  • Array on servers which receive several hundred GB of data a day

    - by Matthew
    This is hopefully a simple question. Right now we are deploying servers which will serve as data warehouses. I know with raid 5 the best practice is 6 disks per raid 5. However, our plan is to use RAID 10 (both for performance and safety). We have a total of 14 disks (16 actually, but two are being used for OS). Keeping in mind that performance is very much an issue, which is better - doing several raid 1's? Do one large raid 10? One large raid 10 had been our original plan, but I want to see if anyone has any opinions I haven't thought of. Please note: This system was designed for using Raid 1+0, so losing half of the raw storage capacity is not an issue. Sorry i hadn't mentioned that initially. The concern is more whether or not we want to use one large Raid 1+0 containing all 14 disks, or several smaller raid 1+0's and then stripe across them using LVM. I know the best practice for higher raid levels is to never use more than 6 disks in an array.

  • logrotate deletes all maillogs older than one day

    - by shadyabhi
    I see only two files maillog and maillog.1 in /var/log. grepping for maillog in logrotate.d directory gives three files that have a mention of maillog. syslog /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/maillog /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron { #/var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron { daily sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } syslog-ng /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/maillog /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron /var/log/kern.log /var/log/kern { sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } and maillog. /var/log/maillog { daily compress # rotate 365 rotate 14 sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } I am new to logrotate so may be I am missing something obvious. What can be the issue? The setup was already done when I started managing the server so I don't also know as do why do I have 3 mentions for maillog in logrotate.

  • Computer wakes up from hibernation at exctly 3:40am every day

    - by vascoFG
    I'm getting tired of waking up to my computer being turned on, and event log shows that it's waking up everyday at 3:40am and most times won't go back to sleep after the determined 30 minutes (maybe from being in the lock screen?). There are no devices armed for wake, activation timers are disabled and all wake options disabled in the BIOS and energy star 4.0c is enabled (was disabled before but no difference).

  • Python - multithreading / multiprocessing, very strange problem.

    - by orokusaki
    import uuid import time import multiprocessing def sleep_then_write(content): time.sleep(5) print(content) if __name__ == '__main__': for i in range(15): p = multiprocessing.Process(target=sleep_then_write, args=('Hello World',)) p.start() print('Ah, what a hard day of threading...') This script output the following: Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... AAh, what a hard day of threading.. h, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Ah, what a hard day of threading... Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Hello World Firstly, why the heck did it print the bottom statement sixteen times (one for each process) instead of just the one time? Second, notice the AAh, and h, about half way down; that was the real output. This makes me wary of using threads ever, now. (Windows XP, Python 2.6.4, Core 2 Duo)

  • Oracle Date Format Convert Hour-Minute to Interval and Disregard Year-Month-Day

    - by dlite922
    I need to compare an event's half-way midpoint between a start and stop time of day. Right now i'm converting the dates you see on the right, to HH:MM and the comparison works until midnight. the query says: WHERE half BETWEEN pStart and pStop. As you can see below, pStart and pStap have January 1st 2000 dates, this is because the year month day are not important to me... Valid Data: +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ | half | pStart | pStop | half2 | pStart2 | pStop2 | +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ | 19:00 | 19:00 | 23:00 | 2012-11-04 19:00:00 | 2000-01-01 19:00:00 | 2000-01-01 23:00:00 | | 20:00 | 19:00 | 23:00 | 2012-11-04 20:00:00 | 2000-01-01 19:00:00 | 2000-01-01 23:00:00 | | 21:00 | 19:00 | 23:00 | 2012-11-04 21:00:00 | 2000-01-01 19:00:00 | 2000-01-01 23:00:00 | | 23:00 | 20:00 | 23:00 | 2012-11-05 23:00:00 | 2000-01-01 20:00:00 | 2000-01-01 23:00:00 | +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ Now observe what happens when pStop is midnight or later... Valid Data that breaks it: +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ | half | pStart | pStop | half2 | pStart2 | pStop2 | +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ | 23:00 | 22:00 | 00:00 | 2012-11-04 23:00:00 | 2000-01-01 22:00:00 | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | | 23:30 | 23:00 | 02:00 | 2012-11-05 23:30:00 | 2000-01-01 23:00:00 | 2000-01-01 02:00:00 | +-------+--------+-------+---------------------+---------------------+---------------------+ Thus my where clause translates to: WHERE 19:00 BETWEEN 22:00 AND 00:00 ...which returns false and I miss those two correct rows above. Question: Is there a way to show those dates as integer interval so that saying half BETWEEN pStart and pStop are correct? I thought about adding 24 when pStop is less than pStart to make 00:00 into 24:00 but don't know an easy way to do that without long string concatenations and number conversions. This would solve the problem because pStart pStop difference will never be longer than 6 hours. Note: (The Query is much more complex. It has other irrelevant date calculations, but the result are show above. DATE_FORMAT(%H:%i) is applied to the first three columns and no formatting to the last three) Thanks for your help:

  • Need to get 3 record for database on current date using sqlite

    - by Umaid
    SELECT rowid, Day, Advice from MainCategory where ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now','-1 day')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now'))))) and ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now'))))) , ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now','+1 day')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now',+1 month))))); What if i make my Month column in Integer data type then it would be. SELECT rowid, Month, Day, Advice from MainCategory where ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now','-1 day')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now'))))) and ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now'))))) , ((Day = ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now','+1 day')) as Integer)))) and (Month = (strftime('%m',date('now',+1 month))))); Please note that I have over this scenerio when I am in middle of month but below query returns 2 records and 1 from begining from all 11 months as (feb is exclusive) then record will be 33 but i need three 3 records from the table and increment it on next button. Please write 3 querys one which return all three record on current date, next all 3 records must be incremented by 1 on every next button click finally all 3 records must be decremented by 1 on every previous button click keep last day and begining date on the month in minds else i have also achieved for middle of month. Running query but returns 33 records instead of 3. SELECT rowid,Month, Day, Advice from MainCategory where Day in ((cast(strftime('%d',date('now','-1 day')) as Integer)),(cast(strftime('%d',date('now')) as Integer)),(cast(strftime('%d',date('now','+1 day')) as Integer)));

  • Career day in kindergarten

    - by Péter Török
    I was invited to the kindergarten group of my elder daughter to talk and answer the kids' questions about my profession. There are 26 kids of age 4-6 in the group, plus 3 teachers who are fairly scared of anything related to programming and IT themselves, but bold enough to learn new tricks. I would have about 20-30 minutes, without projector or anything. They have an old computer though, which by its look may be a 486, and I am not even sure if it's functioning. My research turned up excellent earlier threads, with lots of good tips: How would you explain your job to a 5-year old? Career Day: how do I make “computer programmer” sound cool to 8 year olds? What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day? My situation is different from each of the above though: the latter ones are concerned with older children, while the first one is about talking to a single kid (or elder person)—a group of 20 is a whole different challenge. How can I teach the kids and their teachers about programming in a fun way?

  • Best practices for withstanding launch day traffic burst

    - by Sam McAfee
    We are working on a website for a client that (for once) is expected to get a fair amount of traffic on day one. There are press releases, people are blogging about it, etc. I am a little concerned that we're going to fall flat on our face on day one. What are the main things you would look at to ensure (in advance without real traffic data) that you can stay standing after a big launch. Details: This is a L/A/M/PHP stack, using an internally developed MVC framework. This is currently being launched on one server, with Apache and MySQL both on it, but we can break that up if need be. We are already installing memcached and doing as much PHP-level caching as we can think of. Some of the pages are rather query intensive, and we are using Smarty as our template engine. Keep in mind there is no time to change any of these major aspects--this is the just the setup. What sorts of things should we watch out for?

