  Hi. I'm writing an application to analyse a MySQL database, and I need to execute several DMLs simmultaneously; for example: // In ResultSet rsA: Select * from A; rsA.beforeFirst(); while (rsA.next()) { id = rsA.getInt("id"); // Retrieve data from table B: Select * from B where B.Id=" + id; // Crunch some numbers using the data from B // Close resultset B } I'm declaring an array of data objects, each with its own Connection to the database, which in turn calls several methods for the data analysis. The problem is all threads use the same connection, thus all tasks throw exceptios: "Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction" I believe there is a way to write the code in such a way that any given object has its own connection and executes the required tasks independent from any other object. For example: DataObject dataObject[0] = new DataObject(id[0]); DataObject dataObject[1] = new DataObject(id[1]); DataObject dataObject[2] = new DataObject(id[2]); ... DataObject dataObject[N] = new DataObject(id[N]); // The 'DataObject' class has its own connection to the database, // so each instance of the object should use its own connection. // It also has a "run" method, which contains all the tasks required.   I am trying to create a new Notice Alert using PHP and Javascript. Suppose that a 100 users are currently logged into to the Online Notice Board Application and any One user posts a new notice. I want an immediate alert signal on all the users screen. I know, that the simplest way of doing it is to constantly Ping the server but I don't want to do it as it will slow down the server. Moreover, I am on a shared host. So I don't have access to any Socket Port. That means, I cannot establish any direct Socket Communication Channel from the Server to the User Machine. Can any one suggest me some other solution to this kind of problems???

• How do you handle the tension between refactoring and the need for merging?

  Hi, Our policy when delivering a new version is to create a branch in our VCS and handle it to our QA team. When the latter gives the green light, we tag and release our product. The branch is kept to receive (only) bug fixes so that we can create technical releases. Those bug fixes are subsequently merged on the trunk. During this time, the trunk sees the main development work, and is potentially subject to refactoring changes. The issue is that there is a tension between the need to have a stable trunk (so that the merge of bug fixes succeed -- it usually can't if the code has been e.g. extracted to another method, or moved to another class) and the need to refactor it when introducing new features. The policy in our place is to not do any refactoring before enough time has passed and the branch is stable enough. When this is the case, one can start doing refactoring changes on the trunk, and bug-fixes are to be manually committed on both the trunk and the branch. But this means that developpers must wait quite some time before committing on the trunk any refactoring change, because this could break the subsequent merge from the branch to the trunk. And having to manually port bugs from the branch to the trunk is painful. It seems to me that this hampers development... How do you handle this tension? Thanks.

  +  = Simple and safe Data connections.   This guide is for someone wanting to use the latest ODP.NET quickly without reading the official documentation. This guide will get you up and running in about 15 minutes. I have reviewed my referral link to my simple Setting up ODP.net with Win7 x64 and noticed most people were searching for one of the following terms: “how to use odp.net with vs” “setup connection odp.net” “query db using odp and vs” While my article provided links and a sample tnsnames.ora file, it really didn’t tell you how to use it. I’m hoping that this brief tutorial will help. So before we get started, you will need the following: Download the following: www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/dotnet/utilsoft.html from oracle and install it. It is the first one on the page. Visual Studio 2008 or 2010. It should be noted that The System.Data.OracleClient namespace is the OLD .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle. It should not be used anymore as it has been depreciated. The latest version which is what we are using is Oracle.DataAccess.Client. First things first, Add a reference to the Oracle.DataAccess.Client after you install ODP.NET   Copy and paste the following C# code into your project and replace the relevant info including the query string and you should be able to return data.   I wonder if someone could help me setup a number of NSLog statements so they print to console when executing in "Debug Mode" but don't print in "Release Mode". I understand I need to add something like DEBUG = 1 to the debug config in Xcode but I can't find where. Also how do I utilise this in my code? • release does not free up memory in low-memory condidtion

  I am trying to follow the Apple's recommendation to handle low-memory warnings (found in Session 416 of WWDC 2009 videos) by freeing up resources used by freeing up my dataController object (referenced in my app delegate) that contains a large number of strings for read from a plist: - (void)applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning:(UIApplication *)application { [_dataController release]; _dataController = nil; NSLog([NSString stringWithFormat:@"applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning bottom... retain count:%i", [_dataController retainCount]]); } But when I run ObjectAlloc within Instruments and simulate a Low-Memory Condition, I don't see a decrease in the memory used by my app even though I see the NSLog statements written out and the retain count is zero for the object. I do pass references to the app delegate around to some of the view controllers. But the code above releases the reference to the _dataController object (containing the plist data) so I would expect the memory to be freed. Any help would be appreciated.

