    It took me a while to work through the 800+ pages of this title. And yes, I really mean working not reading... Since the release of Windows 8 it should be obvious to any Windows software developer that there are new ways to develop, deploy and market applications for a broader audience. Interestingly, Microsoft started to narrow the technological gap between the various platforms - desktop, web, smartphone and XBox - and development of modern apps with HTML, CSS and JavaScript couldn't be easier. Kraig covers all facets of modern Windows 8 apps from the basic building blocks and project templates in Visual Studio 2012 over to the thoughtful use of specific APIs to finally proper deployment in the App Store and potential monetization. The organisation of the book is lied out like step by step instructions or a tutorial. Kraig literally takes the reader by the hand and explains in detail in his examples about the reasons, the pros, and the cons of a certain way of implementation. Thanks to cross-references to other chapters he leaves the choice to the reader to dig deeper right now or to catch up at some time later. Personally, I have to admit that I really enjoyed the relaxed writing style. App development is not dust-dry rocket science and it should be joyful to learn about new technologies. And thanks to the richness of the various chapters and samples you could easily adapt and transfer the knowledge gained in this title to other platforms like Windows Phone 8. In other words, what are the limitation of .NET Web services which were overcome in WCF services? I understand that WCF are REST based and .NET web services are SOAP based. But I need to know more than that. How a developer will make a design decision whether to developer a Web service or a WCF service?

  • Outlook 2010: How do I mark one recurring event public?

    My office utilizes Outlook 2010 and Exchange for e-mail, and our calendars show free/busy information by default. Background I work from home once a week, so I have created an event that lists me as tentative for the entire workday, titled "Working from Home - Available Remotely". However, those attempting to schedule a meeting with me won't see this title, and therefore won't think they can schedule an event. As much as I'd like to get out meetings (!) it's important that folks be able to schedule with me. Question Is there a way to make the title/details public for this one recurring event so that when others attempt to schedule a meeting with me, Attempted Solutions I've tried creating a public calendar and sharing all the details of that calendar. However, all of my calendars are not included when someone wants to schedule with me, and so I'm shown as free unless someone specifically looks at my public calendar. I've Googled around, to no avail.

  • Microsoft Access: computer freezes when user tries to update record

    A colleague and I have developed an Access 2003 database which is used throughout our department. Currently about four dozen people do data entry using one of two very similar forms. If 47 of us use them, they work perfectly. If Mr. 48 clicks the "Save" button, Windows XP freezes and a hard reset is needed. The problem has to be on his specific computer (Dell latitude D630) and not in the code because this problem only affects him. Complicating the matter: I don't work for IS, and this project is not supported by IS. If I'm going to get our tech support to fix the problem I had better be able to explain exactly what to do and how to do it, because they aren't going to invest any resources. I don't even have admin rights on the computer (and neither does its regular user). I've asked him to bring his laptop the next time he visits my building. (Just to make matters worse, he doesn't usually work in the same location as me or the other developer.) Any suggestions on debugging the problem? My first try will be to uninstall and reinstall Office, which I can do using corporate utilities without being admin. Note: yes, those are old versions of Office and Windows. We expect to upgrade later this year.

  • Why is purchasing Microsoft licences such a daunting task? [closed]

    I've spent 2 frustrating days jumping through hoops and browsing through different local e-shops for VS (Visual Studio) 2010 Pro. And WHS (Windows Home Server) FPP 2011 licenses. I found jack .. - or to be more precise, the closest I found in my country was WHS OEM 2011 licenses after multiple emails sent to individuals found on Microsoft partners page. Question being, why is it so difficult to get your hands on Microsoft licenses as an individual? Sure, you can get the latest end user operating systems from most shops, but when it comes to development tools or server software you are left dry. And companies that do sell licenses most of the time don't even put up pricing or a self service environment for buying the licenses, you need to have an hawk's eye for that shiny little Microsoft partner logo and spam through bunch of emails not knowing, if you can count on them to get the license or not. Sure, i could whip out my credit card and buy the VS 2010 license on the online Microsoft Shop. Well whippideegoddamndoo, they sell that, but they don't sell WHS 11 licenses. Why does a company make it so hard to buy their products? Let's not even talk about the licensing itself being a pain.

