• Handling messages for window from other process

  I'm developing a C# WPF application that reparents the main window of another application using a call to Win32 SetParent(). The handle to this out-of-process child window is wrapped by a class named FormHost which is derived from HwndHost. All is working well except for one thing: messages for the reparented window are not delivered to FormHost. MSDN documentation clearly states that the HwndHost window procedure WndProc() cannot be used with out-of-process windows. The alternative, MessageHook doesn't work either. I also tried calling AttachThreadInput() to combine the input processing of the two windows. No luck. Any suggestions?

• Marshaling an array of IntPtrs in C#

  From safe, managed code in C#, I would like to call a function in a C API that receives an array of pointers (void**). I have the corresponding managed array of IntPtr objects, but the Marshal methods advertised in the documentation at MSDN do not seem sufficient to provide and IntPtr to an unmanaged block of memory with the correct content. I had hoped to obtain an IntPtr with 'Marshal.AllocHGlobal' and then assign the correct content using 'Marshal.Copy', but it seems the function has not been overloaded for an array of IntPtr. Any thoughts on the best way to do this? Thanks in advance.

  I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window.   I have read on MSDN(see Important note) that RSACryptoServiceProvider must be disposed. They give the example: using (RSACryptoServiceProvider RSA = new RSACryptoServiceProvider()) Now I'm trying to include RSACryptoServiceProvider into MyClass making use of it in several Methods. With this setup I cannot use the using statement. Instead I try to call the .Dispose() Method of the RSACryptoServiceProvider object at a suitable time but then I get the compile error message: `System.Security.Cryptography.AsymmetricAlgorithm.Dispose(bool)' is inaccessible due to its protection level Is RSACryptoServiceProvider not supposed to be used longer than one function call(using the using statement)? How can I fix this, is not making the Dispose call an option?

• in TFS can we customize the merge algorithm (conflict resolution)

  In our case we want to igonore changes in code comment headers for generated code. In Visual Studio, we can change the merge tool (GUI that pops up) and use a 3rd party tool that is able to be customized to ignore changes (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181446.aspx). Great, so a file comparison no longer highlights code comments as differences. However when it comes time to checkin, the TFS merge algorith is still prompting us to resolve conflicts. Is there any way to better inform the merge conflict resolution algorithm about which changes are actually important to us? Or can we replace the algorithm or otherwise have it subcontract its work to a 3rd party?

• How to read FoxPro Memo with PHP?

  I have to convert .DBF and .FPT files from Visual FoxPro to MySQL. Right now my script works for .DBF files, it opens and reads them with dbase_open() and dbase_get_record_with_names() and then executes the MySQL INSERT commands. However, some fields of these .DBF files are of type MEMO and therefore stored in a separate files ending in .FPT. How do I read this file? I have found the specifications of this filetype in MSDN, but I don't know how I can read this file byte-wise with PHP (also, I would really prefer a simplier solution). Any ideas?

• What is the best XPS WYSIWYG Editor that will output XAML?

  I am looking for a WYSIWYG for XPS that will ouput the raw XAML. My intentions is use the tool for a way to quickly generate and test the XAML (of XPS documents) with the intention of then generating the same xaml in code and programmatically generating an XPS document. The same approach that many people use for generating html. Can anyone recommend any of the below products or suggest any others? Better yet does anyone know of a free XPS editor?   msdn: "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." it contains only instance methods. How should I use it in a way that all activity gets recorder by TextWriterTraceListener to a text file. Is one static member which all threads use (by calling) TraceEvent-method safe. (I've kind of asked this question in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1901086/how-to-instantiate-c-tracesources-to-log-multithreaded-asp-net-2-0-web-applica, but I cannot just believe if somebody just says it's OK despite the documentation).

• WCF - Compact Framework - Pull data from mobile client

  Hello guys, I want to communicate xml serialized objects from the server to the client and the other way arround. Now it is (probably) easy to invoke methods from a mobile client (compact framework) using WCF, but is there a way so that the server can invoke methods on the client side or some other way to pull data from the client? I know that callback contracts are not available in the compact framework as you can see here: http://blogs.msdn.com/andrewarnottms/archive/2007/09/13/calling-wcf-services-from-netcf-3-5-using-compact-wcf-and-netcfsvcutil-exe.aspx Originally I thought of socket programming and of developing this by myself, then someone here mentioned WCF. But it seems like WCF only would work in a non mobile environment as I need callbacks. Anyone can help me with this? Is it possible to develop a two way communication with a desktop server and multiple mobile clients using WCF, or will I have to do socket programming? Thanks for any advice or any kind of help!

• How to run a PowerShell script?

  Guys and Gals, a really stupid question: How do I run a PowerShell script? I have a script named myscript.ps1 I have all the necessary frameworks installed I set that execution policy thing I have followed the instructions on this MSDN help page and am trying to run it like so: powershell.exe 'C:\my_path\yada_yada\run_import_script.ps1' (with or withot --noexit) which returns exactly nothing, except that the file name is output. No error, no message, nothing. Oh, when I add -noexit, the same thing happens but I remain within Powershell, and have to exit manually. The ps1 file is supposed to run a program, and return the error level dependant on that program's output. But I'm quite sure I'm not even getting there yet. What am I doing wrong?

• How can you centre an image within the image control in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008?

  I have got an image in an image control on a report in SSRS 2008. The image is coming from an external source, and varies in width. I would like to centre the image within the control, but the image control does not have an equivalent of the text box's TextAlign property to allow right/left/center alignment to be done automatically. I have seen methods to dynamically calculate the amount of left padding as a hack to solve this, http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/10/27/CenteredImages.aspx, but the solution gives an error in SSRS 2008, perhaps not surprising given the age of the article. Has anybody got a solution to this for SSRS 2008?

