  • WinInet Apps failing when Internet Explorer is set to Offline Mode

    Ran into a nasty issue last week when all of a sudden many of my old applications that are using WinInet for HTTP access started failing. Specifically, the WinInet HttpSendRequest() call started failing with an error of 2, which when retrieving the error boils down to: WinInet Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Now this error can pop up in many legitimate scenarios with WinInet such as when no Internet connection is available or the HTTP configuration (usually configured in Internet Explorer’s options) is misconfigured. The error typically means that the server in question cannot be found or more specifically an Internet connection can’t be established. In this case the problem started suddenly and was causing some of my own applications (old Visual FoxPro apps using my own wwHttp library) and all Adobe Air applications (which apparently uses WinInet for its basic HTTP stack) along with a few more oddball applications to fail instantly when trying to connect via HTTP. Most other applications – all of my installed browsers, email clients, various social network updaters all worked just fine. It seems it was only WinInet apps that were failing. Yet oddly Internet Explorer appeared to be working. So the problem seemed to be isolated to those ‘classic’ applications using WinInet. WinInet’s base configuration uses the Internet Explorer options dialog. To check this out I typically go to the Internet Explorer options and find the Connection tab, and check out the LAN Setup. Make sure there are no rogue proxy settings or configuration scripts that are invalid. Trying with Auto-configuration on and off also can often fix ‘real’ configuration errors. This time however this wasn’t a problem – nothing in the LAN configuration was set (all default). I also played with the Automatic detection of settings which also had no effect. I also tried to use Fiddler to see if that would tell me something. Fiddler has a few additional WinInet configuration options in its configuration. Running Fiddler and hitting an HTTP request using WinInet would never actually hit Fiddler – the failure would occur before WinInet ever fired up the HTTP connection to go through the Fiddler HTTP proxy. And the Culprit is: Internet Explorer’s Work Offline Option The culprit in this situation was Internet Explorer which at some point, unknown to me switched into Offline Mode and was then shut down: When this Offline mode is checked when IE is running *or* if IE gets shut down with this flag set, all applications using WinInet by default assume that it’s running in offline mode. Depending on your caching HTTP headers and whether the page was cached previously you may or may not get a response or an error. For an independent non-browser application this will be highly unpredictable and likely result in failures getting online – especially if the application forces requests to always reload by disabling HTTP caching (as I do on most of my dynamic HTTP clients). What makes this especially tricky is that even when IE is in offline mode in the browser, you can still browse around the Web *if* you have a connection. IE will try to load anything it has cached from the local cache, but as soon as you hit a URL that isn’t cached it will automatically try to access that URL and uncheck the Work Offline option. Conversely if you get knocked off the Internet and browse in IE 9, IE will automatically go into offline mode. I never explicitly set offline mode – it just automatically sets itself on and off depending on the connection. Problem is if you’re not using IE all the time (as I do – rarely and just for testing so usually a few commonly used URLs) and you left it in offline mode when you exit, offline mode stays set which results in the above head scratcher. Ack. This isn’t new behavior in IE 9 BTW – this behavior has always been there, but I think what’s different is that IE now automatically switches between online and offline modes without notifying you at all, so it’s hard to tell when you are offline. Fixing the Issue in your Code If you have an application that is using WinInet, there’s a WinInet option called INTERNET_OPTION_IGNORE_OFFLINE. I just checked this out in my own applications and Internet Explorer 9 and it works, but apparently it’s been broken for some older releases (I can’t confirm how far back though) – lots of posts seem to suggest the flag doesn’t work. However, in IE 9 at least it does seem to work if you call InternetSetOption before you call HttpOpenRequest with the Http Session handle. I never want to see offline operation in an HTTP client API – it’s just too unpredictable in handling errors and the last thing you want is getting unpredictably stale data. Problem solved but this behavior is – well ugly.   • Embedding a File Explorer instance in a WinForms app form

    My (C#, .NET 3.5) app generates files and, in addition to raising events that can be caught and reacted to, I want to display the target folder to the user in a form. The file-list is being shown within the same form as other information. I'm using an instance of the WebBrowser control (System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser), then navigating to the folder. This shows some default view of the explorer window, with the file summary panel on the left and the files in the 'Tiles' (large icon and text) view. e.g. wb.Navigate(@"c:\path\to\folder\"); I'd like to suppress the panel and to view the file list in the Details view. The user can get to this via a right-click, context menu, but I'd like it to come up automatically. I'd rather not have to build my own TreeView, DataGridView or whatever; the WebBrowser control does all the updating and re-sorting and whatnot 'for free'. Does anybody have a better suggestion? A different control to use or some additional arguments to pass to the control? And if I could trap events (e.g. files being selected/renamed/double-clicked, etc.) then all the better!

