  Why bother nominating a peer, yourself or your company for a Duke's Choice Award? I asked Duke's Choice Award winner Fabiane Nardon, whose team won in 2005 for the Healthcare Information System they created for the Brazilian government, what it was like winning the award and if it had any impact on her career. Here's what she told me: 1) What was it like to win a Duke's Choice Award? For me it was like winning an Oscar or a Grammy :-) I think that for a Java developer, a Duke's Choice Award is probably the highest award you can get, so it was really an honor. We had an amazing team working on that project and the team really deserved it. We were all very happy when we got that email with the announcement. That moment was one of the most important moments of my career. 2) What benefits have you gotten from being a "Duke's Choice Award Winner?" I think the most important benefit you get from winning a Duke is the fact that you become known by your peers. This opens many doors, since you are approached by more people, get invitations to speak in more conferences, you meet people with the same technical interests you have and so on. I certainly benefited a lot from it. We were lucky that in 2005, when we got our award, the winners were featured in the JavaOne keynote, with short documentaries produced about each one. So, we could be on the stage and talk a little about the project. We got lots of press at the time. We see  today's winners benefiting a lot from the press coverage. 3) How is the the Brazilian Healthcare Information System project doing today? Still running and getting new features every year. I'm not involved on the project anymore, but there are good people taking care of it. We opened the code since the beginning, so different cities could use and add features to it. There are many new developers working on that code base right now and I hope they can take the whole system to a new level. 4) What are you up to these days? I worked in the healthcare field for many years and a few years ago I decided that it was time to move on and take the experience I got designing large scale and mission critical systems to other fields. Since then I have been working with high access internet applications. I also co-founded ToolsCloud, a company that provides a development environment with open source tools in the cloud. We just launched ToolsCloud in USA, so other companies can get the same bundle of tools, hassle free, that several companies are successfully using in Brazil. Besides that, right now I'm personally working on the coolest project I ever worked on. It combines several technical challenges with a good dose of social impact. We should launch it in the second semester and I should keep it as a secret for now. Hopefully it will be useful to many people and disruptive enough to maybe get us a new Duke's Choice Award. Recently, I've encountered a problem with collision between sprites. What I want to achieve is a collision detection that is controlled by the update function without having to change much of the coding. Probably several lines placed in the update() function. • Reading graph inputs for a programming puzzle and then solving it

  I just took a programming competition question and I absolutely bombed it. I had trouble right at the beginning itself from reading the input set. The question was basically a variant of this puzzle http://codercharts.com/puzzle/evacuation-plan but also had an hour component in the first line(say 3 hours after start of evacuation). It reads like this This puzzle is a tribute to all the people who suffered from the earthquake in Japan. The goal of this puzzle is, given a network of road and locations, to determine the maximum number of people that can be evacuated. The people must be evacuated from evacuation points to rescue points. The list of road and the number of people they can carry per hour is provided. Input Specifications Your program must accept one and only one command line argument: the input file. The input file is formatted as follows: the first line contains 4 integers n r s t n is the number of locations (each location is given by a number from 0 to n-1) r is the number of roads s is the number of locations to be evacuated from (evacuation points) t is the number of locations where people must be evacuated to (rescue points) the second line contains s integers giving the locations of the evacuation points the third line contains t integers giving the locations of the rescue points the r following lines contain to the road definitions. Each road is defined by 3 integers l1 l2 width where l1 and l2 are the locations connected by the road (roads are one-way) and width is the number of people per hour that can fit on the road Now look at the sample input set 5 5 1 2 3 0 3 4 0 1 10 0 2 5 1 2 4 1 3 5 2 4 10 The 3 in the first line is the additional component and is defined as the number of hours since the resuce has started which is 3 in this case. Now my solution was to use Dijisktras algorithm to find the shortest path between each of the rescue and evac nodes. Now my problem started with how to read the input set. I read the first line in python and stored the values in variables. But then I did not know how to store the values of the distance between the nodes and what DS to use and how to input it to say a standard implementation of dijikstras algorithm. So my question is two fold 1.) How do I take the input of such problems? - I have faced this problem in quite a few competitions recently and I hope I can get a simple code snippet or an explanation in java or python to read the data input set in such a way that I can input it as a graph to graph algorithms like dijikstra and floyd/warshall. Also a solution to the above problem would also help. 2.) How to solve this puzzle? My algorithm was: Find shortest path between evac points (in the above example it is 14 from 0 to 3) Multiply it by number of hours to get maximal number of saves Also the answer given for the variant for the input set was 24 which I dont understand. Can someone explain that also. UPDATE: I get how the answer is 14 in the given problem link - it seems to be just the shortest path between node 0 and 3. But with the 3 hour component how is the answer 24 UPDATE I get how it is 24 - its a complete graph traversal at every hour and this is how I solve it Hour 1 Node 0 to Node 1 - 10 people Node 0 to Node 2- 5 people TotalRescueCount=0 Node 1=10 Node 2= 5 Hour 2 Node 1 to Node 3 = 5(Rescued) Node 2 to Node 4 = 5(Rescued) Node 0 to Node 1 = 10 Node 0 to Node 2 = 5 Node 1 to Node 2 = 4 TotalRescueCount = 10 Node 1 = 10 Node 2= 5+4 = 9 Hour 3 Node 1 to Node 3 = 5(Rescued) Node 2 to Node 4 = 5+4 = 9(Rescued) TotalRescueCount = 9+5+10 = 24 It hard enough for this case , for multiple evac and rescue points how in the world would I write a pgm for this ?

