• Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

  System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

  I'm a programmer by trade, "server administrator" by company necessity. We're looking at dumping the old painful "update site by FTP upload" style of deployment. Having the webserver check out the latest code base from version control into a folder and having a "current" symlink point to the latest checkout (allowing for easily stepping back to an older version by changing the symlink) seems to be the way we want to go. But I have a question: what's a good practice for dealing with user-uploaded content? This stuff isn't in version control. I have a couple of ideas for dealing with this, but what is the smart, accepted practice?

  I am running my own webserver on a 384MB VPS from Slicehost to serve two Ruby on Rails applications on separate Virtual Hosts. I am running Phusion Passenger with Apache2.   i have TrueCrypt partition, when i insert it in OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. is there a way to prevent os x from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] by the way, as Truecrypt suggested while i'm in Windows, i must make partitions so the os won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. i think OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker

• HP DL380 G5 Predictive Drive Failure on a new drive

  Consolidated Error Report: Controller: Smart Array P400 in slot 3 Device: Physical Drive 1I:1:1 Message: Predictive failure. We have an HP DL380 G5 server with two 72GB 15k SAS drives configured in RAID1. A couple weeks ago, the server reported a drive failure on Drive 1. We replaced the drive with a brand new HDD -- same spares number. A few days ago, the server started reporting a predictive drive failure on the new drive, in the same bay. Is it likely the new drive is bad... or more likely we have a bay failure problem? This is a production server, so any advice would be appreciated. I have another spare drive, so I can hot swap it if this is a fluke and new drive is just bad. THANKS! CharlieJ

  I'm having problems with my Dell notebook's Wi-Fi, it can't see some of the available access points, despite they are close and I used to be connected to them yesterday. Other notebooks and my phone can see them. I believe it's a driver issue, since after installing system I haven't downloaded any network drivers.   I work on a project for which I use an Ubuntu server vm on an Ubuntu host. The VM runs all the services / webapps through haproxy and nginx and serves it on the domain (xyz.com). I manually modify my resolv.conf to use the VMs IP address as the nameserver and I can run my app on the host browser. The problem is I am modifying an auto-generated file (resolv.conf) and I need to do it each time.   We occasionally connect my wife's laptop, which runs Vista, to our TV. Whenever we do this we have to manually switch the default audio output to "digital output" for the sound to go through the HDMI connection, and we also have to restart any apps that we want to send sound to the TV. We then have to perform a similar process when disconnecting. Is there any way to just have this be automatic? It seems absurd to have to do so much manual fiddling when a 40 year old transistor radio is "smart" enough to turn off the speakers and send sound to the headphones when headphones are plugged in. In case it helps, the name "RealTek" shows up in the sound card settings dialog.

• perfmon reporting higher IOPs than possible?

  We created a monitoring report for IOPs on performance counters using Disk reads/sec and Disk writes/sec on four servers (physical boxes, no virtualization) that have 4x 15k 146GB SAS drives in RAID10 per server, set to check and record data every 1 second, and logged for 24 hours before stopping reports. These are the results we got: Server1 Maximum disk reads/sec: 4249.437 Maximum disk writes/sec: 4178.946 Server2 Maximum disk reads/sec: 2550.140 Maximum disk writes/sec: 5177.821 Server3 Maximum disk reads/sec: 1903.300 Maximum disk writes/sec: 5299.036 Server4 Maximum disk reads/sec: 8453.572 Maximum disk writes/sec: 11584.653 The average disk reads and writes per second were generally low. I.e. for one particular server it was like average 33 writes/sec, but when monitoring in real-time it would often spike up to several hundreds and also sometimes into the thousands. Could someone explain to me why these numbers are significantly higher than theoretical calculations assuming each drive can do 180 IOPs? Additional details (RAID card): HP Smart Array P410i, Total cache size of 1GB, Write cache is disabled, Array accelerator cache ratio is 25% read and 75% write

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • File corruption when copying different file on raid 1

  I have a RAID 1 configuration of 2 1TB drives on a Fedora 12 box. Most of what is stored there are video files that are numerical labeled. The problem I'm having is that I had one of the video files get corrupted. I copied a replacement from a backup and replaced the bad file and now it works fine. However, after doing this the next numbered file goes from 350MB to 200KB and all but about .5 second of video disappears. If I then replace that file it happens to the next one down the line. Ex: Replace corrupt file 1.avi and file 2.avi shrinks to 200KB. Replace now corrupted 2.avi and it works but 3.avi gets screwed up. I have run SMART tests on the drives and they report fine. Does anyone have any tests I can run to try to figure out what is going on? EDIT: It is a two disk software RAID 1 with an ext4 filesystem

• machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

  i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

  Hello, I have two domain's set up on my server. Domain 1 is configured with google apps so that mail.domain1.com goes to google's mail. However, I would like domain1.com to redirect to domain2.com. Currently in my nginx.conf file I had server { listen 80; server_name domain2.com .domain1.com; rewrite ^/(.*) http://domain2.com permanent; root /home/demo/apps/cjl/public; passenger_enabled on; rails_spawn_method smart; } When I did this Firefox popped up a "Redirect not configured correctly" error and said that it thought that the redirect would create a never ending loop. I'm wondering how to set this up and any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

• ASUS EeePC 1001PX, hard disk clicking in Ubuntu Maverick

  I just received my new Asus EeePC 1001px netbook. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it, I've noticed that my hard drive is making a clicking noise. Now this is not a loud clicking noise nor it's constant (only sounds occasionally and when hard disk is not writing or reading anything). Another strange thing is, this only happens when netbook is using battery power, the moment I plug in AC power clicking stops. Additionally I noticed that when I go into BIOS I can hear the click only once, same thing happens if I boot Ubuntu from USB. That led me to believe the problem is within operating system. I did all the surface scans and SMART tests and everything seems to be fine. Now noise sounds like heads are trying to "park" themselves so I tried disabling "spin down" option in Power Management but it didn't help. Any idea?

  Possible Duplicate: Clicks or ticks every minute when HDD is idle My HDD is a My passport... It's 2 weeks old. I hear this tick or click followed by another one about 8-9 secs later, and they repeat every minute almost exactly... They usually happen and the LED light blinking.. It's not like the other clicks you hear that indicate any inevitable HDD failure, it's much lower in volume. I don't know what that is, however it's different than the rest of the HDD usual sounds...It's close to the sound of the mouse click. It sometimes also happens when I access a file on the drive mostly after being idle for a while, sometimes randomly not really sure... The drive though is working well, the SMART report comes out OK and without warning, and disk management shows it healthy... What could be the cause of this??

• How can I shut down all my Virtual Machines when my UPS kicks in?

  I have a Dell T610 running ESXi4, an APC Smart UPS 1000VA and a local "console" machine running Vista and the vSphere 4 Essentials pack. A dedicated management network is in place between the T610 and the Vista machine. We have 4 VMs: SBS 2003, Server 2003 running Terminal Services, and two XP Machines. Ideally, when the UPS is forced to use battery power [for a set number minutes], I would like to gracefully shutdown all the VMs, then the ESXi, then the console machine. The latter two are not strictly a priority, but the VMs within ESXi are. Google provided lots of deprecated scripts that used to work on ESXi 3.x or similar, however I am unable to find what they were deprecated by. What do I need to be able to do this? I have Powerchute Express as supplied with the UPS, but would be willing to pay for software if required.

• Solid Edge ST6 - 2D Modeling: dimensions

  I'm currently making some 2D drawings in Solid Edge ST6. I have several circles which I need to change so that they have an equal diameter and equal space between both circles, etc... Currently my drawing looks a bit messy with all the dimensions that I use: I use the Smart Dimension tool and the Distance Between tool but I have no clue to make my drawing more readable by adding less dimensions. Is there a way to copy/paste dimensions or let a circle follow the dimensions of one other circle? I hope you understand the question.   I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

  I've ordered a new hard drive to replace a bad one in a Dell Power Edge R515. The manual covers obvious topics regarding physical replacing of hard drives, but I've never done this before on a production server where RAID is involved. I've heard people talk about this topic, and I've heard that some servers have RAID controllers that are smart enough to allow you to just put in the new drive (hot swap), and then the server will know automatically how to rebuild that drive to be what the old one was to the system. Where do I find the proper procedure for replacing a failed hard drive on a live production Dell Power Edge R515? Can someone with experience tell me how easy or hard this usually is?

• How can I troubleshoot SSD disconnection problems on Windows 7?

  I have a small SSD (Transcend StoreJet TS256GESD200K) which I am using on several computers. The drive is formatted with NTFS and recently I started noticing disconnects. Normally one probably wouldn't notice (you don't even get the notification sound in Windows when it disconnects), but since I use USBDLM and run a VM from that SSD, I get to see this first-hand. How could I best figure out whether the problem is the hardware (SSD, USB socket, USB cable or something in the PC) or software? In short: how can I locate the source of the disruption so that I can work on removing the problem? Side-note: SMART status for the SSD is clean.

• Disable RAID Controller

  I have some decent HP Proliants server that come with "HP Smart Array P410i Controller" enabled, I am using these boxes to set up a Hadoop cluster and I know, RAID is for sure a no-no for Hadoop since the application itself will take care of data redundancy and extra intelligence provided by RAID won't be helpful and might turn down the performance. I tried to disable the devices at the BIOS and the box cannot even access the disk afterwards. So I am assuming the controller is sitting between disks and mother board, and we have to turn it on and configure it to "level0" or something like that. I am wondering what should I do to "disable" the RAID functionality so it will fit into the Hadoop environment.