• What happens after a packet is captured?

  Hi all, I've been reading about what happens after packets are captured by NICs, and the more I read, the more I'm confused. Firstly, I've read that traditionally, after a packet is captured by the NIC, it gets copied to a block of memory in the kernel space, then to the user space for whatever application that then works on the packet data. Then I read about DMA, where the NIC directly copies the packet into memory, bypassing the CPU. So is the NIC - kernel memory - User space memory flow still valid? Also, do most NIC (e.g. Myricom) use DMA to improve packet capture rates? Secondly, does RSS (Receive Side Scaling) work similarly in both Windows and Linux systems? I can only find detailed explanations on how RSS works in MSDN articles, where they talk about how RSS (and MSI-X) works on Windows Server 2008. But the same concept of RSS and MSI-X should still apply for linux systems, right? Thank you. Regards, Rayne

  I've seen two different manners that programmers approach when creating an entity context in their code. The first is like such, and you can find it all over the MSDN code examples: public void DoSomething() { using TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities()) { // business logic and whatever else } } The second is to create the context as a private attribute in some class that encapsulates your business logic. So you would have something like: public class Education_LINQ { private TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities(); public void DoSomething() { var result = from a in context.luAction select a; // business logic and whatever else } } Which way is more efficient? Assume that you have two methods, one called DoSomething1() and another called DoSomething2(), and both methods incorporate the using statement to open the context and do whatever with it. Were you to call one method after the other, would there be any superfluous overhead going on, since essentially both methods create the context and then clean it up when they're done? As opposed to having just one private attribute that is created when a class object is instantiated, and then in turn cleaned up when the object goes out of scope?

Problem here is the xwriter.WriteElementString will escape all "<" and "" symbols with &lt and &gt. I have checked MSDN to see if there is a way to disable it, but have not found an answer. Is there a way to disable the auto-escape features?

• Drop target - where do I register the COleDropTarget variable if the view class doesn't have OnCreat

  The MSDN site says: From your view class's function that handles the WM_CREATE message (typically OnCreate), call the new member variable's Register member function. Revoke will be called automatically for you when your view is destroyed. But I don't have an OnCreate function in the ChildView class. I do have OnCreate in the CMainFrame class. Can I register it there? What are the ramifications? PLEASE NOTE: I have it working for dropping files but I want to drop the text as a file, not at a cursor location like a text cut and paste, but rather I want the application to make a buffer to hold it, and I will treat it like a file.   Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Abnormal Program Termination (BugCheck, STOP: 0x00000035 (0x8E984678, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS Following the standard process of raising this problem with Microsoft they identify the problem and also a fix. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot. It's a fairly big subject so am hoping somone on here as here as got some good reading materials on that cover these subjects. At this very moment in time, im reading this; Tutorial01 Its not much, but its a good starting point. I'm not a big fan MSDN and the way its structured and layout, I mainly use it for framework related questions like classes and interfaces and etc. WHen it comes to tutorials, i prefer thrid party websites. • How can I use data binding in WPF to create a new user control for each element in a list?

  I have a list of objects. For each item in the list, I want to create a new user control bound to that item. From what I've read, doing this programmatically is bad practice with WPF (as well as less than straightforward), so I should use data binding as a solution instead. The problem is, I can't figure out how to do this. I don't know the contents of the list (just the type) at compile-time, so I can't create and bind with XAML for each element. Google and MSDN don't seem to have any answers, so maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way? What do I need to do? Thanks

• Is Transport security a bad practice for the WCF service over the Internet?

  Hello, I have a WCF service accessible over the Internet. It has wsHttpBinding binding and message security mode with username credentials to authenticate clients. The msdn says that we should use message security for the Internet scenarios, because it provides end-to-end security instead of point-to-point security as Transport security has. What if i use transport security for the wcf service over the Internet? Is it a bad practice? Could my data be seen by malicious users? Thanks, Sergey

• How does Linq-to-Xml convert objects to strings?

  Linq-to-Xml contains lots of methods that allow you to add arbitrary objects to an xml tree. These objects are converted to strings by some means, but I can't seem to find the specification of how this occurs. The conversion I'm referring to is mentioned (but not specified) in MSDN. I happen to need this for javascript interop, but that doesn't much matter to the question. Linq to Xml isn't just calling .ToString(). Firstly, it'll accept null elements, and secondly, it's doing things no .ToString() implementation does: For example: new XElement("elem",true).ToString() == "<elem>true</elem>" //but... true.ToString() == "True" //IIRC, this is culture invariant, but in any case... true.ToString(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) == "True" Other basic data types are similarly specially treated. So, does anybody know what it's doing and where that's described?

• Question on SyndicationItem - ASP.NET

  I am trying to understand how to use SyndicationItem to display feed which is RSS 2.0 or Atom compliant. What property of SyndicationItem gives me the entire description of the post. It appears that there is a Summary property but per MSDN, it gives only the Summary. Also I have noticed that in my RSS feed reader, some RSS feeds show only a few lines of description and I have to click and go to the website for the full post. But in some feeds, I can see the full post within the Feed Reader. Can someone explain how all this comes together? PS: My web page lets user enter a RSS feed address and I need to validate if the feed exists. If it does, I need to grab the last x items and show the feed's title and full description

• DragDrop-Support of PictureBox-Control

  After some searching i figured out how dragdrop is implemented for a picturebox. But there is one thing - the (inherited of course) allowdrop property isn't accessible from code or property window of picturebox class. So to make it work i added following line to my form-load: ((Control)pictureBox1).AllowDrop = true; Why do i have to do that? In msdn it says: "This API supports the .NET Framework infrastructure and is not intended to be used directly from your code." Any explanation appreciated and sorry for my grammar ;)
