    Hello All, I have a Silverlight-3 solution that contains a few different projects. I want to have one "common" project for holding controls and resources that will be used by multiple other projects. Within the common project, there is a folder called Resources, which holds a ResourceDictionary (CommonColors.xaml). This is set to be built as a Resource, Do Not Copy. I add a reference to the common project in another project (call it UncommonControls), and attempt to add the ResourceDictionary as a MergedDictionary: <UserControl.Resources> <ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="/Common;component/Resources/CommonColors.xaml" /> <ResourceDictionary Source="/UncommonControls;component/Resources/UncommonStyles.xaml" /> </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> </ResourceDictionary> </UserControl.Resources> When I try to run, I get an exception: Attribute /Common;component/Resources/CommonColors.xaml value is out of range. [Line: 14 Position: 44] --- Inner Exception --- The given key was not present in the dictionary. However, if I reference a ResourceDictionary local to Uncommon (such as the UncommonStyles.xaml, above) project, which is set up with the same Build properties, it works fine. I haven't seen anything that says SL3 can't reference an external ResourceDictionary (on the contrary, I've seen an example of using one, albeit with no downloadable project to verify the behavior).   • What is the proper way to set my drawable directories to support the new Dell Streak without losing support for older devices?

    This seems to be a widespread problem. I have the following drawable directories: drwxr-xr-x 18 mike staff 612 Feb 4 17:28 drawable/ drwxr-xr-x 51 mike staff 1734 Feb 4 17:32 drawable-nodpi/ drwxr-xr-x 44 mike staff 1496 Feb 4 17:30 drawable-normal-mdpi/ My xml drawable resources are in drawable. My resources intended for the large-mdpi (Dell Streak) and normal-hdpi (Droid, Nexus, Incredible, etc.) are all in drawable-nodpi. My resources for normal-mdpi (older phones like the G1) are in drawable-normal-mdpi. Unfortunately, the normal-hdpi phones like the Droid are pulling their resources from drawable-normal-mdpi instead of from drawable-nodpi. This is likely because of the rules in How Android Finds the Best-matching Resource. So the question is, how do I provide support for large-mdpi devices like the Streak along with normal-hdpi devices like the Droid, as well as normal-mdpi devices like the G1? The simplest solution would probably be to make two copies of my large resources, one in normal-hdpi for the droid and one in large-mdpi for the streak, but i'd like to avoid duplicating all of these resources. Update Per Mayra's suggestion, I could make an alias for every resource. However, there are a lot of resources I'd have to make aliases for, which would make maintenance a nightmare going forward, so I'm hoping for another solution.