  • Querying calender events even if they do not have any for the day

    - by StealthRT
    Hey everyone, i am trying to figure out a way of query my mysql server so that even if a company does not have anything posted for the day the user clicks on their logo, it still adds them to the list. That sounds a little confusing so let me try to explain it another way. Say i have 3 company's in my database: Comp1 Comp2 Comp3 And Comp1 & Comp3 have something for today on the calender but Comp2 does not. I still need it to populate and place that company on the page but have something along the lines of "nothing on the calender for today". The other 2 companys (Comp1 & Comp3) would show the calender posting for that day. This is the code i have right now: SELECT clientinfo.id, clientinfo.theCompName, clientinfo.theURL, clientinfo.picURL, clientinfo.idNumber, clientoffers.idNumber, clientoffers.theDateStart, clientoffers.theDateEnd FROM clientinfo, clientoffers WHERE clientinfo.accountStats = 'OPEN' AND clientinfo.idNumber = clientinfo.idNumber AND '2010-05-08' BETWEEN clientoffers.theDateStart AND clientoffers.theDateEnd GROUP BY clientinfo.idNumber ORDER BY clientinfo.theCompName ASC That executes just fine but for Comp2, it just places the calender info from Comp1 into it when it really doesn't have anything. The output looks like this: Comp1 | 2010-05-08 | this is the calender event 1 | etc etc Comp2 | 2010-05-08 | this is the calender event 1 | etc etc comp3 | 2010-05-09 | this is the calender event 2 | etc etc Any help would be great :o) David

  • Performance Testing a .NET Smart Client Application (.NET ClickOnce technology)

    - by jn29098
    Has anyone ever had to run performance tests on a ClickOnce application? I have engaged with a vendor who had trouble setting up their toolset with our software because it is Smart Client based. They are understandably more geared toward purely browser-based applications. I wonder if anyone has had to tackle this before and if so would you recommend any vendors who use industry standard tools such as Load Runner (which i assume can handle the smart client)? Thanks

  • Getting current culture day names in .NET

    - by cxfx
    Is it possible to get the CurrentCulture's weekdays from DateTimeFormatInfo, but returning Monday as first day of the week instead of Sunday. And, if the current culture isn't English (i.e. the ISO code isn't "en") then leave it as default. By default CultureInfo.CurrentCulture.DateTimeFormat.DayNames returns: [0]: "Sunday" [1]: "Monday" [2]: "Tuesday" [3]: "Wednesday" [4]: "Thursday" [5]: "Friday" [6]: "Saturday" But I need: [0]: "Monday" [1]: "Tuesday" [2]: "Wednesday" [3]: "Thursday" [4]: "Friday" [5]: "Saturday" [6]: "Sunday"

  • SQL last day in moth select

    - by Saif Khan
    I have the following table which is basically the summary of daily transactions and is loaded nightly. +++++++++++++++++++++++ + DateCreated + Sale + +++++++++++++++++++++++ + 20100101 + 1000 + + 20100131 + 2000 + + 20100210 + 2000 + + 20100331 + 4000 + +++++++++++++++++++++++ I need to display the sale by month, but only for the last day in each month. eg JAN 2000 FEB 0 MAR 4000 I could probably accomplish this with CASE in my select, but is this efficient? This is SQL Server 2000.