  • Rename outlook2007 categories not working

    Hi, I'm new to outlook 2007 and I'm trying to rename a category. Acordingly to MS, I can achieve it by just renaming it: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA012316361033.aspx But as soon as I click the OK button, confirming the change, it returns to it's original value. For instance, if I rename the "Blue Category" to "Home" it will accept without erros. But, when I click again in the Categorize icon, I'll see that the "Blue Category" is still there, and my "Home" category does not exist. Has someone experienced this kind of problem? TIA, Bob

  • Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

    I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)

  • Accessing SQL Server data from iOS apps

    Almost all mobile apps need access to external data to be valuable. With a huge amount of existing business data residing in Microsoft SQL Server databases, and an ever-increasing drive to make more and more available to mobile users, how do you marry the rather separate worlds of Microsoft's SQL Server and Apple's iOS devices? The classic answer: write a web service layer Look at any of the questions on this topic asked in Internet discussion forums, and you'll inevitably see the answer, "just write a web service and use that!". But what does this process gain? For a well-designed database with a solid security model, and business logic in the database, writing a custom web service on top of this just to access some of the data from a different platform seems inefficient and unnecessary. Desktop applications interact with the SQL Server directly - why should mobile apps be any different? The better answer: the iSql SDK Working along the lines of "if you do something more than once, make it shared," we set about coming up with a better solution for the general case. And so the iSql SDK was born: sitting between SQL Server and your iOS apps, it provides the simple API you're used to if you've been developing desktop apps using the Microsoft SQL Native Client. It turns out a web service remained a sensible idea: HTTP is much more suited to the Big Bad Internet than SQL Server's native TDS protocol, removing the need for complex configuration, firewall configuration, and the like. However, rather than writing a web service for every app that needs data access, we made the web service generic, serving only as a proxy between the SQL Server and a client library integrated into the iPhone or iPad app. This client library handles all the network communication, and provides a clean API. OSQL in 25 lines of code As an example of how to use the API, I put together a very simple app that allowed the user to enter one or more SQL statements, and displayed the results in a rather primitively formatted text field. The total amount of Objective-C code responsible for doing the work? About 25 lines. You can see this in action in the demo video. Beta out now - your chance to give us your suggestions!   • Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

    I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

    I know that may sound a little vague, so I'll try and explain a little further... After being self employed developer for many years I'm now in search of a commercial web developer role. My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

In Vista this isnt a problem, all I have to do there is to run "dcomcnfg" and in there find the Microsoft Excel dcom file. In Windows 7 I cant find it, and I have no idea what to do now... If anyone could help me that would be great!

  • Java - Problem in deploying Web Application

    I have built a Java Web Application and packed it in a .war file and tested it on my local tomcat server and it is running fine. But when I deployed it on my client's server, it is showing an error. According to the remote server (my client's server), it is not finding a tld file packed in a jar file which I had placed in WEB-INF/lib directory. But when I checked the WEB-INF/lib directory for the jar file, i found that it was there. The contents of META-INF/MANIFEST.MF is as follows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: I think that there is no need to explicitly mention the classpath of WEB-INF/lib directory as it is in the classpath of any web application by default. Then, why the server can't find the jar file in the lib directory when I deployed it on a remote server and why it is working when I deployed the same application on my local server. I posted a question for this at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2441254/struts-1-struts-taglib-jar-is-not-being-found-by-my-web-application but found that the problem is unusual as nobody could answer it. So my questions are as follows: Q1. Is WEB-INF/lib still remains on the classpath if I leave the classpath entry blank as shown above in the MANIFEST.MF file or I should delete the classpath entry completely from the file or I should explicitly enter Class-Path: /WEB-INF/lib as the classpath entry? Q2. I have JSP pages, Servlets and some helper classes in the web application. Jsp pages are located at the root. Servlets and helper classes are located in WEB-INF/classes folder. So Is there any problem if my helper classes are located in the WEB-INF/classes folder? Note: Please note that this question is not same as my previous question. It is a follow-up question of my previous question. Both the servers (local and remote) are tomcat servers.

  • ASP.NET Web Service Throws 401 (unauthorized) Error

    Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment. But, this is working perfectly in my environment. OS: Windows Server SP1 IIS 6 .NET 3.5 Framework Any idea about the 401 (Unauthorized) issue?? Thx for the help... This is from the log...   • Is there a way to identify which web framework is used in a site?

    Whenever I come across a cute website, I am always curious to know which web framework was used by its developers? Being a novice in web development, a look at the page source doesn't give any clue. Any way(s) to get this information? If possible, may be with a bit of Ruby magic, I can figure out things like: which is the most/least used framework for my favorite sites, audio/video heavy sites, etc.

    Attended an interesting demo on REST today, however, I couldn't think of a single reason (nor was one presented) why REST is in anyway better or simpler to use and implement than a Web Services stack. What are some of the reasons Why anyone in the "real world" use REST instead of the Web Services?