  • jQuery .attr() crashing Internet Explorer

    Hello everyone, This is my first time posting a question here, as I usually try to find solutions myself. This one, though, being an IE issue, just drives me crazy. I use jQuery cycle plug-in on a website I made and, to populate a caption div, I use a little function that is called after the image is loaded, which uses the "alt" attribute of the image. This seems to exasperate Internet Explorer, which, doesn't have the time to fulfill this apparently so-complicated task, and, as the slideshow cycles, it enters in an infinite loop and eventually crashes – the newer the version, the worse the crash: the older IEs just display an error message saying “The webpage cannot be displayed”, while the newer (7 and 8) completely crash the system. I have no idea on how to solve or work around this.   • Key strokes in wpf window hosted in MFC ActiveX running in Internet Explorer

    We have an MFC ActiveX control created in Visual Studio 2008 with CLR support which creates a WPF grid and shows a WPF window within that grid. This ActiveX is hosted within Internet Explorer and it shows up and works nicely except that the tab key, backspace, function keys etc. does not work since they are handeled by IE instead of the WPF window. Regular characters works nicely. This is a known feature and previously when we used to have MFC based dialogs within this ActiveX we used this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187988. By just using this code directly the AfxGetApp()->PreTranslateMessage((LPMSG)lParam) statement will return FALSE, so I'm not able to get the key stroke to be handled by the WPF window. I beleive I need to ask the WPF application this instead of the CWinApp, but I'm not sure how and if this can be done. Does anyone have enough understanding of what's going on here to get this to work? Using XBAP instead of ActiveX is not an option as this is run in an intranet application which needs more access than the sandbox can give us. I hope this is enough information.     I am working on a project for work and have seemed to run into a small problem. The project is a similar program to Web Nanny, but branded to my client's company. It will have features such as website blocking by URL, keyword and web activity logs. I would also need it to be able to "pause" downloads until an acceptable username and password is entered. I found a script to monitor the URL visited in Internet Explorer (shown below), but it seems to slow the browser down considerably. I have not found any support or ideas onhow to implement this in other browsers. So, my questions are: 1). How to I monitor other browser activity / visited URLs? 2).   • Remove "Flash" between pages while using Internet Explorer modal boxes

    I have an internal web application, that is IE specific, and uses a lot of IE specific modal boxes: (window.showModalDialog). I recently received a request to remove the "flash" when navigating between pages of the site. To accomplish this, I just added a meta transition tag to my master page: <meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(duration=0.0)" /> This works perfectly except for the modal boxes. When you launch a modal box, and then move it around, the web page behind it keeps a trail of the modal box instead of re-drawing the web page content. This prevents the user from moving the modal box to read anything that was behind it. Is there a way to prevent the "flash" between pages in an IE specific site and have the site still work with modal boxes? Please note, this is a large and complex site, so re-architecting it to not use modal boxes isn't an option.   • jQuery crashing Internet Explorer

    Hello. Okay basically, I'm designing and developing a fairly complicated website which revolves around the use of jQuery.. My knowlege of jQuery is really poor and this is the first time I've properly used it. I posted a question here before about the script and apparently its awful, but I didn't show you exactly what I was actually writing it for, which I can now.. Because I've uploaded it onto a test directory. It now works fine in every browser other than IE. The CSS styling is getting there and it should be close to finish soon! However, Internet Explorer is showing bad problems.. In IE 7,8 it looks fine but when you go to hover over a link, it immediately crashes. IE 6, the display doesn't seem to be working properly at all. But IE 6 is a lesser problem. If you could take just 5 or 10 minutes to potentially rewrite a simple script which would potentially take me 10 hours, I would be so so grateful!   • Very Unusual Margin Appears Always in Internet Explorer [CSS]

    Only in Internet Explorer does this occur: I'm getting an additional margin (of 19 pixels) below a fieldset and I can't seem to see why, whatever I try! Try it for yourself, take a look at http://theshrop.com/d/call_us_or_call_in.php. To aid I've added a grid and some background colours. The fieldset should have a 1.125em bottom margin and it does in Safari, Firefox etc. It has an extra 19 pixels in Internet Explorer?   • Open a new browser window from embeded Internet Explorer

    I am working on a Windows desktop app (C++) that has an embedded Internet Explorer page. I'm working on the html page that is displayed in the There is not a back button control, so one of the requests is that links clicked on in the page should open the link in a browser window. It can open the link in the users default browser or in IE. Is this possible? I realize that this is not possible because javascript is in a sandbox and cannot touch outside applications. I'm thinking there might be a way because it is using the IE. I have tried the two methods that have worked for me in the past. Using jquery, I've tried these two approaches, but neither work in the app. They both work fine in normal browsers. Using target="_blank" $( "a" ).attr( "target", "_blank" ); The other is using window.open: $( "a" ).click( function() { window.open( $( this ).attr( "href" ) ); } ); I'm afraid that writing windows desktop applications is outside my area of expertise, so I cannot give more information regarding that side of the issue.