  • Limit for Google calendar SMS notification per day

    - by pit777
    What is the limit for Google calendar SMS notification per day? How to detect I reached sms limit? Google write only this: http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=36589 You might have reached the limit for SMS notifications. There is a limit to the number of SMS notifications you can receive each day. This limit shouldn't affect most users, but it's something to keep in mind if you've scheduled a large number of events and are no longer receiving SMS notifications. I created sms reminder based on google calendar api(apps-script), but I think now I reached the daily limit for SMS notifications... but google not informed what is exactly amount of sms limit restriction :/ function emailNotification() { // POWIADOMIENIA SMS O NOWEJ POCZCIE var calendarID = "[email protected]"; // id kalendarza o nazwie „sms4email” var gmailLabelTODO = "autoscriptslabels/sms"; // etykieta „AutoScriptsLabels/SMS” var gmailLabelDONE = "done/_sms"; // etykieta „DONE/_SMS” var calendarEventDescription = "this-is-sms_notification-mark"; // etykieta utworzonego zdarzenia, dzieki której mozna bedzie je znalezc podczas kasowania var calendar = CalendarApp.getCalendarById(calendarID); // otwieramy kalendarz var threads = GmailApp.getUserLabelByName(gmailLabelTODO).getThreads(); // zmienna przechowujaca kolekcje lancuszków z etykieta TODO var now = new Date(); if(threads == 0) return; // zaprzestanie wykonywania, jezeli brak nowych lancuszków for(i in threads) // tworzymy zdarzenia { var title = threads[i].getFirstMessageSubject(); // tytul emaila var startDate = new Date(now.getTime()+120000); var endDate = new Date(now.getTime()+120000); var messages = threads[i].getMessages(); var senderEmail = messages[0].getFrom(); // nadawca emaila var advancedArgs = {location:senderEmail, description:calendarEventDescription}; calendar.createEvent(title, startDate, endDate, advancedArgs); } Utilities.sleep(1000); GmailApp.getUserLabelByName(gmailLabelDONE).addToThreads(threads); // dodawanie etykiety DONE Utilities.sleep(1000); GmailApp.getUserLabelByName(gmailLabelTODO).removeFromThreads(threads); // usuwanie etykiety TODO Utilities.sleep(120000); // czekamy az kalendarz wysle SMS var TodaysEvents = calendar.getEventsForDay(now); for (i in TodaysEvents) // wyszukiwanie wedlug zdarzenia i kasowanie po wyslaniu { if (TodaysEvents[i].getDescription()==calendarEventDescription) TodaysEvents[i].deleteEvent(); } }

  • Rails: find by day of week with timestamp

    - by Sleepycat
    I need to grab the records for same day of the week for the preceeding X days of the week. There must be a better way to do it than this: Transaction.find_by_sql "select * from transactions where EXTRACT(DOW from date) = 1 and organisation_id = 4 order by date desc limit 7" It gets me what I need but is Postgres specific and not very "Rails-y". Date is a timestamp. Anyone got suggestions?

    I am trying to learn new stuff about jquery, html, asp .net mvc. I see two school of thoughts - Those who use oo concepts a lot and stress on more object oriented approach Those who rely heavily on algorithms and say a particular problem should take o(n) etc. I am not sure where to spend more time ? . Should I spend more time learning OO stuff or learn new stuff like jquery etc or learn travelling sales man algorithm etc ?

  • Technology stack for very frequent gps data collection

    - by gvaswani
    I am working on a project that involves gps data collection from many users (say 1000) every second (while they move). I am planning on using a dedicated database instance on EC2 with the mysql persistent block storage and run a ruby on rails application with nginx frontend. I haven't worked on such data collection application before. Am I missing something here? I will have a another instance which will act as application server and use the data from the same EBS. If anybody has dealt with such a system before, Any advise would be much appreciated?

  • Question about migrating from ASP .NET User Controls to .NET 3.5 Master Page technology

    - by Jim McFetridge
    When migrating from an ASP .NET user control -based page with a header, footer, and menu to a Master Page using the same HTML mark-up, is it normal for CSS or javascript behaviors to change slightly? In particular, the submenu bar text now appears run together (which looks like a CSS symptom) and the graphics on the line above it appear to have an incorrect z-order. (The menu operation is javascript-based.) (I tried to paste images here but couldn't.) Also, the site is very large and we've not been given permission to redo the menu for the entire site. This is a forward-only migration. (Because I know that someone will ask.) Assuming that there are no changes in scope, what are the things that I should check? Thanks! Jim
