• Real VNC won't connect to OS X Leopard VNC server

  I have 3 machines. 2 Macs, 1 Dell. 1 of the Macs is running as a VNC server and the other Mac connects great with Chicken of the VNC. Sadly, this app does not exist for Windows so I'm using RealVNC to view from Windows. I connect the exact same way as with the Mac, but on Windows when it connects, I see a program pop up and then immediately close. I have tried all options available on RealVNC and nothing changes things. Anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?

• Writing an SVN hook that updates copy of committed code

  I have a SVN repository with a lot of sub-projects stored in it. Right now in my post-commit I just loop through all possible folders on the machine and run svn update on each: REPOS="$1" REV="$2" DIRS=("/path/to/local/copy/firstproject" "/path/to/local/copy/anotherproject" ... "/path/to/local/copy/spam") LOGNAME=`/usr/bin/whoami` for DIR in ${DIRS[@]} do cd $DIR sudo /usr/bin/svn update --accept=postpone 2>&1 | logger logger "$LOGNAME Updated $DIR to revision $REV (from $REPOS) " done The problem is that this is slow and redundant when I'm just committing the subfolder of one of the projects. I'm wondering if there's a better way of identifying which of the DIRS I should use and only update that one. Is there some way to do this? As far as I can tell there's no way to determine which part of a repo was committed and thus which directory needs to be updated. Is the only alternative to create a separate repository for each project? (Probably should have done that from the start, if so...)

• SPSiteDataQuery Returns Only One List Type At A Time

  The SPSiteDataQuery class in SharePoint 2007 is very powerful, but it has a few limitations.  One of these limitations that I ran into this morning (and caused hours of frustration) is that you can only return results from one list type at a time.  For example, if you are trying to query items from an out of the box custom list (list type = 100) and document library (list type = 101) you will only get items from the custom list (SPSiteDataQuery defaults to list type = 100.)  In my situation I was attempting to query multiple lists (created from custom list templates 10001 and 10002) each with their own content types. Solution     Since I am only able to return results from one list type at a time, I was forced to run my query twice with each time setting the ServerTemplate (translates to ListTemplateId if you are defining custom list templates) before executing the query.  Below is a snippet of the code to accomplish this.   We have an SVN setup and there are some things we dislike about it and some things we like about it. We want to move to git, but we're not sure exactly what setup will work for us. We're currently using SVN (w/ Authz) + Apache (w/ WebDAV & LDAP). Hook to update the live site [like] Live site update requires no additional interaction [like] Live site update uses stored password [dislike] Commits require centralized-password authentication [like] Commit from live site changes stored credentials [dislike] Access control (per repository) for commits [like] Point 5 above is the one that keeps stuffing us up. Someone makes a commit from the live site and then the hook breaks. We're thinking to use gitosis/gitolite to get access control, but as they use ssh keys, we won't be requiring passwords. We're also thinking to use git-http-backend, and use Apache for authentication, but then do we lose access control? Can the live site be automatically updated from a hook if Apache requires authentication? Can we combine git-http-backend and gitosis/gitolite somehow? Can we store http credentials with git?

• Slow boot time since upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10

  I have tried for quite a while now to reduce my boot time, disabled some startup items, removed packages that were causing crashes after boot, removed ureadahead pack files, reinstalled ureadahead, uninstalled ureadahead and installed e4rat....and nothing has made that much difference. e4rat made the biggest difference with a reduction of a few seconds but my boot time is still around 80 seconds. • Cisco router not receiving OSPF updates

  Or at least, that's what I think is happening. There doesn't appear to be a debug command for this, or to see if something is in the routing table. I'm testing out this setup in Packet Tracer. I have 3 routers and a webserver From left to right, you have: Webserver - Router1 - Router2 - Router3 Router1 and Router2 can succesfully ping WebServer. Router3 cannot. Router2 has a default gateway set, to send all not-recognized data through its serial interface to Router1. Like this: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial 0/0/1 Serial 0/0/1 being the connection to Router1 Router2 and Router3 have OSPF configured. From their "show run": Router2: router ospf 1 log-adjacency-changes passive-interface Serial0/0/1 network 10.1.1.0 0.0.0.3 area 0 default-information originate ! Router3: router ospf 1 log-adjacency-changes network 10.1.1.0 0.0.0.3 area 0 passive-interface FastEthernet0/0 ! I was under the assumption that setting default-information originate on Router2 would give Router3 the needed information. What's going wrong here? The interfaces are up. Ip addresses are with mask-range, clock rate is set at correct end. I don't know what else to check.

  I'm not too familiar with VMs and the like so this may not even be possible. Here is what I have: A real, full install of Windows 7 on hard drive A. A real, full install of Ubuntu 10.04 on hard drive B. Grub allowing me to select what I want to launch when I start up my computer. It would be Amazing if I could do one of two things. Within Windows 7, launch my real install of ubuntu as if it were a VM. That means i would get all the installed software, all of the files, and all of the settings. Launch a VM copy of ubuntu 10.04 but some how make it use all of the installed software and settings from my real copy. Thanks!

