  In an effort to improve the user experience changes have been made to Service Request (SR) creation process using My Oracle Support (MOS). This change is now online for several high-use CRM products. We aimed to streamline the process by reducing the number of questions, making subsequent questions conditional on previous responses, reducing lists of problem categories, and recommending key documents/evidence which should be supplied to help the Support engineer progress the issue. • package update in ubuntu on vitual box

  while following one of the tutorials I needed to install a curl package. Here are my system configuration: Virtualbox 4.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on the virtual box. When I try the following: sudo apt-get install curl I see the following errors: [sudo] password for userMe: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package curl is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'curl' has no installation candidate userMe@userMe-ubuntu:~$ When I try the same on a direct installation of ubuntu on a laptop (not a virtual machine) there is no problem. I am assuming this may be because of network settings. Please note that my work PC is in a corporate network and uses auto proxy settings (using a .pac file) for internet access etc. Any help will be appreciated.

• Show Ubuntu logo in Byobu (tmux) status bar?

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Further information: sudo apt-get install ttf-ubuntu-font-family Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

• After running updates in 10.10 Netbook Remix, Ralink 5390 Not working

  Additional Drivers still lists the driver. Reports it as being activated but not in use. Prior to running updates, wireless was working fine. Set it up using this guide: http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/02/how-to-install-drivers-for-ralink.html Thoughts and reflections would be much appreciated. ... nm. Using Synaptic Package Manager, marked for reinstallation, reinstalled, rebooted. Back to the way things were. Little new to this side of the world. ;)

• Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks [closed]

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.

• Latest alestic ec2 Ubuntu instance seems broken

  I am using alestic.com ec2 Ubuntu instances now for some time and never had a problem with. Today I created a new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise EBS boot on US-east-1, seems to be a bad build. While doing a sudo apt-get update it breaks and says: W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_main_source_Sources Hash Sum mismatch This is on a fresh instance. So I recon something went wrong when creating it. What can be done to fix it?

• What to do when there are no logical user stories but separate development tasks?

  We need to generate a release in 3 weeks, and for the planning we are doing today we don't have coherent logical user stories from the backlog tasks. Is valid to match say each development task is equivalent to an user story? Methodologically what is the correct way of handling this?, because anyway we are going to have standup meetings and we are going to control the progress of the project against those development tasks. For example, we have things like: . Adapt ETL to process numeric lists . Adjust licensing component . Remove DTC and so on. So, for the planning poker and iteration planning is valid to use those tasks? if not, what is the alternative?

• Can data classes contain methods for validation?

  OK, say I have a data class for a user: public class User { private String firstName; private String lastName; private long personCode; private Date birthDate; private Gender gender; private String email; private String password; Now let's say I want to validate email, whether names are not empty, whether birth date is in normal range, etc. Can I put that validation method in this class together with data? Or should it be in UserManager which in my case handles the lists of these users?

  With backlinkwatch.com I can get a list of pages that link to a particular website. Unfortunately, it lists tons of obscure blogs and small forums, it has hard to find what link is really important. Is there a similar service, where links would be displayed sorted by "importance"? For instance, a link New York Times would be shown at the top of the list, while links in small blogs would not appear before a few pages. "Importance" can be subjective, so I suggest using the PageRank, but other metrics could be fine too.

• Not enough space left in the hard drive. How to proceed?

  Where do I begin... I can hardly do anything on Ubuntu 12.04. I am very close to removing and returning to Windows. First I could not load it because the graphics appeared to be running low but somehow that stopped happening and I could log on. Now I can not download anything or I get this message Cannot write: No space left on device. I tried trouble shooting this issue but every time I try and fix the problem I am blocked by this message E: Write error - write (28: No space left on device) E: Can't mmap an empty file E: Failed to truncate file - ftruncate (9: Bad file descriptor) E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. $ OLD=$(ls -tr /boot/vmlinuz-* | head -n -2 | cut -d- -f2- | awk '{print "linux-image-" $0}') Ubuntu is also running incredibly slow and I cant get anything done! Please help this is driving me mad!

  I have a mathematics background but also consider career in some form of software development. In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. However, where am I more likely to encounter problems of more discrete maths nature (combinatorial, graph theory, sets, strings, ...) explicitly or more likely in disguise. Any pointers much appreciated (including possible open source projects that I could use for my further search for applications and also possibly contribute to).

• New 12.10 Install, Windows Not in Boot Menu

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my new computer alongside my previous Windows 7 installation. Upon booting for the first time (post install) my boot menu only lists Ubuntu. I installed using a liveCD, I had to set up my partitions myself because my Windows wasn't being detected (I set up the new partition out of free space on the drive.). I know Ubuntu did not overwrite my Windows because I can mount the Windows drive and access the files from here I also tried running boot-repair, as was recommended for people who didn't have Ubuntu showing up in the menu, but now I just have two different Ubuntu options. Still no windows. (if you require any additional data [logs, etc.], could you tell me how to find it, I am a bit new to this.) Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  Is there a command that will show which file system (ext3, ext4, FAT32, ...) the various partitions and disks are using? Similar to how sudo fdisk -l lists information about disks and partitions? Update Accepted the "mount" answer as mount works without specifying filesystem type (commenting out the relevant entries in fstab, if any): $ sudo mount /dev/sdf1 /mnt/tmp $ mount | grep /mnt/tmp /dev/sdf1 on /mnt/tmp type ext3 (rw) Found another option in ubuntuforums - blkid: # system disk $ sudo blkid /dev/sda1 /dev/sda1: UUID="...."   Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. • How could I manage Google Adsense to approve my Web App? It keeps denying it

  Google adsense keeps denying my app from having ads, because of an "insufficient content" issue. I manage a Web Application that allows the users to set Youtube Videos as Alarm Clocks. It includes an in-site Youtube search to retrieve videos from user queries and lists the users alarms. The site has a good traffic (500 users per day), is currently promoted by Google in Google Chrome Webstore, and the ajax requests are crawlable, following Google's guidelines (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/). Although I understand there is not much content, beyond the user-generated, I really don't what else should I include in the site. Perhaps adding contact and about pages, and maybe another section would increase the navigation. Google argues I need a "fully launched and functioning site, allowing users to navigate throughout your site with a menu, sitemap, or appropiate links". They also ask for "full sentences or paragraphs" Isn't a Google Adsense solutions for Web Applications? Would all the web-apps have to include useless navigable subpages?

• Does setting document.domain via script interfere with Google Analytics?

  I have a site, www.example.com, that displays some secure content from forms.example.com in iframes. To enable cross-frame navigation, pages on both sites use JavaScript to set the document.domain to just "example.com". I am using Google Analytics on www.example.com, but the GA site is not showing any data. It indicates that the tracking code is found (the status icon is a green checkmark), but no data is reported. The GA profile lists the website as "www.example.com". Is this a supported scenario? Is my script interfering with the GA code in some way?

• Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Alot of Pirated Material on Someone's Website - What Can Be Done?

  Hi, We've developed our website for over 10 years. Recently a website in China has begun to pirate our images and product descriptions (they are showing "new" March offerings). Nearly all of the items they "offer" are ours. Their whois leads to an outfit in France which by chance also hosts a website for Steroids, and both the Steroid and the pirate site share an 800 phone number (coincidence??). The pirate site lists "their" products as being available in mass quantities, though very often the actual product is one-of-a-kind. The images they've stolen appear in google searches alongside our own!! Clicking on any product at the pirate site leads to nowhere. Calls to the 800 number lead to a recorded answer.