• Suggestions for doing async I/O with Task Parallel Library

  I have some high performance file transfer code which I wrote in C# using the Async Programming Model (APM) idiom (eg, BeginRead/EndRead). This code reads a file from a local disk and writes it to a socket. For best performance on modern hardware, it's important to keep more than one outstanding I/O operation in flight whenever possible. Thus, I post several BeginRead operations on the file, then when one completes, I call a BeginSend on the socket, and when that completes I do another BeginRead on the file. The details are a bit more complicated than that but at the high level that's the idea. I've got the APM-based code working, but it's very hard to follow and probably has subtle concurrency bugs. I'd love to use TPL for this instead. I figured Task.Factory.FromAsync would just about do it, but there's a catch. All of the I/O samples I've seen (most particularly the StreamExtensions class in the Parallel Extensions Extras) assume one read followed by one write. This won't perform the way I need. I can't use something simple like Parallel.ForEach or the Extras extension Task.Factory.Iterate because the async I/O tasks don't spend much time on a worker thread, so Parallel just starts up another task, resulting in potentially dozens or hundreds of pending I/O operations; way too much! You can work around that by Waiting on your tasks, but that causes creation of an event handle (a kernel object), and a blocking wait on a task wait handle, which ties up a worker thread. My APM-based implementation avoids both of those things. I've been playing around with different ways to keep multiple read/write operations in flight, and I've managed to do so using continuations that call a method that creates another task, but it feels awkward, and definitely doesn't feel like idiomatic TPL. Has anyone else grappled with an issue like this with the TPL? Any suggestions?

  After reading this question, i saw the answer by Naveen containing a link to this page, which basically says, that casting from Derived** to Base** is forbidden since could change a pointer to an pointer to a Derived1 object point to a pointer to a Derived2 object (like: *derived1PtrPtr=derived2Ptr). OK, i understand this is evil ... But when casting Derived** to Base*const* this is not even possible, so whats the reason that this is not allowed anyway ?

• Need to make a scheduled task run as another user but keep the current user’s environment

  I need to backup users .pst files. The current method I am trying is making a shadow copy using Diskshadow. My script works great all but Diskshadow needs to be ran as administrator but also needs to retain the logged-on user's environment variables; specifically, the %USERNAME% and %HOMESHARE% variables so the right user’s files get copied up to the right network location. I have for the most part got this to work), but there’s no straightforward (or secure, at least) way to pass the password. If I set up a scheduled task to run the script as a domain user with local admin privs, the environment variables get lost. I need to run this script automagically so that there should be no user interaction. If I could figure out how to make a scheduled task run as another user but keep the current user’s environment, I think this would work, but I’ve been beating my head against that for a while now, without any luck.

• Looking for a good free or cheap task tracking system

  I've finally decided that pen and paper/whiteboards are not up to the job as my workload increases so I'm looking for a good task tracking system. I need something that can track tasks in categories (projects) and allow me to assign priority to each task. I've tried iTeamWork which requires projects to have an end time which is no good for me as at least one of my projects is ongoing. I also tried Teamly which was required tasks to be set to a specific day which is no good as tasks sometimes take more than a day and I would like them organised by priority rather than specific days. Preferably looking for something hosted but I'm happy to install on our servers if it supports PHP/MySQL. Oh, and an iPhone client would be the icing on the cake! Can anyone recommend anything?

