    I have a controller plugin with postDispatch() hook, and there I have a $variable. How to pass this variable to the view instance? I tried Zend_Layout::getMvcInstance()->getView(), but this returns new view instance (not the application resource). The same with $bootstrap->getResource('view'). I don't want to pass it as a request param. Now, as a workaround I do it using Zend_Registry. But, is it the best way?

    I am trying to allow ldap users to change their password on client machines. I have tried pam every which way I can think of /etc/ldap.conf & /etc/pam_ldap.conf, as well. At this point I'm stuck. Client: Ubuntu 11.04 Server: Debian 6.0 The current output is this: sobrien4@T-E700F-1:~$ passwd passwd: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info passwd: password unchanged /var/log/auth.log gives this during the command: May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_unix(passwd:chauthtok): user "sobrien4" does not exist in /etc/passwd May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server... May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server getent passwd |grep sobrien4 (note keeping short since testing with that account, however it outputs all ldap users): sobrien4:Ffm1oHzwnLz0U:10000:12001:Sean O'Brien:/home/sobrien4:/bin/bash getent group shows all ldap groups. /etc/pam.d/common-password (Note this is just the most current, I have tried a lot of different options): password required pam_cracklib.so retry=3 minlen=8 difok=3 password [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so use_authtok md5 password required pam_ldap.so use_authtok password required pam_permit.so Popped open wireshark as well, the server & client are talking. I have the password changing working on the server. I.E. the server that runs slapd, I can log in with the ldap user and change the passwords. I tried copying the working configs from the server initially and no dice. I also tried cloning it, and just changing ip & host, and no go. My guess is that the client is not authorized by ip or hostname to change a pass. Pertaining to the slapd conf, I saw this in a guide and tried it: access to attrs=loginShell,gecos by dn="cn=admin,dc=cengineering,dc=etb" write by self write by * read access to * by dn="cn=admin,dc=cengineering,dc=etb" write by self write by * read So ldap seems to be working okay, just can't change the password.

    I am attempting to get Prosody authenticating with its auth_pam module. It is configured to use the pam service name xmpp. The pam.d/xmpp file is copied straight from the one configured for dovecot (originally taken from, I think, dovecot's documentation), which is known to be working: # cat /etc/pam.d/xmpp auth required pam_unix.so nullok debug account required pam_unix.so debug Logging in with dovecot works wonderfully. I can't manage to figure out how to pass that header to the site I'm attempting to open via the proxy.     I have an alias that passes in some parameters to a tool that I use often. Sometimes I run as myself, sometimes under sudo. Unfortunately, of course, sudo doesn't recognise the alias. Does anyone have a hint on how to pass the alias through? In this case, I have a bunch of options for perl when I'm debugging: alias pd='perl -Ilib -I/home/myuser/lib -d' Sometimes, I have to debug my tools as root, so, instead of running: pd ./mytool --some params I need to run it under sudo. I've tried many ways: sudo eval $(alias pd)\; pd ./mytool --some params sudo $(alias pd)\; pd ./mytool --some params sudo bash -c "$(alias pd)\; pd ./mytool --some params" sudo bash -c "$(alias pd); pd ./mytool --some params" sudo bash -c eval\ "$(alias pd)\; pd ./mytool --some params" sudo bash -c eval\ "'$(alias pd)\; pd ./mytool --some params'" I was hoping for a nice, concise way to ensure that my current pd alias was fully used (in case I need to tweak it later), though some of my attempts weren't concise at all. My last resort is to put it into a shell script and put that somewhere that sudo will be able to find. But aliases are soooo handy sometimes, so it is a last resort.

  • Why cache static files with Varnish, why not pass

    I have a system runnning nginx / php-fpm / varnish / wordpress and amazon s3. Now I have looked at a lot of configuration files while setting up the system, and in all of them I found something like this: /* If the request is for pictures, javascript, css, etc */ if (req.url ~ "\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|css|js)$") { /* Remove the cookie and make the request static */ unset req.http.cookie; return (lookup); } I do not understand why this is done. Most of the examples also run NginX as a webserver. Now the question is, why would you use the varnish cache to cache these static files. It makes much more sense to me to only cache the dynamic files so that php-fpm / mysql don't get hit that much. Am I correct or am I missing something here? UPDATE I want to add some info to the question based on the answer given. If you have a dynamic website, where the content actually changes a lot, chaching does not make sense. But if you use WordPress for a static website for example, this can be cached for long periods of time. That said, more important to me is static conent. I have found a link with some test and benchmarks on different cache apps and webserver apps. http://nbonvin.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/apache-vs-nginx-vs-varnish-vs-gwan/ NginX is actually faster in getting your static content, so it makes more sense to just let it pass. NginX works great with static files. -- Apart from that, most of the time static content is not even in the webserver itself. Most of the time this content is stores on a CDN somewhere, maybe AWS S3, something like that. I think the varnish cache is the last place where you want to have you static content stored.
