 750, everything is defragged, but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. Coming from Hyper-V I had to learn VMWare and after a few months of fine tunning it I'm quite impressed with how configurable VMWare is. This is the only small issue I haven't been able to fix, has anyone encountered this?

• Transfer hard-drive with windows XP to another computer. On booting, asks to activate xp

  I had an old computer sitting around that I have not been able to boot successfully. I moved the hard drive and placed it in my newer computer. If I boot linux, I can mount the XP hard-drive and access the files. If I try to boot from the XP hard-drive, it will boot, but it asks me to activate windows before proceeding. If I continue, I get the "activation window" with two images/icons(?) which are failing to load. Nothing else happens. The version of windows came with the original computer the hard-drive came from, so I'm not sure if I'm married to the broken computer (I hope not!). Is there anything I can do in order to boot into XP from the new computer?

• Why am I unable to access the network shares on my own computer?

  I am having some problems with media center computer, with Windows 7 on it. The computers IP address is 192.168.1.13, and another computer can without any problem navigate to \\192.168.1.13, but the computer itself can not. Neither \\servername nor \\localhost. If I reboot the computer a couple of times, it will work again, but this is a big problem as my computer cleans my media center library on boot and there, if it can not access \\192.168.1.13, it will think that all the files have been removed and therefore delete them from the database. I really have no idea on where to start with this problem, but if anyone has tried this before and fixed it, I would be very happy, as it would save me from having to reinstall the whole system.

• Automatically make user local administrator on their computer through GPO?

  In our AD 2003 domain each user gets local admin permissions on their computer. Everyone else can login with their domain account as normal user. Right now this means going to the desktop and manually adding the user as a local administrator. Is there any way to automate this process through logon scripts or GPOs? I have found ways to use a gpo to make everyone who logs in to a computer a local admin, but really only want to give it to the primary user (or in some cases users) of the computer. I've also seen methods that required adding a group for each computer...but really dont want to clutter AD like that. I do have a list mapping each user to each computer name. If it matters the desktops are a mix of xp and win7.

• Why is RAM usage so high on an idle server? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Why is Linux reporting “free” memory strangely? 2 answers I'm investigating a server used for scientific data analysis. It's running RHEL 6.4 It has almost 200GB of RAM. It's been running very slowly for users via SSH, and after some poking around I quickly noticed that the RAM usage was sky-high. What's odd is that even in an idle state it's still using a ton of RAM: I also looked via htop and I can't see that any running process is using more than 0.1% of the RAM. So I wonder what's going on? Right now the only user-initiated process running is an rsync between two NFS-mounted shares. I tried rebooting the server and it was much more responsive for a few minutes, but then memory usage shot up again. Is there any way I can pinpoint why memory usage is so high?

Specifically, I've forgotten how to convert an EBNF into BNF. From what little I remember, I know that one of the main points is to convert { term } into <term> | <many-terms>. But I don't remember the other rules. I've tried to look this up online but I can only find links to either homework questions, or a small comment about converting terms with curly braces. I can't find an exhaustive list of rules that define the translation.

  Hi, let's say that I am a physicist and that I am the master of the universe when it comes to port salready existing oftware to GPU's with 100x or more speedups. Let's say that I find that some other scientist, which does not know how to program GPU, publishes the Open Source code in his/her website of a physical simulation program, in the field I am expert on. Let's say that I realize "I can port that code to GPU", and I suggest him, but he shows no interest. My interest here is, 1) to port it to GPU, 2) to publish this result in a scientific journal related with physics and/or computer science My question for you is 1- would you proceed here to port the code to GPU (or other new arch) and publish it? 2- how would you do it and which journal do you suggest? Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. However, I can see this DLL. It exists. I have added the following to the input dependencies for my linker C:\OpenCV2.0\lib\libcv200.dll.a C:\OpenCV2.0\lib\libcvaux200.dll.a C:\OpenCV2.0\lib\libcxcore200.dll.a C:\OpenCV2.0\lib\libhighgui200.dll.a What gives?   Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

  Hi all! I'm trying to write an evaluation function for a game of checkers that I'm developing but I can't find the right documentation. I've read several documents on the web witch describe different techniques for either writing one or letting the computer find it(using genetic algorithms or Bayesian learning) but they're too complicated for a novice like me. All documents pointed a reference to "Some studies in machine learning using the game of checkers" by A.L.Samuel but I couldn't get my hands on it yet :(. I've only read the follow up "Some studies in machine learning using the game of checkers -II" and found some good info there, but it doesn't explain what the eval parameters mean (I think I don't have the whole article).   Hello Group, Recently I was asked this question in a technical discussion. What is the longest possible loop that can be written in a programming language? This loop has to be as long as possible and yet not an infinite loop and should not end-up crashing the program (Recursion etc...) I honestly did not know how to attack this problem, so I asked him if is it practically possible. He said using some computer science concepts, you can arrive at a hypothetical number which may not be practical but nevertheless it will still not be infinite. • Framework/tool for processing C++ unit tests with numerical output

  Hi, I am working on a C++ application that uses computer vision techniques to identify various types of objects in a sequence of images. The (1000+) images have been hand-classified, so we have an XML file for each image containing a description of where the objects are actually located in the images. I would like to know if there is a testing framework that can understand/graph results from tests that are numeric, in this case some measure of the error in the program's classification of the images, rather than just pass/fail style unit tests. We would like to use something like CDash/CTest for running these automated tests, and viewing over time how improvements to the vision algorithms are causing the images to be more correctly classified. Does anyone know of a tool/framework that can do this?

  I would like to draw a rectangle around a video playing on my screen. For example, I am watching a YouTube video in my browser. I would like to be able to take a screenshot, analyze that screenshot, and then draw a rectangle around where the YouTube video is playing. I have just started looking into how I might be able to to this. I came across OpenCV. I understand that OpenCV covers many computer vision techniques. Isn't the projection coordinates already independent of output device?We only need to first scale and then translate the projection coordinate then we will get device coordinate. So why do we need first convert the projection coordinate to normalized coordinate first? "Clipping is usually performed in normlized coordinates.This allows us to reduce computations by first concatenating the various transformation matrices" Why clipping is usually performed in normlized coordinates?