  I am running TeamCity on a virtual machine. I have installed the new Visual Studio 2010 release yesterday and converted my VS 2008 projects. I also have installed .NET Framework 4 on my virtual machine. Before yesterday all my projects were building succesfully on the CI server but since I installed VS 2010 I get the following error message : error MSB5014: File format version is not recognized. MSBuild can only read solution files between versions 7.0 and 9.0, inclusive. I did change my config on Team City to take into account the new .NET 4 framework : Build Runner : MSBuild Build File Path : CFT.msbuild MSBuild version : Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 MSBuild ToolsVersion : 4.0 Run Platform : x86 I think it has something to do with the fact that now MSBuild must refer to .NET 4 framwork but it seems that it keeps refering to 2.0.

AFAIK, the copyright owner can handle the entire source and licencing it, I did it; and probably the licence owner could cut&paste its own code, change its licence and use for other projects, isn't? But an GPL'ed library cannot be linked with a proprietary software, right? But software could be double-licenced, as MySQL does. So the question is: what should I do to allow the distribution of my GPL'ed library with a proprietary software, being the copyright owner?

• Weird behavior of std::vector

  I have a class like this: class OBJ{...}; class A { public: vector<OBJ> v; A(int SZ){v.clear(); v.reserve(SZ);} }; A *a = new A(123); OBJ something; a->v.push_back(something); This is a simplified version of my code. The problem is in debug mode it works perfect. But in release mode it crashes at "push_back" line. (with all optimization flags OFF) I debugged it in release mode and the problem is in the constructor of A. the size of the vector is something really big with dummy values and when I clear it, it doesn't change... • Debugging a release version of a DLL (with PDB file)

  If I have a DLL (that was built in release-mode) and the corresponding PDB file, is it possible to debug (step-into) classes/methods contained in that DLL? If so, what are the required steps/configuration (e.g. where to put the PDB file)? Edit: If have the PDB file in the same place as the DLL (in the bin/debug directory of a simple console test application). I can see that the symbols for the DLL are loaded (in the Output window and also in the Modules window), but still I cannot step into the methods of that DLL. Could this be the result of compiler optimizations (as described by Michael in his answer)?

  Why doesn't Microsoft release a 'proper' AJAX grid for ASP.Net either as part of Visual Studio or the AJAX control toolkit? Has there been any discussion that anyone is aware of regarding this issue? Also does anyone have any open source suggestions for 'proper' AJAX gridviews?   Hey guys, We have an Ivy release procedure where resolve our dependancies using Ivy pre-tagging which means that we can pull in changes for releases by other members of the team that we are not expecting We want to generate reports and track changes to dependancies between releases but there doesn't seem to be an easy way of doing this without a significant effort. We also want to generate a JIRA list of all changes not only in the main project but in dependancies that we own. This is an extension of the problem above. Otherwise we simply don't know what we are releasing - any ideas?!

  In my root view controller, in my didReceiveMemoryWarning method, I go through a couple data structures (which I keep in a global singleton called DataManager), and ditch the heaviest things I've got--one or maybe two images associated with possibly twenty or thirty or more data records. Right now I'm going through and setting those to nil. I'm also setting myself a boolean flag so that various view controllers that need this data can easily know to reload. Thusly: DataManager *data = [DataManager sharedDataManager]; for (Event *event in data.eventList) { event.image = nil; event.thumbnail = nil; } for (WondrMark *mark in data.wondrMarks) { mark.image = nil; } [DataManager sharedDataManager].cleanedMemory = YES; Today I'm thinking, though... and I'm not actually sure all that allocated memory is really being freed when I do that. Should I instead release those images and maybe hit them with a new alloc and init when I need them again later?

In a UITableViewController, in the ViewDiDLoad I init them, and in the cellForRowAtIndexPath I add them to the cell with [cell.contentView addSubview:customTextField]; Each cell has a different customTextField as all of them are very different. Where I should call the [customTextField release] ? After I add them to the cell view ? If for example I call [self.tableView reloadData] my customTextField are going to be added again to the cell, so maybe I should change my approach in doing this ? thanks for the orientation ... regards, r.

  Note: I'm new to version numbering. Please excuse my ignorance. I have a project where an attempted major release (Version B) was abandoned then later re-attempted and release (Version C). Each version has major changes from the previous version that I wouldn't consider an minor update. Little to nothing of Version B made it into Version C. Version A (1.0) Developed, released, updated, etc. Version B (???) Developed, suspended, abandoned. Version C (2.0) Developed, released, updated, etc. I feel like I should have version them like so, but worried about confusion of the missing version: Version A (1.0) Version B (2.0) Version C (3.0)

• TeamCity Mercurial, How to handle tags and releases

  Hi First off, i'm new to Teamcity comming from CC. I have a server up and running and building my projects, so far so good :). My problem is this: Whenever I make a Mercurial Tag, I would like TeamCity to react in a special way, so that the resulting binaries/artifacts from the Tag build, are made avaliable for download (automatic release when tagging). In short can I do automated release so that when I create a Tag AND it builds successfully then the result is copied to some location X, but ONLY when I Tag. Im pretty sure that this can be done, but when I read the posts around the net and read the documentation, I tend to get a little confused about artifacts/build scripts/publishing and how to do it. Can anyone give me some hints about where/how to start or guide me to a location with a tutorial/example of how to do this? I want it soooooo bad :-D. Kind regards