• Using an SSD with no AHCI [ICH7 base] - Windows 7 hangs frequently

  I have a Shuttle Intel G31 + ICH7 (base -- not M/R etc) system. I just bought an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb [VTX3-25SAT3-120G] which includes the Sandforce 2218 firmware. The ICH7 does not support AHCI. I understand that this can be a problem. What I don't understand, is if it's necessary to have the proper performance of this drive. I know that without AHCI I may get a limited read/write speed -- this is fine. What my concern is, is the constant freezing/hangs I'm getting with Windows 7 on any disk activity. The 'Highest Active Time' flip-flops from 0 to 100% every minute or so regardless of large or small files. EDIT: The threads/processes with the highest response time is the kernel. I've been reading about other people with Shuttle SG31G2s, and they seem to be using SSDs no problem. Is this the controller's fault? The fact that I do not have AHCI enabled? It makes sense to me that if this SSD requires AHCI features that it would cause Windows to hang, but I would like to fully determine my situation before returning things/reformatting. To initially have my drive recognise the SSD at all, I had to change the BIOS option to Force Gen II instead of Auto for the SATA controller. I then installed Windows with no problem. There were no errors in the event log related to disk usage, but watching the perfmon I could see the highest active time and the processes (usually pagefile.sys being written to, or chrome/firefox caching) which was correlated to the hanging. So now what I need answered is: should I be returning this SSD and getting one with a different controller, or returning the SSD all-together as it will never work out and I will continue to get these hangs. Posts I've read: Windows 7 New SSD SATA AHCI? -- suggests to use AHCI http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2189868 -- Sandforce issues Windows 7 freezes with SSD -- and attached posts Why does my Windows 7 PC / SSD drive keep freezing? -- this is not the controller I have, but still a related issue. Windows 7 hangs after longer inactivity of user -- also tried messing with power settings with no luck. It was already set to 'Never' for turning off HDDs.

• IE9 Kiosk Mode scheduled task opens behind taskbar

  I've set up a scheduled task in Windows 7 Pro to open up Internet Explorer 9 (x86 version) in kiosk mode. The scheduled task executes when a certain user logs in, and this user is logged in automatically when Windows starts. This is the command I'm using to start IE: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -k http://example.com So far so good - the computer boots up, the user gets logged in, and IE opens up in kiosk mode. The problem is that IE seems to open behind the taskbar - so the taskbar (start menu, pinned programs, etc.) appears at the bottom of the window, and the bottom of the IE window is visible through the taskbar (since the taskbar is translucent). Is there anything I can do, preferably without installing any third party programs (although I will go for that option if none other is available), to ensure that the IE9 kiosk window always opens in front of the taskbar?

• CentOS 6 - Make system aware of custom lib paths and missing base links

  I am trying to compile libmemcached (1.0.7) on CentOS6, and keep getting the following warning: ... checking for event.h... no configure: WARNING: Unable to find libevent ... I manually compiled libevent (2.0.19) and built it using the following configure line: OPTIONS="--prefix=/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent" Everything compiled and installed fine, but I couldn't figure out how to make the system aware that the lib files are in the custom /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/libdir. I stumbled upon an article and read that I can make the system aware of custom lib paths by adding a custom file to /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ directory: # /etc/ld.so.conf.d/customApp.conf /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib Then I issued the ldconfig command and was able to confirm that libevent was included by issuing this command: ldconfig -p | ack -i libevent Seeing that libevent was now included in the ldconfig output, I figured I would be able to compile libmemcached and satisfy the aforementioned warning. Unfortunately it did not. So I took another look at the ldconfig output and noticed this: libevent_pthreads-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_pthreads-2.0.so.5 libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5 libevent_extra-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_extra-2.0.so.5 libevent_core-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent_core-2.0.so.5 libevent-2.0.so.5 (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib/libevent-2.0.so.5 There are no references to the base links, for example, I would expect to see links to these (ls -la /usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib): libevent.so -> libevent-2.0.so.5.1.7 libevent_openssl.so -> libevent_openssl-2.0.so.5.1.7 libevent_core.so -> libevent_core-2.0.so.5.1.7 So either I am doing something wrong, or the system still does not know where to look to find libevent.so. -- Update #1 -- I wasn't able to get libmemcached to compile without the warning notice, even after trying to compile using the following configure command: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/_custom/app/libmemcached CFLAGS="-I/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/include" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/_custom/app/libevent/lib" I thought for sure this would work because I am directly passing the include and lib directories to the configure command. But it did not.

  A follow-up (sort of) to this question: in the Xcode build tab, I set my Base SDK to 3.1 but after uploading to the App Store, I see it being listed as requiring 2.2 or later. Why is that? Both Base SDK and Deployment Target are set to 3.1.