  • Internet Explorer randomly drops sessions between pages in cakePHP

    Hello everyone, I've come across an extremely unusual bug that my team has literally no idea how to solve. Doing some research, I found some similar solutions that I thought would work, but alas did not. Here is my situation, let me know if I can provide additional insight to help solve the problem. The first step is that someone chooses a country via a flash map. Flash passes this region name (as well as a date) through the URL, which we then convert to a session. The next page contains no Flash and doesn't display the selected region, but it does hold on to it for further down the process. Everything works perfectly in Safari and Firefox; however, in IE sometimes unexpected results occur. Frequently (but not always), the session is dropped completely and no sessions are stored between the first and 2nd pages. Here are the steps that I have taken thus far, unsuccessfully: 1. Changed Security from Medium - Low 2. Changed CheckUserAgent from True - False 3. Changed storing of sessions from PHP - Database Some additional information that may be useful: I have tried printing out the session data in Debug (debug($_SESSION) on my view file and debug set to 2 in config). In Internet Explorer everything prints out as expected EXCEPT when the region and date don't get set. For example: If the region and date don't get set NOTHING is printed out for debug. I don't get the session details at the top, and I don't get the normal dump of calls at the bottom of the page either. I am not using redirection on these pages. Please let me know if you have ANY idea of what is causing this or any solutions. I am beyond frustrated and have tried as much as I can to solve this. Thanks!

    There are plenty of solutions on how to get the indexOf implementation into the Array prototype so that it works under Internet Explorer, however I've stumbled upon an issue that doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere I've looked so far. Using the pretty well agreed upon implementation at MDC, I have the following code that's being problematic now: // indexOf support for IE (from MDC) if (!Array.prototype.indexOf) { Array.prototype.indexOf = function(elt /*, from*/) { var len = this.length >>> 0; var from = Number(arguments[1]) || 0; from = (from < 0) ? In Firefox and Chrome, that's exactly what I see, however in IE8 I get an additional alert containing the indexOf function code. What can be done to avoid this?

In Firefox and Chrome, that's exactly what I see, however in IE8 I get an additional alert containing the indexOf function code. What can be done to avoid this?

    I'm having frequent disconnects with my new install of Ubuntu 12.10. I tried updating the kernel driver to the latest intel release to no avail. My expertise is spent.   • Lightning strike causes fast download?

    Ok, REALLY strange question. My friend says he was downloading a 14 GB file at about 1 mb/s when suddenly there was a lightning strike outside and momentarily the download speed jumped to 10,000,000 GB/s. The file finnished downloading. He even has the screenshot to prove it. I also trust him and don't believe that he would be lying. So my question is: how is this even possible?? Is there just the possibility that the file was about to finish downloading anyway and the lightning strike coincided with a freak download speed calculation error?

  • How to monitor the temperature of a HP Procurve 3500 switch via SNMP

    I am attempting to poll the temperature of an HP ProCurve 3500YL switch remotely using SNMP. Looking at this MIB, it appears that the following OIDs: hpCpuTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.6 hpPowerSupplyTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.7 hpChassisTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.8 Within the 'hpProcurveSysMib' should provide the data I need. However, whenever I attempt to access these OIDs, I receive the response: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.6 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID Further investigation reveals that the switch in question does not appear to implement the parent hpProcurveSystem MIB: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID Does anyone know of an alternative MIB implemented by the 3500 that will allow its temperature to be polled automatically?

  • Links not opening in Windows 8 applications

    I have just upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Ultimate with IE9 to Windows 8 with IE 10. When ever I try to open a web link in an application nothing happens. For example in the Windows 8 mail application it makes the email address in an email look like a link. When I click on these with the mouse the link changes to look like I have clicked on it, but aside from that nothing happens. I have tried making sure that IE 10 is my default web browser and been into IE10's settings and associated it with all the usual file types, but still no success. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this? I have a feeling this started when the Browser Choice update ran. I couldn't select which browser to install in that either. The install buttons just flashed when I clicked them and then nothing. PS I would have added an IE10 tag to this post, but apparently I don't have the reputation required to do so.