• Cache updates when migrating DNS from one provider to another

  This may be a Windows DNS specific question or a general DNS best practice question - I'm not sure! We migrated our 3rd party DNS provision from provider A to provider B. I noticed that our internal recursive windows DNS servers still had NS records cached for our domains pointing to provider A's servers, even though I changed the nameservers with our registrar several days ago, and even though selecting the properties of the cached records showed a TTL of 1 day. After 24 hours when the NS records in this cache have expired, will the DNS server go back to the TLD server for an update on the authority, or will it go by preference to dns1.providera.com since that is what it has cached? In this case I arranged to leave Provider A's servers up for a week to allow changes to propagate, so dns1.providera.com is still active and would still provide NS and SOA records that said that dns1.providera.com. was in charge of this domain. Given this fact, would the Windows DNS server ever go back to the TLD and pick up the authority changes, or would it just assume all was well and renew timestamps on its cached NS records? I wonder what would be the best approach to ensuring that caches pick this up. Should I:- (1) Leave Provider A's servers in place and active and wait for caches to catch up ... basically what we're doing now which seems to have issues - perhaps specifically for Windows servers, or perhaps more widely. (2) Leave Provider A's servers in place but change the NS and/or SOA information they provide to tell caches that new servers are in charge. (3) Remove Provider A's servers after 2*TTL to force remaining caches to update. The issue with (2) is that on Provider A's system I can't seem to change the NS or SOA information to anything other than their servers. The issue with (3) is that I'm not sure how a DNS server would behave in this case. When it couldn't reach the cached name servers, would it flush its cache and try a full recursive lookup, or would it just return an error, forcing the user to clear the cache manually? • Fix/Bypass "Cannot connect to the real website-blocked" error in Google Chrome with OpenDNS blocking

  I have a large problem with Chrome in my organisation. I use DNS to manage web site blocking, for sites which are not appropriate and are potentially a risk to the organisation where I do this. I only want to use Chrome over the network, as Internet Explorer has compatibility problems with some sites that we use (We cannot change this either or use different sites). Therefore using internet explorer is not a solution. I do not want to install a different browser, for multiple reasons. Mainly because of the difficulty of rewriting the customised add-ons that we use. However, recently, I have had lots of problems with Chrome SSL Errors. I cannot use my custom OpenDNS block pages, which uses the contact form to request an unblocking. Chrome often blocks OpenDNS for sites (a good example is Facebook) that request HTTPS. Some sites like https://internetbadguys.com (OpenDNS example) This means that chrome refuses to load the blocking page, explaining that the site is blocked. Instead they often call IT support, but they want a solution, as they are sick of getting lots of SSL errors. I have tried looking into ways to turning this off. I have tried: Typing "proceed". That didn't work. Typing "proceed", pressing enter. Didn't work I cannot find phishing and anti-malware any more in Chrome, from the internet guides. Not using HTTPS. However there is an automatic redirect to HTTPS on most sites. Therefore the error keeps coming up. Checking my clocks. They were correct. Does anyone have an idea on how to disabling, bypassing or working around this "feature"? EDIT: This is an example what I am talking about - I found that on google images. I do not block google. EDIT 2: My clocks are correct. I cannot stop using OpenDNS either. EDIT 3: My question is: How do I stop chrome from refusing to load pages that are blocked by OpenDNS, where the server has explicitly requested HTTPS.

• viable part-time career in IT/programming?

  Hi, I'd like to ask for some career advice from you people. Is there a viable job/career that can be done in programming/IT for the long term? Right now, I am thinking about website (PHP?) developer path. My background: I have a degree in computer science and have been a programmer/system analyst for almost 10 years. Lately I took a big break from programming and studied for a B.arch. degree (yes architecture), only to discover that architecture offers zero (0) jobs where I'm from, for 3 years already (and no, I am not going to move and the grass in not greener in other places). I have never been particularly interested in programming, in fact I was bored by it. But I was always quite good at both programming and system analysis, and very valued by practically all my employers. On the other hand, I have never been valued or offered a good job in any other field (although I can do many things, like design, architecture, translations, documentation, teaching, etc etc.) I guess the human component has been always more important for me in programming jobs - I value all the good people I worked with, but not projects. However, I have about zero skills or desire to be a project manager. I also have close to zero skills for selling myself. I like it best when I can do "my thing", have my niche, have an ownership of some project. Right now my career perspective is to do part time programming and to part time teach yoga. I have already started the yoga teaching part. Do you think that part time programming is viable? And what niche works best for that? I have considered web development, QA, or software development in a company like I did before. However, my fear is that when you do programming part-time, you get the most boring coding work, only to see your colleagues move to more interesting projects and up their respective career ladders. I also fear that part-timers are not especially needed either. And, since I don't share much enthusiasm at programming, I'd rather not be around young programmers boiling with geeky enthusiasm about coding, but rather QA mindset with people from different backgrounds and life paths might work better for me.   Cool little trick to determine which sql query which is taking a long time to execute, first while offending query is running from another machine do EXEC sp_who2 Locate the SPID responsible via Login, DBName and ProgramName columns, then do DBCC INPUTBUFFER (<SPID>) The offending query will be in the EventInfo column.  This is a great little time saver for me, before I found out about this I used to split my concatenated query script in to multiple sql files until I located the problem query