• taskmgr.exe - Wrong Volume

  The other day my girlfriend used my computer to use one of those additional resource CD's that come with text books. This particular CD worked by acting like what seemed like a web server that hosted a site that the student is supposed to use (cgi-bin, python scripts...the whole deal). Today, I opened task manager to shut down some rogue IE's and got the following in an error popup with the title taskmgr.exe - Wrong Volume and Cancel/Try Again/Continue buttons: The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume DosageCalc into drive D: (FYI: DosageCalc = nursing student) Clicking Cancel or Continue lets me continue to task manager. The CD hasn't been in the drive for days and I've used it since then with no problems. Where could task manager be holding onto this reference? My guess would be the registry somewhere...but I don't even know where to begin looking.

  I have a Maintenance Plan that is suppose to go through the BACKUP folder and remove all .bak older than 5 days. When I run the job, it gives me a success message but older .bak files are still present. I've tried the step at the following question: SQL Maintenance Cleanup Task 'Success' But not deleting files Result is column IsDamaged = 0 I've verified with the following question and this is not my issue: Maintenance Cleanup Task(s) running 'successfully' but not deleting back up files. I've also tried deleting the Job and Maintenance Plan and recreating, but to no avail. Any ideas?

Problems occur, when I use special characters, like german umlauts (Ö,Ä,Ü) in these parameters. In my java task they appear as ?-characters (using System.out.print). • Hadoop reduce task gets hung

  I set up a hadoop cluster with 4 nodes, When running a map-reduce task, the map task finishes quickly, while the reduce task hangs at 27% percent. I checked the log, it's that the reduce task fails to fetch map output from map nodes. The job tracker log of master shows messages like this: 2011-06-27 19:55:14,748 INFO org.apache.hadoop.mapred.JobTracker: Adding task (REDUCE) 'attempt_201106271953_0001_r_000000_0' to tip task_201106271953_0001_r_000000, for tracker 'tracker_web30.bbn.com.cn:localhost/127.0.0.1:56476' And the name node log of master shows messages like this: 2011-06-27 14:00:52,898 INFO org.apache.hadoop.ipc.Server: IPC Server handler 4 on 54310, call register(DatanodeRegistration(202.106.199.39:50010, storageID=DS-1989397900-202.106.199.39-50010-1308723051262, infoPort=50075, ipcPort=50020)) from 192.168.225.19:16129: error: java.io.IOException: verifyNodeRegistration: unknown datanode 202.106.199.3 9:50010 However, neither the "web30.bbn.com.cn" or 202.106.199.39, 202.106.199.3 is the slave node. I think such ip/domains appear because hadoop fails to resolve a node(first in the Intranet DNS server), then it goes to a higher-level DNS server, later to the top, still fails, then the "junk" ip/domains are returned. But I checked my config, it goes like this: /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 192.168.225.16 master 192.168.225.66 slave1 192.168.225.20 slave5 192.168.225.17 slave17 conf/core-site.xml: hadoop.tmp.dir /root/hadoop_tmp/hadoop_${user.name} fs.default.name hdfs://master:54310 io.sort.mb 1024 hdfs-site.xml: dfs.replication 3 masters: master slaves: master slave1 slave5 slave17 Also, all firewalls(iptables) are turned off, and ssh between each 2 nodes is ok. so I don't know where exact the error comes from. • Scheduled task username changed

  I posted this originally on stack overflow where I was told I should ask it here: Hi, I created a user on our exchange server, but later changed the username. Now, when I create a scheduled task for that user, and change it's settings (run only when logged on), the username is automatically changed back to the old username. What's causing this and how do I make sure the correct, new username is used for the task (otherwise it won't run), security settings are okay. I did already log in with a different user to delete the profile on the computer and tried again with this user to no avail. The OS is windows xp, the exchange server is on windows server 2003. • how to time out an ant task

  Without writing a custom ant task is there a way to use a timeout on a regular ant target? To give some background info ... we are using the delete task to remove all contents of a given directory. Sometimes this directory is massive with lots of generated folders and files. We wanted to have that task say timeout after 5 minutes. I could not find anything online anywhere ... any ideas?

• Cannot schedule task to run under domain user account other than current user

  On our Win 2008 machines I can't schedule tasks for domain users because the domain name does not resolve to network name but the AD dc name. The "network name" looks like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM and the "dc" / "name" would look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN. When selecting the domain user account the account qualifier will look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN\task.user. This results in an "invalid account" error. When however keeping the currently logged in user it will display ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM\current.user. Does this behaviour result from the presumable "illegal" domain name? Is there a workaround for this? update I could of course log in as the desired domain account and create the task but since this account is a account used for running services I want to avoid creating a user profile on the machine.