  • Windows Azure Recipe: Social Web / Big Media

    With the rise of social media there’s been an explosion of special interest media web sites on the web. From athletics to board games to funny animal behaviors, you can bet there’s a group of people somewhere on the web talking about it. Social media sites allow us to interact, share experiences, and bond with like minded enthusiasts around the globe. And through the power of software, we can follow trends in these unique domains in real time. Drivers Reach Scalability Media hosting Global distribution Solution Here’s a sketch of how a social media application might be built out on Windows Azure: Ingredients Traffic Manager (optional) – can be used to provide hosting and load balancing across different instances and/or data centers. Perfect if the solution needs to be delivered to different cultures or regions around the world. Access Control – this service is essential to managing user identity. It’s backed by a full blown implementation of Active Directory and allows the definition and management of users, groups, and roles. A pre-built ASP.NET membership provider is included in the training kit to leverage this capability but it’s also flexible enough to be combined with external Identity providers including Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook. The provider model has extensibility points to hook into other identity providers as well. Web Role – hosts the core of the web application and presents a central social hub users. Database – used to store core operational, functional, and workflow data for the solution’s web services. Caching (optional) – as a web site traffic grows caching can be leveraged to keep frequently used read-only, user specific, and application resource data in a high-speed distributed in-memory for faster response times and ultimately higher scalability without spinning up more web and worker roles. It includes a token based security model that works alongside the Access Control service. Tables (optional) – for semi-structured data streams that don’t need relational integrity such as conversations, comments, or activity streams, tables provide a faster and more flexible way to store this kind of historical data. Blobs (optional) – users may be creating or uploading large volumes of heterogeneous data such as documents or rich media. Blob storage provides a scalable, resilient way to store terabytes of user data. The storage facilities can also integrate with the Access Control service to ensure users’ data is delivered securely. Content Delivery Network (CDN) (optional) – for sites that service users around the globe, the CDN is an extension to blob storage that, when enabled, will automatically cache frequently accessed blobs and static site content at edge data centers around the world. The data can be delivered statically or streamed in the case of rich media content. Training These links point to online Windows Azure training labs and resources where you can learn more about the individual ingredients described above. (Note: The entire Windows Azure Training Kit can also be downloaded for offline use.) Windows Azure (16 labs) Windows Azure is an internet-scale cloud computing and services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services which can be used individually or together. It gives developers the choice to build web applications; applications running on connected devices, PCs, or servers; or hybrid solutions offering the best of both worlds. New or enhanced applications can be built using existing skills with the Visual Studio development environment and the .NET Framework. With its standards-based and interoperable approach, the services platform supports multiple internet protocols, including HTTP, REST, SOAP, and plain XML SQL Azure (7 labs) Microsoft SQL Azure delivers on the Microsoft Data Platform vision of extending the SQL Server capabilities to the cloud as web-based services, enabling you to store structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. Windows Azure Services (9 labs) As applications collaborate across organizational boundaries, ensuring secure transactions across disparate security domains is crucial but difficult to implement. Windows Azure Services provides hosted authentication and access control using powerful, secure, standards-based infrastructure. I know how to enter simple formulas, format cells, import files, and I can sort and filter. Sometimes I even use a pivot table. I never attended training. I learnt everything I know on the fly.   • In Email, Image (img) Source (src) Tags are rewritten as relative links. How to fix?

    I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server. In addition, I am using Zend_Mail to send the emails out. For example, I have a link: src="http://www.furnituretrainingcompany.com/images/email/highpoint_2009_04/header.jpg" And it gets rewritten as: src="../../../../images/email/highpoint_2009_04/header.jpg" What can cause this to occur and how is it corrected?     Reluctant to ask because there is so much here about 'postfix relay access denied' but I cannot find my case: I use php (Zend Framework) to send emails outside my network using the Google mail server because I could not send mail outside my server (user: web). However when I sent out an email via cron (user: root, I believe), still using ZF, using the same mail config/credentials, I get the message: '5.7.1 Relay access denied' I guess I need to know one of two things: 1. How can I use the google smtp server from cron 2. What do I need to change in my config to send mail using my own server instead of google Though the answer to 2. is the more structural solution I assume, I am quite happy with an answer to 1. as well because I think Google is better at server maintaince (security/spam) than I am.   • Eclipse buildtime and runtime classpaths for easy execution of junit test cases

    Hey, I've a large eclipse project with multiple junit classes. I'm trying to strike a balance between adding runtime resources to the eclipse project classpath, and the need to configure mutliple junit launch configurations. I realise the default eclipse build classpath is inherited by all unit test configurations, but some of my tests require extra runtime resources. I could add these resources to the build classpath, but this does slow my overall project build time (since it has to keep more files in synch). I don't like the idea of including * resources and jars on the runtime classpath. The two options that i have are these, the positive and negative cases as i see it are listed 1 : Add all runtime resources to eclipse classpath. POS I can select a unit test and run it without having to configure the test classpath. POS Extra resources on build classpath means eclipse slows down. NEG More difficult to ensure each test uses the correct resources. 2 : Configure the classpath of each unit test POS I know exactly what resources are being used by a test. POS Smaller build classpath means quicker build and execution by eclipse. NEG Its a pain having to setup multiple separate junit runtime classpaths. Ideally i'd like to configure one base junit runtime configuration, which takes the default eclipse build classpath, adds extra runtime jars and resources. This configuration could then be reused by the specific junit test cases, Is anything like this possible? I want to avoid any eclipse dependency on calling an ant target when refactoting code and executing tests. Basically - What is the the easiest way to seperate and maintain the eclipse buildtime classpath and junit runtime classpaths?
